This is our regular stop when we drive into Birmingham. We get the prime rib every time and look forward to our special meal. This, unfortunately, was a disappointment. While the crust of the prime rib has amazing flavor, the whole thing was very tough. When you pay $100 for lunch you do expect excellence. Prime rib should never be this tough. Unfortunately, for the first time in 14 years we discussed changing our routine on the next trip. On the plus side, the service was excellent. read more

The ambiance was nice with a structural ceiling of large wooden beams and the seating and lighting were also warm and inviting. There are many posts on Yelp with menus and prices. I refer you to these. I didn't rate J Alexander's a 5 because the French Dip I ordered was served very rare. For the rare meat lovers out there it's perfect for you. The atmosphere? Upscale but welcoming. It's polished without feeling pretentious. The kind of place you take a client when you want to say, "I am professional and competent," but also, "Yes, I absolutely will be ordering dessert." Lighting is forgiving. Booths are comfortable. Confidence levels rise immediately. The food is consistent and reliably good. The halibut was reported to be excellent. The steak was cooked to perfection, exactly as ordered. No surprises. Just a kitchen that knows what it's doing and does it well. I went with the Thai Crunch Salad. Fresh, flavorful, solid choice. Now... about that dressing. I had to ask for extra three times before it finally arrived. By the third request, I felt like I was presenting a formal proposal to the dressing committee. When it showed up, it felt less like a condiment and more like a hard-earned victory. Service overall was friendly, just a bit slow on the follow-through. Not bad enough to derail the experience, but noticeable. And then... dessert. The carrot cake. Let's be clear. The carrot cake was not just dessert. It was the moment. The headliner. The reason you loosen your belt and say, "We're doing this." Moist, perfectly spiced, generous layers, and that frosting? Dangerous. If the rest of the meal was a business meeting, the carrot cake was the standing ovation at the end. Bottom line: excellent food, comfortable upscale atmosphere, strong choice for entertaining clients, minor dressing drama, and a carrot cake that deserves its own fan club. Four stars. I have dined at J. Alexander's for many years, ever since it first opened, and I honestly can't recall ever having to send a meal back to the kitchen. Unfortunately, this experience was very disappointing. My steak was ordered medium well but was served well done. While I understand that mistakes happen, what was most disappointing was the lack of customer service. Neither the server nor the manager made any meaningful effort to address the situation or make it right. I know my business may not make a difference to the restaurant, but it matters to me where I choose to spend my money. There are plenty of dining options, and based on this experience, I won't be returning. Customer service seems to have become a lost art, and that's unfortunate. read more

Our favorite, easy date night spot! One of the most consistent restaurants in Birmingham. I have so many favorites on the menu, including the Thai Kai Salad and the Cypress salad. Accommodating seating for my mom who is on a walker. The server was amazing. Definitely make a reservation. It's a nice restaurant and food is good. Most recent visit was on the occasion of a friend's bday. Six women, individual checks, 'just water', cocktails and wine drinkers, a vegan diner, and our server could not have been more accommodating. All the food arrived at the same time, everything was as ordered and she checked in with us to be certain all was well. They did not add the customary 18% for our party of 6, which was very appreciated. I sincerely hope I'm correct when I say that each woman tipped above that percentage because our server more than deserved it. Also of note, when I made the reservation I asked for a table in a quieter section because half the group had hearing issues. Our table was round and in the center section and was perfectly situated. I used to love going to this restaurant for their baby back ribs.. they truly had the best baby back ribs. They have now changed the recipe to a very spicy hot version and don't even offer the old ones. I know this could seem petty but to me it's just bad business to change something that was doing so well. It's like when coke tried to sell us on classic coke because the new coke was so bad. Outstanding Service from Ja'Kobi! Ja'Kobi was our waiter at J. Alexander's, and I can honestly say he was superb from start to finish. I'm visiting Birmingham from Philly, and this was hands-down the best service I've experienced since being here. From the moment we sat down, Ja'Kobi was attentive, professional, and genuinely