This place looks good, let's go there. Well, the map directions don't work... sort of. It put us near it, but, it is in the mall. That info would have really helped. Genuinely blown away by how good this burger was. It felt even more unexpected because of its appearance--a random corner stall in a quiet, rundown mall. The it char burger I got came freshly made, which meant I had to wait 10 minutes, but it was worth it. Juicy patties, perfectly melty cheese, soft bun. I think it might the best burger I've had in the Lower Mainland. No seating, just some tables around the mall, but at $13 for this hefty burger, I can't complain about anything else! Wasn't sure what to expect. I think the owners are Korean. The mom is friendly and chatty. I had the spicy IT Char burger with garlic fries ($2 extra). The burger was solid but wasn't spicy at all. I think they simply forgot. Pretty solid burger. The garlic fries are sprinkled with parmesan and I think bits of butter. Came with this tasty (garlic?) yellow dip. This is still the place I go to when I have a craving for a good burger. I have found my favorite burger here -- Spicy BBQ. It comes with caramelized onions and serrano pepper. I usually get the combo as I love the fries -- crispy to the end. As usual, prices have also gone up but not as high as other places, so this is still relatively affordable at around $11-12 for a combo. Another item I like from here is the bulgogi beef rice. I usually get this to go. I like how they pack it with foil inside the box. It helps to retain the heat and keep the juices in. The portion is huge and it can make 2 meals for me if I am not super hungry. The owners (a couple) are also very friendly and I have seen them bring the food out to some elderly customers who may have difficulty walking over to pick up the food when ready. I've seen It Char Burger pop-up on my Yelp search for burgers -- it has always piqued my curiosity and I've always wanted to try it but haven't found the time to drive to New West. Luckily, I wanted to buy some things at Sally Beauty and upon entering the parking lot, I saw a sign for It Char and it dawned on me that this was in the same complex! Yay! They were about to close for the day and I'm glad that they still took my to-go order: BBQ burger, cheeseburger and fries. The owners(?) were really nice and accommodating and my order came out promptly. Prices were really great! It was less than $17 for two burgers, fries and a pop. Seating is available inside the strip mall too if you plan to eat your burgers there. Hubby and I had half of each burger so we can try both flavours. The BBQ burger was simple but yummy-- burger patty topped with caramelized onions, bbq sauce and mayo. I was glad it wasn't an overpowering bbq sauce. The cheeseburger had that nostalgic cheeseburger feeling and it tasted delicious! The fries were good too, chunky fries that's crispy outside and soft potato inside -- a bit greasy though. Just finished my exam and my boyfriend took me here to celebrate. I always wanted to try this place but somehow only remember to suggest it on Sundays which is the only day they are closed. So this Thursday afternoon we decided today's the day. I ordered their IT char burger which comes with fries. The burger itself comes with double patties, tomatoes, lettuce, red onion, bacon, cheese, and caramelized onion. The burger was well seasoned and was delicious, much better than any burger joint in the lower mainland and you know they made everything to order because it was fresh. My favorite part though was their fries. Those were the best fries I've ever had. Double fried, well seasoned, and plentiful. I am hooked. $12.49 for the combo. My boyfriend got the double spicy Korean burger which came with 2 patties, lettuce and spicy Korean sauce he said the burger was really good too, a good basic burger with what I can only assume gochujang based sauce. $7.49 His burger didn't come with fries so he ordered a medium order of fries for $5.99, again he loved the fries too. Overall, this place trumps a lot of other burger joints. The menu is simple, freshly made, and well seasoned throughout and I think you get quite a bit for the price. Well, I've read it numerous times and I finally get to exclaim, IT Char Burger is amaaazing! Picked up take away for the fam, 3 hot dogs, one cheese burger combo and one IT Char burger for the hubs. My cheese burger was exactly the right amount of charred burger patty, fixings and oh man, the fries were as tasty as chips from a London chip shop after a big night out. Mowed! We go to IT for take-out fish'n'chips & share the single serving: Two pieces of paddy-sized Cod in a light batter & deep-fried to perfection. The home fries are also nice and crispy & lightly salted, yet