I never write reviews on Yelp even though I use it often but am compelled to this time after an exceptional meal at Inka Trails in Claremont. But it was more than the food; it was the service that made it so memorable. Our family had just arrived in Claremont for the first time; didn't know the area and were starving. Saw Inka Trails on Yelp and thought it looked good but it was about to close in 30 mins so we called to check if we could still make it. The lady who answered the phone was warm and welcoming, telling us to come on by. What followed was some of the most delicious food I've had, on par with Michelin-starred restaurants I have had the pleasured to dine at in Bangkok, San Sebastian, Paris...It was home cooking with the best ingredients - you can taste the freshness of the fish and vegetables and the fragrance of the herbs. Highly recommend the fish rice soup, the fried fish and fish stew in tomato broth. It was serious one of the best meals we have had. So the food was 5 stars, but what made me write this review was the owner Patty. She was warm and gracious. Asked us what brought us to Claremont and when we told her we were there to tour colleges, she was kind to share her insights on the school, experiences with the students, told us about safety and transits in the area. Remember this was all after the restaurant was already scheduled to be closed for the evening. We were never rushed and Patty was sincere and kind. As a frequent traveler and woman in business, I appreciate that. The experience was a highlight of our college visits and I hope to return to Inka Trails for another spectacular meal soon in the near future. read more

I had the pleasure of dining at this small, family-owned Peruvian restaurant yesterday, and it was a gem! The parking lot is behind the restaurant, and the entryway is a bit narrow, so I'd recommend bringing a smaller car if you can. We arrived just as a party of 10 walked in, and the waitress was thoughtful as she suggested we order before they did to make sure we'd get our food in time. We started with the empanadas (beef and spinach) that the waitress recommended, and they did not disappoint. The green sauce they came with has a nice kick. It was spicy but perfectly balanced. So good that I asked for another to go with my meal. They were attentive and friendly. It almost felt like I was eating at their family dinner table. BTW I am Peruvian, and I know how Peruvian Food tastes. - To begin with the Fish ceviche was kind of fishy tasting and locked of flavor. - The pieces of fish needed to be cut thinner not like big chunks. - I don't know if they only use fresh lemons or if they mix some other liquid for the ceviche juice... because the Ceviche juice it was watery and pretty citric not the crispy scent of fresh lemons that you experience at other Peruvian restaurants, - The red Rocoto sauce was runny & watery, same with the green sauce. I've never seen it so watery. - My husband's Lomo Saltado had zero flamed flavor for a "Peruvian Lomo Saltado" flaming the meat as you cook it is a key ingredient for flavor! - The beef was not tender, making it hard to chew & was cut in thin small pieces. - The potato fries were half raw and half cooked, kind of saggy - No wonder why on a Thursday around 6:30 PM when I walked in the restaurant to pick up my food, the Restaurant was empty there was only one tourist couple the rest of the tables were empty. I was craving for Lomo Saltado and Inka Trails showed up on yelp. The restaurant is situated between a gas station and a bigger strip mall complex. The restaurant has its own parking lot in the rear. It was some what hard to find the restaurant since it was hidden between the gas station and the italian restaurant in the bigger complex. The interior has a nice decor. The color of the painted walls were unqiue and suits the interior concept. However, the lomo saltado was disappointing. The beef was small thin strips and wasnt juicy nor as tender as other lomo saltado dishes that i had before. The server forgot to bring the green sauce and I had to ask for it. Speaking of the green sauce, it was watery and not as pungent as other green sauce that i had before. There was no free bread when waiting for your main entree to be served. I didn't order any other dishes, so i cant give an opinion there. If you want lomo saltado, look elsewhere. read more

Love this restaurant! The food is always delicious, and the service is quick, attentive, and gracious. Decor is lovely, and the ambient music is at just the right loudness level. The restaurant is in a really weird location, tucked right next to a Shell gas station, but it really is some of the best Peruvian food around. When you go, you should take the smallest car that you can, because parking is very tight. read more

I've been coming here on and off for almost 20 years. It used to be the only Peruvian restaurant around this area. There are a few more now, but it's still one of the better ones. They updated their interior over the years and have managed to keep the food quality relatively constant, which is not easy. The aguadito soup is one of my go-tos and great soul food for cold days. The lomo saltado is ok. The bistec on the tallarin verde looks a bit grey, but the flavor and texture are good. Service is a bit sluggish, but that seems to be a theme at other Peruvian restaurants as well. Overall, an ok experience. read more

