Has one of the best Ramen ever!!! Usually get the Yuzu Shoyu & its bomb. Ambiance is cool and relaxed. Most times you will have to share a table with other people which is totally cool because that's how you can meet new people. Service is pretty quick for the most part. ((4.25 stars)) haven't been to Ippudo in a long time--maybe in over 10 years...the ramen here definitely was one of the best city back when there were not as many noodle spots in NYC as there are now. however Ippudo set the standard back in the late naughts and raised the culture of ramen when it first opened its doors. headed here for lunch with family for some Japanese food, recently. the restaurant has two spaces: the small waiting area / bar area and the larger dining room. the interior decor is Japanese but not kitschy. fairly well-maintained, uncluttered, clean space, but the dining area is fairly loud, so prepare to increase your volume if you're having a conversation. there are a variety of seating options for solos, couples, and groups. the way the seating is set up you are likely to be sitting with strangers in areas of the restaurant...but the seating is kinda spacious so you're not on top of each other even if you are sitting with people you don't know. while this is a tonkotsu-styled ramen restaurant, Ippudo also serves other dishes if you don't feel like a noodle soup which was my mood that day. some of the dishes we ordered: edamame, karaage (Japanese fried chicken), spicy shrimp tempura rolls, and Shiromaru Motoaji ramen. edamame is always a good light munch at any Japanese restaurant and here it is garlicky and seasoned well. the karaage (5 piece) is made up of big pieces of dark meat fried to tasty seasoned crunchiness. shareable in a group bc the pieces are large and filling. definitely recommend it as an appetizer or the smaller portion version as part of a main. the spicy shrimp tempura roll works well to share or eat as a main. big portion of a sushi roll: crunchy battered shrimp, avocado, ber, and more topped with spicy mayo sauce + unagi sauce. filling. and the Shiromaru Motoaji ramen was enjoyed. didn't even try a slurp of the noods because i was so full. the service was friendly, quick, and had the right amount of attentiveness. Ippudo has always been busy place at lunch or dinner time. it was practically full by 1ish pm. there was no wait for a table if you get there by 12 noon or so. you can't make reservations here, so my advice is get here with your whole group on the earlier side if you don't want to wait long. this is sorta must-try if you want to try iconic places in NYC's noodle landscape. read more

Sadly a big change since we were last here. First, we popped in on a weekday for lunch, and there were barely any people there - two tables of 4, and we were seated at one of the long tables a long a fire-pit like charcoal and mirror, with the cool decor around us, that hadn't changed much which was nice. The one waitress was less than enthusiastic, barely answering questions about a menu that was now on a QR wooden cube, and cell signal that wasn't the strongest in the restaurant. When another couple came in, they tried to seat them right beside us, despite 90% of the restaurant being empty and fortunately they decided to move themselves down and away from us on their own since they also found it odd to be crammed together when most of the restaurant was empty. Very odd and disappointing on trying to seat us that close together. Waitstaff came to take appetizer orders (the bao) and then came back for ramen order only much later after she cleared our bao plates. Overall just felt a lack of the same respect to customers (remember the shout when people were brought in? we didn't get that, either). At least when we left was one guy cleaning up the table who thanked us. Pork bun was a couple of thin slices of chashu (it used to be a giant piece that overhung outside of the bao with a thick savory spicy paste) - but instead now it just had a light brush that left the flavor lacking and definitely not as rich in flavor as the past version. Disappointed there. The Akamaru Modern, our favorite, has been replaced with a watery, salty Shinaji version that disappointed, not nearly the same depth of flavor or profile for $22 (a lot more expensive than the past, which I get from inflation, but still would be better if it was the original modern...). The pork was two small thin sliced loin pieces, and while contained some flavor, was a far cry from their fatty chashu they used to include; now it's a separate order to the side for $7. Egg was probably the best part of the ramen (but still charged extra for it). I tried the Shiromaru Motoaji which was bland but safe, I guess, also with an egg and the pork was that same thin-sliced loin that was disappointing. Decor still the same great style, but I miss the old Ippudo. And all for $85 with tax & tip at the end of the day, I expected far better and looks like I'll have to hard pass on coming back to this particularly as we had upset stomachs in both of us dining that day in the afternoon... read more

We stumbled upon this find on a rainy thanksgiving day while we were staying at the moxy around the corner pretty much and I'm so glad we did. I loved the way they did their ramen- from thin noodles, flavorful but not greasy broth and thin pork, it really warmed us up on a rainy day and filled us up perfectly. I got to try this super nigori sake, which I didn't even know was that different than nigori sake, it was think almost like a smoothy but with the nigori flavor. This is a ramen spot I've been going to for many years when it solely focused on serving good ramen and delicious pork buns. Now they have elevated to serving a variety of Japanese dishes to truly immerse in some Japanese comfort food but with more finesse. I've seen the menu change and evolve throughout the years but I'll be focusing on the current menu. I ordered my go-to order which is Pork Buns (which they now serve in a variety from fried chicken and fried shrimp) and Akamaru Shinaji with extra garlic, which they slice and diced for me since previously they served the garlic press and raw garlic glove. So I appreciated the improvement in serving a topping such as extra garlic. The new item I ordered was a Rice Bowl with Karaage (Fried Chicken) and this was quite a filling dish with plenty of karaage, sauce, toppings, and rice. This is a very saucy, crunchy, and slightly sweet sauce of a dish so do ask if you want to tone down on the sauce if you wish to try this dish. This location always has the same iconic entrance and bar where many people lounge and wait to be seated. The dining area has various seating options from the bar where you can see the food being cooked, prepped, and made (which is a favorite spot of mine), a communal table to eat alongside other guests, round tables for larger parties, and booth type tables that overlook the entire space. They've expanded the menu quite a bit since then and this is still the most reviewed spot on Yelp in NYC! We started off with the Shishito Peppers which had a nice blend of smoky and spicy flavors. The yuzu salt was absolutely delicious enhancing the flavors so delicately. The yuzu complements the peppers a lot better than a squeeze of lemon. As for the ramen, we decided to split two. We don't eat pork so that limited our options quite a bit. I appreciate that they have a solid vegetarian menu and even chicken chashu as a protein option! The Daizu No Chikara Miso Ramen was outstanding. The broth was luscious, creamy, and extremely flavorful. I loved the tofu chashu but wish there was more than just 2 slices. The toppings were all very fresh and added varying textures and flavors which came together perfectly. The Spicy Miso Ramen was also outstanding. The real highlight of this one was the Niku-miso bolognese on top. It has that umami flavor and the texture is almost like a ground meat but it is vegetarian somehow. The spices used are so rich and aromatic; it looks like a lot but actually doesn't overpower the bowl at all. There were only 2 small chicken chashu slices which lacked seasoning, and again, I wish there was more than 2 slices. Both orders came with the thick wavy noodles which I was absolutely obsessed with! They were bouncy, chewy, and soft. They soaked up the broth so well. We added Tamago aka Marinated Seasoned Egg to both which was an absolute must. It's disappointing that the egg isn't included especially considering their prices already.
