IndyHumane is the B E S T place in Indiana. I recently lost my dog of 8years, and I came here looking to adopt a puppy! The staff was very welcoming and greeted you and asked if you needed help. First thing I said was I was interested in Bacon and he was already out in the lobby. I took him home immediately. Best puppy I could ever ask for. Very healthy. Going back today to get the rest of his shots! Shots are only $20 a piece with some things a little pricier. Since my initial review, my son and I have went thru the process of becoming official fosters for Indy Humane. Our experience has been so positive that I wanted to update my review to shine a light on their amazing foster program and veterinary staff. Jessica Kanalos invited my son and I to attend her neonatal kitten care class, because she knew of our involvement and obsession with orphaned neonatal kittens. Her class was so informative and we learned a lot, even after years of caring for orphaned kittens ourselves. When she spoke about the support that Indy Humane offers their fosters, I wanted in. This Fall will make 5 years that I've been involved in rescue. I've been frustrated in the past, mostly, with lack of resources and veterinary care with my previous partnerships. Since joining Indy Humane, we've been really impressed with the level of care that our fosters receive. We've had a medical emergency with one kitten and medical issues with a sick foster, and everything was handled quickly. Even an after hours emergency. We're also given all the food, medication and supplies that we need for our fosters and picking up more supplies, as needed, is easy. Most times, when we go in to pick up and drop off, my son and I watch as that doorbell to drop off another abandoned pet rings, and rings, and rings. Every time, I am in awe of everyone working with me and around me. It is clearly a high stress job that does not stop. But everyone that I've encountered has been a pleasure to work with, friendly, helpful and compassionate. My son and I both are definitely impressed with how Indy Humane runs their foster program and cares for the animals in their care. I am very thankful for IndyHumane! Not long ago I was driving home and noticed that a dog was running near a busy two way street. I pulled over and picked him up, not wanting the poor guy to get hit. He still had a collar and leash on. I reached out to a few shelters and they made the process of taking him in hard, but IndyHumane didn'! I took him in, they checked him for a chip and then told me that if the owner didn't claim him within 3 days they'd put him up for adoption. I write this review as a recent adopter for my furry friend Jack. I won't lie - finding a dog is a stressful process, especially when the dog you want keeps getting adopted. Again and again. It can be discouraging, but I like that they keep things updated live on their website with adoptable animals. It really benefits the people that have the time to take off whenever and get there before they open to stand in line. Finally, after a few visits, I found Jack. He was so happy to see me for the first time - I knew he was the perfect match. The two volunteers helped me and were very happy and encouraging. After some time visiting and playing with him outside, I then began the adoption process. It took about 75 minutes or so. Honestly, I was very unsatisfied with my adoption counselor. She was very intimidating, and I felt like she was almost trying to scare me away from adopting Jack, given his very short interaction with a dog that they attempted to interact him with. I mean, c'mon, if you were given up, transferred to a new city and then thrown into a random play area with a random dog, wouldn't you be a little stand off-ish too? As Kitty B mentions in her review, the counselor honestly made poor Jack seem like he was going to be the meanest dog ever and that is far from the case. He's just a very shy, timid, stressed out pup that was overwhelmed and not ready to be socialized when he was forced to at the behavior analysis. Some of the counselor's suggestions were just almost too much for me too - she suggested I never tell my dog "no." ....what? My one issue I have with them is never answering the phones. I work in nonprofits, so I get that times can get busy, but it makes me a bit frustrated when they use the excuse of being a nonprofit to never, literally never, answer their phones. Not a good enough excuse for me - especially given how many amazing volunteers they have. I appreciate the services and products that they offer as well. I'm happy that they're available and that their mission is so important in the community. Customer service could use a quick brush up. Anywho, the HSI is a good place to find your furry friend, and I hope to use their clinics in the future too. The volunteers were all very helpful. read more

