Best meal I have had in over a year. We had the ribs, chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, the spinach artichoke dip app and carrot cake for dessert. Every single thing was excellent and the carrot cake was the best I've ever had. The service was not the best we've had, but every person has an off day. Our waitress just seemed very distracted. The prices are higher than some but definitely worth it. The atmosphere is also really nice and relaxing. If you've never been to a J.Alexander's I definitely recommend it. For various events lately, I've been here a couple of times within the last few months. Each time, I was very pleased with table service, our waiter or waitress, the timing of food delivery, and great tasting food. My plans for the next visit is to try the amazing steak everyone speaks so highly of; I'm not really a steak person but it looked so delicious, so I still have to explore that lol. I had dinner here last night with my grandson and granddaughter. It was the birthday eve of my grandson. We had dinner last year here to celebrate his birthday and our waitress remembered us. Our dinner was excellent as usual my granddaughter and I had a filet of beef with broccoli and the orzo and wild rice salad. there is nothing like a good cut of beef properly prepared. My grandson had the steak and fries. He said it was delicious and we all had one of his fries because there is a huge mound of them. Our waitress was the best, she checked on us, but did not intrude. She brought my grandson, a complementary piece of carrot cake with a candle stuck in it. I think maybe this should be an annual tradition because we all loved it. I recommend a reservation. I met a friend here for dinner. There was a 45 minute wait. We waited. I am not a big fan of the menu as there are not a lot of options on the menu that appeal to me. I do not eat steak. I do not eat pork. I do not like big chicken but ended up ordering the rotisserie chicken with nyo mac& cheese plus glass of Riesling. I enjoyed the Mac & cheese; it was okay. I loved the Riesling. I went to J. Alexander's for the first time with a group of my co-workers on yesterday and I was not overly impressed to be honest. There were several things that kind of bothered me. When my co-worker called to set up our lunch reservation, she told them it would be a group of about 13-16. They did not mention that everyone would not be at the same table. Our group was split up between three tables, which I did not like because we all were not able to converse together like we expected. About 10 of us arrived together, but the hostess acted like she didn't want to seat us until more arrived. She did go ahead and do it, but I didn't understand her hesitation. The lighting was too dark for lunch, in my opinion and it was uncomfortably humid in the restaurant. I'm normally cold, but it was warm and there was a smell in the restaurant that several of us noticed. The best way to describe it would be stale. Now, the veggie burger I had was delicious, but I did not like the macaroni and cheese. I know it's suppose to be really good, but I did not care for it. Sometimes, simple recipes are really the best. The loaded baked potato my co-worker has looked really good though. All in all, I guess because of the hype surrounding this restaurant, I expected more. I may return for dinner with my husband and give them another chance to wow me. read more

We made a reservation for six for my sister's birthday and really enjoyed ourselves. While the table we sat at was quite small for our party, it was nice and quaint. I loved the candle in the center of the table. The service - Our waiter was very sweet. I had my wisdom teeth removed recently and she helped me choose items that were soft enough for me to eat. She even let me try the soup of the day prior to ordering to see if I could eat it. The food - I ended up just getting a huge plate of the smashed potatoes and they were amazing: covered in butter, hot, with melty cheese. Everyone else mostly enjoyed their food. The steak looked tender and cooked perfectly. I tried the Mac and didn't enjoy the flavor as much as I thought I would. They don't use traditional cheeses in it so beware. I also had a small bite of the chicken and it was juicy. Everything came out hot and relatively quickly. Overall I would definitely come back for the food, service, and atmosphere. We haven't been to Redlands for a couple of years so yesterday we decided to give it a try. Hubby ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and broccoli and said it was delicious. I ordered the Southern chicken salad WITHOUT the chicken and a couple other ingredients. I didn't ask if they would reduce the cost because I was only getting the base salad instead of the salad with meat...I just "assumed" the price would be reduced. I get base salads at Firebird's all the time, and they reduce the price because I get it without meat. Well, when the check came, I was surprised to see the price had not been reduced to take into account I did not order meat with the salad. My salad was good, but not for the price of a salad with meat. I suppose most people go there fore mixed drinks and wine, but we are beer drinkers. They don't have a good selection of beers, and they don't give you a list...you have to depend on the servers to remember the names of the beers they have. Our server was great...his name is Tyler, and he was very informative on anything I asked him. Overall food was good, service was great, but my two issues were with not having a beer list and being overcharged for a salad. read more