kind. He was knowledgeable about the menu, made excellent recommendations, and checked on us at just the right times without ever being intrusive. His energy was welcoming, his attitude was positive, and he made us feel truly cared for as guests, not just another table. What really stood out was his attention to detail and consistency. Drinks were refilled promptly, our food arrived exactly as ordered, and everything flowed smoothly. You could tell he takes pride in his work and understands what great hospitality really looks like. I'm very familiar with J. Alexander's, but haven't had it in a while so decided to stop by. With this particular visit, it was somewhat interesting. Thankfully we made a reservation because on a Wednesday evening, it was actually quite busy. I was immediately seated, but my guest was running late. I was then greeted and ordered a water and tea. While waiting for my guest to arrive, I was checked on quite a few times, but once they arrived, oddly I wasn't. Eventually our waitress came and took our appetizer and food order, and my guest's drink order. While my appetizer of a garden side salad and the soup of the day, which was like a creamy chicken noodle soup (sorry can't remember the name) came out, the waitress forgot to brink out my guest's drinks, but was courteous and apologized after we brought it to her attention. I also noticed that my entree, which was on special that day, of steak medallions with mashed potatoes and broccoli actually came out first before my guest's burger. The burger was a simple, but a special order. It was supposed to come with no condiments/no cheese and medium well. When it finally came, it came as it normally does... with everything/cheese and it was cooked medium. After explaining the mishap and bright out the dish again, we noticed that they basically served the same burger patty, but without the condiments/cheese (even though you could see where the cheese originally was placed). We then asked for a manager and explained the issue. She apologized and brought out a new burger, even though it was once again cooked medium, instead medium well. However, they were nice enough to comp my guest's meal. As far as my food is concerned, it was served correctly. It was cooked to order and served fresh as always. I will say, you can simply get full off of the side garden salad and their soup, which is a great size. That soup was so good too! I actually enjoyed my soup more than anything else I ate lol. Had lunch there today and the food was absolutely amazing! I had the Steak Maui and the Mac and Cheese. What they marinated that ribeye in stole the show. I would have loved to give this place 5 stars but my steak was overcooked and my waitress was not customer service friendly. I'm trying to get around to trying all the places i said i need to try one day. Glad i finally got to stop in a J.Alexander's. We had to call to get reservations because online will not let you schedule reservations for over 4 people. It was a painless encounter, but they do need to correct that online. We had a fantastic and attentive server, all of the staff was very friendly. I had devil eggs for the app, nothing to write home around honestly. They did not reinvent the wheel. Skip them for the cost. A martini, which was strong and tasty basically two martini so it was worth the cost absolutely. I had the crab cakes for my main. So much crab, worth the $34 dollars absoutely. We also had the chocolate cake, it is very fudge like. Not a favorite for my family so we didn't enjoy it. Honestly nothing was wrong but it's not a place i would rush back to. There was quite a few families out after church, and tvs at the bar. I would recommend for date night or older family dinner (teens or young adult kids) but not drinks out with the girls. read more

Who needs a menu, once you've had the Thai Kai salad? It's the best! I order it every time! Fresh greens, thin-cut chicken, crispy wonton strips and sweet peanut vinaigrette. I choose this place almost any time I'm in the area, and this time it was for my birthday. One salad and an iced tea and my day is perfect! The only reason it doesn't get five stars this time is because the salad didn't come with as much dressing as usual (it was a bit dry), and our server was absent for most of our meal. We really enjoyed our dinner here the other night. They have a decent cocktail menu and lots of wines plus a full bar so they can pretty much make whatever you want. My friend and I picked two things and asked to split them. They did it really nicely and provided us each a generous amount of fries to go with our sandwich. I ate my sandwich right away. It was really really good. I love the skinny fries that came with it. They were great. I actually saved my salad for the next day. It was still good the next day but I hadn't put any dressing on it. Nice looking establishment. Went on