Having hosted the HGTV program "My House is Your House", we've worked with and vetted a lot of…read morecabinet builders around San Diego and Southern California. I cannot stress enough how much of a mistake it was to choose San Diego Custom Cabinets for our kitchen cabinets on an Encinitas project. The workmanship is absolutely appalling (bad). The cabinets started showing signs of wear and tear within just a year. Some panels (dishwasher) corroded and started peeling. The gaps between panels were uneven and unsightly at time of build but especially over time became worse, and to top it all off, the cabinets have actually changed color over time, going from a dark brown (walnut) to a tiger orange. It's obvious all materials were of the cheapest and lowest quality, but beyond that the company's response to these issues was to push back and simply state the warranty period had expired. I should add, it was not only the faces of the cabinets that failed miserably, but the boxes were poorly constructed, including cheap/failing hardware (like the trash pull out which constantly fails (hardware becomes loose and needs to be manually tightened monthly). At this point, we've had no choice but to demolish the entire cabinetry system. We have incurred massive costs (since prices have dramatically changed) and our clients are displaced during this demo period. I'm beyond disappointed with this purchase and this company and would strongly advise anyone considering this company to look elsewhere. As a company and brand, we will not be working with SD Custom Cabinets in the future. We will not be endorsing them. And if actual or prospective clients ask for our vote of confidence or recommendation, we will point them to this review.

All of a sudden the $595 fabrication cost was increased to $850. So, now the job cost is $1,150!!! NOT OKAY !!!! I foolishly did not get a written invoice when we started the transaction. Our home has an odd little nook next to my desk, and it was difficult to figure out how to make the…read morespace functional. I dreamed about turning it into a cozy reading nook with built-in bookcases and filing cabinet drawers, but I assumed anything custom would be extremely cost prohibitive. Later, we saw Nghiep's work at a friend's home where he had custom-made and installed all her kitchen cabinets. We were extremely impressed with how gorgeous the cabinets looked and functioned -- beautiful dove tails, true soft close, solid high quality wood. Our friend herself found Nghiep the same way we did -- seeing his work first hand when visiting a colleague's home. I was a bit nervous seeing some of the negative reviews online (or lack thereof) and so we interviewed a couple other cabinetry companies alongside. However, after meeting Nghiep in person and discussing the project, we felt confident we would get the same stellar results as our friend's kitchen and decided to go ahead with ASAP Custom Cabinets. He knew exactly what I was trying to achieve from my rough sketch and gave great suggestions -- including matching the front details of our existing kitchen cabinetry. Pricing was reasonable and he uses only high quality materials. We did not have any communication issues as per other reviews -- sometimes it was hard to understand him when talking over the phone but he was very responsive over text. We even visited his workshop to see the piece in progress and discuss colors, and we were thoroughly impressed with the quality. On installation date, his crew was very meticulous, tidy, and professional. They checked in with us frequently to ensure it was to our liking, and made lots of little tweaks to ensure it was perfect. Our floors & ceilings were not level which caused some issues, but Nghiep was able to solve most of those adjustments on-site. He needed to recut a longer piece so he came back the next day to finish the job. Nghiep is a true master craftsman! I highly recommend! P.S. Will post an updated photo once I get the display bookcases filled and the custom seat cushion for my reading nook!

Don't be a nice guy trusting what he promised and don't pay before the completion of the work after a thorough inspection of the work. The other picture shows his 2nd attempt to fix the uneven mill but ended up with 2 pieces. When asked, he admits he messed up the measurement but refused to replace that and said that is normal and he does that type of butt-joint all the time! Nip came and did templates for the job twice but still messed up the cabinets with angles. Be prepared to pay for drywall work and paint touchup where the cabinets came in short and can't be covered with trims. On this job, - I lost my laundry chute because he said it is hard he can't do it after the installation. - He messed up the measurement and the cabinets came in short. We ended up extending the ceiling pop-ups. - The wall cabinets were not installed level and we ended up shimming the exhaust fan; the backsplash has to be cut in the way to accommodate the cabinets. - the floor cabinets with angle was manufactured wrong and it sits more than 2" away from the wall. He covered it up with supporting plywood for the countertop. That was not discovered until the pre-fab countertop slab installation. I have to say the cabinets look nice but i don't want to deal with the frustration and his bad attitude again.

We went with Forever Builders, who also did some demo for us when we first moved in. Among other things, we 1) stripped and replaced the floor, 2) demoed the built-in tub and replaced it with a soaking tub, 3) replaced the vanity countertops, 4) installed a chandelier and sconces, and 5) installed a custom shower door. Steve was our project manager for the entire project, which took 3-4 weeks. We are so incredibly pleased with the result, and just as happy with the service and professionalism we received from Steve and his team. Steve managed every aspect of this complex project flawlessly, stopped by frequently to check progress and QC each phase of work, and was consistently responsive and professional. He took my calls on nights and weekends, and I always felt taken care of and valued as an important customer--such a rare occurrence these days. The craftsmanship was flawless too. I am a detail-oriented person and tend to demand perfection, and Forever Builders exceeded my expectations. As a bonus, they also installed a floating vanity for me in a secondary bathroom, as a complimentary part of the project. Since then, I have also asked Steve and Forever Builders to patch up a huge portion of ceiling drywall at my mom's house that was screwed up by another company, and they did an amazing job with that as well. You will not find a more consistently exceptional company. I'm a customer for life.

Based on that storyline, they're refusing to take responsibility for the flooring damage. The windows were installed without permits. I brought in four independent inspections, including three licensed general contractors and one home inspector. All confirmed active water intrusion and pointed to the window installation as the likely source. Despite that, Forever Builders continues to deny, redirect, and avoid addressing the actual installation. The floors never had water intrusion before the remodel. The problem started after their work. Instead of owning it and fixing it, they've chosen to argue technicalities and wait for CSLB to force the issue. For a company that promotes itself as 5-star, this has been anything but. When serious defects surface, there's no urgency, no accountability, and no effort to stand behind the work. Just excuses. That is not 5-star service. That is not what integrity looks like.

That level of organization immediately gave me confidence. During my consultation, Bar exceeded my expectations. He was thorough, knowledgeable, and clearly has extensive experience in remodeling. I especially appreciated his straightforward, honest approach. Rather than simply agreeing with every idea I had, he took the time to explain the pros and cons of different renovation options and offered thoughtful recommendations based on both function and long-term value. What really stood out was that he identified several important considerations that none of the other contractors I met with had even mentioned. His expertise was evident throughout the entire appointment, and I left feeling much more informed about my project. If budget weren't a factor, I would have hired D&L Builders on the spot. Unfortunately, I have several home projects underway and need to stay within my overall budget. Even so, I highly recommend meeting with Bar if you're looking for an experienced contractor who values honesty, quality, and educating his clients rather than simply trying to make a sale.

The area required that one cabinet be disassembled and cut to fit the space and I was initially going to do it myself to ensure that it would be done right. He personally went to my home to check my measurements and scheduled a prompt install that worked around my countertop install. Juan, Ken, and Tian did a wonderful job on the install - everything was level, plumb, and sturdy, and everything fit perfectly despite the level of customization required. The cabinets are very good quality, made of solid wood and sturdy hardware. I would use Cabinets and More again in a heartbeat.
