We went in on a Saturday afternoon and there were a fair number of people there while we were around. I ordered the hot chocolate. I found it rich and creamy. My husband got the iced black coffee and he enjoyed it. I enjoyed Around Cafe and hope the stick around for a long time!

I used to frequent pastry house hippo at Mitsuwa around once a week for a few years. This place I…read morewent to once pretty early on after going to crescent bakery to give them a try their chocolate cake didn't hold up to house hippo, so I wrote them off. I revisited when I had a bad experience with house hippo not sure if they changed their chefs or recipe but it was a bad experience across several slices I purchased that day. Long story short I enjoyed the slices here quite a bit and even found their matcha cake tasting better than house hippo's the grade of matcha is higher quality as well. I would say the Kahlua, Tiramisu and the Matcha are among my favorite slices so far, they are glorious with a nice cup of tea and not so sweet that I regret eating a slice and can even consider going for a 2nd. Their crepe I would say is better than Hippo's also, but pastry house hippo had the best chocolate and unique cheese cake I have ever tried. This place does offer unique slices I can't find elsewhere in their own right and will find me as a repeat customer for those slices and the lack of crowds at mitsuwa is another bonus. Cons: When boxed wax paper for each individual cake is not present, which helps when taking the cake out of the box without having to grab the cake.

With demand and supply, we now have a vast variety of Asian bakeries in the suburbs. However, we…read morecontinue to keep Pastry House Hippo on our revisit list because there are several baked goods that we thoroughly enjoy: melon pan, choco melon pan, cream pan, Doraemon, apple custard pan, and raisin bread. We recently diverged from our usuals and tried the sando with pork katsu. It had some shredded vegetable and ketchup-base sauce. I am indifferent to it but I am not opposed to trying the other savory items. We have gone on different days and times over the years. The shelves are almost always well-stocked. Sometimes we would have a brief wait for them to replenish the raisin bread loaves but it is the mister's favorite so it is worth it. The bakery staff are very friendly and quick so the lines are kept moving.

This has been my routine for decades, yet I just realized that I had never actually left a rating for it. What makes this bakery especially appealing is its soft, airy, and smooth bread and buns, which are handmade using ingredients sourced directly from Japan. My personal favorite is the red bean bun. While my sister loves their sandwiches and milk bread, which has an incredibly soft, fluffy, and moist texture. All of their bread and buns are made fresh daily. Many years ago, they even allowed their staff to take home any unsold sandwiches and bread at the end of the day! With increasing competition from newer Korean and Taiwanese bakeries, I hope Pastry House Hippo continues to stay competitive. As a self-serve bakery, it would be nice if the buns were individually wrapped, something many other bakeries already do, to help prevent contamination from careless customers. My most recent visit was on the second day of the new year, and I was happy to see the shop bustling with customers. I hope this little bakery continues to thrive for many years to come.

The Dead Kennedys had a song about this place:…read more "Too young! Too young to f***" I walked into Daisy's, looked behind the counter, and immediately felt like Chris Hansen was going to rappel through the ceiling. The P.O.A. Index wasn't merely unavailable, it had been confiscated by the State of Illinois, sealed in an evidence bag, and transported somewhere my lawyer strongly advised me not to follow. Everyone working there looked so young that instead of wondering whether anyone was attractive, I started wondering when everyone's mother was coming to pick them up. One girl asked what flavor I wanted and I nearly replied, "Whatever people ate before you were born." This wasn't an ice cream run anymore. This was a mortality check. I entered Daisy's as a reasonably youthful man looking for dessert and walked out mentally pricing burial plots and wondering whether Costco sells Metamucil by the pallet. Fortunately, the ice cream was excellent... except for the non-sensical names. Besides the one labeled "smores" it was like trying to decide the enigma machine from WWII. If one can decipher the flavors... the ice cream is rich, creamy, enormous portions, exactly the kind of old-school neighborhood ice cream that makes you temporarily forget you've apparently become old enough to have employees serving you who don't remember a world before smartphones. Five stars... begrudgingly. I went in wanting a cone. I came out eligible for a reverse mortgage.