a Thursday night with four people around 7:00pm, and had to wait 30 min for a table. This is not a complaint, it shows this is a popular place. We ordered two appetizers the Deviled Eggs- they were good but nothing special. They had a special appetizer of Steak Egg-rolls - those were amazing. They are not on the menu, but if it comes back as a special, get it, you wont be disappointed. I ordered the Cypress Salad with Blue Cheese Dressing. It was the perfect salad. Well it has been a while since I have posted any reviews but I have to say J Alexander hits the mark everytime! They had a period a while back when it was so-so but they have it under control now. The crab cake is a MUST try it is always perfect, well worth the price. The service is excellent we always have Jessie if she is available. The Hong Kong shrimp is another winner. For those new to Birmingham, AL, J. Alexander's has been around for a long while. My wife and I used to absolutely love it. For whatever reason, we have not eaten there in a while. Today, it was our turn to go back. Food: I love Prime Rib. I am VERY picky. I am also honest and fair with my reviews. Always. My prime rib which was 16 oz cut was outstanding. I was so happy for this because Prime Rib can be hit or miss even at the best restaurants. My wife got a chicken tie salad and loved it. My son and I got a salad with our meals and J. Alexanders do salads right. My son got a bunn-less cheeseburger and loved it as well. Food was great. Service: Our server was Paul and he did an outstanding job. The servers work in teams so the entire staff made sure we all felt like a rock star. Ambiance: Quite, nice and makes you feel like you are in a nice place. I don't know when I've been this disappointed in a restaurant I once counted as one of my favorites. For the second time, I went to J Alexander's with a friend for lunch and experienced an inexplicable, lengthy delay. On both occasions, we ordered salads and a drink and encountered a ridiculous delay in receiving our food. Today, 42 minutes after we placed our order, our waitress came back to the table asking US where our salads were. She went to check on them and gave us a lame excuse about a new worker on the salad line. She said the manager would be out to address the issue with us. When the manager arrived, the only compensation she was willing to offer was a complimentary dessert. It was lunchtime and we had ordered salads. We weren't interested in dessert. So, there was nothing she could do to compensate for their poor performance. This was the second time this has happened in the past two months. The first time, the manager was very contrite and actually comped our meals. Apparently, it isn't that big a deal anymore. The food is very good at J Alexander's-- but the food is very good at most successful restaurants. In the future, I'll go somewhere else-- somewhere the service is better and the manager takes pride in it. read more

My bf and I fell in love this place. Perfect date night spot. As soon as you step inside it feels very seductive. It's decorated beautifully. The open kitchen concept was amazing. It was a Saturday night so they did have a crowd. I highly recommend making reservations before you do. We both had steak that was prepared beautifully. The food was sensational. Update: Jan 15 2025 I spoke with Jessica White, the General Manager, late last week. She apologized for the issue I had and issued a refund for the salad and tip. Further, she was candid about what she will be doing to prevent this from reoccurring for customers' in the future. The salad was delicious, as usual and I'm changing the review from 1 to 5 given how this was handled. Original Post: Rather than order online I made a stop in at 515pm on. Saturday to order their grilled chicken salad which is usually delicious. I waited 10 minutes to place the order since the bar was busy. OK but plenty of staff standing around but only the bartender can place the order. Order placed at 527pm. When I asked about it after 30 minutes they said it would be up shortly. Food arrived at 615pm. Really, 48 minutes to make a salad with a little grilled chicken???? When I said this was hardly good customer service, I was told to have a good night and the person walked away. Yes, curt arrogance on top of a bad customer experience. This place should NOT be used for takeout ever! BTW- if you think ordering online is quicker, it isn't. I did that the last time and had the same delay issue AND learned that even when you pickup, they charge a DoorDash and not Grubhub service fee which they don't divulge. Done with this restaurant and I suggest anyone reading this to never order to-go food here. I supported this local establishment and many others during COVID and all I can say is that restaurant on the whole now are full of excuses and service is pitiful! J Alexander's is OFF must for dine-in as well!
