We were told by the salesperson that the floors we purchased could be sanded 2-3x which was a major factor in our decision to purchase. Four years later, every contractor we've contacted refuses to sand them, saying it would damage or ruin the floors. This is not a minor detail, it directly affects the longevity and appearance of the product. Had we been given accurate information, we never would have bought them and gone with a different option. Their sales pitch was extremely misleading and needs to be updated to reflect the current market reality of these floors - aka contractors will refuse to touch them. Our property manager met with someone at California Carpet, who took a bunch of notes and photos. Then they came out to do the work and only completed a fraction of what was requested. Plus the section they did replace was done wrong. They inspected my job and gave me a quote and then tried to bill me for more than their bid based on some carpet tack "missing" and other BS. That's on them to figure out when they bid it. They don't get to just bid it without doing their due diligence and put all the risk on the client.. Furthermore when I spoke to the foreman he said there were no issues and the install went great. We were very happy with CA Carpet when they installed our carpet. Unfortunately, the product was awful. After just a few years it showed terrible wear patterns. We tried all their suggestions for dealing with the problem, and finally invoked the replacement warranty. We needed to get a custom carpet for a room that had unique dimensions. After looking at options we landed with California Carpet in SF. We went in person and had good help in the store and they let us take samples home to find the right material to use. They gave us an estimate, that ended up being a few hundred less then the final cost. The communication was difficult, even leaving a message and getting a reply was not easy. This is something they should work to improve for their business. The service people did a good job, showed up on time and we are happy with the end product. I do not say this lightly: the company installed nearly 5,000 sq. feet of carpet in our offices in San Francisco's Union Square and it has never been right since they installed it. The carpeting is coming up, fraying and tearing, causing significant safety issues as well as making the carpeting look shabby. California Carpet refuses to fix the problem. That's right: they won't fix, even for a fee, the crappy work they initially did for us. Avoid making the mistake we made: don't use this disreputable company which does NOT warranty, guarantee, or fix its own mistakes and crappy workmanship. Go elsewhere for quality and service. PSA.  Do not use California Carpet!  All the negative reviews are true.  They told my partner and I that the work would take 3 days and now it's been more than a month and will not be completed for another 2 months b/c, Jack Cantonese, refused to order enough wood for the job.  When I went to inspect the work with my partner, Jack was extremely condescending and rude.  Not only was he 30 mins late to the mtg to discuss the delays, he couldn't find the Condo building that spans the entire block on Sutter.  He also demanded a parking spot. This is San Francisco.  Contractors find their own parking. Once inside the home, Jack disrespected my partner and I and tried to force us to take damaged wood that was already installed.   The installers were also completely unprofessional and caused many issues with our HOA.  Using the resident luggage cart to move their work supplies and scratched up the newly installed floor (the small portion they completed) with the luggage cart. Jack Cantonese repeatedly told us while pointing at his clip board that all of these delays were in our contract and we had no other choice but to wait.   Now we cannot move into our home and mortgage still needs to be paid along with rent.   DO NOT EVER USE THEM.  They were also the most expensive quote.  They tell customers of their superior quality and work but that is all lies. I was nervous going to California carpet because of some of the negative reviews, but I knew they had been in business for decades so I decided to give it a try. I ordered two things from them, both custom. One was a stairway runner and the other was a sisal area rug. On both items, I needed quite a bit of advice and customer service and I was impressed with my sales person, Nattha. Her expertise was over the top and her energy outstanding. She ran all over the display room, pulling down different carpet samples and unrolling huge pieces of material. She knew everything about all the different kinds of grass and fiber rugs. We ended up deciding to get an artificial sisal since we have a dog. It really looks identical. She let me take home any samples, with no rush to return them or any deposit. When I made my order, I was shocked to discover that they were both installed within two weeks! Luis, the installer, was fantastic as well. Totally professional and easy to work with. The only things they had to move were the heavy items. A, simple thank you from the installers, would have been nice and appreciated. I have high praise for California Carpet. Not only do they offer