I drive by here all of the time and haven't tried it mostly because of reviews. While I didn't give this place 5 stars, it was very close. The service was prompt, friendly, and helpful. They have two different salsas, one regular and one spicy. While the spicy isn't really spicy it does give more of a kick than the other one. Either way, both salsas were very fresh. I ordered the two enchiladas with chicken and the tamal. The chicken was very well seasoned and the tamal was one of the best I've had. The beans were very good and the rice had very good flavor, it was slightly dry though. The restaurant seemed pretty clean and it had some nice murals on the wall. Delicious Mexican food and drinks! Their burritos, enchiladas, and chips + salsa have always been great. I tried one of their drinks once (a strawberry margarita I think) and it was super yummy. They definitely get bonus points for having free chips and salsa!! The servers have always been friendly, and the food usually comes out pretty fast, even when the restaurant is busy. read more

On our way for a quick beach getaway. Found this restaurant in Scapoose . Good reviews and we were there early for lunch so thought we could get a quick bite and be on our way. We arrived at 11:45 AM. We are finally back in our car and it is 12:50. Eventually, the waiter came to take our order. We had to flag him down. We ordered a fajita to share and a side of guacamole for before the meal arrived. No breakfast for us so we were hungry The guacamole did not arrive so we asked again. It was really good, the chips were crispy and not greasy. We really liked their salsa. The fajitas arrived in stages. Veggies, tortillas, rice, beans and chicken were all really good. The pork was tough. First time at a Mexican restaurant for me. In summary, people are nice but seemed a bit disorganized. Besides the person that promptly seated us, at least three other people came to our table. May be just a fluke that our service was slow. The food was mostly really good. read more

Losing hope in this restaurant. I placed an order to go and they ordered the wrong thing for me, so after I got home, I realized my order was missing an entree! Called and they said, "Oh, well we didn't charge you for it." That does not make me feel better. I have had major problems before ordering their tacos to go. I won't ever do that again. They are inedible because the shells turn the mush. Well, I thought I would get around that issue by ordering the super nachos with chicken this time. BAD IDEA!!! They seriously need to learn how to make food to go. The chips, cheese, chicken, and refried beans were put in an aluminum to go container, baked, and when I opened it, it was one big baked chunk. Well, the exposed chips on top were burned and the chips underneath had turned to pudding. Completely unable to eat it! Then, I got a "side" of guacamole, sour cream, onions, and tomato. Ordered lunch to go, which was just soup and a kids quesadilla. 50 minutes later the hostess tells me laughing, they havent started it yet. ​I tell her Inordered almost an hour ago, she just laughs and says I know. Told her I needed to get home as my lunch was over and requested a refund. Again she laughs and says no she won't issue refund. Claims manager out of the country and no one else I can talk to. We have eaten here over 100 times in the last 18 years and it has alway been a pretty good experience, the food is pretty good, the service always acceptable and the prices reasonable. This time not so much, I think they had a large group in the bar and were extra busy. We were seated quickly and got water and chips with salsa right away, then we sat for over 15 minutes and nothing! No one came near out table. Finally the big guy with the skull cap stopped and took our order, 2 meals and a Pina Colada and Strawberry Margarita on the rocks. The food was delivered and no drinks, a bus boy stopped and asked if we needed anything else and we told him that we wanted out drinks about 5 minutes later the big guy brought the drinks and left right away. The margarita was blended so I waived down a server and asked him to fix it. The big guy came back in a little while with another drink. This time out was a blackberry not strawberry and it tasted terrible so it was not drunk. I asked another server for out bill and showed him the untouched drink and asked hime to take it of the bill. But it was still on the bill so when I went to pay I asked the big guy in the hat to take it off the bill and he wouldn't, he got mad and said he made it twice and I told him it was wrong twice and if anyone had checked our table they would know that it had not been drunk. He got angry and blamed us for it and I just paid the bill and left. Not sure if we will every be back. read more