I've seen people complain coz they aren't all uniform size like McDs. Sadly, no coleslaw. Plastic fork and Kraft tartar sauce pkg. Corrugated paper container keeps it hot enough til we get home. $15. The burgers are good & freshly made. Pop and coffee for drinks. Our order takes about 15 minutes & the counter Lady is always sweet. It's in a mall setting with several tables, so not a romantic date place. Plenty of free parking in the Safeway/BCLB store lot. Finally made it to It Char! Since I don't live in the area I had to wait until I was doing a Sally's Beauty Supply run to come here. It did not disappoint! Had the signature It Char burger, wow it was very filling with two patty's. The fries are homemade and taste amazing. Next time I will try another smaller burger so I can upgrade to garlic fries. I tried to upgrade my It Char burger with garlic fries but she suggested I go with another burger instead but since it was my first time visiting I had to try their signature, still not upset the regular fries are great. Nice lil family run burger joint in Royal Square Mall at McBride & 8th Ave. I am discovering all these little gems in New West as I recently started working there. My friend said they have the best garlic fries but my favourite is the cheeseburger. You can tell it's hand-formed made fresh. The garlic Parmesan fries were sooo deadly, yum! They give you a generous portion. I couldn't even eat them all but my boyfriend was happy for the leftovers. Next time I go back I think I'll order two burgers LOL read more

We decided to try the It Char burger and Double Spicy BBQ burger. They were both so good! The patties were nice, juicy, and flavourful and everything tasted very fresh. The patties are kind of little so I appreciate that you can double your patty for a minimal extra cost. I honestly liked the Spicy BBQ better than the It Char! Maybe because it was simple, and to the point. The serrano bbq sauce was just so delicious with this kind of burger and went well with the caramelized onions. Special shout out to the fries too, didn't expect much from them but they were delicious as well! Crispy and tasty, definitely satisfying. The complex that this place is in was unnervingly quiet and empty at 3PM on a Monday, so it was kind of awkward to sit there and eat in that environment but this is definitely not the fault of the business, just a warning. Value-wise, this is definitely a great burger. I wouldn't consider it the best burger I've ever had, but it definitely is for this price range. It was greasy enough to satisfy the craving but not so greasy that I felt sick all day afterwards. Well I finally hit this place after seeing the reviews and noting its location close to me. Well lets just say this. The Burgers are pretty much what you would find in some gourmet burger place but for half the price. Its located in a dead strip mall in New West but its the king of the hill. We Ordered the IT Char and my son the double Teriyaki. Wonderfully flame grilled burgers, as others have already commented. And fries are also better quality than some of the standard plain fries others serve. Crispy and light. We also ordered a Poutine which was nothing out of the ordinary but again the fries are good quality. Service is good. Its like a food court type establishment so no table service. There are not that many tables so beware. Again for the price its amazing. Will definitely be back when burger craving hits. read more

It Char Burger has a small menu...but lots of big flavor, and to be honest, one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. Great burgers and humble owner. Tried this place a few months ago for a take out for me and my wife. The owner told me that I should try eating in so the toasted buns don't get soggy. The burgers were still very good and my wife agreed. Today we decided to try eating in. The owner was right - Fresh veggie toppings, soft but nicely toasted buns, charbroiled patties that are truly beefy (not rubbery like those fast food joints). Fries are cut and fried in-house and they are super crispy. This is a unique place that serves classic burger that is neither like fast food joints nor like those fancy so-called burger high end restaurants. If you want a classic grilled burger made with care, you should try this place. In New Westminster this morning for medical appointments at the hospital, and had time to kill between tests, so headed over to Royal Square Mall to check out the burgers at IT Char Burger. We (as a threesome) arrived at the Mall about 9:30 am. The 'restaurant' (food-court stall) is located inside and way at the very back of the Mall -- we parked near the Mall's main entrance, and entered there. Note: if you wish to skip the walk inside the Mall, the restaurant