a great selection, including very well priced quality remnants of all sizes, but the service is outstanding. We bought a very large wool remnant for our 25x13 ft living room years ago and it still looks as good as it did then. A few years later we needed a runner for our stairway. In addition to having just the right color and pattern for our craftsman home, they came out to measure the stairs before we ordered. And the good service doesn't stop once you buy. When a visiting cat turned the stair runner into a scratching post, I called our salesman, Gregory Bagett, who arranged for their installer to come to the house to fix the problem. I've wandered into California Carpet several times in the past and never bought anything, because the price points were above my budget at the time. However, I have always been aware that they carry a pretty decent selection at competitive prices, so when I needed to purchase an area rug recently and was in a hurry (the rug I'd ordered online showed up the wrong color, and I needed a rug stat, because a big, heavy bed was going to be placed on top of it the next day!), I decided to wander in and see if there might be anything that I both could afford and liked. And I was pleasantly surprised to find a really gorgeous 7'6" x 9'6" area rug on sale for $695! It was much nicer quality than the less-expensive-but-wrong-color one I'd purchased online, and the best part was that I was able to see it in person before purchasing it!! The middle-aged gentleman who assisted me with my purchase was friendly, helpful, and easy to work with. After I picked out the rug, he also helped me pick out a non-slip rug pad from a booklet of samples, make my purchase, and arrange for my partner to come pick it up a few hours later. This store is very WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE, with a relatively easy front entrance, and members of the staff immediately make themselves available to assist, if you need anything moved out of the way for increased access. There is a parking lot behind the showroom where you can park your vehicle while shopping and for when you need to load a rug or carpet into your car or truck. That's very handy! The gentleman I worked with said that it was fine if I needed to return the rug in a few days if it didn't work in the room, as long as it wasn't dirty or ruined in any way. That's very reasonable. After all, sometimes you need to try a rug out in the space where it will eventually live before you can make a final decision! We worked with Felix and based on his expertise and advice decided on a solution to soundproofing a studio apartment with carpeting and various underlying materials. We were very clear that we needed something in stock, available and we're working with a deadline which he assured us was possible. We confirmed up till the day before and was assured everything was on schedule. The morning that the installation was scheduled we received a call that there would be a delay due to materials that were not available and ordered. They rescheduled for two days later. A few hours later we received a call from Felix saying that actually the materials were available but that the installer was not comfortable with doing the job and they were canceling. As you can imagine this left us having to start from scratch with the job that we thought was resolved. I don't know how a company can operate with such a disconnect in communication. To get my refund I had to jump through administrative hoops with multiple emails, being shuffled from one desk to another. We will never do business again with Califorinia Carpet. I bought a high quality brand of wood flooring only to be ruined by shabby and poor baseboard installation. David, the salesman, was outstanding, very help, excellent follow-up and great to work with throughout. His management did not support him. But this was all ruined by the baseboards. Today's wood floors are easy to install like putting together LEGO. The real skill is baseboards and simply making the mitre cuts correctly. Unfortunately for me, every single corner cut was off which created wide gaps between the wall and the baseboards. The owner and installation manager tried to explain that it was uneven walls. They must have forgotten that I had baseboards before with NO such gaps. There explanation was insulting as if I didn't know anything. They had no idea the I have installed baseboards before. Even my neighbor, who knows nothing, could see the boards were cut too long. Now, I am faced with hiring a second person just to replace the baseboards. You can buy them here but don't let them install them. read more