I first fell in love with Indy Humane after reading the sassy and adorable biographies of the adoptable animals on their website (love their digital presence!). I knew from the first day I stepped foot in there that it's a great place to volunteer! All volunteers are required to attend an info session (if you can't make it, they send you the info via email), fill out an application, attend a basic training (general info + shelter tour), an intro to shelter felines or canines course, a shadow day, and a buddy day (canine volunteers only). The process from start to finish takes 3-4 weeks before you can start volunteering independently. Everyone I have interacted with here has been incredibly kind and dedicated to the shelter. Indy Humane truly values its volunteers and appreciates their hard work! I've been really impressed with the communication regarding steps of training - they have it down to a science. Know going into it that there is a $15 training fee and they ask volunteers to donate 8 hours/month (most go in at a regular day/time for 2 hours/week), so if you can't make that commitment regularly it might not be a good fit. They want their volunteers to be active in the shelter! The Humane Society cares for 200-300 animals at any time, and invests $600-$800 per animal during their time at the shelter. They are a private non-profit and rely on donations! These animals are in a high-stress situation and are in need of a loving home, and Indy Humane does everything in their power to socialize the animals and provide them top-notch care. Every animal undergoes a behavioral and medical assessment prior to hitting the adoption floor. Adoption fees range from $0 (FIV+ cats) to $250 (puppies). An adoption counselor will do their best to find a good match for you and your lifestyle - after all, these animals are looking for their fur-ever homes (you'd be surprised how many are adopted as littles ones and returned after a few years because owners can no longer care for them.) I genuinely look forward to donating my time and socializing the cats once a week. It is such a positive place and I felt confident day one that I was prepared to begin volunteering independently! I love Indy humane. After months of scouring the inter webs looking for a dog (I was new to Indy and didn't know about Indy humane) I decided to check for places near me that sold dogs. Several friends of mine told me about the importance of not shopping at a pet shop so I ended up looking for shelters. I'd been really watching Indy humane's website for a while when a dog named Dobby showed up in May. Medium dog, white, young, looked sweet as could be. The next day (Saturday) my boyfriend and I head there a little after they opened to check out this pup. Unfortunately, when we found him his papers were gone meaning someone was already online to adopt him. I was devastated, especially after meeting him and seeing how sweet he was. My boyfriend convinced me to look around a bit and I did but my heart wasn't in it. Then I see this timid sweet tiny little thing. She was so shy when we took her out of her cage but she took a quick liking to my boyfriend, snuggling up next to him. I fell in love. We took her home that day and now she is my fur baby and I love her so much. She lives a very full life now, complete with plenty of treats and toys. This Christmas was our first one together and she was spoiled by mom, dad, Santa, grandma and grandpa and her aunt. She makes everyday so much better. Best. Decision. Ever. I know this is a beloved organization in Indianapolis for good reason, but my review may differ as it is more critical than the majority. I respect their mission and vision in saving the lives of dogs and cats, pairing them with the right families and in offering services that make owning an animal more affordable while supporting them in order to save more animals. They offer low cost vaccines, a spay/neuter clinic, a membership dog park, volunteer opportunities, a foster program, even a pet loss support group if needed. All wonderful things! They're lacking in customer service, adequate or accessible information on the adoption process and transparency in business practices. In order to adopt a dog you must go through a very long process for which you have no chance to prepare. This makes it especially difficult if you have a family, if one person works a traditional work week or you work/live in a different part of Marion County. It caused us a lot of frustration and inconvenience because, had we known, we would have known what to expect. They seem to have a good behavior department. The young woman approached us with in a caring and genuine manner, she was forthright with how the dog intro would go, we appreciated that very much. The dog we finally adopted was much better behaved than we were led to think based on his initial internal assessment and cautions from their counselors. None of the jumping, snatching treats from hands or having a play style that's too forward, ever happened. Not sure if the behavior department gentled him down, if they were overly cautious in his evaluation or if he just reacts really well to our family and dog. Probably a combination of all three. He's been a polite, potty outside, no jumping or snatching, certified Good Boy Dog. For all their mission-based services and compassion to animals, there are some who interact with patrons with a very poor attitude. It's like having a doctor with no bedside manner. Many of the workers seem as unaware of how things go as we were. Not