We went to Ashland to check out The Market at Henry Clay Inn. It's open 7 days a week, serving up delicious coffee drinks, homemade pasties & light fare. The shop was quiet & had nice background music. There were a few tables to sit at & a long bar counter. The shop was empty, I'm sure due to the recent snowfall. I ordered my go to drink, an oat milk latte & my hubby enjoyed a chai latte & a pear almond pastry. The latte was delicious & the service was friendly on a cold day. The Henry Clay Inn is a very nice old inn and restaurant in the heart of Ashland. Our server was very friendly and explained everything to us, plus gave us some travel tips. The food is ok- we had the brunch menu as it was the weekend, and everything was fine, if a little under seasoned. The potatoes needed a good helping of salt and pepper, and the bacon wasn't as crispy as I prefer. It was a decent meal in a very nice venue. read more

We were visiting Ashland for the Light Up the Tracks and decided to stop in for dessert and coffee. We were warmly greeted by a couple of employees and seated right away. It wasn't crowded. We enjoyed the dessert and coffee and really look forward to going back in the spring time and sit on the beautiful front porch. This historic inn is situated right by Ashland's quaint train station, with a wide veranda for all the train and people watchers out there. Food is good, but not great, and service can be hit or miss. Last visit, we were seated on the veranda on a lovely day, then ignored by staff, who were leisurely coming and going amongst a smattering of other seated parties, for over forty minutes. One staff member, when hailed, did finally rectify the situation, but management never felt that they needed to apologize. They weren't even busy that day! So, go on a nice day for the view from the porch, but don't expect too much more. read more

we arrived at 7:00 pm for dinner. Didn't get our appetizers until 8:30. Our waitress apologized for the delay. at 9:15 we still had not received our entree. Our waitress again apologized and said she had not put our entree order in until 10 minutes after we got our appetizer. and then she disappeared for 30 minute. no water refill, no wine refill. just nothingness. for a $150 meal I expected a little bette. this is the second time we have been here I. 3 months and both times there. was a snafu in our orde. we want to support them but we won't be going back. read more

I would love to give this place a glowing review... but it's tough. I think the inn tries to pass itself off as historic. Saturday night, prime dining hours, and only 3 parties present... while other restaurants in town are packed. Prices are close to outrageous given the quantity. 2 very tasty pre-dinner rolls... extra rolls are extra $$$. Side (singular) is the side paired with the entree by the inn... no options. As the waiter approached his first words were that he was out of the exact menu option I'd chosen. The food presentation was good and the food was tasty, I'll give Henry Clay credit for that. Really wanted to like this place. Its so cool looking in a old house with a huge front porch. Made reservations because we thought we needed them. When we got there they had one other table occupied. Got seated right away and given menus. No one ever came back, we waited about 10 mins and was getting ready to go in remind them we were there. Server showed up, took drink orders. They have a couple draft selection and some bottles. Wife got a Mosco mule, it came in a glass glass, not a copper cup and was vodka and some sort of ginger ale. Not good. I ordered steak medium and potatoes. Steak came well done, like well done. Potatoes were good. Wife got the pork chop and broccoli. Pork chop super tuff, like cant chew it tuff. Ate what she could. Broccoli either had been setting around for ever or had been nuked it to death. Un edible,. Service was ok, when she asked how the food was we told her not great. She said sorry and then came back and comped the whole meal. We told her that was not necessary. That's what moved it from 2 to 3. The other table had a wrong cooked steak and by they time they got it recooked they had to leave and he took it to go. We had heard about the new chef and how amazing the food was but we did not experience anything amazing. Might try again some day but if they didn't comp the dinner we would have paid over $100 for food that we could barley eat. read more

The last time I reviewed this place was three years ago. Back then I gave them a five star review for brunch. Sadly that is no longer the case. On the pro side: the expansive front porch is still as inviting as ever, cooled by fans mounted in the high roof. Tables are spaced nicely, so you don't feel like you're eating with the neighbors. Shade trees and bushes frame it. The service is friendly. Now the cons: the food. We came for brunch. I know it has been three years, but the changes were disheartening. Not much variety in the breakfast side of the dishes. And while there were some salad options, a burger and a fish sandwich, the breakfast offerings were basically a bagel sandwich, pancakes, and your basic eggs and bacon/sausage plate. Something you can easily make it home, and not what you go looking for at brunch. I always look for a item that appears to be a feature item, and the offering I saw was described as a pork belly and lobster eggs Benedict. Here is how it is described on the menu: "House-made English muffin, wilted greens, house-cured pork belly bacon, chunky lobster hollandaise, two sunny eggs" What I got was the house made English muffin, two extremely overcooked, hard poached eggs that were not warm, an undressed green salad on the side, and hollandaise sauce with no hint of lobster. As I was examining it, I commented to one of my companions that I didn't see any lobster. A server passing by (not our server) overheard me and said it's blended in the sauce. Well, as you can see from the above text, that's not what it said on the menu. The menu specifically says chunky lobster hollandaise .Those were not two sunny eggs. I would've been happy with properly cooked poached eggs. Warm eggs. Those were not wilted greens. And I did not detect even a whisper of lobster flavor in the hollandaise. One of the pleasures of a good Benedict is cutting into the yolk of an egg and having it flow out and mix with hollandaise. Unfortunately, that's not this dish. Also, the two meager slices of house cured pork belly was more like under seasoned limp bacon. Didn't add much to the dish at all. The berry pancakes were good, accompanied by some warm berry compote, and some so-so lemon curd. The conductors plate, which is basically your eggs and choice of meat and potatoes or salad combo plate was meh. That combination doesn't come with a bread choice, which is kind of strange. I don't think I've ever been at a place that offers breakfast or brunch and doesn't offer at least toast with their eggs combo plate. I also got a tomato juice that was strangely warm like maybe the juice is sitting out of the refrigerator. I almost asked for ice but decided it wasn't that big a deal. Maybe to someone else it would be. So outside of the atmosphere, friendly service, and the one high point of the menu, which is the house made English muffins, I don't think I'd be in a hurry to rush back here. Unfortunately, the rest of the food was just lacking in quality and taste. Very different than what it was three years ago. read more

