You may end up inadvertently talking to a large Irish man at length about how proud he is of his son. You may end up hearing a one man band play a Pogues song backed by midi drums. You may run into a raucous Irish rugby side that just won some sort of city tournament. There are plenty of things that may happen at Irish Haven, but one thing is certain -- it's near impossible to have a bad time here. There's nothing complex about Irish Haven. It's no homage to some long lost art of drink making, there is no quirky and overwrought interior. This place is just a great bar with plenty of space to have a pint with friends and enjoy yourself. Speaking of pints, it's worth noting that the Haven offers a $4 pint of Guinness that is, according to my Irish friend, the best Guinness pour in the city. Sure, you can come because this is the location used for the bar scenes in Scorsese's The Departed. But I'd encourage you to stay, have a pint, listen to some Irish tunes on the jukebox, and just enjoy yourself. That, my friends, is where Irish Haven really excels. read more

I was not very impressed by this bar. The bar tenders seemed like they weren't very attentive and didn't really care about filling up your cup/pitcher all the way. A good deal of foam was left at the top of my pitchers. Speaking of pitchers, a pitcher of Coors is $12 and pitcher of Blue Moon is $16, which is decent I guess if I had received pitchers with less foam. The bar was really a bunch of hipster types, which is cool if you like that but that's not really my style. I guess it's because Sunset Park is the new cheap place to live and this is one of the only Irish bars in this Mexican/Puerto Rican/Chinese neighborhood. I will say I did enjoy the Jukebox in this place. After enough drinks, I was o\all over it. Except one guy decided to buy 10 songs before me and I had to wait forever. But that's life. It's also nice they have a pool table in the back in case you want more to do. Overall, this bar was just meh. Poor bar tenders, the crowd, and honestly how dead it was on a Friday night are reasons I wasn't a fan. I did hear that they do have free food during the week (Taco nights, etc), but I've never been. This cash-only Irish Pub has an air of authenticity. It's not polished, decorated-to-death, and over priced. If you're looking for a down to earth watering hole to go have some brews with your buddies - this is it. There is a jukebox and a pool table if you're into that sort of thing. Personally I go to pool halls to play pool, and bars to drink, but to each their own! Some nights of the week there are theoretically free tacos and other "tapas" to be had, but I've never been here during a weekday yet! There are some drawbacks however - for example no food (other than the above)! No cocktails either, which may account for the patrons being predominately male. The beer selection is good, not great. Men's bathroom stalls have "saloon doors" (panels missing) so yeah... keep that in mind. read more

Like some of the Bay Ridge bars, this place is basically a time machine that takes you to working class, 1960s Brooklyn. The cheap drinks, cheeky staff, amazing ambiance, and Irish/classic rock jukebox make this one of the most fun/interesting bars in New York. The first time you go, you may feel a little anxious, but this is just part of the experience and will pass with a drink or two. I've been to here about three times now and its a pretty decent place. Lots of locals here, I find saturday's are there better nights if you truly want to experience what it has to offer. The staff is by far much better than the last time I was here with a friend. This is a great place to bring groups of friends and drink prices are average about 12 dollars for a pitcher of bud. The Haven had always been somewhere my family, friends, and I frequented. Last week I used the back room as a resting spot for my wedding guests in between the ceremony and reception. There were way more people than I had thought but the owner Matt and Kristina the bartender had a great handle on all the guests, quenching everyone's thirst. They did a great job setting up for us making everyone comfortable and Matt was so easy to work with. It made less stress for me knowing everyone had somewhere local to go for some snacks and drinks. Picture a better version of Paddy's Pub from Always Sunny In Philadelphia...Great prices, Great specials, Complimentary Food (Taco Tuesdays, Mac and Cheese Mondays, Irish Soda bread on weekends, etc....), surprisingly decent selection of tap beers, Karaoke/DJ/Live music on weekends, Pool tables, Beer pong, oh, and The Departed was actually filmed here (no bullshit!) Owners/Staff are awesome, always accommodating and super friendly (unless you're a dick, then Mike D. might have to throw you a beating). Regulars are a cast of characters worthy of their own reality show. Irish Haven is the best bar to go to be yourself....a drunk yourself, but yourself nonetheless. read more

He also beat a guy up here for ordering cranberry juice although you won't ever seen anyone order cranberry juice here in real life. Perhaps thats what made the bar so authentic for the film. What a great place to be on St. Paddy's day. Decided to venture away from Manhattan to this place out in Sunset park. a true Irish crowd. they had a bunch of free food and pints of guinness for $5. pretty good. the staff are friendly but there is only 1 toilet for the women's. people are friendly and there is a back room that kinda reminds me of a rec room. The departed was filmed there which is a bit cool. not as divey as I expected. I expected to see more characters. I would go here again. read more