itself is most-easily/readily accessible via a side entrance to the Mall located right by the entrance to Safeway. I asked the owner/cook if it was too early to order burgers - "No, I can make you burgers." - was his reply, and what we wanted to hear. So we were good to go! At this still rather early time of day, their signature burger (IT char burger) looked way too big for the time, and our appetites, so with a helpful recommendation from the owner, we opted for smaller single meat patty burgers, and ordered three cheeseburgers, but via the lunch 'combo' (i.e., with fries & drink), so that we could also taste what was anticipated to be some great fries. Our food came out of the kitchen totally made-to-order. The burgers well-made - buns toasted, the inside ingredients plentiful, fresh, tasty, and juicy -- definitely requiring a couple of napkins to fully-enjoy!! The fries were great, and all they have been cracked up to be -- lightly-battered and seasoned, and cooked perfectly. It was a fun dining experience. Food-court burgers and fries for breakfast, certainly far from our usual fare to start the day, but for today, a rather nice, tasty, and much-enjoyed treat. If you've never heard of an IT Char Burger before, it's probably because you can only find it at a tiny hole-in-the-wall burger/cafe/Indian/Asian food outlet in a nondescript mini mall located in New Westminster. The next time you're around Royal Square Mall on McBride and Eight Ave, head into the little shopping mall and grab a burger from IT Char. Their signature IT Char Burger with Fries comes in for under $10 with fries. I added a side of gravy and have to admit that it was pretty awesome. The burger comes with two chargrilled patties topped with caramelized onions, bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato. Everything is made to order and the fries had the perfect balance of crispy exterior and soft interior that paired perfectly with the thick, rich gravy. Yup, it doesn't get much better than this. There's not really a food court in this mini mall... but they do have some tables that you can sit at to enjoy your meal. This place also serves up western-style breakfast options, butter chicken, as well as some Asian dishes... but I always come back for their burgers. I finally decided one day to try one of their other burgers... the Double Spicy BBQ with fries and drink for under $10. It's fairly similar to the IT Char Burger in that it comes with caramelized onions and double patties. Where it departs is that it's topped with thick-cut jalapeño slices as well as a sweet bbq sauce. This time around, I didn't order the side of gravy and I was kicking myself because it really sends the fries over the top. The jalapeño slices didn't actually give this burger much heat but the burger was quite messy to eat with the mix of sweet caramelized onions and bbq sauce. Small independentally owned burger joints are fast disappearing in the Lower Mainland and when Burger Burger in New Westminster closed, I was at a loss. Then, through Yelp, I found IT Char Burger. Actually, the charred burger at IT is better. I ordered a double spicy bbq burger with mushrooms and tomatoes/lettuce. It was spicy, messy and so delicious. The mushrooms were sliced fresh and were grilled perfectly. The burger, including the extras came in under $10 and I was in burger heaven. Be forewarned though. The spicy burger has a kick to it due to the jalapeno peppers in it. So, if you can't take the heat, go with the IT burger. It's located inside a 70's style strip mall which actually had nice wooden beam supports and a cool carved indigenous sculpture in the centre. IT burger was the only food option inside, while there are a few food options outside. The place was busy with locals and the nice couple operating it were working at breakneck speed. I heard they have great wedge cut fries, but they'll have to wait until my next visit as I knew I wouldn't have finished them on my own. The only downside? I'm actually going to head back for some of their Korean fare, since I think the owners/operators are Korean and let's face it, some bulgogi is as delectable as a burger for lunch most days. Thanks to everyone else talking about this hidden gem, we popped over to share an IT Char Burger for lunch today and did not disappoint. Not only did you get the fresh food (all things made when you order, not a minute before),, but our hostess was delightful - super sweet and even brought our food to us (totally unnecessary in a food court!) The burger itself had that delicious charred flavour, the bacon was crispy and flavourful, and I really liked how the pickles were diced. As others mentioned, this is one messy burger and an extra napkin or two would have helped, but we made do. The fries are lightly battered, and almost wedge like. It's thanks to that batter that DH got his "potato-y" fries, and I got my "crunchers." In the end, we were both very happy with our 10 dollar burger and fries. More so than had we gone to the aforementioned fast food spots, since some how, the fresh made food makes you feel a lot less guilty. read more

