For those new to Birmingham, AL, J. Alexander's has been around for a long while. My wife and I used to absolutely love it. For whatever reason, we have not eaten there in a while. Today, it was our turn to go back. Food: I love Prime Rib. I am VERY picky. I am also honest and fair with my reviews. Always. My prime rib which was 16 oz cut was outstanding. I was so happy for this because Prime Rib can be hit or miss even at the best restaurants. My wife got a chicken tie salad and loved it. My son and I got a salad with our meals and J. Alexanders do salads right. My son got a bunn-less cheeseburger and loved it as well. Food was great. Service: Our server was Paul and he did an outstanding job. The servers work in teams so the entire staff made sure we all felt like a rock star. Ambiance: Quite, nice and makes you feel like you are in a nice place. Went here for Father's Day. There was no wait for a table as we went early. I wanted the Maui Steak so I orders that l. The room is set for a laid back relaxing evening. The steak was a awesome. We came in Sunday after church for a great dining experience but that wasn't the case. I've had great experiences in the past but this one did not stand up to previous ones. The service was still great but the food just didn't have the taste or flavor. We started with the spinach and queso dip. The chips were very salt and stale. The dip was cold and very runny. The pork chop, that took the place of the pork tenderloin, needs to be reversed back. The meat had no flavor of it being grilled, the meat was tough even after we ordered it medium temperature. The chicken was the only thing that tasted like it did before. The prime rib was just plain but the cooking temperature was good. Spending almost $200, you want to get what you pay for!! read more

My bf and I fell in love this place. Perfect date night spot. As soon as you step inside it feels very seductive. It's decorated beautifully. The open kitchen concept was amazing. It was a Saturday night so they did have a crowd. I highly recommend making reservations before you do. We both had steak that was prepared beautifully. The food was sensational. Each of our dishes came with its own special sauce that truly opens your tastebuds. We will definitely be back for more. read more

Update: Jan 15 2025 I spoke with Jessica White, the General Manager, late last week. She apologized for the issue I had and issued a refund for the salad and tip. Further, she was candid about what she will be doing to prevent this from reoccurring for customers' in the future. The salad was delicious, as usual and I'm changing the review from 1 to 5 given how this was handled. Original Post: Rather than order online I made a stop in at 515pm on. Saturday to order their grilled chicken salad which is usually delicious. I waited 10 minutes to place the order since the bar was busy. OK but plenty of staff standing around but only the bartender can place the order. Order placed at 527pm. When I asked about it after 30 minutes they said it would be up shortly. Food arrived at 615pm. Really, 48 minutes to make a salad with a little grilled chicken???? When I said this was hardly good customer service, I was told to have a good night and the person walked away. Yes, curt arrogance on top of a bad customer experience. This place should NOT be used for takeout ever! BTW- if you think ordering online is quicker, it isn't. I did that the last time and had the same delay issue AND learned that even when you pickup, they charge a DoorDash and not Grubhub service fee which they don't divulge. Done with this restaurant and I suggest anyone reading this to never order to-go food here. I supported this local establishment and many others during COVID and all I can say is that restaurant on the whole now are full of excuses and service is pitiful! J Alexander's is OFF must for dine-in as well! Came here to celebrate my dad's birthday. We were a party of 8 and the table that they seated us at was so small. I mean I guess that is where they sit their larger parties but it was a no for me. Our waitress was super sweet and an attentive to everyone's orders. However, I personally feel like the overall meals were just OK.. the queso was really watery, the prime rib sandwich just cannot be cooked too, the guest liking after being taken back twice. Apparently the crabcakes were great. However, the roasted chicken was a bit on the dry side. I personally ordered the steak skewer and I have to say it was pretty good. No complaints on my entrée. My dad and his wife said they used to come here quite often and it's just not the same so I'm basing my review off of their opinions hopefully things will change. read more