After years of being a repeat customer I am so disappointed to have to write this review. I bought a large and VERY expensive carpet/rug from California Carpet that continued to "ball" well after the amount of time the store told me it would as a new carpet. After much communication and time, California Carpet prepared a claim with the vendor/mill. After much more time passed and the mill sent an inspector, the carpet was deemed defective and replaced. I was also told to avoid the high-end and highly regarded brand vacuum cleaner and bought a new one. Again, the balling continued way past the normal break in time. I shared pictures with California Carpets and they told me to give it more time. I did. During this time I was even in the store to purchase luxury vinyl and told the same salesperson of my experience. He told me this line was very problematic. Again I reached out to customer service and was told by Greg not to give up and they would make it right only to have him leave me a voice message several days later saying the warranty expired and the mill could not do anything and the owner said the store would not do anything either. I have since written and called Greg with no response. Unreal that a good customer can just be dismissed. Penny wise and pound foolish that they cannot make this right. Off to court we go. read more

Costco Window Fashion forwarded our query to California Carpets on Oct 19th. 2 days later I get an email from "Greg Maciel" asking me to contact him to set up an appointment ?? - How about calling the customer? I called him and setup an appointment with one of their designers "Vicky Urban", she came over on Oct 31st and took measurements and got back with a quote in about 2 days - things were looking good at this point. I emailed her back on Nov 2nd with some changes and requested her to setup a time to get the contract signed to proceed with the installation. This is when things went south, we did not hear back from her at all, my wife called her and I emailed her again on Nov 4th to get the ball rolling...nothing...no response back, no email, no returned phone call..dead silence At this point (Nov 14th or 15th) I called Greg again to figure out what was going on, he seemed completely disinterested and offered no apology whatsoever, sounded to me like he was doing me a favor by taking my call...in the end he nonchalantly mentioned that he will "try" to reach the designer by phone and look into it......CUSTOMER SERVICE FAIL These guys did not seem to want my approx $3K worth of business.......too bad...their loss... read more

I hired California Carpets to put Brazilian Cherry hardwood floor throughout my 872 square foot condo. During the sales process, Felix couldn't have been more accommodating and said yes to everything. This is not an inexpensive Company, the cost for flooring and underlay was over 12k. My only expectation was quality workmanship. To make a long story short, here were the issues: 1) The condo was completely empty, I hadn't moved in yet - there was a clock radio in the closet that disappeared during the flooring. 2) I came by one night to check on things, there were several empty soda cans and food containers left out and the toilet had been used and not flushed. 3) When the floors were completed, they had big dips in the center of the room and every exterior corner dips down enough that a pencil will roll all the way down it. Felix's response to the above: 1) Let me look into that. His second response "sometimes they help out by throwing out things" hmmmm, thanks guys, but next time throw your soda cans away - not my clock radio. 2) I'm really surprised! They're not even supposed to use the toilet. 3) Well, you know every floor has some dips, it is San Francisco, blah blah blah. His final response "I can't be responsible for every employee's work" At that point, I escalated to someone who COULD be responsible. John came out to see the work and at first, countered everything I showed him with an excuse. I completely understand that floors have dips, California Carpets told me that in advance - then they said, when we pull up the rug, if the floor needs to be evened out we'll call you and talk about the options - that's the part that never happened. In the end, I asked John to answer one question and only one - "Is this quality work?". He said "no" and he would get back to me with a proposal. A couple days later he called to say they would repair/redo the floors at no add'l expense. The floors were re-done the Week of January 22. During the 3 days, beside not being able to use my living/dining room, there were several mishaps - which shocked me since I really thought they'd treat the situation with kid gloves. The 2 biggest ones were 2 workmen walking into my apartment at 8:45, when we had a clear agreement work would begin at 9:30 - unfortunately, I was walking out of the shower as they entered - NOT GOOD. Even after I called John and he said he would make sure it didn't happen again, I arrived home early that evening and the same 2 workmen had not pulled the door shut behind them, so my apartment door had been open for several hours. To sum it up - everything about this was sloppy. The floors were completed yesterday and look & feel much better. At my request, I received a call from Mary Wilson, the owner of the Company. She was very polite, let me know she and her husband bought the business a year ago and were very sorry for the problems. She asked me what would make this seem better and I said she really needed to decide that, not me. She gave me a $1,000 discount - so about 8% - personally, it didn't make me feel a whole lot better about everything, but I guess that's what my time and trouble was worth to Mary. read more

