Crappy experience at the ice cream counter. Noticed my scoop was about to fall off the cone, I could see air underneath. Asked the girl to try to pack it into the cone a bit better and she went to give me another scoop. Which I thought was pretty generous, since my main concern was the ice cream falling off, not the amount. Then she upcharged me without telling me. Thought about what had happened for a minute, then brought the uneaten ice cream back and asked for a refund. The staff tried to tell me that they couldn't give me a refund because their manager had already gone home for the night (at 8pm) and none of them were authorized to do refunds. I told them I was just gonna stand there and stare at them until they figured something out, so one of them went to get the manager from the restaurant side who was apologetic and gave me the refund. Didn't take the ice cream; I think the server thought I was trying to scam more, and I didn't want to validate that suspicion. The ice cream there is pretty good, but you gotta tell people what you are gonna charge them. I don't usually base reviews on service. I don't expect servers to be in a good mood all the time, that's not realistic. but secret upcharging crosses a line for me. read more

There is something special when a place can make breakfast different. I have made it a tradition to stop here at least once on every trip I make. The panko eggs are so unique and crazy delicious. I love the homemade sausage patties but usually I find the bacon a little too crispy. The french toast might be the secret star here for breakfast. The portion is giant and it is one of the best I have ever had. It can be expensive and crowded but it is still work it. read more

Here's how it went: Me: "Iced coffee please" IC: "our ice coffee machine is broken..." Me: "ok, hot coffee please" IC: "ok"...10 minutes later deliver a hot coffee with rainbow bubbles because there is still dish detergent residue...I walk it back to the kitchen because our server is nowhere to be found, and then get looks from the people behind the bar, as they smell other coffee cups to see if they have the residue. 5 minutes later to our group of 4 kids IC: "can we bring over the one waffle now before the rest of the food?" Me: "prefer not to as that's gonna make the table of kids erupt when only one food item comes" IC: "well the waffle will get cold because it's cooked in a different kitchen" Me: ....."ok bring it out then" !¡!table of children erupts as the waffle comes out and none of the other food is there!¡! We ate breakfast here multiple times in June and have come in July as well but service is spotty and we got three out of four meals today. After asking multiple employees and going inside to the kitchen we finally got the 4th meal. I think the place needs adult supervision. We regret ordering ice cream at the Island Kitchen. This was really the only option after dinner. The restaurant offered cheesecake and that was it. BUT, conveniently, you can stop next door (owned by the Island Kitchen) and order VERY (I mean VERY!) expensive ice cream. Two 3-scoop cups cost $30.35!!! Outrageous!!! And, the owners discretely (aka hide) a 20% tip for their young servers. The exorbitant tip shows up on the receipt but is not added to the total so you think it's not extra. SO sneaky. Marvelous Malcom made the meal an amazing experience. His southern charm on Nantucket Island was matched by the northern cuisine! Now to the food... Portuguese muffins, who knew.. never heard of them but I'm on a search to deplete the island of them and bring them back to Lighthouse Point! My friend and I came to Island Kitchen while one of our other friends had breakfast with some old classmates at Downyflake. Everything was pretty good; there was only one other guy there at 8:00 a.m. with us so service was pretty quick. I got the 2 eggs breakfast with over easy eggs, potato pancake, bacon, and sourdough toast. The only downsides were the small size of the potato pancake and the fact that the toast tasted just like white toast, not sourdough. :( All in all, Island Kitchen is a pretty good breakfast place on Nantucket (most likely out of three other breakfast restaurants). There is a lot of seating but very few servers. It does get crowded around 9:00 or 10:00, so getting there early may be a good idea. read more

I came here again this summer with my son-in-law. The location is very central to all points of island and it has ample parking which is a great feature. I always have the panko crusted poached eggs Benedict. It was fabulous as usual and I love that Island Kitchen offers black beans as a substitute to potatoes. I had an iced coffee which was very smooth and thankfully very quick. I will warn diners that the servers are very rarely caught as the restaurant is extremely busy at breakfast. Asking for an extra side of salsa or another coffee is a certain prolonged wait. I feel as though our waitress had tables in many different sections of the restaurant making it difficult for her to properly keep an eye on all her tables. With simple organization, I believe Island Kitchen could offer a much smoother and enjoyable experience to their customers. read more

Island kitchen is a cozy little spot in Nantucket. We went for breakfast and to check out Holly Finigans shop next door, Happy Place. For breakfast I got the bagel and salmon ($15). There was easily a decent amount of salmon that *almost* made it worth $15. The cream cheese was a little too cold which made it hard to spread, and overall it was just okay. A few other dishes that were ordered were the Huevos Rancheros (looked amazing), a spinach and goat cheese omelette (eaten in its entirety) and a bacon egg and cheese. Everything looked good, and got gobbled up. No complaints. My only qualm was a crack in my coffee cup handle- but I just held the cup instead of of holding the handle. Such a cute breakfast spot!!! It's a little outside of town so it was nice and quite. The waiters were super nice and friendly and very attentive! The coffee mugs were also adorable. The food was fantastic. The breakfast potatoes were seasoned perfectly and very crispy but not to crispy. The over easy egg was cooked great. They give you a overly generous portion of bacon too! My only complaint was they didn't butter your toast or bring butter on the side, might have just been a one off experience though. Overall I will def be back when I am in town again! read more

Our experience here was very good and very bad. My husband's spinach and goat cheese scramble and my oatmeal ( because the Moroccan eggs were unavailable) were delicious! Coffee was blah at best and the service was beyond poor. Osha never returned to refill our water or coffee. My husband had to get up to ask for our bill --after waiting with empty plates for over 20 minutes -- and we finally gave up and went to the counter inside to pay. The boy who brought our check to the table was clearly annoyed when we asked him to clear. The women's bathroom needed refreshing, but worst of all was the lipstick on a fresh cup of coffee. Love the island kitchen. Getting a reservation at most places on island is a major ordeal, but you can usually get an island kitchen reservation a day or two in advance on OpenTable without issue. We've been for dinner 5 times this summer. To start, I love the chicken caesar. Family likes to share artichoke dip and pita as well. For mains, I've tried the burger, the steak, the chicken Milanese, the tuna tacos, and the carbonara. Only real miss was the carbonara, which was bad. The texture and flavor was totally off. Everything else I've tried was tasty and of good quality. The restaurant is located away from town, which is good and bad. On the plus, more down to earth crowd, prices are more fair, and getting reservation isn't big ordeal. It also has free parking, which is a plus. On the downside, the immediate area is a bit depressing (next to stop and shop and back side of the chicken box). The area around has a bit of a junkyard feel. But, they've done a pretty good job dressing up their covered patio with nice plantings to make it feel more inspired. Have had a few hiccups - was seated in a broken chair that I almost fell through once; was served water in a dirty glass with something crusted on the side another time, and was given a stained napkin the third time. Otherwise, service has been friendly and efficient. They seem much more competent and gracious than some other places on island. The restaurant has a connected ice cream parlor. If you want desert after dinner, you have to pay your bill at the restaurant and then go to order from the parlor separately. Could be nice to offer the ice cream from the parlor / deserts made with the ice cream served table side. The ice cream parlor brings in lots of crowds, which can make the parking lot chaotic and crowded. read more

It's a bit off the beaten path if you don't have a car or bike, but only about a mile walk from downtown, enough to work off the breakfast!