all, but enough to make it noteworthy. Some act suspicious of you, which makes the interaction sour. Some react in a condescending way over anything you say. Few give direct answers. Many give contradictory information. We were also scolded a few times about violating rules we were not aware of, due to inaccessible information and policies. Again, had we known or had it been posted in an easily viewable way, we would act accordingly. With that said, their adoption fees and hours of operation are clearly posted and easy to find. I won't go into each incident, but I will provide some useful tips on the adoption process for a dog: It's a process that can take up to a few days to complete There's a lot of waiting around If you have children, be prepared for the waiting Processes and rules are nebulous yet completely inflexible If you bring your current dog for an intro, they cannot wait in the car Even if you fall in love, it really could take a few days and a few visits to finally get to adopt You face the risk of losing your preferred dog due to inflexible practices You might have to put off plans and errands for a couple days In short, there are some standout aspects of this organization, but they do make it unnecessarily difficult and complicated. I know they want to home these animals with good people and that makes them conservative in their approach. But done to this measure is a disservice to the patrons and the dogs. read more

We have used this shelter for vaccinations in the past and have always been very satisfied. We recently took in a mother cat and her 4, 3 month old kittens. We didn't realize that she had become pregnant again already and she just gave birth last week to 8 kittens, which we can not keep. We have reached out several times to the shelter for help in finding a foster home, but have never received a response. I now understand why people just leave pets there in the middle of the night. I understand that resources are stretched, but take the phone number and email off the website if your not able to provide service. read more

I have been to the shelter three times for the same dog. They fill the kennels with unadoptable dogs and tell you to watch the internet to see if they are available. There is no way to put a hold or deposit. Today the dog was on the internet as 'adoptable'. I do not live close. I took my dog for a meet-up. At first, they told me I needed an appointment for the two dogs to meet. This was never told to me on my prior visits. I was told I needed to wait for a supervisor to approve the meet-up, so I sat and waited. I filled out the adoption application. When she finally got to me, after many interruptions, she asked me if I was the one waiting to see the dog. Then she tells me the surgery for a neuter went badly and that he was in the ICU until at least Friday. I inquired if I would have to do the same thing as I did today, and she replied yes and that the dog would go out on a first come first served basis, meaning I would have to be there at 12:00 waiting for the doors to open again, and I would have to fill out an application again. I told her it was stupid that his picture was online. I had driven to meet him, based on their policies. I was even willing to pay the ridiculous $250.00 adoption for a stray that they didn't even know the breed or history. I won't go back! read more

Heartworm test, vaccines (including the canine flu vaccine), and heartworm preventative for both dogs cost less than had I taken one dog to my vet! My dogs were at ease. My one dachshund has rolling veins so it was a challenge for the blood test - they were wonderful! Not a peep out of my dog! Although we have not adopted an animal here, we have brought our in laws here to potentially adopt a dog. This shelter is one of the nicest shelters I've visited. Their dog park outside and trails are well kept. Not to mention great for dogs currently at the shelter to get a chance to be walked and play. The staff are super helpful and kind. Their low cost vaccine clinic is AMAZING and a great way to update your pets vaccines but for way less than a typical vet (but I still recommend to have a regular vet for full annual check ups). They also offer heartworm meds that are very discounted. We take our 5 dogs here for annual shots and I can't praise them enough for this service. I attended their 2015 Mutt Strut fundraiser and was blown away. What a great concept and even in rain hundreds if not thousands of dogs attended. read more

