Our 8 unit condo in Brooklyn has used Irwin Friedman & Son for several jobs over the years, and they've been pretty good. But we paid them a significant fee to do our sprinkler inspections and they haven't done the inspections they were contracted to do. Additionally, the city fined our building $5000 for the missing paperwork from a gas inspection they did. We contacted Friedman & Sons many times via phone, text and email -- and they have given us the run-around for many weeks, and have taken no actions to remedy this situation. We talked to another Condo Board in the neighborhood who uses them, and they had the same experience: did not receive the inspection services they paid for, received hefty fines from the city, Friedman & Son dodged contact and didn't remedy the situation. Be warned to NOT use them for inspection services - they are negligent. I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences! read more

This company (owner Brandon) flaked out on my job. After he said he could do the job, and I sent him the name of the toilet I wanted him to install, he never replied back to my emails. I asked him no less than 6 times to answer if he was still interested in doing my job. I know life happens, but at least he could have said "Sorry, I'm too busy". Also, if you need a COI for your job, good luck getting a response back from them. I thought I was being nice to wait for his answer, but not responding is just unprofessional. Do not hesitate to call Friedman & Son. They came through for us flawlessly in two very different plumbing crises. In the first, our waste pipe backed up over a 4th of July long weekend. Jay (the senior) had someone there right away to solve the problem. Later, as we were selling the house, we discovered that decades ago a plumber had not closed a permit. Although all of our systems worked perfectly, there have been code changes. As you might guess, there is a never-ending mess of red tape when dealing with the NYC Dept of Buildings. The Friedmans did the work expertly and saw us through the updates and multiple inspections. Jay and Brandon, his son, are smart, great guys, and always responsive, pleasant and knowledgeable. If we were still in the city I'd hire them again in a nano-second, for a reno or repairs. You can't do better! read more

Our contractor, who has been in the business for 40+ years and who started as plumber's helper, called us over after the plumbing for the kitchen sink was done. "See this? This is a Picasso." For our full, 3-storey gut reno, the pricing was mid-range. As per our contractor, the work is as good, if not better, than the higher-priced plumbers. Called ~9am and chatted with very pleasant owner, Mr. Friedman. Was assured someone would come by "in the afternoon" and crew arrived by 2:30pm, with a 30-minute warning. Very courteous, professional guys who were very thorough, resolved the problem and triple-checked their work. This is a local, family-owned business. Ye renters who have not had to deal with plumbing issues be warned - plumbing is expensive! They have fixed our tub, a kitchen faucet, a heating pipe leak and bleed our heating system. The best part is they PICK UP THE PHONE and when they say they are going to be there, they show up on time. I've dealt with 4 different plumbers at IF&S and all of them have been super friendly and nice. My boiler had a long standing series of issues. Made a call hellbent on getting a new boiler to solve all my problems. Brandon walked me through why it may be better to keep what I have and save money. The guys came out did a full inspection, did a full inspection and talked me through all the things wrong and how to correct them. After they finished they cleaned up the boiler room and tested every single radiator in the house to make sure the system was working. This helped identify one issue that I didn't even know about and the corrected it. Needless to say - this was a call worth making and I would call Friedman back at any time and also recommend them. I've contacted these guys twice and they could have been more professional in both circumstances. First, was a broken shower handle and when they arrived they insisted they would have to leave and drive around multiple boroughs at $150/hr to search in person for the part (starting in the Bronx, I'm in Williamsburg). I had to call the owner and spend time explaining that you can use "the internet" to find parts much quicker. The project took a month or so w/ multiple visits to ultimately fix which is understandable. I paid in person, got receipt, etc. Then I received a somewhat unpleasant collection call a couple months later saying they needed their money. When I told the owner it was paid in person, he said he would didn't think so but would check and I never heard back. Yesterday, there was a pretty serious flood in the apartment upstairs that flooded my bathroom. The upstairs guy and I tried these folks again, they were supposed to come between 2 and 4 yesterday, then today at 9am and never showed. The other reviews sound great and I'm assuming other people had positive experiences, wish I could say the same. read more

When it comes to plumbers not many people are excited to deal with them, Myself on the other hand have had the pleasure of working with Irwin Friedman & Son multiple times on various projects and it's as simple as this, THEY ARE THE BEST IN BUSINESS. Twice I have called them was to do gas work at one of my concrete production facilities in Queens, they came and worked closely with Con-Edison to resolve all of my gas leaks and assisted in attaining the proper permits to do so. I called and they showed up an hour later, they literally dropped everything and came running to assist me. When most people hear Con-Ed is involved they go running the opposite way, Jay and Brandon took on these projects head first with out blinking an eye. The second time I dealt with them was on a much smaller level, another gas leak, however this time at my home. Jay and Brandon came running AGAIN and made sure everything was repaired and tested properly. Jay and Brandon along with their team of trained professionals go above and beyond the call of duty no matter how big or small the job is. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone, however their name and company history speaks for itself, not many companies have been in business for almost 100 years. I contacted them and within hours, they had my building strict insurance requirements met, they and were onsite doing work... I was in such a pinch with a newly constructed kitchen. We had a complicated setup, and they had everything up and running in our kitchen in a few hours. I've used three plumbers in Williamsburg, based upon reviews from Yelp and Google. Of those three, Irwin Friedman's was the best and they are now my go to plumber. They checked all the boxes: Price: They fixed and replaced a leaky pipe for less than another charged me to unclog a drain. Speed: I would call them and they'd be there the next morning. Quality: This is the most important. They fixed problems that I didn't think were fixable. Pipes, clogs, they took care of those, which I would expect. But, once, I had standing water in the dishwasher. He took the dishwasher out, and found a piece of plastic in the motor. Took that out, and it worked like a charm! During a rain storm my basement bathroom tub started filling up with dark water. Called these guys and they did come out same night and charged what they said which was an emergency snaking of the sewer line for $750. The plumber who came out said that would fix it and said there was a 30 day warranty. Gave him a tip. 32 days later hurricane Henri hit and our basement flooded. I called Brandon to try to honor their warranty since how am I supposed to know when another storm would hit and clearly snaking didn't fix the issue. I even asked if a plumber would just come out and camera inspect the pipe and I would pay the cost. He said he'd call me back and never did. I found another plumber who figured out that my sump pump was broken. Basically snaking the line did nothing. If your plumber had inspected everything and not jump to snaking the line, it would've saved me $10k in repairing my basement. read more