The worse service and food I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. The chili con queso was just melted cheese with a pile of grease on top with 3 green peppers and 3 black olives swimming in it. Oh there were a few raw white onions begging for a slow death on top as well. And trying to get anyone to speak to was almost impossible. Stay away. Stay far away. The servers are usually friendly and smiling, and the food is very fast. The atmosphere is pleasant, and the wall to wall murals are interesting to look at, at least. The food itself is pretty much just OK. Typical Mexican American food that you find at most mid-level Mexican places here in Oregon. I wish the food were a bit better. The beans and rice are the same exact flavor as 4 or 5 other places within a 15 mile radius. I usually get something with shredded chicken, and the chicken tastes that same as any other Mexican joint, no better or worse. Don't let our negativity influence you because this was our first time. But... This place was bland and the service was slow... but... I still kinda liked it! Ish... The chips were bland (the salsa was really salty, though, so I kinda didn't mind that since the chips needed something), the four different dishes we ordered had issues (explained below) but overall everything was edible and we didn't go home hungry because the portions were good! First off, it took 10 minutes for our waiter to come back and take our order, but he was cute and really so... you know, that made it ok ;). And I could get a pint of Modelo for $3.25 which was great! (Serious bonus points for that!!) I personally liked my food - the flautas combo - even though it was super hard to chew through the deep fried corn tortilla. But it didn't taste bland to me at all (note: I was the only one drinking and I have the only positive review from our group- interesting!). However, the other three adults in our group thought all the food was bland or tasted exactly the same. For example: the burrito tasted exactly like the enchilada. My husband complained that the relleno tasted like an egg. Period. And the chipotle sour cream was literally just chipotles blended with sour cream- no other intricacy of flavor like salt or seasoning. What was it that we were missing? What would have changed everything for us? I asked my family this and the each had the following to say: *It wasn't fresh or flavorful *It didn't seem fresh *The beans were milky *it just didn't feel like Mexico to me. You can see why they aren't "Yelpers" as their words are few. But they were abundantly redundant with their limited vocabulary on the subject while in the car on the way home. Side note: the employees were Hispanics, but there weren't any Hispanics dining here tonight so ... not sure if that is a sign of their food or a sign of the area. Not sure.... WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!! From the minute we walked in, we were treated rudely. Jose seated us without saying a word to us the whole time. The waitress, Isabelle, was just as rude & unpleasent. We sat & waited for someone to let us know it would be a minute or say something to us, nothing. They dropped off chips & salsa with attitude, still said not one word. We were about to get up & leave when Jesus, our waiter, appeared out of nowhere with a smile & an urgency & was completely opposite of those first 2 who should greet customers who walk in or at least be able to bs us if anything. Average Americanized Mexican food. Colorful inside of the restaurant with bright colors but regular Booth seating in the restaurant. They have additional seating with tables and chairs in the bar that allows Children and Families. I am one that prefers to sit in the bar because it is usually quieter and with no children. But that is not the case in this place. Prices are decent compared to other average family style Mexican restaurants. And the food is beans rice meat veggies and tortilla chips We were seated immediately. But the waiter didn't show up for quite some time . There were a lot of workers ... we were not paid attention to once we got chips and salsa from the nice young man. I went to the bar to get a drink and nobody could serve me because there was nobody behind the bar. They were all out working the tables I guess. Which is fine it's understandable. Once I finally got a drink made, they would not let me pay for it because the bar register was not working or it was turned off or closed, I'm not really sure. But after all of that time and getting my drink I went back to the table and the waiter was finally there. The rest of the food and service was average good and pleasant. read more

I'm grading on a heavy curve here because it is Scappoose, after all, and I'm not sure how "authentic" other folks expect the place to be. For what it is - that is, an Americanized Mexican restaurant in a small town - it's pretty damned great. Service is fast and friendly, chips & salsa are tasty enough, and the lounge has enough seating to accommodate large groups. The food is the standard fare you'd find in any establishment of its kind across middle America; basically, comfort food with Mexican flair. I tend toward the same dish, the Grande Enchilada, and it comes stuffed with meat, smothered in cheese, and piled high with lettuce, tomato, sour cream & guacamole. What more could you ask for? A cursory glance at the other reviews for this place revealed half-hearted, tepid little endorsements like: "Probably the best restaurant in Scappoose." Wrong-o! This isn't even the best Mexi-joint in Scappoose---- that distinction clearly belongs to Burrito USA---formerly Super Burrito Express. USA's wares are consistently cheaper, bigger, and more quickly delivered. It's true, Ixtapa is far preferable for the dine -in experience; Burrito USA wasn't built with consideration for a cozy, leisurely, lasting dine-in experience. It's eat and run, or better yet, carry out ("para llevar") all the way. Ixtapa has a full-service bar, and so it becomes a little easier to understand why there may be a built in home-town bias for this place. What can I say? I like some Mexican beer (especially Dos XX amber), and I like various mixed drinks, but the super-big-gulp slurpee-fied version most middle Americans take for a margarita? I'll pass?
