Julia is the best hairdresser I have ever had! She's worked on my hair for years and anytime I've had to get someone else to cut it (because of extended travel), they just disappoint! She's very gentle on my tender scalp and has a kind, soothing personality. This salon charges a deposit fee of half the price of your service to make an appointment!. If you cancel within 24 hours, you LOSE that deposit. I paid $52 deposit then J Salon canceled my appointment on the day of my service. My appointment Was at 9 am, they called and texted me at 8:29am. They canceled because stylist was sick. I have no problem with someone getting sick, especially with Covid around, but I'm sure I would not be given the same courtesy if I called 1/2 hour before my appt. I would have lost my deposit! There are many, many salons in and around Honolulu that don't charge a deposit to make an appointment. I suggest you find a salon that doesn't think their services are above everyone else by charging you to even make an appointment. I went to Paul Brown and received best style and cut!!! read more

I think most women would agree that it can be difficult to find the right hair stylist. It took me almost a year to get my hair trimmed because of this reason but my boyfriend actually suggested J Salon since he had received the best service from Phil's Barber which is just next door (same owners). I decided to give them a try based on the reviews and photos on Yelp and Instagram! Booking was relatively easy online. You are required to pay a $50 deposit to secure the booking. They were booked about 2 weeks in advance and I decided to choose Scarlette as my stylist for no rhyme or reason but I'm glad I did! When I checked in, the first thing we did was a small consultation at the chair. Scarlette not only asked what I wanted to do with my hair but she went in detail on the health of my hair and scalp. She showed me where my natural hairline was, the condition of my scalp and even pointed out which side of my head grew more hair. I've never learned so much about my own head of hair! I added a deep conditioning package with the hair cut so while Scarlette did the hair treatment, she thoroughly explained why she chose certain products and what the active ingredients were. I went in knowing that I wanted to trim away a lot of my over grown "pandemic" hair but I honestly was not prepared to lose over 5 inches so I was slightly panicking when my hair was getting shorter and shorter but the end result was fabulous! The place was clean, girl at the front desk was sweet. The gentleman next to her was too cool, looked over but didn't say hi or anything. You don't come in to a salon on your day off to get judged before you even get ready for an event, so felt a bit unwelcoming. I went in to get my hair styled. Unfortunately there wasn't enough time blocked off. I was willing to pay way more to get the look in the picture. My total was $55 and I left $25 tip. Charge me $150 if you need to, cut it, spray it, talk to it, sing it a song, just make the style last for the evening. The stylist was pleasant and tried her best with the time she had. I did tell them my hair was long when I booked the appointment, but the next client showed up when the stylist was only about halfway through. The final stages were rushed of course, as a result I ended up with something different from the structured waves I came in for. The wave on top was the main reason I booked the appointment, but it wasn't there at all. I showed the photo attached and took the after picture not even 30 minutes after I left the salon. The curls stayed for about 1.5 hours and I had to use my curling iron and run to the store to buy hair spray. I have fine hair (previously bleached) so I've never had issues keeping a curl before. Not the end of the world, but wouldn't go there for a style again. It's a shame because I live close and wanted to like this place. read more

