So good I actually had to write a review…read more..
We pulled off the highway to gas up and grab something to eat on our way to the airport. When we got to this McDonald's, the drive-thru line was seriously backed up, so we parked and I went inside instead.
Good decision. Ordering was quick, and I was back in the car with our food in just a few minutes.
I didn't actually start eating my burgers until we were barreling east on I-94. And that's when something unexpected happened: I noticed the food.
It was genuinely good. Not "good for a McDonald's." It was noticeably better than virtually every McDonald's burger I've had--with one memorable exception.*
I realize the odds of anyone reading this review while carefully weighing their fast-food options in Dickinson, North Dakota, are probably pretty slim. But if you are that person, congratulations: I've been waiting for you. Get a burger, enjoy your meal, and drive safely.
*And now, a story from the 1970s...
Many years ago, I was driving through Oak Brook, Illinois, and stopped at a McDonald's for lunch. Almost immediately, something seemed a little unusual: everyone working behind the counter appeared to be middle-aged. This was the '70s, when the typical McDonald's crew seemed to consist almost entirely of teenagers.
Still, then as now, I don't judge. I ordered my food, sat down and started eating.
And then, just like this time, I was surprised by how unusually good everything tasted.
When I finished, I mentioned it to one of the men behind the counter. He laughed and asked, "Do you know where you are?"
I did not.
It turned out I had wandered into the working restaurant associated with McDonald's Hamburger University, where prospective managers were being trained. I had accidentally gotten a McDonald's meal prepared by people who were literally being taught how to make McDonald's food the way McDonald's intended it to be made.
Nearly 50 years later, somewhere along I-94 in Dickinson, it happened again.
Apparently, every few decades, I have the rare good fortune of getting a McDonald's burger made exactly the way it should be.