Thanks to Matt and the whole Irish Haven crew for the back room at the Haven. We had our son's baptism reception in the back room which was perfect. Matt took care of everything, helped the caterer and balloon deliveries go smoothly, and saved the day when I forgot the knife for the cake. An acquaintance once told me, he does not stop here anymore, I was shocked, so I had to stop and find out why. They changed permanent staff we know some months back. There seems to be a continuous change in bartenders (mostly barmaids) who are not flexible and cannot run the bar. I was not there 10 minutes and a street wino who came in, began to shake down customers. for money to buy drinks, myself included, and he was not immediately tossed out. I was surprised to see a customer having to do it because the barmaid was deep in conversation. It must have been the social hour here. When Jane was here the derelicts were ejected faster then fast. My favorite quote from her: if you act up, you're out of here, no ojective case, just the way it should be. Customers should have a place to relax. read more

What can i say, simply the best bar in New York. I am a little nostalgic penning this as unfortunately this review "doubles" as a memoirs!! I was deeply saddened to hear at the wknd that this fine establishment is to close down next March 2011. I for one will be back at the Closing down party week in late Feb. I hope some of my many comrades from the great Brooklyn Shamrocks side of 2001 will be there. (How St Barnabos came back and robbed us on the buzzer i do not know!!) I know myself (Reg), martin, JJ Curran, Carv, McElroy, Bailey , Willie Doran, Baldy, Sloaney, Fagey, Mike Lawlor & Mike Kane, Bobby, Kevin Bateson, Enda lally, Jamie Lally, Brendan Egan, Martin Fleming, Dara, Donal, Fitzy, Tiernan, etc etc are due a 10 year reunion. Manys a night after training in shore road under the verezona bridge we would head for jar in the haven. As the song goes, those were the days.................. I was back in the Haven on Paddys day eve 2005 and it hadn't changed a bit, Marty "never trust a dub" Murphy and Dessie spent the summer there this year and by all accounts the place is still stuck in a time warp.....i love it. Big donnagh at the bar, Mike Collins in his usual seat, Katey behind working the taps. Ahh i miss that place. When bars are spoken about to have character, sometimes the word is overused, but in this case the hat fits. The aforementioned unused kitchen a previous reviewer spoke about upholds this tag. What a boozer, the jukebox to many cultured ears may sound outdated but not to me, hasn't been updated in many a year and if its not broke don't fix it. i can still hear the boss booming out "my hometown" my anthem to summer 2001. Many a shamrock's player and young J1er (or not) in my case, changed the Navillus cheque in the haven on a Thursday. Sure wouldn't it be rude to just walk after such a deed, many a pint was drank on those Thursday's and indeed the wknd just began there. Phone calls from the emerald isle would come through from ladys back home and mike behind the bar would say we had just left....another buller dodged (these were the days before mobiles were 2nd nature and a man could go untracked for days on end)!! Some say the framed t - shirts on the wall are collectors items, well I'm glad to say myself, dessie and martin have one, the 2 lads got theirs by unorthodox means : ). I know alot has changed inthe last 9/10 years, no "Cuckoos Nest" next door, no Snook Inn and John Ward up in bayridge 86th and 4th, i hope the wicked monk is still going, very nice people the owners from galway. Anyway ill sign off now and say the Haven is not best known for being in departed but for being a sanctuary to so many Irish in the states over the years, wheter it be the wet behind the years students over for a bit of ball in the summer, the lads workin there indefinitely or the men born and rared in the US but still with a desire to hold close the good traits and watering holes of home. Best local bar I've been to. $5 cocktails $4 beers, a pool table AND a jukebox. The patrons aren't assholes for the most part and if you catch an old Irish man sitting at the bar lonely on a Sunday afternoon he might buy you a draft cider. Brilliant - Haven has been a great spot for years! Great people and it has always been a safe place. I hung out there in the mid - late 80s and even then, wherever you were from - the friendship was great and everyone looked out for each other. I went back a couple of years ago and got a copy of the DVD - 40 years of photos from one of our old friends . You never felt out of place even if you were just drinking orange juice! If I can get a chance to go in the next couple of years again with the dh, I will. I always regale how great it was to our 4 kids - now our oldest is 18, he will probably stop in when he goes over.