I came here with my brother one day after work and saw that there was a Peruvian place nearby. The place is easy to drive past, it's near the Stater Bro plaza. I chose to get the aguadito ($10), which is a chicken broth based soup with chicken, onions, peas, cilantro, and rice. Very flavorful broth and a good mount of chopped chicken in it. Their chicharron de calamares ($15) is good too, it's fried squid with tartar sauce and criolla sauce. The batter was not too thick and it was crunchy. The little salad that came with it was good too. Their chicha morada ($4) is great too, a purple corn based drink with pineapple and chunks of green apple. My brother chose to get the lomo saltado ($16) which is sliced beef in a soy sauce with french fries, onions, and tomatoes with rice. I was very happy to find out that Inka Trails finally reopened after having been closed for years that I jumped at the idea of going back. Sadly, the food is not the same as it used to be. This was my family's favorite Peruvian restaurant back in the day. However, my parents and I didn't feel the same the times we went back once it reopened. Very nice place once we found it. It is nestled between a gas station and a small shopping mall. The driveway into the parking lot is very narrow so be careful when you go in. There is one driveway to go in and another to exit the parking lot. The decor is different with red walls, seating separately from table to tables. Good for large families. Comfortable for waitresses to go in and serve and take plates out. The appetizers we ordered were enough for two- the sampler. A three tier of calamari fritto with ted onion and tartar sauce, the potatoes with a white sauce on top a 2/3 of a tiny hard boiled egg were delicious. The fish ceviche was plenty and very nicely seasoned with a mild hot sauce. We also order chicha morada sweet and refreshing with little pieces of green and red apples, reminded me of Sangria. For the dish priced at $23, Saltado de Pollo, I anticipated a larger portion of chicken and less rice drenched in soy sauce. The chicken was sparse and consisted of small, tiny pieces. It was certainly not worth the price. The fries were extremely soggy. The ají verde was different -watery and lacking spice, not even a hint of it. Seriously the best food I've had in a bit. Don't be detoured but the difficult to see driveway. Having a Entrance/Exit lit sign would be very helpful BTW. I was always wary of not seeing any other customers upon arrival but I'm glad we still went in. My wife had one of their red wines which she enjoyed and I stuck with Inca Cola. We had the empanadas as an appetizer. The Beef is much better than the Spinach/Cheese combo. We both ordered the Loma Saltado which was amazing! We also had their Yuca as a side. This place is so clean it always looks brand new, like they did a new remodel. I've been coming here for years and it's always spotlessly clean. There's a gorgeous mural on the wall that just adds a whole lot of je ne sais quod to the ambiance. The decor is not overwhelming, if you're the type of person who thrives in simplicity and in dinner time conversation, this is the place for you. Service, our server was working the dinner time shift and they are amazing. We asked for an extra serving of yucca Fritas and they took a while to come out. Absolutely excellent food and service, but the ambience leaves a bit to be desired. To enter the parking area, you turn off of Foothill on the west side of the building. Its a busy street, and you immediately have to squeeze down an EXTREMELY narrow alleyway-chute; I was terrified the whole way that I'd scrape the side of my car. Once I made it to the parking area, all four spots were taken and the harrowing experience was for nothing. Ended up parking near the Stater Bros instead. Cafeteria-style tables perch inside didn't match the aesthetic, and the space was glazed concrete in a stucco room with an exposed-beam stucco ceiling, so it was ECHOEY. There was an extra-large party celebrating graduation to one side, and their seventeen-top (among them were three kiddos), it was nearly impossible to carry on conversation. Building issues and ambience aside, the food was utterly scrumptious and I truly can't wait to come back. The soup was so hearty and comforting, the Saltado was spot-on and all the right proportions, but lemme talk to you about the fish ceviche - HOLY CRUMBS, IT WAS DELICIOUS. Fish was so so fresh, flavors balanced - best I've ever had. Onions hung around on my breath for a full day following, but #worthit. So SO pleased to have this added to our Claremont dining routine. I don't understand the high reviews Restaurant is very dark, with blinding spotlights over each table. Everything is brown and unimaginative. Food is very bland. The chicken soup consisted of rice boiled in chicken broth with cilantro. It had a few pieces of (separately) boiled, bland chicken breast on top. The ají sauce was watered down. Empanadas and chicha morada were good, but very expensive. Husband didn't even finish his plate of pasta. Beware of the parking lot, as it's very narrow. I love their peruvian food! Pollo Saltado, con sus papas y arroz is sooooo good! Prices are pretty high, but if you want to treat yourself to a tasty meal, I would recommend.
