    Seasonal drinks ~ fall

So we used to frequent Jroo's more often or at the very least do delivery takeout which was always decent with our favs being eggplant parm sub or buffalo chicken nachos delivered. We stopped in because we had a gift card and were sorely disappointed, our waitress Kate might have been having a bad day as she was not it. Our drinks were good my husband loves being able to order Foxon park diet white birch. We split an app of fried calamari and it was way overdone a dark brown and so much so that some of the crispy coating had fried off leaving rubbery rings. I ordered the potato skins with broccoli and when they came they also had bacon and I said I ordered the broccoli ones and she said I assumed you want both and was incredulous that I would send them back. We had to ask another server for silverware and yet another server for ketchup as after that she didn't return to check on us. Hard pass going forward.

This place is always packed!! Been here a few times, can't say I've ever had a bad meal here. Service is usually good but can sometimes take a while if they're super busy. Dishes sometimes come sloppy if they're very busy too- but not a normal occurrence. Drinks are always good! It's a huge restaurant, if it's packed it's super loud, like so loud you can't even hear the other people at your table.

I ordered the half a pound burger and you can literally share it with someone. You have several options for fries. Steak fries, curly, sweet potato or onion rings. All great options. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. The place has a really great laid back feel to it.

I've been to this restaurant a few times but this last visit was on another level. We were a large group celebrating the holiday but they only had one server (who was great) but due to the busiest of the restaurant the food (if you received it) was nothing to write home about. I never received my meal and asked for french fries so I had something to eat. Others did not receive their food until after some had already finished eating. They were not equipped to handle large crowds. We've been there 3 yrs for celebrating but it will be our last. The drink pictured was amazing!

So finally, we decided to finally give this place a try because we drive by it all the time and always say, "we have to eat there one day". Well, that they came and went. We were seated I. The back room and the lighting was dim. The acoustics was poor because every sound was amplified, and it turned out that there was a group of people there making a ton of noise. The server was young and had that "whatever" attitude. No super attentive or helpful. We started off with nachos and the portion was big and it was slathered with an unusual amount of ground beef. I never thought I would complain about how much meat is on my nachos but it actually ruined the app. The flavor was good and it was more than enough for 5 people. The amount of ground beef was so offputting. We actually had leftover which is a shocker for nachos. The meals were incredibly disappointing. Two people ordered the prime rib dinner and when it came, it was an enormous portion. The optics looked very good however it was tough and inedible. You had to cut it into tiny pieces to eat it. My table mates were disappointed to say the least. Another friend had the personal pizza and the middle portion was mushy. The edges by the crust were cooked well but it had the consistency of a frozen supermarket pizza. As for me, I ordered the chicken Florentine and it was mediocre at best. It lacked flavor and I had to do it with grated cheese, just to give it some taste. The linguine accompaniment was overcooked, with a mushy texture. The meals are a little pricey for the quality of the food. I never thought I would say this, but I think the Olive Garden would've been a better choice. This whole experience was mediocre at best.

Nashville cheese curds with ranch (off the specials menu)

Hubs and I wanted a place with good comfort food and a drink or two. I said...what about that place, j.roo's? And off we went to this spot. Seated right away, we got a good look at their menu, ordered the Nashville cheese curds for an app and then for mains we got the chicken florentine over penne and a veggie burger. Dessert was a peanut butter pie to share and dinner here was what the doctor ordered on that blustery Friday evening! We will def be returning to try more from their menu!!

I heard a lot of good things about this place. I gave it a try. I ordered two pizzas to go. I got the Mexican pizza that tastes good but the only thing I don't like about this pizza was the lettuce. It has good flavor. I got the special pizza with all the meats. The service was great. Both pizzas were good, they are not the best pizzas but they are affordable for anyone.

Love the grated cheese pizza. Our waitress had the best smile and provided exceptional service Don't bother with the meatballs. They don't have a true Italian flavor and they were light on sauce and seasoning 8/28: Ordered my favorite pizza. Grated cheese with sausage. It was delicious

Our waitress, Vanessa T. was fantastic, she was friendly and always made sure we had everything we needed. My husband ordered a cheese pizza and I ordered the shrimp scampi pizza. My husband and I agreed that the pizza was okay, but we've had better in other spots around New Haven County. We've been to J Roo's before and we've had other food items that we enjoyed more. We shall return, but will probably pass on the pizza next time.

    BLT (Platter)
    Michele C.

Have to say this was the best BLT ever!! The wheat bread was perfectly toasted, bacon was nice & crispy- just YUM!! I got it with sweet potato fries which were also perfectly crispy. I also got a spicy margarita which was also very good. Restaurant is located right off the highway. The place is huge & very popular. It was Friday night and I had to fight for a parking spot. It is a family run restaurant and the owners were onsite which is always a plus for me. They have a pretty extensive menu and the prices are very reasonable and portions are big.

