So, I used Yelp's virtual assistant to help me find local locksmiths. I got several responses. Out of all the responses, Avi from Sunshine Lock & Safe saved the day by just messaging me instructions on a way to unhook the latch. Thank you, Avi!!! And, yes, I admit I stuffed it last time I had it open, so now that the safe is open, I'm going to make sure it's not stuffed before I lock it this time! AWESOME Service!! My…read moreLiberty safe manual tumbler dial combo stopped working after 14 years and I couldn't open it. I called Liberty Safe and asked what to do. They told me a locksmith with the right tools can drill under the dial, line up the tumblers, open the safe and epoxy the hole up afterward. Not looking forward to the epoxied hole, I called Sunshine Lock & Safe to see if they could open the safe and fix the dial combo problem. Avi the owner said no problem and we set up an appointment. The following day he called to let me know he was on his way and he arrived according to plan. He was able to get into the safe without drilling and upon checking the dial combo parts inside he showed me that one of the tumbler disks was actually falling apart. He offered me the option of replacing the dial lock with an electronic lock which I readily accepted. Avi has a LOT of experience, has done many high end jobs with commercial-level safes and knows his trade extremely well. I was an aerospace engineer for over 40 years and I had a lot of questions while watching him work. He's very personable, doesn't mind talking about his trade and has a vast amount of experience which he didn't mind sharing. Very interesting man and clearly an expert at his trade! Spending just over $300 for Avi's new electronic lock, his effort and quick training on the new lock operation was money WELL spent, when considering spending just over $2000 to replace the old safe including removal & disposal.

I needed 4 copies, and when I got home with them, I tried them all, and they all worked - sort of - I had to really push to get them in the lock all the way, and then I had to really YANK the ring attached to the key to pull them out. Each key was like that. I don't know why, and I don't want to go all the way back to the place to get them done over. Maybe the young guy didn't sand them down (or whatever they do after they cut the key). He also thought I only wanted one, when I handed him an email that said I needed four, so he had to do the other 3 after he thought he was done.

I researched a bunch of brands online, but the nature of the metalwork on the door turned this into more job than I could handle. I reached out to a few locksmiths in town, some that I've had good experiences with in the past, but everyone had the same line: you'll need a metalsmith to make alterations to the door in addition to locksmith services. Turns out Alex is also a metal worker, and has a lot of experience working with San Francisco security gates. He talked me through what he referred to as a "light industrial" setup, explaining the benefits and lower energy consumption of this solution. I didn't really need a wi-fi compatible smart lock, just a dependable keypad lock that I could easily set up and add/delete individual codes on. He answered on my first call, took the time to explain what would work best for my situation, offered free advice on a second door that saved me from having to do a retro-fit, got me on the schedule only a few days after I called, and did the installation in under an hour. Will definitely call Alex/Nova Locksmith again, and highly recommend them.