I started fostering with IndyHumane after losing my long-time feline friend. IndyHumane is great about making sure you have the knowledge to care for animals that need to be observed in homes prior to adoption. I've been fostering pets that are recovering from surgery and other medical conditions until they are stabilized for their furrever homes. The veterinarian staff has been wonderful about answering medical question and making sure we are on the right road to recovery. I've attended a meet and greet for my fosters and potential adopters to answer questions and the shelter staff has also been fantastic. We had the BEST experience at the Indy Humane low cost vaccine clinic a few weeks ago. Our four-legged friends were past due on all vaccinations because they have not done well the past few years for the vet. So my trepidation is pretty high, but we stick to low cost options because...we'll, it's low cost. In this case, we got WAY more than what we paid for. The tech and doc were so loving, understanding, and friendly with Linus and Lucy. They helped put all of us at ease with their great manner and information. The tech was especially helpful by giving us great information on how to help our dog's joint pain and have cost effective recommendations for dental work, heartworm preventative, and flea/tick protection. I am confident in returning for their annual vaccines, especially if Reann, Amanda, and Katie are working. read more

I visited three different shelters trying to find my new cat! I knew I wanted to adopt an adult or senior cat who wasn't afraid of new people. The Human Society has two areas where the cats are kept - there is a front area where 15-25 or so cats have free roam of some closed in cage/rooms and then they have a back area where the cats are kept individually. The front area was well maintained with adequate litter boxes and places for the cats to hang out...not too many toys or interactive things though. The place where I have some issues though is the back individual cages. This placed smelled bad, worse than any other shelter I've been to including dog shelters. Perhaps this could be because many of the cats had less than a cup of litter available to them? There also wasn't any hand sanitizer available and the employee just dropped us off at the door with no explanation if we could take the cats out or if we had to leave them in. Once we found a cat we loved it was easy to fill out the paper work and take her home with a free wellness exam already set up! I realize that a lot of what I mentioned here (aside from the staffing assistence) is money related though and I urge anyone reading this to consider donating to their local shelters no matter where they are to help make this scary time in an animal's life just a little more comfortable! read more

If you're looking to get involved without the organization but don't necessarily want to come in to volunteer, I highly recommend joining the foster care program. The program coordinator, Jessica, is incredibly helpful and caring, and she has made fostering so many cats, kittens and dogs a truly special experience. Although I have never adopted from HSI, I know many who have and nearly everyone I've spoken with has had nothing but wonderful things to say about the process. The animals are well cared for, and every staff member I've met truly cares. I love the low cost veterinary clinic here! While we have a regular vet, the same vaccines are much cheaper here. Also, in the DiscoverIndy coupon book (found at Kroger, the fair where they are BOGO, the annual Indianapolis Garage Sale where they are also BOGO) the back page has a 50% off all vaccines coupon. Score! Instead of paying $300-ish at the vet, my dog's annual shots and heartworm test are only $25 total! The staff is very kind, especially the vet. She even checks their teeth! This is nice because they won't push something your dog doesn't need. They don't do dental work here but can recommend good places to go. The waiting room is large and clean with a "quiet area" for anxious dogs. You can't make appointments here so certain times are much busier than others. I do NOT recommend going first thing on a Saturday. There's always a crowd lined up to go in and you are stuck waiting for hours. Going in the middle of the afternoon is best. Friday's around 4pm seem to work well for us too (typically in and out in an hour for two dogs). You just have to check in 30 minutes before closing and they have odd hours so check the website. They also sell flea and heartworm prevention meds here but please do your research on these meds, no matter where you plan to buy them - I highly recommend products from onlynaturalpet.com. We have had success with their flea/heartworm prevention items for almost 5 years (much safer for pets, no side effects, and much cheaper). Definitely take your dog here if you want the same vaccines and great care of kind staff without severely overpaying! read more

It was difficult to find. Its a little hidden but its a nice area with a dog park. It was clean and well kept/organized. The one staff member I encountered on the day I went was friendly but not very knowledgable. Best I could tell the website photos are outdated as some pets grew and most are not there. I don't think its real time. Also the day I went almost every dog said NOT AVAILABLE. In fact only 1-2 were adoptable. The rest all said ON HOLD or they were already adopted. It was disappointing. I also think the fees are outrageous. I mean don't you want to get them a home? Every dog has a different fee. Also while the huge fee is on the site the breed is not. Really the website is not the best way. The best thing is to go and be prepared with at least $300.00 and just see what dogs are there the day you go. You may need to go several times as really you just have to be at the right place at the right time with this shelter. I have not been able to adopt yet. Still have hope :) read more