Sadly, they are just not very professional or reliable. I had 1 estimate appointment broken, then the rescheduled appt. was delayed by almost an hour, and after that happened, the salesmen didn't even submit a quote. It was confusing since it was a waste of his time, but it's extremely frustrating to spend that much time and have nothing to show for it. That process aside, they have a wide range of products, but not the best quality and the answers were rather difficult to come by when you asked. Run away as fast as you can! Like some other customers, my experience was good on sales, breathtakingly poor on installation. Like crazy-bad. CC has great materials, friendly and knowledgeable sales staff. They helped me pick out some flooring for an apartment unit I renovated. The material and price were fine. Installation took a very sharp turn for the worse. After no fewer than 10 back and forth calls, I finally got the flooring installed - very sloppily. Not happy at all. Worse, they were supposed to install flooring transitions between different materials in doorways, which I had paid for. I called - at least 10 times. I sent emails - to the sales person, installation department, the sales manager, and the owner. None were returned. I shouted at the sales people on the phone. Finally after more than three months, they reluctantly came to install the thresholds. CC is an incompetently-run business with questionable integrity. Based on my experience, buying anything here is foolish and risky. Take your business elsewhere. read more

I usually try to keep my reviews on the positive but I feel I need to share that the customer service here was some of the worst I have ever experienced in any industry. I found it especially disappointing because it is not every day that I spend thousands of dollars. My business partner and I found some amazing hybrid planks to install in our salon. The material looks good, and it is comfortable to stand on all day which is important in a salon. Once we sourced the material we chose California Carpets to do the job. It took several phone calls just to get a representative to come out and take measurements. That should have been my first sign that there would be problems. Once the measurements were taken it took 2 weeks to get an estimate! We stressed that the work could only be done on the one day a week we are closed and we were assured that all the work could be completed in that time frame. Well....on the first day we were there to open the door for the installers at 9am and they did not show up until after 11am and they only had 2 men on the commercial job. *they were late * the base boards were wrong *the stairs were stained improperly *they did not install proper transition boards The end of my floor had a tripping hazard in the most high traffic area of my salon. I had to lay down some safety tape to make sure my clients did not trip. The installation "manager" came and took a look and some pictures but because the proper piece had not been ordered- we had to wait on materials. That meant coming in another day, and the installers were once again late.... The correct base boards were installed but the stairs were still not done right. The installer decided that staining the skirts to the stairs was "too hard" so he left it a mismatched mess. TOO HARD is really a laughable excuse and so was "we lost track of time". They also left scraps and garbage in my parking area to deal with, and now I still need to hire someone else to finish my staining. Staining the steps was part of my original estimate and we have not been contacted by anyone to rectify or compensate for their lack of service and follow through. I suppose there must be so much business in this city that this is their idea of acceptable customer service. Actually completing the job they were contracted to do would be "too hard". read more

I have to be very concerned about a company that has such mixed reviews on Yelp. I needed some hardwood floor, visited twice, and help was just not available. Costco members be aware! The one and only sales rep will 1. quote you extra on material (18% in my case) 2. Over quote 55 times than actual material cost on accessory part such as molding and quarter round ( my case: $2,300 vs. actual cost $55). 3. Quote 200% on actual labor installation. That makes final quote 3 times over its cost ($9100 vs 2600) including $1820 paying 3rd party contractors. Because we are cost members, we get to pay more, why? I talked to 3 sales and the guy handles costco account quoted highest and you can not get around it because no sales will take your business due to store sale unofficial policy. Do you know how awful it feels to be accused of something you did not do? Or how frustrating to be expected to pay for a damaged floor when you contracted for a perfect job? Here is the (abbreviated) story: I hired California Carpet and did not check Yelp reviews because a friend had used them for refinishing a few years ago; got a very nice job and said the 'dustless' system was great. I won't go in to all of the missed appointments, delays, un-returned calls, etc., that preceded the actual refinishing but they were numerous and similar to what other reviewers have written. The final coats of finish were to be applied on Friday. I called the office to see if my furniture would be replaced on Saturday so