I'm having pregnancy cravings and I ordered "Tostadas" which is a regular taco but w crispy tortillas. My boyfriend was there before the food was ready and we don't live too far, they stacked the tostadas in a container so sloppy that by the time I got my food , the tortilla was soggy and falling apart where I couldn't even grab it if I wanted too. I called for an exchange or refund and was told that I should've read the menu better or asked for everything to be packed separately. read more

This authentic Mexican restaurant is set right in the heart of south Scranton. This barrio is pretty quaint. And the place oozes with cultural pride. We were immediately seated by a friendly hostess. Our server explained to my friend various regional dishes on the menu. Chips and fresh salsa arrived momentarily with two Coronas. Even though I love hot/spicy, it was good to know that the sauce was not served picante. My friend had the beef Fajitas, w/rice & beans. It was great-tasting. I had the mole poblano. It, too, was super, possibly the best I have ever eaten. The mole sauce was a very chocolatey but not overly sweet. If you go here you have to try a dish with this sauce. I was visiting my grandparents in Scranton Pennsylvania and stumbled along the small little homestyle restaurant of Ítalo. As we walked inside we were met by a nice waiter who Immediately sat us and got us water and drinks while the dining area was almost full. I decided to go with the steak quesadilla which was absolutely scrumptious, the only critique I observed is the steak didn't have much seasoning, or was maybe just lower quality, but no biggie. After I finished my meal the waiter who i assume was the mother of the homestyle restaurant came over and gave me a high five as I was the only one to completely finish my meal , but she did end up giving everyone else participation high fives which somewhat defeated the purpose and will most likely lead to a drop in stars if it happens again. This was my first time eating here (placed a to go order). I ordered the steak burrito and was told it would be ready in about 15 minutes (and it was!). It's not a very big place, but there are tables to eat at as well as a nice bar. The burrito is huge and lasted me two days. It's filled with rice (a ton of rice) and steak topped with a little bit of sour cream and with lettuce and tomato on the side. Prices are reasonable. The flavor was pretty good, but I thought it was a bit dry. I would of liked it better if it had a cheese sauce and pico de gallo on top. Might try something else next time, but will definitely be back. read more

Came here for lunch today. Great selection of all kinds of different dishes. They are willing to make any Mexican dish without meat and double up on peppers and onions. The chips and salsa were good. Drinks came out promptly. Unfortunately my enchiladas suizas tasted like a container of salt got dumped on it, and my husbands fajitas that we specified could not have shrimp since he's very allergic to them, came with shrimp. The steak was over cooked in the fajitas as well. The wait staff was very pleasant and friendly though. We likely won't be back since the food wasn't what we had hoped. The waitress definitely wrote down our orders correctly, as we watched her do so. Italo's is a family-run corner restaurant serving up great Mexican food and drinks. The family is super friendly and they make great food. Buyer beware: the portions are more than generous! The burritos are easily two or three meals for most people:) The do attract a lot of business, so be prepared for a full restaurant. Everyone here hustles though, so you will not wait long. Italo's Mexican Restaurant located close to downtown Scranton is family owned and operated offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have been in business for 14 months and serve mainly Mexican, but also offers cheese steaks, soups and salads, hamburgers and gyros, yes gyros! The dinning area includes around 15 tables and a huge beautiful bar, but they don't have a liquor license. Feel free to BYOB. The waitress was very friendly and offer dining suggestion after finding out we had a vegetarian onboard. She offered to put our Modello's on ice and then suggest an Eggplant Enchiladas Plate which was not on the menu and I went with the Enchiladas De Mole Poblano Plate. The order was place and minutes later she brought out the chips and salsa. The chips were hot and super thin and the salsa was finely chopped and had a bit of a bite, Both were homemade and good! At this point, I asked for some guacamole and she was happy to oblige. The guacamole is made to order and took a couple of minutes. It was also yummy. After speaking to the owner's son for several minutes and finishing my second beer, the two plates were served. Both looked fabulous and came with rice and beans. I dug into the mole, OMG! Smooth, creamy and sweet! I tried the eggplant and was quit impressed with the flavor. The rice and beans were pretty standard, but think the beans may have been made with lard and not fit for any vegetarian, I enjoyed them and she eat around them. We didn't ask? Fulfilled once again it was time to seek the after dinner sweet. I asked about the Flan, but the waitress suggested El Beso De Italos (Photo attached) and glad she did. Bananas cooked in brandy with ice cream and whipped cream on top. Muy Bueno! Our whole dining experience was relaxing, tasty and enjoyable. I would highly recommend. Hands down the best Mexican restaurant in Scranton. It has a mix of authentic Mexican food and Tex-Mex. If you eat in, the salsa (served with chips) is amazing! If you like guacamole, order it (can also be made spicy); it's creamy and delicious. I haven't had anything here that isn't great, but my favorites are: huarache ranchero, gorditas, sopes, wet burrito, the regular torta, and the chimichanga. If you like spicy, I definitely recommend getting it hot (the restaurant serves green sauce and RARELY has red). I always order the chicken, but I've heard the other meats are great too. Best part about the place is it's cheap and the portions are HUGE! The owners are also some of the sweetest people you'll ever meet. Sampled the products after years of driving past and reading reviews. Unfortunately, Italo's did not meet the expectations I had. Of the different tacos brought home (steak, chicken, al pastor), all lacked seasoning. The meat, except for the al pastor version, looked like it was boiled. For the price and the time waiting, I would have expected more. The quesadilla purchased was a total waste of money. Same bland meat with just melted cheese added. Thick and hefty, I suppose, but flavorless and expensive. As I wrote this review, I actually reduce my rating further (from three to two stars) simply because I have realized more that this restaurant may have a solid following, maybe for the burrito, but for a decent meal at the right price Italo's is not. I would recommend Garibaldi's or Chicano's for your next Mexican meal. Cheers! read more

I've mostly been disappointed by Mexican restaurants in the Scranton area and I think I've been to all of them except Taqueria Oaxaca along Cedar and Taco Bandito in N Main Ave. I've been to Italo's only once-- and asked the waitress for their best dish. She recommended the Enchilada de Mole Poblano and it was among the best mole I've ever tasted. Not the watery, overly sweet mole that you find in some other places in the area, this version was as good as any I've had. Italo's is a hidden gem! We wanted to try a new Mexican restaurant and remembered hearing about Italo's (former location of Tom & Jerry's).. I was amazed at the menu selection! It contained lots of Mexican and non Mexican offerings.. The burgers looked fantastic! They were also gigantic! They must be really good, we saw several headed to different tables. The portions are generous.. The prices are better than some local food trucks selling sub-par overpriced tacos.. They even have the elusive hamburger taco for those stubborn kids who think tacos are supposed to only have ground beef. My order came with four tacos.. I barely finished two! I needed to save room for the rice and beans.. Wifey had her usual.. Chicken quesadillas.. She loved them! Everything was delish!! Service is friendly.. The place is spotless! We will definitely be back!!!! The only negatives I could find.. Parking.. No lot, and things are tight in that area.. If you enjoy dry, flavorless food this is the place for you! Ordered a burrito and first of all the menu online says it comes with beans, tomatoes, lettuce and a slice of avocado. NOPE. It was literally rice and dry, boiled chicken. When I called to complain they said the beans are mashed up in the rice...EW. I didn't realize I ordered baby food. Took it back and she showed me their paper menu which lists it having "beans", rice, peppers and onions. MINE DIDN'T HAVE THAT EITHER. What it is supposed to have I'll never know but what I do know is that the chicken is tasteless, and boiled to DEATH. Don't waste your money.