After visiting this "Humane Society" twice in the past 2 days, we now have a wonderful cat from the PetSmart in Noblesville (From Rescue Me RCHS Inc.). I am a current cat owner and lover who has grown up with cats my entire life. Our first visit we arrived 30 minutes before closing and were told we were not allowed to fill out any papers, place any holds, nor visit with any kittens because "We don't start any adoptions an hour within closing." Whether or not this was just a personal choice by the disrespectful girl working that night or the shelter policy, I don't know. Any questions my girlfriend asked her were treated as if she was interrupting this girl's off-topic conversation with a co-worker. But okay, fine. I'll come back tomorrow. So I take a half day off work to get there when they open. Already have application filled out, hand them the kittens info card, wait 20 mins, and sit down with the adoption manager. This is when things really got absurd. From the get-go, she started creating hypothetical scenarios as an excuse for us not to take this kitten home. For one, she seemed shocked that a vet would declaw our current cat and that he hasn't experienced any negative symptoms from it. To her, the only window to declaw a cat would be within the first few weeks and any older is despicable. Please lady, I don't care what your views are on declawing, and don't try to tell me there should be something wrong with my cat you've never seen. Not to mention none of the vets we called for declawing pricing ever told us they wouldn't do it. Get off your high horse. Along with asking a lot of irrelevant questions about our current pet ("Does he roam around the apartment complex at all?" No, he just goes out on the balcony once in a while, I just said that), she latched onto the fact that our current cat is declawed and then assumed that we would be doing it to this kitten, which I told her was wrong multiple times. There are ways to handle a cat with claws. Nevertheless she rolled out this amazing scenario that this cat will be declawed, and since it's older than a few weeks it would become "bitey", which to her is apparently equally as bad. THEN, with this "bitey" cat, she asks if there are children in our future, to which I respond possibly, maybe in 5 years down the road (seriously, I'm not even engaged at the moment, but she doesn't care), and that turns out to be a big no-no for her with a "bitey" cat (surprise, surprise). She then refused to let us take ANY cats home until our current cat had certain tests done (he is up to date on everything) which our vet "should have known to do." We have talked to the veterinarians. You know, the people who go to school for this and take care of animals for a living, and they said this shelter is absolutely ridiculous. I truly feel bad for the animals that are at this shelter. Part of me wishes that all the pets there could be adopted and this place could be shut down, because when you're rejecting cats from being rescued and placed in a loving home as this kitten would have been, and you're trying to run an animal shelter, you have some SERIOUS problems. read more

Whewy! I'm a fan of the Humane Society! I adopted my adorable kitty cat from the Humane Society of Indianapolis about a month ago and it was the best decision I ever made. I'd never been to the shelter before, but when I arrived I immediately felt welcome and excited to be there. It was a clean and happy atmosphere and the animals looked really well taken care of. I'm not a huge dog person, so I guess I can't speak for the dog section, but the cat section was awesome. There were cages for some cats as well as free spaces for the cats to roam. Each animal also had a really great description which included a bit about their personality as well as how old they were and how long they'd been in the shelter. There were also "staff favorites" meaning you could adopt the animals for only $15! Great deals for great little animals. When I decided on Chewy - who is now named Giovanni - the helpful volunteer was able to read me his entire history - both medical and personal. She told me a little bit about his life pre-Humane Society and also all procedures, shots, etc that he'd had while staying at the Humane Society. They have a great little store where you can buy competitively priced pet toys, food, supplies, etc which was a great addition. They also give you one month of pet insurance and have followed up asking me how kitty cat is doing. I'm a huge supporter of adopting from shelters .... not pet stores... so I was glad to support this amazing organization that does so much for Indy's furry friends. This is such an amazing place. I started volunteering out here since I love animals and know that there are fewer cat volunteers than dog volunteers and that cats stay at shelters longer. Indy Humane Society cares so much for dogs and cats. I volunteer as a Feline Friend about 2-4 hours per week, mostly as an individual volunteer and today on behalf of OneBrick.org. OneBrick just launched their Indy chapter and today was dog wash and walk...as well as working with the employees to