I was walking around Ferndale with my boyfriend and we decided to try Inyo. It's very cold outside and we were very hungry so we didn't feel like trekking any more. We literally waited fifteen minutes to get a menu and then another ten minutes before we got up and left. Nobody came to get our order. Meanwhile, there were at least five servers milling around and just chatting with each other . I get it- working in a restaurant can suck but be attentive! Solid 3 stars, though I feel like giving it 5 just for the drink I ordered. See, I'm a vodka tonic drinker: it's safe and reliable just like my Honda Civic. With the substantially slow service on the back patio, I couldn't help but peruse the drink menu- that's when I saw the Godzilla. Did I mention that, as a child, I always told people I wanted to grow up to be Godzilla? No? Yea. I don't know what TY KU Liqueur is, and I usually hate Hennessy VS- but the combination was surprisingly pleasant, fragrant, and lovely. Not exactly what I expected from a drink named "Godzilla", but it was a pleasant surprise nonetheless, and I was relieved that it wasn't some sock-u-in-the-face drink that would chase me straight back to my old standby. Alright, so I have to say, this place surprised the socks out of me! I must admit, I dislike Asian fusion places with a passion and coming from the East Coast, I had very high expectation of good sushi places. However, that's where my conceited notions ended, and my great experience began. Coupla positive pointers: 1. AMAZING salmon! wow, this came out of nowhere! My friend and I ordered a "Chef's special plate" and there were multiple, large portions of good quality fish. Crappy Chinese food with very high prices! We were not impressed, left hungry, and wishing we could forget that experience. Service: polite and friendly Appetizers: the rainbow roll was good Entrees: spicy crispy chicken was not spicy and was covered in some sort of disgusting red sauce - almost like a sweet and sour The Kung pao chicken was covered in the exact same sweet and sour sauce and I opted to have it boxed up for the dog rather than eat it. I ordered the crab/avocado/caviar roll so that I wouldn't starve. It was delicious but wasn't enough food to fill me up. I would recommend it as an appetizer. great menu, so we expected the chef's choice sushi/nigiri plate to reflect that. they gave us a california roll! don't listen to the waiter when he says the chef's choice is the way to go to entice you to try something new. they should call it the daily deal or first-timer's platter and leave it at that. nigiri was fresh and melted in my mouth. would have liked to try some of the exotic, innovative rolls but chef didn't pick those for us. so much for promoting your more expensive, daring rolls. waiter recommended fish special (for 2 to share) and the presentation was worth it. a little heavy on the sauce though and the measly (barely) 1 c. of rice wasn't really enough for 2. drink menu (especially the sake specials) v creative. but waiter was quite slow to 1) first bring our drinks, 2) then bring my hubby a glass for his beer. and i really question how much alcohol was in the sweet sake drink i ordered. go for adventure with little expectations and you'll enjoy yourself. read more

Nice bar, cool atmosphere, but everything else sucks. My experience started off wrong with the front door being locked with a sign on it to walk around to the back. Really? Why have a front door if you make people walk to the other side of the restaurant? Once inside it wasn't much better. Most places have excellent signature cocktails that compliment their food, not this joint. I don't know who made up their signature drinks, but they flat out suck. I had whatever their whiskey signature drink was and it was horrible. I'd like to post the name of it, but they don't advertise their crappy drinks anywhere on their online menus. The waitress asked me how it was and I said "horrible." I had everyone at the table try it and they all agreed. There were four of us, and we each tried a different cocktail, one was good, two were just ok, and mine was horrid. Our waitresses response to telling her the drink sucked? She just said "really? most people like them." Her bad, I only had that drink for my whole meal prior to heading out. I would have had 2-3 for sure had she brought me something that wasn't horrible in its place. The food looked good. Great presentation, but it didn't taste so good. Over priced for sure. Inyo serves sushi (and other fare they call "Asian Fusion") for folks who either don't care for this cuisine or don't know that better versions of nearly all of its food exists elsewhere for a lower price point. Because I believe in trying things more than once before passing Yelp judgement, I've held off on my review, but today's $50 lunch pulled the trigger. FOUR DOLLARS for packaged tea? Out of a tea box? With four options, none of which were exotic or interesting? And then you couldn't bother to bring us hot water? Yep, $8 for two "hot" teas, from a pretty but impossibly awkward tea pot which was never refilled. My house salad looked and tasted great, with a variety of greens, fresh, firm tomatoes and great ginger dressing. At $5, this was probably the best value on our bill, both taste and portion-size wise. My Miso soup was fine, but its tofu was cold and the bowl small for $4. Like my soup, my rainbow roll was fine, but not particularly big and had no distinct taste. For its $13 price point, my companion thought it should have been more impressive. As for my companion's lunch, that was a vegetarian Chow Mein with tofu. Again, this was good, but not outstanding or portioned in such a way at to justify a $14 charge. Service was fine, if a bit overly solicitous at times and, for all the attempts to up-sell or add-on, more hot water could have made its way to the table during any of those visits. The atmosphere is acceptable, as is the decor, although I find the seating to be more about looks than comfort. FYI: Every time I've been in this place, it's been beyond cold, and today was no exception. Bring a coat or sweater if you usually find restaurants chilly, because they keep this place like a meat locker. I will say that, while I didn't partake today, the (alcoholic) drinks I've had here have stood out positively from the food, although the pricing is similar. Overall, I'm in agreement with those who note that less expensive, more tasty, Asian food is available all over town - or simply down the street. Hopefully, the prices reflect a decent wage for the numerous workers on the floor and aren't simply the cost of doing business in Ferndale. read more