I ordered an Alex's Salad with no tomatoes and no cucumbers with dressing on the side. None of these instructions were followed. I notified the server who notified a manager. The manager did come to the table and ask if there was anything to do, but by that time I was eating the salad and picking out the cucumbers. There was no need to waste the food. The manager offered a free dessert but neither of us could eat a dessert, so I said "no" when asked by the server. I expected something to be done, either give us a dessert to go (without the server asking) or even take our beverages (soda and tea) off the order. Even though the salad was edible, the kitchen paid no attention to the special instructions and the manager could have taken something off the bill. To make matters worse, there was a screaming child seated behind us. This was not a pleasant experience. You don't see managers walking around like you used to. We have been eating here for a long time and management would always walk around asking how everything was going. This was pre-pandemic. Things are not the same post-pandemic. We have to drive across town to eat here so there is an additional time investment. read more

This review is more about the business practices of this restaurant. I worked here for almost a year, and there were several instances of servers, server assistants, hostesses, and bartenders walking out because of how poorly management treats the staff. There was an instance where, right after I began working there, a server who had worked there for 20 years was told to, "not worry about coming back," because she wanted to take 2 weeks off from work to go visit her dying father. Another time, a coworker got temporarily suspended for a week because she called out on a Saturday to watch her niece while her family attended her aunt's funeral. One time a person who was a hostess slipped and fell while walking from the parking lot to the door and fractured her spine. She was in such intense pain that she could barely stand, but she was required to work for another hour and a half until her replacement arrived because that was their priority. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was that Lilly, the administrator, was walking around telling the servers, server assistants, and cooks that management was planning to fire all of the hostesses because, "they're just not good enough." That type of behavior is highly inappropriate, especially for someone who has been given and administrative position. I ended up finishing that shift and never going back. The food is great, but the way they treat the staff who carry the entire business on their backs is just disgusting. read more

We went here on Christmas Eve with my family. I was prepared for it to be busy but not this busy. We waited for what seemed an eternity and were finally seated after I asked the hostess how much longer. They quoted 30 mins but closed to an hour. But it was Christmas So I ordered the mr jacks crispy chicken .... I love these small stick fries they have. They remind me of those cans of potatoes sticks we ate as children. The chicken is super moist and crispy as well. The waitress was very nice and super happy considering she was working Christmas Eve. My daughter ordered the cheeseburger and it was huge ( they don't have a kids menu by the way so be prepared to spend 15$ on your 10 year old who will eat 2 bites and be full). Overall the food was good but a little overpriced for what it actually was. I do think the wait staff was doing a great job considering how busy it was. read more

Very disappointed in entire experience. We have wanted to try this place for about a year now. Every time we go the wait is insane. Last night was no different an hour and a half for a table. We however decided we were waiting we really had high hopes for the place. When I got the text our table was finally ready I came from the parking lot into the store there were three people in line trying to get on a list, I waited patiently and when I got to the front the lady said your five minutes has passed we sat someone else in your seat.. ummm excuse me, literally was RIGHT HERE waiting for you to put the people in front of me in line on a list. She acted like she was doing me a huge favor and I was literally one minute over five minutes and they were all standing there no one was seating anyone. We got to a bar table and the server was so rude from the get go, he acted like it was a HUGE bother to him to even talk to us. It was really awkward and made for a terrible evening. He would disappear for 10-15 minutes at a time we would be without drinks, no chips for queso and when he came back finally queso was cold. Waited over an hour for our baked potatoes and steak/lobster and it was cold.. COLD.. why? Probably because our waiter let it sit there while he was hiding somewhere. We didn't complain and just ate our food and tried to leave. Couldn't find the waiter for another 10 minutes then asked for to go boxes so we could heat our food up at home. Another 10 minutes and the box and bill came. Paid and left vowing to never return. I seriously do NOT understand why the place is soooo packed the service was very very bad.