get the cat enclosures ready for the public. A HUGE thank you goes out to Elite Yelper -- Dana P. -- in launching OneBrick in Indy!! It was a great way to spend the morning. If you love animals and have about 2 hours a week to spare...please consider volunteering your time at the Indy Humane Society...or any rescue group that appeals to you. I've adopted 2 of my dogs from HSI; Both times the process was efficient and fast. They make sure the animals are not going to homes with irresponsible owners. After I rescued a Staffordshire/Pit Mix from Logansport, IN, that had been abused and chained up for the entire 10 months of his life, they took him in once they were sure they had enough room for him, put him through temperament testing, got him neutered and vaccinated. He was adopted within a few days! They are also Partnered in the Indianapolis Animal Welfare Alliance which is a collaborative effort of public and private animal shelters, outreach and rescue groups, and individuals who are dedicated to the welfare of animals in the City of Indianapolis. I can't say enough good things about HSI! We did not adopt our furry kids here, however we utilize many of their services. We have been taking our 2 year old pup to the training classes with Connie and she is AWESOME! You start by attending a (free) orientation class to learn about how the classes run and what type of training she does. This is a great way to see if it is even the place for you and even if it isnt, you still walk away with some great tips! The classes are organized to allow you to only learn what you want to learn. And you come when it is convenient for you. Couldn't ask for more! The dog park at the back of the property is great to let your dog run! For $8 you can check it out on a day pass, or for $65 you can join for the year. There is plenty of room for your pups to run free without fear of them getting loose. The agility area in the center is also great to teach them new things, or a great area for smaller dogs to run around without being trampled by the bigger dogs. All the patrons seem to do a great job of picking up after their dogs and the area is very clean and well-kept. Also recommend the vaccine clinic! They offer all the necessary vaccines to keep your pets healthy at a great cost. They are great with the animals and keep them nice and calm by offering them yummy peanut butter and/or cheese while administering their vaccines. This made my pups quite happy :) If you haven't checked out HSI, you should. They offer so many great services for current and future pet owners. I absolutely love the Indy Humane Society. We've gotten the majority of our pets from the humane society. When it was time to get a fur baby of my own.. I knew I had to come here. I researched for weeks and finally found one online that I wanted to check out. I was a little too late, as the munchkin cat was adopted when I walked in the door. I figured, "Well, I'm already here.." The staff were all friendly and encouraged me to take as much time as I need to find "the one". I visited a few rooms. I was surprised with how clean they all were! Everything is held to a high standard at this shelter. I ended up sitting in a chair and my fur baby, Albie, jumped off a ledge and picked me :). I filled out my paperwork and then worked with a lady through the adoption process. She was very knowledgeable and made sure I understood the financial needs of owning a pet. This is SO important for people to grasp before taking on another member in their home. The process was relatively quick and painless. If you are on the fence about adopting, go look at indy humane. I realized that I hadn't updated this with a review of the Humane Society's attached dog park. What a treasure. I've been a member for more than a year. Even though the park is a bit of a drive for me, I've never regretted signing up. First, the space is huge and well secured. Even the most energetic dog will find it tough to leave with much energy. The grounds are well kept and the fencing is well maintained to make sure no dogs are escaping.The folks who use the park are largely excellent about cleaning up after their dogs and it is rare that you have to step over or around dog poop. In general, the dog owners are a fantastic bunch. Most everyone tries hard to keep an eye on their dog(s) and make sure that the chaos is as contained as possible. At the same time, most folks want to let the dogs be dogs and aren't micro-managing the dogs play. While it's always a good idea to check in with another owner about whether your dog is playing too rough, I've never had anyone be anything but pleasant (even when someone felt my overly hump-prone pooch was being a bit too amorous). Like any dog park, there is a certain amount of behind the scenes intrigue among the regulars but you can participate as much or as little in all of that as you want. One of the best features of the park is a separately fenced off agility area in the middle of the park. It has great obstacles for your dog and also makes a great cool down area for a dog who is getting too feisty. Overall, I highly recommend joining the park. It's a great investment for you and your dog. read more