Most people are here to stock up on booze at the BC Liquor, or to get their nails did at the nail salon. It's truly a pity, because this burger joint deserves a much wider audience than what it currently has. The fries here are not really fries at all, but rather, potato wedges... The garlic fries are a generous portion of wedges smothered in cheese and served with house lemon aioli - need I say more?? If you're feeling like an indulgent east-meets-west dish, ask for the butter chicken fries; the butter chicken is rich, creamy, and mild in terms of spiciness... And really, where else can you get this pairing in New West? Consider it a spiritual cousin to the specialty poutines at the Spud Shack in the New West station. On to the burgers... Juicy, fresh, and a homemade taste to them - I guess the best way to describe them would be to compare them to the burgers at the sadly defunct other burger dive in town, Burger Burger (RIP, Burger Burger, I miss you already!!). Nothing fancy or pretentious about it, just a solid, satisfying burger. Sure, the patty isn't huge, but get a double burger, and problem solved! As mentioned by other reviewers, menu items are affordably priced. Burgers for as cheap as $3, and full combos under $6... I often get greedy and order the butter chicken fries AND a mushroom burger, which adds up to about $11. OK sure, it's inconveniently nestled away from the rest of the New West dining scene, and in a desolate food court, no less; but for me personally, that just adds to its underdog vibe and makes me want to get behind it even more. I had read some very favorable reviews in the past and one day I just happened to be in the neighborhood. So I decided to pick up their ITBurger for a friend (I'm a vegetarian) A couple of things struck me. The owners or operators were not friendly AT ALL. Both male and female working at the joint. Exuded an attitude that they were doing one a favor by being there; conducting a business of their own reckoning. Secondly, my friend didn't think the burger with fries and coke was worth the cost. Probably cost wise equivalent to a restaurant-served meal. Actually, the fries got eaten but 1/4 of the burger ended up in the waste bin. Way better than Burger Heaven (which is very good too) at better prices. Loved the fries, so tasty! Very friendly service and the food is made to order so it's super fresh. If you DON'T like good food, or just need something to stuff your gob while racing around like a madman in your vehicle, I suggest the corporate chain burger offered on the other side of the street from this place. If you DO like freshly made burgers, fries and other goodies, then this place is a great alternative. I will be coming back here often when I want to eat something real and with real flavour, made by people who know and care about what they're making. My choice is that simple. :-) read more

The other day I went for a walk and ended up here. It was not my first time, but once I got the craving for one of their burgers, it wouldn't let go. And even when I got to the stand, where the kindly man who runs the place informed me that they wouldn't be taking any orders for half an hour, I couldn't give up. Usually I only brave this depressing mini-mall to get to an inadequately stocked but convenient BC Liquor Store. I took a walk around and discovered there's a really delightful washroom on the second floor, however. A short time later, shorter than expected, I returned to It Char and they were taking orders again! I got a cheeseburger, waited a few minutes and took then took my lunch into the sunshine, and all was right again. Crispy bun, smoky flavoured patty, fresh crisp lettuce and tomatoes. This is the best burger in New West, bar none. Take it to go if you can manage not to eat it all by the time you get to the park. read more

Like other reviewers have said, their burgers are amazing!! Tried the it char burger add mushrooms no relish or onions and I think it was one of the best burgers I've had in a while. Juicy, double patty, insides don't slide around or off the burger as you're eating it. Didn't realize it came with fries so we had also ordered a beef bulgogi to share. Bulgogi was average- I've had better elsewhere but it's good value for your money. Fries were wedge style, decently crispy. 1 star removed because the owner was the only one working that day and we had to wait a while for food.