Inyo is our "date night standard". The ambiance is really lovely, private, low lit, cozy. It's also really good for groups, they have a back patio(by parking lot) and high tops. Typically, I feel the quality is always the same and presentation is good which is great for sushi restaurants and I love love love the whipped wasabi. They have a full bar and the lychee fruit martini is scrumptious. They do Groupon a lot, I'm not sure why, I don't think they need it! People should just go try it! So, got a Groupon for our anniversary. Went and sat at one of the high too tables by the bar. It was happy hour, but I wasn't allowed to order off the happy hour menu because I wasn't sitting at the bar...just like 5 feet away in the lounge area. I hadn't even had anything to eat or drink and I was already annoyed. I have never been anywhere that happy hour only applies if you sit in a certain area. Dance music was really loud. I guess the issue is that they still can't decide if they want to be a good Asian fusion resturant or a too-hip-for-this-GenXer after work hangout. Oh yeah, so if its trying to go towards that aspect you need a few beers on tap. Yeah, a bar without any taps. Did $50 of chef's choice with a trend towards salmon. We received 8 sashimi, two rolls (one spicy, one fried) and six pieces of nigiri. All of the fish and rolls were fantastic. The one thing I've never had a beef with is the quality of the food. The salmon was FAN. TAS. TIC. The albacore was unctuous, and the flavors were balanced for the most part. The spicy Roll had spicy mayo AND siracha on top-too muh heat IMHO, but some people like having that one beastly spicy roll. But again, I think the portion was a bit on the small size. If all the sashimi were nigiri they would be close to what I'd expect to get for $50. Or maybe like one pedestrian roll. We have been to Inyo many, many times. We like to go Saturday evenings after a long day at work. It is always busy with a wait for a table. Every time they offer for us to sit at sushi bar and they will come and get us when a table is ready. We never do because it always seems like a ruse to stick you there and forget about you. Guess what! ? It is! First and last time we do that and last time going to Inyo. Time to find better sushi somewhere else. For a bill totalling $104 for 2 people, we expect better. read more

The staff at inyo always remember me, what I like and how I like it. You get what you pay for in this world. The prices are not the cheapest, but their product is amazing. The presentation is also amazing. I suggest the tuna block, sweet dreams, walu roll and the spicy tuna roll to name a couple. This is a must for a week night or a weekend dinner and drinks with friends. Its my favorite sushi around. As someone with six years of experience as a waitress, it's rare for me to be this critical. We went to Inyo an hour before closing - which means the waitress should not have yet been sidetracked trying to do sidework to leave, the place wasn't busy, and there is no excuse for bad service. We waited ten minutes to be greeted - which I can excuse. However, our waitress did not introduce herself, did not ask if we'd like to start with some drinks, etc. - just stood there expectantly. We ordered a bottle of wine. Fast forward 15 minutes - still no drinks. The waitress comes back and takes our order while we wait. We wait another 10 minutes for this bottle of wine, which finally shows up before we can flag the waitress down to cancel it. She didn't present it - just opened, poured and walked away. Not a big deal for a cheap bottle of wine, but not classy. Fast forward again to where we are considering canceling our appetizer because it's been 20 minutes since we ordered and we figure at this rate it will show up with our food. Spring rolls show up. They're okay. We barely get into them before the entree shows up. At this rate, I lose all faith because I might as well have gone to Panda Express for the quality of chicken I was served. Do you use frozen orange chicken from Meijer as your meat? Literally that bad. We eat anyway and the waitress never comes to check on us to make sure it came out correctly. Also had to flag her down for a bill. On the list of bad experiences with service, this one takes the cake. It doesn't help that the food was terrible. read more

