My go to when I'm feeling like Latin. Love the churrasco (skirt steak) it comes with amazing chimichurri (sorry about any misspelling) The pernil is awesome and so is the arroz con pollo. They have great lunch specials as well. The pastellilos are great as well, my only compliant is they are a little pricey (pastellilos) I also LOVE the sweet plantains and the tres leches!! Good food not great. The yuca is always dry, I mean always. That or under cooked. The pernil is tasty and the Cubanos are good. The arroz con gandules can really use a touch of home, too restauranty. The staff however are always very friendly and helpful. They are worth a visit. I wanna give them 4 stars but I can't just yet. Update* apparently this owner doesn't read yelp. I come from Puerto Rican heritage and this place is great for the prices. I have been a loyal customer even before when they were referred to as "Salsa". Staff are very friendly, food is decently priced, and the environment is home-y. Reminds me of Sunday mornings at my Abuela's house. Pasteles are a must try! If you're looking for "real Puerto Rican food" as said in previous reviews; you would have to go to the Island itself as with any culture (same as Jamaica, Bahamas, etc.). Strange to see such a wide variety of reviews for this restaurant. I may have missed having a regular family style Puerto Rican meal at home in a while but I certainly know what is authentic tasting vs a generic implementation of the food. What have I had that I can vouch for? Start with Arroz con Pollo. My abuela would make a version with a whole gallina (from top to bottom) in one pot with rice and chicken mixed. I miss her and thankfully Izla's version brought back great memories. Was it exactly like her version no, but we go to restaurants to experience their food. If you want it just like you want it, maybe you should cook it yourself at home. I've also had their Chicken Empanadas, Pasteles, and desserts too. Actually it was the Tres Leches Cake and Flan that made my brain say "Yes, I must share my experience with others." Tried and hoped the place improved but it was much worse than my previous visit. They're still not using proper dinner plates. The girl at the counter hands you cheap paper plates with packaged plastic utensils. The flavor is no longer what it used to be. The overall atmosphere is that of a dirty cheap restaurant with greasy floors and a filthy bathroom . The only thought is that being the only bathroom workers use it too then they handle your food. forget this place, go to ramiros in Mahopac. The name of the restaurant has changed to Izla, but same owners they said. Don't order take out from here. I don't think the Pernil was fresh, it was extra salty, and they didn't give any green hot sauce. They forgot to add my sides. So no yellow rice and black beans for me. I also ordered chicken empanadas, I got beef. Called for a refund or if they can deliver the correct items and missing items, they said they didn't know how to do it, the boss wasn't there. They apologized but nothing else. It wasn't even busy. so I went back for my refund but they wouldn't give me one, they just gave me my sides and empanadas. really? what am I going to do with the sides? I threw out the pernil. with bad service like this it's no wonder they changed their name. read more

Salsa is awesome! My aunt recommended this place to me because I've been begging her to make pasteles, which happens to be the most time-consuming thing in the world. As soon as I got in the door, I wanted to dance! The music is so good. So, as with any family gathering, we ordered in abundance. OMFG, the pasteles. You could taste how good the plantains used were. (I can also attest to this by trying some of the fried plantains we ordered.) The arroz con pollo looked amazing - all of the chicken was white meat. I did try the rice and it was phenomenal with all of the spices, little pieces of chorizo, and beans in it. The empanadas were really oily. There was some special where if you buy two empanadas, you get a free soda. The stuffed peppers with rice, beef, beans, and beef were good, but the cheese was the really orange, kind of cheap type. One stuffed pepper is like a meal in and of itself. They have flan for dessert but it's not made with horchata...thumbs down! Too bad Salsa doesn't have its liquor license yet. I'm very surprised by the three star rating of this amazing place! I've only gotten taken but everytime I'm there, I see people dining in and the take out portions seem much larger. I always order the same thing: 1/4 rotisserie chicken, rice and gandules and tostones. The tostones and mojo are ON POINT! I always ask for extra sauce because one little container does not cover the huge portion of 15-18 tostones. And this is just a side! The rice and gandules is totally delicious too. Perfectly spiced and never dry. The give you a container that is easily three portions. I ALWAYS have leftovers for the next day's lunch. The 1/4 chicken is white meat rotisserie chicken. Usually pretty moist, but definitely dry sometimes. I usually just have bbq sauce handy. And I never reheat it because it really dries out. For $8 I have an amazing, flavorful, hot dinner with enough left over for lunch! Can't beat $4 per meal! read more