I had a hair consultation and the lady that was going to color my hair was extremely rude, short and made condescending comments the entire time. DON'T DYE HERE!!! I was excited to find a well reviewed salon near work. I came in to get sun bleaching taken out of my dark brown hair. They switched me down a grade of colorist who then used a box formula and turned my hair from brown to black. When I got home and my wet hair dried, I realized it was black from root to tip. There was no shading, none of my original color was left. Just black hair. I called and asked if they could adjust it. They gave me an appointment, but then owner Gary called back to mansplain that it was my fault the hair was too dark and that I should have picked the right number of formula to get the results I wanted. I tried to tell him that I didn't know what formula numbers I should have requested, that's why I came to a professional, but that I asked for color correcting my sun bleached brown hair back to dark brown, and they gave me jet black hair. I understand getting shading perfect is hard, but it's just not brown, like at all. I came in looking like a normal person and left looking like Tom Hiddleston in the Marvel movies. Gary was a obnoxiously rude on the phone. I offered to send him pictures of my hair but he wasn't interested. He kept talking over me and telling me I asked for it dark and that the stylist told him I loved it. Who does that?! It was like being on the phone with Trump. There are much better places to go on island. No fault of the stylist, but Gary and Justin are clearly shady businessmen gaming social media to trick customers into paying top dollar professional prices for amateur services. edit: Messing up color happens. My wife made a hair appointment there she made it in November 2023 the appointment date was for March 22/24 at3:00 pm. Every thing was confirmed by text and phone. We are from Saskatchewan Canada so we were staying in Kauai and decided the best way would be to change a Kauai week for a Honolulu week and make this appointment. The appointment was to be with Katherine whom my wife had previously and loved her expertise and inputs to achieve the haircut and color she most wanted. So we get to the salon at 2:30 to check in and a young girl whom admitted being fairly new at the job told my wife she couldn't find her appointment . She read through the texts on my wife's phone and found them in her system But yet no appointment , she went and talked to her manager came back said sorry can't understand what happened but we don't have you scheduled for an appointment. Katherine is booked till June. The thing was that the manager stayed hidden behind her sliding door without the decency to even come out and talk to us, We did say we're here all week but no luck! You would have thought the salon could have wiggled things around and made something work. We know Katherine is well recognized in the industry just can't understand why she would let a salon like JSalon represent her if this is how they treat customer. I waited to post a review hoping I wouldn't still be angry about it a couple weeks later. I won't mention the stylist name because I don't want her to loose business from my review. This was my first visit. I chose the particular stylist by her bio on the J salon homepage, assuming she would rock the cut I wanted. I showed her a photo of what I wanted and a photo of what I didn't want so there could be no confusion. I told her I do not like and do not want an A line cut, and I do not like my hair flat ironed. What I got was an A line cut and left with FLAT, flat ironed hair. She told me she had to leave the front SLIGHTLY longer otherwise it would flip. This is not slight, it's full A line. I told her a main goal was volume on top. She said with length taken off I would naturally get volume. She said a lot would do with styling, so why didn't she style it like the photo, or at least give me SOME volume on top with product? She did not speak to me the entire cut. It was so bizarre and so uncomfortable. During the wash she repeatedly stabbed the back of my ears and neck with her pointy acrylic nails, as well as when she was blow drying my hair. My hair is hard to detangle, I warned her before hand and she acted annoyed and frustrated during the process of detangling it, at one point just roughly brushing through it. Also she did not make a single product recommendation. I wanted to call the next day and complain and ask for a fix but, I didn't want the same stylist that didn't listen to me in the first place to "fix" it. I booked a last minute appointment with Kristina, because I was desperate for a cut, and she had availability. I showed her a reference photo (which I know was achievable bc the photo was of me). She seemed to understand and got to work. For the record, I chose j salon as I used to be a regular client of Melvin's years and years ago when I had lived here previously, and I know it to be a reputable salon. Anyhow, she proceeded with my cut, with minimal conversation (totally fine with me). When she faced me back to the mirror and claimed she was finished, she put some product and and diffused my curls. Once dry (a complete mess, I might add, bc she obviously had minimal experience with curly hair), she showed me the back and was like ok you're done. The cut was awful and not at all what I asked for. I also didn't really feel like I had an opportunity to tell her that since she kind of rushed me out of the chair. I paid the 100$ and tipped and left pretty disappointed. I'm not very confrontational so I didn't want to go back and make a big deal, plus I wasn't confident I'd get what I was asking for since it was already pretty bad. I ended up going somewhere else to have it fixed and paying another $100... so I would definitely not recommend her for a curly customer. Also - can we please upgrade the smocks/robe things you are expecting women to put on in your salon? Any woman mid sized and beyond are not fitting in those. And it's super embarrassing to sit in a chair, in a room full of people in an ill fitting salon robe that you can't tie. Please acknowledge your bigger clients and get them a robe that fits. read more