Inyo is my go to for Sushi. Their rolls are fantastic, my favorites are of course a Rainbow Roll, California Roll, and the Avocado Roll. I always get an order of Edamame which is steamed to perfection and perfectly salted. Their vegetable fried rice is a must have, I always add chicken. It is never greasy and always exactly what I want. They have a great menu with a lot of options that will not disappoint. I recommend Inyo to anyone and everyone that enjoys sushi. read more

I really like Inyo, and although I don't eat sushi as much as I'd like to, I could tell immediately that this was 10 times better than the stuff I had two weeks ago...maybe I know a little more than I give myself credit for. We did have a Groupon again, and with it applied to our bill we still racked up a $35 tab (for 2 so really $55- not including tip) - That's a bit steep for lunch, but a "once in a while splurge" isn't gonna break the bank! Today we had Tsunami, Sunshine, and Spicy California rolls....all tasted dynamite! I had the hot and sour soup, and it hit the spot on this cold, getting colder day! Then there was dessert....-see pic- it was really extravagant, again I'm not the best person to run to with your deep fried rolls, or confections, maybe its the tempura...but I didn't think it tasted as good as it looked...I liked the ice cream center, but I'm the rest was, just not my cup of tea.....speaking of tea...very good green tea here, as well as a nice full bodied coffee, served with a rock sugar stick to sweeten - it was adorably awesome! We visited on a Monday evening with 5 lady friends. Outdoor seating was plentiful and restaurant was not crowded. Let me say, the food is fantastic. HOWEVER, we were only half way through our meals, chopsticks still in hand, plates still half full and conversation fast and furious when the waitstaff (waitress and bus person) arrived at our table with take home boxes and bags in hand and began forcing us to take them whether we wanted them or not. Since my dish was still quite hot; and still quite delicious, I had to take this unwanted box and place it on the table. Still eating, we were next presented with our bills for payment. We were one of three tables occupied outside; it was like 7:00 pm and a lovely evening. We had arrived at 6:00 pm. Why the bum rush?? I will be eating there again this month (I always give good food another chance in the face of difficult service issues). If this occurs again, I will speak to management and think twice before coming back. Sorry, I just don't like to be rushed when I am with good friends enjoying good food. read more

We decide to order the Sunomono salad with Octopus, the Summer roll and the Volcano roll. Everything was delicious and extremely fresh. The Summer roll was a bit bland, but then again that is needed on a menu at times. We didn't have anything to drink, but the selection seemed to be good. Walking to the Woodward entrance, and then being redirected by a paper sign was a little off putting. There is no way of knowing that the rear is the main entrance, but this is a minor gripe. Walking in, I and my date were very impressed with the decor. Very upscale looking for Fashionable Ferndale. We were seated quickly, and a server came right over to greet us. The service was fantastic, as was the food. What I found not appealing was the fact that almost every sushi roll was $10, and the menu was overwhelming. Too much going on for such a small place. Chill! Been coming here for almost 10 years and have usually left satisfied. They have tasty sushi and martinis, my fav is the "Karma" martini! First off, it's a nice place. Service was excellent. Sushi was good. Drinks were great. My problem is it's $12-$16 for the specialty rolls and we only got 5 pieces. It was clear that with only one end piece, we weren't getting the whole roll. My other complaint is the tempura rolls we ordered were not even warm. Presentation was fantastic and the drinks, though pricey, were absolutely worth it. I just don't think the sushi comes close to be worth that price. We ordered the bonzai and the zen cocktails. Inyo roll (8pieces), dynamite roll (5pieces), and vegas roll (5pieces) The only thing I'd come back for is the cocktails, and I'd like to try the entrees. We visited Inyo on a Wednesday night. We were seated right away with no wait. Our server was prompt and polite. I explained I had a Groupon and she said we could settle it at the end. We ordered spring rolls and sake to start. The spring rolls were very good with a plum type sauce that really completed them. The sake was warm and tasted as good as any sake I have ever had. I ordered a lobster dish in sauce with fried rice on the side. Our food came out in a relatively short amount of time. The sauce on the lobster dish was amazing. I dumped the rice right on the plate and mixed it all together. I was tempted to order sushi but they had a note saying you could only order sushi if you ordered at least $35 worth. I didn't want that much sushi so I held off. Overall a nice dining experience. read more

