My 8 year old son fired a .22 caliber rifle for the first time today. I consider myself an avid shooter and responsible EDC person but have always kept my activities separate from my son. I wanted him to be introduced to firearms use by adults other than myself who share my passion. My thanks goes out to all the staff and members of Sunset Mountain who provided this program today! It's a much larger range than I'm used to, which could get really dangerous, but they have a system of lights and intercoms that seems to keep everyone safe. We just shot at the far end-- intended for short-distance pistol firing. The targets are unlike those I've ever seen... you actually have to pick up a 10ft plank of wood and drag it on to the range to your desired distance. I was really glad I had two men with me to help out... I would probably still be there trying to get them to fit into the little wooden slots. There is an indoor range too, which is a nice touch, but I didn't manage to get in there. Note on bathrooms... use the ones you have at home. Outhouse doesn't even begin to describe them.

If I have to exclude everybody else, fine, John is awesome! He makes amazing coffee. But if I was going to be realistic, I would have a list of their entire staff in this review. My biggest complaint may be the AC in the sales section, it tends to get way too warm during the hot days, which is disappointing. The range experience is great, when I ask for something exciting to try, they always have an honest answer and something new to try out. Additionally, their RSOs are awesome when on the range, always offering their time and suggestions. It's great having an expert provide solicited advice. The club is also great, they are really making the best out of their space and offering. I do wish that they would hold non-club special events in the event space rather than the lounge, but to be honest, most members are hanging out in the range rather than upstairs in the lounge, so it spends a lot of its time with low occupancy, which is great for members that want to get some work done between range visits. I look forward to trying out their outdoor ranges, they just opened up to members and I hope to try them out soon!

One day when using the indoor range by myself there was no one else in the room. Bob Blake started pounding on the windows and told me to come out now and when I did he freaked out on me saying I am breaking all kinds of rules and said I pointed a gun at him. I never pointed a gun at him and I didn't even know he was in the building. Bob suspended me and took my card and told me to leave, the range has video cameras so I requested to see the video. The club refused to show me the video and instead of returning my membership after a month like they said they would they permanently banded from the property. I have been a hunter safety instructor for 7 years and I teach handling of firearms so I know I was handling them properly. Places like the Pioneer club who freak out over everything is why guns get band, the club has 26 pages of rules that are nearly impossible to remember all the different rules on all the ranges and if I was doing something wrong Bob could have simply corrected me and I would have been happy to comply, instead he freaked out and now I am permanently banned from the club property cause Bob Blake lied and said I pointed a gun at him when he was not even in the room with me. The also refused to give me back my membership fee for which I had just paid for and didn't even get to use the range. People like Bob is why the anti gun people are gaining ground, they freak out over everything and go to the extreme. I hope the range closes down.

Unfortunately, its membership has grown rapidly in the last several years and membership has hit its cap. I still would recommend trying to come with a member or shoot a match here. I am a new shooter and have been welcomed with open arms. Everyone is patient and enjoys helping get new shooters orientated. I just walked in to a bullseye match with a .22 pistol and was able to shoot that night after a 5 min briefing - it's really that easy. If I had more time to shoot I would try to compete in more disciplines. There is a wide range of talent at the competitions, but there is always room for new shooters, youngsters, women, and anyone looking just to have some fun (it's really not intimidating at all). You do not have to be a member to compete and it's not that expensive, so check the website and give something a try (the calendar is updated regularly). The range is one of the safer I've ever heard of. There is a through application process with a background check and multiple orientation sessions. Everyone is familiar with the range rules and follows them - I haven't seen anything unsafe happen, as most of the shooters are experienced and professional. Family and friends are welcome as well - members can pay $2 to bring a dependent or $10 to bring a friend. You often see parents shooting with their kids, which is nice. In sum, this is a great club for any kind of shooter - there's something for everyone here, highly recommended.