"J. Alexander's: Where 9 is a sin." Tried to dine with a party of 9 and learned the hard way that J. Alexander's draws the line at 7. Not 8. Definitely not 9. No exceptions, no solutions, just a firm "we can't seat you." For a restaurant that markets itself as polished and professional, the lack of flexibility was stunning. We weren't asking for a banquet hall--just a table that could accommodate one more friend. Instead, we got a cold shoulder and a waitlist. If you're planning a group outing, save yourself the headache and go somewhere that actually wants your business. J. Alexander's might serve steak, but they clearly don't serve hospitality. read more

It's been quite some time since I've been to this location and it was still great! Wait staff was efficient and worked as a team. The FOH manager even assisted the staff. I had the French Dip a the meat just melted in my mouth as it was so tender. The baguette as warm and soft. Cole Slaw was very good. Carrot cake dessert was unlike any I've ever had and was a great compliment to end my meal. The atmosphere was warm and intimate. The glass dividers between booths offered quiet and privacy. After sightseeing in Birmingham, Al. we needed good food fast before the crowds. My daughter's fiancé said he had a place that I would really like-Redlands Grill! He was right! When I walked inside, I was a little apprehensive because it was a flux of people waiting, but we were seated in less than 20 minutes. Our great tasting food was serve rather promptly. We were staying at the Marriott in Ross Bridge and decided to try this restaurant. My husband and I split the Caesar salad which was wonderful and the split was huge. He had a steak and said it was great and I had the potato soup which was good as well. Jesse, our server, was awesome! She was friendly and attentive and gave great recommendations! I don't know when I've been this disappointed in a restaurant I once counted as one of my favorites. For the second time, I went to J Alexander's with a friend for lunch and experienced an inexplicable, lengthy delay. On both occasions, we ordered salads and a drink and encountered a ridiculous delay in receiving our food. Today, 42 minutes after we placed our order, our waitress came back to the table asking US where our salads were. She went to check on them and gave us a lame excuse about a new worker on the salad line. She said the manager would be out to address the issue with us. When the manager arrived, the only compensation she was willing to offer was a complimentary dessert. It was lunchtime and we had ordered salads. We weren't interested in dessert. So, there was nothing she could do to compensate for their poor performance. This was the second time this has happened in the past two months. The first time, the manager was very contrite and actually comped our meals. Apparently, it isn't that big a deal anymore. The food is very good at J Alexander's-- but the food is very good at most successful restaurants. In the future, I'll go somewhere else-- somewhere the service is better and the manager takes pride in it. read more

This was our first time at the restaurant in Hoover, Alabama (we'd been to the restaurant in Memphis). Everything you see in these pictures was fan-tastic! The turkey burger was perfect, as was the red cabbage ( our waiter has been convinced to try it) and I don't eat chocolate cake too much, and this is the reason why. It was warmed to perfection. Dinner today was a birthday celebration for my coworker.there were 11 of us and they chose to sit us in the round booths by the bar which I didn't think was a good idea because we had to sit at seperate tables and 2 sat at the bar. But we all enjoyed ourselves. I ordered the Surf 'n Turf medium rare with the loaded baked potatoe, which was one of the daily specials. The filet was cooked perfect. The steak was well seasoned and very tender. The lobster tail was also seasoned well and came with a side of butter. The loaded baked potato came out steaming hot with the right amount of butter, sourcream, cheese and bacon bits. To wash it all down I chose a Shirley Temple. This meal is definitely at the top of the best meals I've had here. read more

Carrot cake is truly all I will ever need here. It's warm, it's moist, it's spiced well... just YUMMMM. The cajun trout was on special and was absolutely delicious. The entire dinning experience was amazing; from the host, to the wait staff, to the food. I got the steak maui with mashed potatoes and a Caesar salad. The steak had a great match of sweet and savory with a wood fired taste. The potato's were creamy but with little chunks of potatoes that I thought went well with the natural gravy of the steak. The Caesar salad dressing and croutons you can tell were made in house, and the entire salad was tossed with just the right amount of dressing!