The gentleman who took my order over the phone was really patient and helped me place my order for two, since I didn't have a menu and couldn't remember which sides we liked. When we got home and ate, we were floored by how delicious everything was. The food was GREAT. We ordered pernil, black beans, white rice, cinnamon baked yams, garlic corn & sweet plaintains. I had absolutely no expectations. I used to bring home Latin food from Queens that was very good, but this was better. I called the next day to tell them how good the food was and how happy I was to find a great Latin place so close to home. Oh, and the prices are very reasonable. This is the first "Latin(o) Eatery" I have found around my house, and while it isn't the best, it is not terrible either. I've had the rice with black beans, and the pernil. The pernil is not really what I'm accustomed to, it seems more like shredded pork, (while they might be similiar, it is absolutely not the same). However, the black beans, are really good! While it doesn't have the actual pieces of smoked ham, it does have the taste, and this is how my grandmother makes them, so it reminds me of her. The prices seem ($4.00 for a small order of beans, $8.00 for a pound of pernil) a little too expensive for the place though, but they are the only one in the area so I guess they are able to get away with it for now. Exceeded expectations. You get a lot of food for a little $ and it tastes great. I had the pork with tostones and rice with caludones. Never write reviews. Downloaded the app just to write this one. The absolute WORSE Puerto Rican food I've ever had. Ordered Mofongo (which I had to wait 30 mins for) with shrimp, it's suppose to have a garlic sauce with it but instead had a butter sauce, something you would eat seafood with, making it super salty. The shrimp were tiny shrimp that you get in low budget Chinese food. I make better Mofongo and I have no Latin blood running through me. The alcapurria was greasy on the outside and the meat was dry on the inside. The chicken was tiny unseasoned pieces that looked like it was boiled, not roasted. The pastelon looked like a McDonalds burger with a melted slice of packaged cheese on top. Only thing edible was the white rice and black beans. Everything else went in the trash. Complete waste of $40. So sad that this is the areas only representation of an otherwise delicious cuisine. Do NOT go here if you've never had Puerto Rican food before. Had this for lunch the other day and it was very good. I ordered the churrasco and you get two sides of your choice I got the rice and beans. I like to keep it authentic as possible and they give you a good amount. The meat had great flavor and the chimichurri sauce is good as well. Their empanadas are good too not a fan of the chicken but the beef ones are good haven't tried the cheese one yet but I will next time because I'll definitely go back. The food was spot on and travelled really well (had a 15 min drive from JV to Ossining). The pernil was cooked absolutely perfectly - like XMas dinner in August - as were the the arroz con gondules, the Empanadas, yuca, tostones - all of it was delicious. But the pasteles - I know how hard it is to make pasteles. It's so difficult to get it right. Izla absolutely nailed them! Perfect consistency, not liquidy.... This review is for their Fishkill Restaurant. One star! Why? I have 50 years experience eating Puerto Rican food, in the states and in Puerto Rico. Nothing that my friend (a Latina) and I ate at Izla tasted anything like "real" Puerto Rican food. We had Arroz con Pollo, Pernil, Arroz con gandules, plantain maduros, Tostones, frijoles negros (black beans), and Yuca con mojo. The Arroz con Pollo was made with chunks of white meat chicken - no chicken on the bone, no dark meat at all. No olives. No flavor! Nada! In all my years I never had Arroz con pollo without chicken on the bone and some olives or capers. The Pernil was dry, not a hint of garlic or oregano or any other spice for that matter. Tasteless. The Arroz con gandules was passable, barely. The Tostones were ok as was the Plantain maduros. The Yuca was terrible! The black beans had no flavor either. If you are unfamiliar with Puerto Rican food and you want to try it, this is not the place. If you are familiar with the food and have dreamt of having it somewhere in the in the Hudson Valley, this is not the place. read more

Walked in and ordered the largest portions of premade carnitas and pernil for takeout from the hot food trays at the counter. When I opened the order at home, I was confused as there seemed to be very small amounts of each. I weighed each of the dishes (on my kitchen scale) and realized I had received less than half of the amount for which I had paid. Called them and was told it wasn't a mistake...the weight was determined prior to cooking!! So basically, they were charging about $48 per pound for the cooked pork. It was tasty but, not worth the price. Never went back. Thanks anyway. read more