1 restaurant 2 totally different experiences.... #Inconsistent My first time going to J Roos was amazing. I ordered a bunch of food because I was hungry and glad to be out if the house. It was great! The food was great, especially loved the wings and the J Roos chips. I declared those my new go-to faves. The service was also great! It was early in the week during the mid afternoon so it wasn't too crowded. Highly recommended this place. Couldn't understand why there were do many negative reviews. Fast forward a month or so. Go back again, this time later in the week and it had to be around Happy Hour time... it wasn't packed, but definitely more crowded. This time I didn't order as much food, and I'm glad I didn't. The food took longer to come out and at the same time it felt rushed. Missing was the quality and care from my previous visit. The server seemed to have an attitude, like we were bothering her by even being there. I also tried one new item and I think it was overpriced, not worth the money. Drinks were well-made, but This time I was highly disappointed with the service and the food. Now I see why there are so many negative opinions and reviews of this place. It made me not want to go back. So I'm giving right down the middle 3 stars because with a 5 star experience and a 1 star experience, I'm not really sure which was the true J Roos. The last time left a bad taste in my mouth and I'm not in a rush to go back and find out. I need consistency!

Huge menu with nice choices. Excellent dessert choices. Excellent service from Heidi. Bill was very low! Definite recommendation for inexpensive great meal. Ambience is not much but that isn't why you come here. You come for a comfortable, affordable meal. They only drawback is that they don't take reservations. That doesn't cost them the 5 stars but would put them on the map with parties that like to know their won't be a wait for their table.

Olde World Brick Oven Apizza is a New Haven-style pizzeria that opened in North Haven, Connecticut…read morein 1995. It was founded by business partners Bill McCarthy and Joe Houde. McCarthy started making pizza at the age of 13. He received his training by working at local pizzerias such as La Bella's and Sorrento's. Once he reached adulthood, he started a career with the railroad. He worked with the railroad for several years until a physical injury caused him to retire. He went back to pizza-making when he started an eight-year stint at the popular Modern Apizza in New Haven. Eventually, he and Houde partnered up to open their own pizzeria. After 30 successful years, McCarthy and Houde decided to retire and sell the pizzeria. In April 2026, Olde World reopened under the ownership of business partners and chefs Robert Marcarelli, Jared Schulefand and Isarel Lopez. Marcarelli actually started his career working at Olde World, before going on to study at the Lincoln Culinary Institute. Schulefand started his career working as a busboy at Modern Apizza, before going on to study at Johnson and Wales University. He now owns Home Restaurant in Branford. Marcarelli & Schulefand both have their own restaurant consulting business (Pi Restaurant Consulting), and they co-own Supreme Seafood in North Branford, the Shanty in Branford, the Galley in Guilford, and NEBCO Kitchen in Branford. Lopez was a longtime pizzaiolo at Next Door Pizzeria in New Haven and nearly bought it before a deal fell through and it closed. In addition to New Haven-style thin crust apizza, Olde World also makes calzones, Italian entrees, pasta dishes, subs, stuffed breads and salads. I recently visited Olde World after they re-opened under the new ownership. I had eaten their pizza multiple times over the years and always loved it. How would the pizza taste now with the "new guys"? The new partners prepared a variety of different pies and dishes for my small group to sample. The classic "Mozzarella" (red sauce, mozzarella, pecorino) still tasted just as good as it ever did. In addition to the classic offerings, the partners have added some more modern twists to the menu, such as "Mashed Potato" (white, mashed potato, caramelized onions, bacon, garlic), "Crab Rangoon Pie" (white sauce, crème fraîche, imitation crab, sweet chili drizzle), and "Spring Fling" (asparagus, seacoast maitake mushrooms, ramp pesto, mozzarella, goat cheese, Szechuan chili honey). The latter (a special of the month) was my favorite of the tasting! We were also treated to some "Penne, Sausage & Broccoli Rabe" and "Burrata Salad" (asparagus, spicy capitol, herb marinated artichokes, tomato confit, baby greens, garlic crumb, balsamic truffle). Paired with some local Foxon Park sodas, we were treated to quite the feast! Not only is the food just as good as it ever was... it's even better now! I must tip my hat to our excellent hosts. I plan on coming back again and again!

John and Steve brought out pie after pie. We had the plain, plain with grated cheese, tomato with fresh mozzarella, clam with bacon, mangia special, Stevie Gs apple pizza, mashed potato pizza. We brought in our homemade suppi and they put it on some of our pies. We also tried the eggplant Parmesan and garlic knots. The plain pies, mashed potato, and the mangia special were my favorites but really everything there was top notch. There is nothing that I wouldn't order again. The crust is nice and crunchy. Good char on it. Sauce was delicious - not sour like straight from a can. Toppings were better than I expected for a small pizza spot. Sausage was tasty. Mushrooms were fresh not tinned, fresh tomatoes and basil. Tons of clams on the pizza. Bacon was thick sliced and left almost whole. Eggplant was sliced thin. Generous with the toppings. Even better than their pizza- is their service. It was my first time meeting them and I felt like an old friend. They were so friendly, chatted with us, told us stories -- we really had a good time. The older gentleman who brought out the food and took away the empty trays was very thorough- checked in on us regularly. Mangia Apizza is easy to miss - connected to Vick's Cafe (really it's a bar).