The henry Clay and is back and better than ever. after seeing the lines at Cracker Barrel and waffle house my wife and I decided to give this place another try and wow am I glad we did. The place is beautifully landscaped and set up and the prices are extremely reasonable with no wait. My wife got the gravy biscuits for 495 and I splurged and got the chicken and waffles. The coffee was good reviews were great and we are so lucky to have a place like this in our community here in Ashland! This would make a nice destination however I would recommend making reservations in advance if making the trip read more

I recently spent a night here - the place is worth the visit. The town of Ashland sits astride the Amtrak tracks- that is to say, the train tracks run right down the middle of town... The Henry Clay Inn is the third version of the place to have the name. Since there was a Nascar thing going on over in Richmond, this was the only place available. It turned out to be a gorgeous B&B. The rooms were all good sized and the beds were amazingly comfortable. The building is what you would expect to see in Virginia - big front porch with rocking chairs and such. The front desk folks were very helpful. There is a huge second story deck overlooking the train tracks and vintage train station. And yes, the trains run through quite often, two a day actually stop in Ashland. I had visions of the episode on "I Love Lucy" where they were staying in a motel and everytime the trains went by the whole place shook to pieces but you hardly felt or heard the trains. There are some nice meeting rooms should you have the need and they put out a continental breakfast that was nice. There is a restuarant on premises but I did not have the chance to eat there. The whole thing is very quaint and the entire place is wireless so you can get your email fix. There was plenty of parking behind the Inn and you could walk just about anywhere in Ashland due to it's central location. Highly recommended. read more

Oh my. The changes at the Inn make my heart sad. This was always a favorite spot for my late husband and me. We spent many a night here, enjoying the staff, the restaurant, and the general ambiance of the Henry Clay. In fact, my husband's ashes are spread across the street by the railroad station in front of the inn. The staff we loved is gone! The restaurant is gone. The inn has a derelict feel to it--the outside is in need of a good washing. I miss the women who worked here, the heart of the inn, and I'm sorry that I'll never come back. read more

Just spent a Thursday and Friday night at the Henry Clay for a wedding in Ashland. What a gem! The rooms are beautifully appointed and the staff was great. It is such a comfortable place to spend time with great porches and indoor seating areas. We were with several other couples and spent delightful hours sitting on those porches with adult beverages. There are numerous restaurants within walking distance (actually pretty much the entire town is within walking distance.) One word of caution: if you don't like trains or you're a light sleeper this may not be the inn for you as train traffic is pretty constant. We were on the back side of the inn and didn't even hear the trains at night, but full disclosure requires me to admit I'm a little hard of hearing and I'm a very sounds sleeper. I will look forward to another visit to Ashland and a stay at the Henry Clay Inn. read more

My sisters and I stayed here for my birthday getaway. What a delightful place to spend time. Short walk to downtown Ashland with some very good places to eat and shop. It's beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable. The absolute best part of the stay is the people who work there. We were greeted with smiles and friendly ladies who made us feel welcome. The young woman on the front desk later in the evening, Starr, was most gracious and friendly. We enjoyed some conversation with her and she made us feel we were part of the family! She went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Breakfast was perfect with quite a lot to choose from and delicious coffee. The young man who waited on us was friendly and also made us feel right at home. Definitely would recommend staying here. Note: If you can't tolerate the sounds of a train passing on a regular basis it might not be for you but we weren't bothered by it. Or you could just bring your own small fan to drown out the sound. :) read more

This past week, my Fiancee and I spent a couple of days getting out of DC in the small town of Ashland, VA. We looked at the Henry Clay, as we like staying at smaller inns and B&Bs as opposed to big chain hotels where possible, and I especially like the proximity to the railroad tracks and downtown here. The Inn is a great old Southern style building; even though it was built in 1992 it still has that southern charm of rocking chairs out on both porches. Our room was decently sized, and well appointed and decorated without being over the top or gaudy. My only complaint, and a minor one at that, is that for the room we were in (208), the mattress was a bit on the firm side for what I like, but other than that it was nice. The staff here were all quite friendly and willing to help us get checked in and figure everything out. One interesting thing about this place is that there is no overnight staff; everyone leaves by 6pm, so with your room key they give you a key to the front door. They also have an on-call number for emergencies, so you're never completely left alone should the need for assistance arise. In addition to the rooms and delightful porch for sitting, the Inn offers a decent continental breakfast, nothing spectacular, but perfectly adequate. They also have a nice small gift shop/store with some local artwork, crafts, and other paraphernalia. The entire Inn is wireless, with a good signal, so you can get your internet and email fix should you need it. Overall, the Henry Clay sits at a good central location for Ashland, and is well worth a visit for anyone planning on stopping through the town. read more

Recently found out they serve breakfast/brunch even if you don't stay at the Inn. We were pleasantly surprised to find out how good the food is! Great prices too. Had one of the better omelets I've had in a long time. Perfectly cooked potatoes and veggies. They also have some other good options, benedicts and biscuit and gravy. Beautiful interior. My family recently stayed at the Henry Clay Inn for our wedding at the Historic Hanover Tavern. I can't being to say how wonderful the staff and the venue were. Everyone had a wonderful time, the food and the rooms were wonderful and the location was perfect. We will be staying there on a regular basis.
