Iron Horse Pan Seared Scallop
Rupa B.

I went there on Ashlabd train day with plenty of skepticism. They do not have large selection, only one page front and back including the back page only for drinks. Which I actually liked. I had Iron Horse Pan Seared Scallop with mashed Cauliflower My friend had Pan Roasted Scottish Salmon w Risotto. Both came out super tasty. I had Stawbwrry Mojito and my friend ordered Jalapeño Margarita. Both of them were amazing. If I ever go back, that will be for Jalapino Margarita which I had only a few sip only. It was not from frozen margarita, which I often taste in many places. Service was great! On top of everything, it is just besides the train track, a nice place to have food and watch the trains coming and going. Good for the kids, good for the Richmonders to show off the visitors, guests from other cities. I would suggest to book place ahead to seat out side or to get windowview.

Food - 3.5 service - 4.5 ambiance - 4 This is one of the nicer restaurants in Ashland. I have been there twice now when I am in the area. The food is always better than you would think, but not great. The price is reasonable for what you get. For Ashland standards it's probably a 4 and I would go again if I am there. But if this restaurant were in dc area I would not go again.

House brined duck breast with mushrooms and risotto

Their FOOD, y'all. First of all, I was a bit skeptical about their duck because the only duck I've had is the Asian style way and you know, once you go that route, it's hard to go any other way. But I went on a limb and ordered their duck. Guys, it was FABULOUS. The duck was tender, and juicy, and cooked just right, while the sauce and the mushrooms deepened the savory taste if the duck meat. The risotto was not cooked as well - it was still slightly hard so I left most of it on my plate. I's recommend changing the risotto out for a plantain based dish. It would soften the duck but provide a little sweetness to the dish that I think it lacks. They also had a sweet potato soup that was delicious and I loved that they offered it. Service was great - for a large party, they did ok and we had no direct complaints. The view was nice and we loved seeing the train pass a couple of times too! 10/10 recommend, especially when you can bring kids so they can watch a train through the glass.

Another Ashland gem, that's locally owned and operated. This is a great spot to dine in a festive atmosphere with a great staff. They're knowledgeable about the food and the bartenders are great at concocting interesting drinks. I love the boneless short rib dish and my husband loves the pumpkin ravioli. It's the most upscale dining we've experienced in Ashland with an accessible, yet high end menu. They do have burgers and delicious truffle fries and lots more. A great part of dining here is its right on the train tracks, good people watching and eating on the patio is the best. Good local live music too. Highly recommended!

It was nice and rich with great flavor. Nice dark chocolate flavor mixed with buttery crust. My view on this place has pretty tiny portions too.

Last Friday's lunch decision directed me to this small town delicious spot. I hadn't been there in…read moreyears. First, I checked out the menu that is posted on the wall, and tried to make the right decision. EVERYTHING is homemade. Ok, I decided on the Tuna Salad on a white homemade yeast roll. You can select one side, so I had cucumber, tomato and onion salad. I couldn't pass up on fresh lemonade and a slice of one of the most delicious coconut pie I've ever had. The lady that took my order was soooo sweet and of course knowledgeable of the menu. I didn't feel rushed, just relaxed. Soooo we had the most interesting conversation that concluded her parents knew my mother back in the day. I didn't expect tears of joy at lunch. It was lovely! I didn't get her name, but I'll never forget her until I return with friends and family to experience this "small town" treasure. Ok, the food. The roll was golden brown, soft and screamed HomeMade. It was filled with a white flaky and well seasoned tuna salad, topped with fresh crunchy shredded lettuce. YUM ! The cucumber, grape tomato and onion salad had a lite vinaigrette dressing. Fresh !! There is freshly made strawberry lemonade, lemonade, Iced tea and the Pepsi fountain drink products. Ok, the star of the show. That slice of coconut pie was Perfect. The crust was brown, very flaky and filled with a thick creamy coconut filling. This little cute old town restaurant is next to the railroad track and train station that's across from Randolph Macon College. It's popular to the students and residents of Ashland. If you would like A DELICIOUS Lunch in a warm and cute small town restaurant, come to Homemade's by Suzanne!!!! Thank you

Mallory's Kitchen - pork chop sandwich

Mallory's is located in a strip mall, and has a large dining area. It opened 5 weeks prior to…read moretoday's visit, and the owner says things are going well, although my wife and I were alone in the dining room during our visit. The menu (at least the menu that was available at 3 PM) is limited to burgers and sandwiches ($9-$10), wings, fried or baked chicken dinners ($9 - $9.50) and side dishes.($2 - $3.) Sandwich offerings include Pulled pork, cheese steak, pork chop, fish, and crab cake, each comes with one side. Sides include string beans, coleslaw, fries, potato salad, and mac & cheese. There is a decent bar set up that appears to be geared toward tropical drinks -- lots of colored liquid in bottles. (The chalkboard special drink was a "blue long island.") I noticed some top shelf brands as well, so they are prepared to make people happy. We opted for a pork chop sandwich with mac & cheese and a cheese steak sandwich with fries. My wife and I always have a debate in small places how much of the food is precooked by Cisco or PFG and how much is truly made in a kitchen. I have to say in this case the food seemed to be truly fresh from the kitchen for the most part. The pork chop was tender and well seasoned, deep fried and on white bread. It was too big for my wife to finish. The cheese steak was gooey with melty cheese sauce and well-griddled onions in addition to bite sized thinly cut steak, again very well seasoned. I finished it and could have eaten more, but I was satisfied. The macaroni had a good amount of cheese mixed into the bechamel, seemingly house made. Only the fires were guaranteed frozen, and I have no qualms with that, very few affordable eats cut their own potatoes. This was a very satisfying lunch. Only two quibbles. Service is in styro take out containers, not plates. This was surprising, since the numerous tables bespeak an expectation of dining in. And for whatever reason they only have sweet tea, no unsweet. This is to be expected further south but seems an omission here. These are minor quibbles. Service was fast and friendly. Opening a restaurant on the back end of a pandemic is very brave. I hope the place thrives because the flavors are indeed good.