This place has a really modern design and a wide selection or menu, I can tell the servers that work there are up very up to the restaurant's standards and well known as well. Our food is right on point and I'm very thankful that the waiter helped to explain the ingredients that are in the food for my boyfriend, and not to mention their martini taste very delicious too. Went to Inyo for Sushi but did not have any..... Why? 1) We walked in the restaurant and they offered us the empty sushi bar that no one was sitting at in the back of the restaurant, even though the restaurant was packed except this poorly designed bar. Talk about uncomfortable. It's really low..... Not a good bar at all. 2) The maitre'd or hostess said that she would get us seated at the front of the restaurant and that there are 3 tables that need to be cleaned. Well, our waitress came and told us it would take 20 minutes. Really....... To bus a table? .....and..... 3) That's not all. The smell of the restaurant was so strong. It smelt like fresh lead paint or turpinetin when you walked in the restaurant. We thought the smell would go away but the longer you stayed there the worse it got. I have never had a complaint about Inyo's food or service but last night I picked up my order on my home from work and I was throughly disgusted with my meal. The rice was overcooked and it was sooooo gummy. I thought I was chewing gum. I'm not sure what happened but it was awful. I threw it away. I tried Inyo Sushi last Sunday and was very pleasantly surprised by the ambiance, quality of the sushi as well as their lunch bottomless drinks! First, lets start with the bottomless drinks. They offer this from 11-4 on the weekends and they give you a menu of about 7-10 drinks to choose from. The price is $15, but the best part is that you aren't limited to just the first drink you choose! Once you finish your first drink you can either choose the same one or switch to any of the other drinks on the list. Love it! I got the Vegas Roll when I went, which was AMAZING!! it was very unique and tasty. The only reason that I am giving Inyo 4 stars instead of 5 is because the rolls were pretty small. I paid $15 for a sushi roll, but only got 6 pieces of sushi (albeit a delicious 6 pieces). I was expecting a little bit more sushi for the money that I was paying. Overall a great sushi place with a great ambiance, great tasting food, and a great bottomless drink deal. I just wish their portions were a little bit bigger. read more

My friend ordered the lettuce wraps and they wanted to charge her $3 for extra lettuce (they only provided a few and there was a lot of meat left). They also charged for any additional sauce of any sort (we ordered chicken tenders so naturally, we thought a dipping sauce would be a part of the meal). The happy hour menu only works at the bar. We moved to the bar so that the happy hour menu could be honored, but the bartender was not happy and not enthused. The service was slow and attitude was not nice. Will not be returning. read more

I arrived at Inyo about ten minutes before my friend did. There was no hostess to be found, so I asked a waiter if It was seat yourself. He directed me to the hostess station where I waited for at least 7 minutes. I was a little annoyed that it looked like everyone was standing around but no one wanted to help me to a table. I had a groupon for this place. Which was pretty cool because the food was satisfying. I didn't care much for the shrimp lettuce wraps though, there was a sweet sauce with a bad after taste. I'm used to Pf Chang's lettuce wraps which I love, these were honestly kinda nasty. I didn't even finish them. The sushi was pretty good especially the California rolls I loved them. The shrimp tempura was decent I've had better and the philly rolls were decent. I did thoroughly enjoy the fried rice. They had a great selection of unique cocktails and the ambience was groovy and modern. The service was good. I may come back especially for the California rolls and fried rice they were outstanding in my opinion. The reason for the missing star is the lettuce wraps and the bad after taste and the shrimp tempura wasn't the best. It's all about what you order I suppose and everyones tastes are different. I wanted to like this place, but won't be back. The atmosphere, presentation and service was great. Unfortunately, the food did not match, especially at the fairly high price on items. The food's not bad, it just not that great. Miso, at $5 a small bowl, was just miso. Lettuce wraps were so so. Sushi was ok, but the smallest roll I've seen. My daughter's calamari was blah. That's all we had, and with tip the bill was over $50. Not a great value. Maybe I could give them 3 stars for the non food side, but food is why you go to a restaurant. read more
