    Mushroom flatbread... yum!!!

We always stay at the Renaissance when we come to Birmingham mostly because of this restaurant. We usually do their breakfast buffet but this time we tried dinner. It did not disappoint!! I had the mushroom flatbread and it was delicious! Hubby had the halibut and the potatoes. The bartender made hubby a special hibiscus lemonade. What a lovely night and great service!!

Started the evening with a palate cleanse. Fresh dill was so good!

Wonderful evening at Brock's for dinner. Atmosphere was wonderful. The service was attentive but not overbearing. The food was exceptionally presented and tasted great. Combination of flavors to enhance each dish is very different than the majority or restaurants. We definitely will be back.

We ate here for breakfast and had the buffet. It was unbelievably good! Some of my favorites offered: zucchini frittata, French toast with bananas foster, stone ground grits from a local farm, mini cinnamon rolls, omelet station, fresh fruit bar, oatmeal bar. The service was very friendly and fast. The views from the window this time of year was beautiful as well.

Bacon, hash brown, sausage, biscuits and gravy.

Breakfast at the buffet was amazing. Everything was delicious, and the chef made omelette was amazing. The grits were stellar!

We ordered off of their lunch menu and got the short rib sandwich with brussels and their cobb salad. While I personally can use a bigger portion, I was not starving at the end of the meal lol. I guess it is good policy to leave people wanting more, right? Food was tasty overall and they definitely have some unique items or ingredients in their entrees. You will run probably at least around 30 dollars for two at lunch. We obviously caught them at a busy time even though we were the only two there at the beginning as they were expecting a large party and they were prepping catering food, but our food still came out within a reasonable amount of time. I did notice one of the chef on his phone one minute and then touching cooked food that he's serving the next to package it for catering....without washing his hands. I can't help but find that a bit gross when I consider how very dirty a phone is since that's literally something you touch all day, all the time, regardless of what you're doing. I will leave it at that, ha.

Our server was Kaylan and she was fun, gave us recommendations and provided an excellent customer service experience. She was great!!!!! We started with their delicious chicken fingers & fries ( they forgot to bring the slaw). I was kinda disappointed since I am a coleslaw fan. I got so full, so quick eating the chicken fingers & fries. We also had their spinach /queso dip- this is a really tasty appetizer. Only complaint, wish it had been a little hotter. I didn't order an entree(remember I said how full I was). I enjoyed a glass of wine instead. My friends had the salmon dish and the steak Maui. Both entrees were nicely prepared and they seemed to enjoy their meal choices. Lastly, you can't come to J Alexander without ordering their carrot cake. It's a warm slice of HEAVEN!!! It's a MUST HAVE!!!!

Alexander's and then 3 places from 1976, the Bicentennial year. I lived in Birmingham in 2010, and my friend, who lived very close to the Hoover Mall told me about a cool promotion at J. Alexander's. I believe it was a Monday gambling deal. Alabama laws on gaming were strict; so this was maybe the closest to gambling I could get. It was some expensive steak, and the server would flip a coin, which I would call heads or tails. If I was correct, I'd get the steak free! I lost; so I paid the hefty bill. At least it was hefty for my underpaid job of that time. But I had fun, and I enjoyed the steak & nice service.

The restaurant is gorgeous, with beautiful artwork adorning the walls and cool tables all around. The second area of seating had a nice bar area and more gorgeous artwork on the walls. Our server was super kind and gave us time to review the menu while he shared the specials. I decided on the Fried Shrimp plate, which came with sweet potato fries and slaw. My coworkers got different things from the menu, and a couple of them asked for his recommendations. He said the crab cakes were amazing and also the scallops. It took about 20-25 minutes or so for all the food to be ready because we had a large party. Everyone at our table seemed to really enjoy their meal. My shrimp were perfectly seasoned and fried. The sweet potato fries had a good flavor to them. The slaw was a little more liquid than I am used to, but it was good. The only reason I cannot give the full 5 stars? Parking at lunchtime is ABYSMAL, and this was at 12:30pm (on the back side of lunchtime). We had to "fight" the Chick-Fil-A drive-thru traffic to turn into the parking lot for Bistro V. Then we had to circle the parking lot multiple times to find parking places. I finally found a place behind the Regions Bank to park and walk back to the restaurant. It was a mess out there. Other than the horrible parking, the food was great and the place was beautiful. I would definitely recommend you try it out!

On my last group dinner there I simply had the Boston Bibb Salad with a cup of the shrimp corn chowder, I found both satisfying. Our server was stellar, anticipating our needs and then giving us room to enjoy. Apologies for what might appear as a vague review... Many people seem to really enjoy the restaurant, and it seems to have an active clientele, I just haven't found a reason to initiate going back myself.

I sat on the patio, which made for a relaxing dining experience. Carlos took great care of me and provided friendly, attentive service throughout my visit. I started with the Oyster Pot, which includes four raw, four Rockefeller, and four chargrilled oysters. It was the perfect way to sample each style. While all three were good, the chargrilled and Rockefeller oysters were the standouts for me. The Rockefeller oysters were my favorite, so I couldn't resist ordering another dozen of those. If you're an oyster lover and can't decide which style to order, I highly recommend starting with the Oyster Pot. I choose the air conditioning over the entertainment but from what I was able to hear the young lady singing is very talented. When I came in I was NOT immediately greeted. It took a while to be acknowledged but once I was seated I had a great experience. My server was great and the atmosphere is really nice. It's dark with flickering hanging chandeliers. The place was clean with people actively cleaning. I started things off with a strawberry cheesecake martini and it was so good I wanted to curl up in a corner and tell them to keep them coming. It was like a dessert in a cup so if sweet isn't your thing, definitely skip this one. It was, however, not sickeningly sweet. It was perfect. I got a cup of the gumbo yaya, which has shrimp, crab, chicken, and sausage. It was some of the best gumbo I have had in a while. It was perfectly seasoned and had a little kick. Next, I had one of their specialties, the NOLA Chicken. You can choose grilled or blackened chicken served on top of creamy mashed potatoes with diced tomatoes, green onions, and covered in a delicious creamy lobster sauce with a side of grilled asparagus. It was delicious. The seasoning was spot on and the chicken was tender. The lobster sauce made the dish. My only complaint with the dish was a single stalk of reedy asparagus but the others were tender. My last course was the bread pudding. I really wanted to say how delicious it was but it was just good, not great. It was made from Gambino bread and had a warm whiskey cream sauce and chocolate drizzle but the pudding was missing something. Fruit like raisins maybe? It was just a little too bland for me. I'm definitely trying the key lime pie next time. I recommend this place for a nice night out
