Plenty of variety!
Jose G.

An authentic stop for Mexican pastries and a modest selection. It's not quite what I'm used to growing up in the city but I like this place. I came here because I heard about their "tres leches" cake. Traditional kind of cake and it was good. Not a favorite but it was good. Most are very sweet and it was nice not to be overwhelmed by sweetness! I know, too much sweets! What's wrong with me! They have a nice variety of flavors as you can get fillings like mocha, coconut, pineapple, etc. A half tray (serves about 25-30) costs about $65 which for this type of cake is a bit high. Their sweet bread or pan dulce is very authentic and excellent quality. Well worth the pricier costs. You always want to try a concha when you visit a Mexican bakery, theirs is awesome. For now I've got to stick with a 3 but if your in the area it's worth a shot.

Iove love love their tres leches cake.. best in Schaumburg area. I just wish they have few more English speaking people but haha.. there is beauty in making people understand. The owner is a lovely cute lady and she bakes most wonderful cake

fondant cake was amazingly yummy, perfect and beautiful!

This beautiful little gem of a bakery made the most beautiful and yummiest fondant cake I've ever had! Super moist and not too sweet. Just perfect. It was a chocolate cake shaped as a stack of books of my daughters favorite reads! Cake was stuffed with freshly cut strawberries and chocolate mousse!!! Everyone in my family loved it! Made my daughters day! she was so happy! I recently went back for their pastries! Try the chocolate muffins and the chorizo crossiant!! OMG!!! amazing! If your looking for any type of cake, this is the perfect bakery for cake!!!

With demand and supply, we now have a vast variety of Asian bakeries in the suburbs. However, we…read morecontinue to keep Pastry House Hippo on our revisit list because there are several baked goods that we thoroughly enjoy: melon pan, choco melon pan, cream pan, Doraemon, apple custard pan, and raisin bread. We recently diverged from our usuals and tried the sando with pork katsu. It had some shredded vegetable and ketchup-base sauce. I am indifferent to it but I am not opposed to trying the other savory items. We have gone on different days and times over the years. The shelves are almost always well-stocked. Sometimes we would have a brief wait for them to replenish the raisin bread loaves but it is the mister's favorite so it is worth it. The bakery staff are very friendly and quick so the lines are kept moving.

This has been my routine for decades, yet I just realized that I had never actually left a rating for it. What makes this bakery especially appealing is its soft, airy, and smooth bread and buns, which are handmade using ingredients sourced directly from Japan. My personal favorite is the red bean bun. While my sister loves their sandwiches and milk bread, which has an incredibly soft, fluffy, and moist texture. All of their bread and buns are made fresh daily. Many years ago, they even allowed their staff to take home any unsold sandwiches and bread at the end of the day! With increasing competition from newer Korean and Taiwanese bakeries, I hope Pastry House Hippo continues to stay competitive. As a self-serve bakery, it would be nice if the buns were individually wrapped, something many other bakeries already do, to help prevent contamination from careless customers. My most recent visit was on the second day of the new year, and I was happy to see the shop bustling with customers. I hope this little bakery continues to thrive for many years to come.

You won't miss it. The store is bright, colorful, and beautiful! That's very typical of an upscale Japanese snack and treat shop. The aesthetic packaging and the vibrant, enticing mochi and snacks really appeal to many senses! I truly feel like a kid in a candy store every time I step inside. The staff are always very friendly and helpful. Today, the second day of the New Year, there were so many people everywhere inside Mitsuwa, including J. Sweet. Even so, the two female staff members were amazingly patient and polite with every customer, they truly made the experience even better. I was so happy to find a stunning Lunar New Year cookie assortment gift box. The festive red tin features the year 2026 and a galloping horse as the star of the design, that's perfect for celebrating the Year of the Horse! While $35 for 0.4 pounds of cookies (20 cookies to be exact) is a bit on the pricey side, they look absolutely delicious, and I know my loved ones will be so happy to receive such a lovely gift.

Our Experience was good, not great…read more We did some research about all of the local ice cream places and our kids picked Kurimu because it seemed to be the most unique. Initial impression wasn't great... The smell was really the main reason why. The shop itself definitely had a smell, I can't really describe what it was but it was not pleasant. There was one person working, he was polite but did not have much personality. Most of our questions were met with him telling us that we ordered "over there" as he points to the register. It just did not have a very welcoming energy. Only of our kids got ice cream as the flavors did not catch them like they had hoped it would. My Youngest got a coconut ice cream with waffle cone (she loved it), it was a subtle coconut flavor but very refreshing. My oldest daughter got a match drink w boba, hers was also good but not her favorite. I ended up getting the soft serve mix (Tofu/Black Sesame) which was definitely unique and I did enjoy it but no one else i was with did. After checking out, we were offered free stickers which was a nice gesture and I talked about their Japanese Car theme which seemed to liven up the man working momentarily. My family was not impressed but I enjoyed the experience. Very unique compared to what we are used to seeing. I would most likely return, but I am not confident my family would follow.

Our favorite was the Ube Oreo ice cream. It was super creamy, and the Oreo pieces were the perfect complement to the rich ube flavor. We also tried the tiramisu ice cream. It was good, but I personally didn't think it tasted much like tiramisu. That said, there were so many other flavors that caught my eye, so I'm excited to come back and try more. My sister ordered the jasmine milk tea, and she really enjoyed it. She especially liked that it wasn't overly sweet. Overall, this is a fun spot with unique flavors and a great selection. We'll definitely be back to try more!