that I could make arrangements to be at home (I normally work on Saturdays) when it was replaced. Maria informed me that the furniture could not be replaced until Monday (my day off); that I should only wear socks when walking on the floor, etc., etc. When I got home on Friday the floors seemed quite dry but I was very careful when walking on them. Saturday the installer called asking if I wanted the furniture replaced. I questioned him at length about the advisability of doing so and he assured me that the floor was sufficiently dry so I authorized him to go ahead and move the furniture even though I would not be at home. When I arrived home Saturday evening I found a large and deep dent in the middle of my living room floor--the finish was not scratched but dented as if someone had dropped something very blunt and heavy--and a scratch the length of the floor in my study. The bill for the balance of the work was on my dining table. I called California Carpet promptly on Monday morning to report the damage. I was asked to send photos, which I did. More than a week later Craig, the estimator, came to see the damage. He told me he would discuss the situation with the owner, Mary, and get back to me. Here is the transcript of the call I received from Craig a few days later: "I talked to the owner and everything, you know, I kind of don't know what to say but I'm going to come out there, though, and fix the bedroom area (study) myself by scuffing it up and feather finishing in some finish, you know, as a courtesy from California Carpet here, she feels, you know, I don't know exactly what happened out there, but she feels that our installers did not do the damage, and I know you feel that we did, and I apologize for the mis-convenience (sic) on this but give me a call back though and I can discuss a little more with you . . ." So I am condescendingly being offered a "courtesy" repair of the scratch and expected to pay the full amount for the damaged floor. Do NOT use California Carpet to refinish your floors! read more

We had personalized service from both Felix and Rose at California Carpet in San Francisco. Because of the virus, they had to juggle all their installations. In order to fulfill their promises, they hired a crew who worked all day on a Sunday costing the company quite a bit of over time. They went to extraordinary means in order to install the carpet on a timely basis. The men who worked in our home were simply wonderful. Professional, personable and a delight. We had a terrible experience with Abbey carpet - disgusting results that had to be replaced twice. Never again. We highly recommend meeting Felix and Rose. The sales staff was really helpful, samples were sent from various manufacturers and we were able to pick the carpet that we wanted. Horrible sales people! I would strongly advise against using this store for any flooring needs. The sales staff and manager here lack professional customer service skills. I purchased vinyl flooring for my remodel. I needed to change the product color after I received it when colors in the remodel changed...this was a couple weeks beyond their return policy. I called the guy who took care of my order on the phone and asked him if it would be possible to exchange for another vinyl flooring color. He said "SURE" bring the product in and he would take care of it. This is where the circus run around begins. He told me he would be there that evening and of course he was not. The manager told me that he told her I could not exchange it, OK well then why is he making me drag all that product back in? The next several weeks consisted of snotty attitudes, changing stories which were left with "we will call manufacturer and see what we can do". After 3 weeks of no call and my product still there I went to pick it up and will now sell it on my own. This was an amount of $200 that they gave me this huge run around over. I can respect a return/exchange policy. I have no problem with that. What I have a problem with is people who lack professionalism and lie to cover themselves to the owner of the company. Covered in quality. Two months ago the topic of refinishing hardwood floors and installing carpet would have been about as interesting as the results of the ballgame or American Idol. In other words not very. Then you become a homeowner. Things quickly change. California Carpet was my first and as it turns out only destination. My sister came along that initial visit. I wanted a trusted female opinion on the carpet. Michael Coughlin greeted us with a friendly, informed and helpful demeanor. He was my guy throughout the process. Answering my questions. Providing the quotes. Calling to make the jobs were well done. Which they were. Floor guy wasted no time getting to work during the two day window before I had to move in. Carpet team had the old one out and new one installed in less than three hours. Granted I'm new at this so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Instead trust the painters (never seen a floor refinished so well and with zero mess) and my sister and friends (loved the carpet). Ballgames and American Idol still lack interest. Talking floors and carpets is a new passion. As is sending everyone to California Carpet. read more