I still think about my one and only experience here. It was so bad that it made me not want to get my hair done again anywhere for a really long time. I came in 15mins early in hopes to look at different color options. The guy at the front desk was nice and offered me a seat. My stylist didn't greet me for 30mins. She did however take two other customers before me and ignored me. I patiently waited thinking she must be behind and overbooked but that she would surely apologize soon. Nope. I waited an hour before she got me to have a seat. I told her what I would like and she informed me they don't have colors to look at anymore but that she just chooses. I hadn't had my hair done in awhile and was pretty sleep deprived from just having a new born baby a few months prior, but I was thankful to get pampered for the day and trusted her. She cut my hair and chose a color. She left me three more times for about another twenty mins each time, when she took in two more new customers. Okay...I waited patiently some more. Was thinking this was a bit rude but kept trying to be understanding of overbooking and time management issues. She dyed my hair, washed it out and left me sitting with wet hair. I thought surely she would return and put me under a dryer. Surely. Nope. I waited in the cold AC with wet hair for 30mins shivering. She finally came back and asked if I was okay and I told her I was freezing. I thought perhaps she would offer me tea like her other guest she gave since I was so cold from having wet hair in the AC for the past 30mins. Instead, she gave me a bad response face and basically said she's doing the best she can. I don't like to make a fuss and I didn't even want my money back, I just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible to prevent myself from crying. I am sad that the first time I could have out for myself after having a baby was such a bad experience. I never felt so disrespected at a salon in my life. Like I was a burden to have there. This place isn't cheap either. My cut and color cost $600. I left cold and not really liking it. I went elsewhere to have it fixed and they told me they had never seen someone butcher a cut that bad before. That they completely thinned out my hair as layers instead of doing it underneath because it was thick and they likely were trying to cut time to not have to do as much hair nicely. They had to remove three inches to even it all out because it wasn't even cut straight. They also told me my hair wasn't parted evenly and that all the highlights were uneven, significantly different amounts on each side and significantly different thicknesses. I am so sad by this experience and hope that no one ever has to have this happen to them. All customers should be treated equally. Just because I was a tired new mom, didn't mean I didn't have money to spend. I would have likely been your best retail customer and dropped another $600 on product with commission for you, plus rebooked for a touch up for in three months, and recommended you to many other people, but instead I just left in tears in the parking garage and will never be coming back. read more

I've gotten my hair cut here about 3-4 times and each time I leave feeling a little hurt inside. It never turns out how I asked for it to be. I usually go to Kristina but today I paid 170 for a deep conditioning and haircut with Joanne and was left feeling horrible about my appearance. Confidence low key tanked. The cut was good -- better than most places, and the scalp massage and styling was amazing, but it was not what I asked for! If you're a girl with long hair and you want to keep your length, you might have to say so over and over again until they get it, and you may still leave with hair over 2 inches shorter than what you asked for. Almost every time I've come here they take some sort of creative liberty with the length. Do better. I'm sad now. Devastated honestly. And I know it's just hair, but a good haircut makes a woman feel unstoppable and beautiful. After this last time, I won't be coming back. read more

I've always just taken what a barber can give me because I figure I've got difficult hair to begin with... it never wants to do anything or stay where I put it. When salons opened back up, I decided to try to up my game a bit and chose to give J-salon a try since it's essentially nearby to my neighborhood. I landed with Monet as my barber and I couldn't be happier. Now that I've been going for about 5-6 months, I can honestly say that not only is the customer service great, but Monet works his magic because I'm happier than ever with how my hair turns out every time he cuts it. He's always friendly, happy to see me and does an excellent job. I'm sold on Monet cutting my hair going forward. And the price is so reasonable, I thought for sure they'd be at least double the strip mall place but for $10 more than I paid there, I am 100 times happier with the result. read more

This review is for Melvin specifically. He is the best hair person I've ever had, hands down. I have thick/wavy/weird Asian hair and most people (especially if they are not Asian) cannot handle it.
