Paw Patch Place has been my local vet since I moved to Indianapolis, IN 3 years ago.They have seen 5 of my animals, 3 of which are very difficult. I have a cat terrified of the vet that has been hard to get seen anywhere else that they accommodate. I have a tiny ex breeder dog that is scared of life and they are so patience with her. One of the vet techs even made a pamphlet on anxious dogs that really changed my dog's life! I had a senior with DM & a heart murmur that they were always able to squeeze in when I needed them. They are knowledgeable, reliable, flexible and kind. Great staff and I love the location! read more

So, we're new to the area and needed to find a vet for our Chihuahua, Reina. After reading the Yelp reviews, I thought The Paw Patch Place was going to be a perfect fit. However, I quickly realized how wrong I was. When we arrived, we were barely greeted by the front desk, it was more of them talking to each other and then handing paperwork my way without much explanation. Then one of the ladies instructed us to follow her into a exam room. While there, I attempted to fill out the paperwork I was given but the vet assistant arrived before I could do so. He was friendly enough but he didn't seem to know anything about Reina (I had her records sent the week prior). But I figured it was maybe the vet that would know more about her history and didn't think much about it. Well, when the vet arrived, she was very timid. Anyone who knows anything about Chihuahua's, know that they are typically shaky. The vet wouldn't touch Reina, saying she was too anxious, and I tried to assure her that it was just Reina's disposition. However, she stated that next time, Reina should take an anti-anxiety pill before coming in. I said okay, while in my head thinking 'no way, I'll find a new vet'. Reina is 8 years old and never had an issue with anxiety at the vet. So, the appointment continues and she barely examines Reina--didn't check her teeth, didn't feel her body/bones, nothing. As she's finishing up the appointment, I brought up that Reina was due for one of her shots. She leaves and when she returns, she suggests I give her the injection orally. Fine, whatever...I administer the medicine. So, we're finished with the vet and the assistant comes back. At this point, I remember I wanted to have Reina's nails trimmed while we are there. The assistant then goes and gets the vet who tells me they don't want to cut her nails today to avoid Reina making a negative association with coming to the vet. That is absurd; long nails can be dangerous/painful for dogs. At this point, I'm ready to pay and leave. I get to the counter and they tell me the cost and it's about $20 more than anticipated. When I inquired about the additional cost, they informed me that the anti-anxiety medication for her next appointment costs money. I stated she didn't really need it and the lady just looked at me. No response of, "ok, I'll take it back" or "do you not want it then?". I handed her my card and was definitely ready to just get out of that place. I still have no idea what I paid for, since a full examination wasn't even done. It may have been an off day for them since it seems others have loves going there but it was a really, really off day and we won't be returning. Thankfully we've found a new vet that knows about dogs! read more

My pets were truly cared for here. It was the first vet visit for both of my kittens, so I wasn't sure how they would react. Everyone was very kind and patient with my rambunctious kitties. They send you an email telling you want to do to keep your pets as comfortable as possible in a new environment, and it really helped! I brought their favorite toys, they got lots of treats, and catnip bubbles (?!?!). This was definitely the best vet experience I've had. If you're looking for a great vet, look no further! read more

They noticed the potential of a cancer in one of our cats on their first physical with her after we moved her from another vet and her past 2 vets either hadn't seen or told us in her records. Before you decide to be a dedicated patient, you should know that Paw Patch Place will turn you away on your dog's dying day. We were patients for 2 years with both our dogs. When our old girl could no longer stand, we rushed to Paw Patch Place for help. We were there when the doors opened, but were turned away and told to call an emergency vet because the doctor was too busy. She couldn't be bothered to even come out to talk to us. The only important vet visit is when your pet is in distress. Find a vet that understands prioritizing patients and has compassion. read more

Every other place, person, or business has had no problems, with my email address; with my email since i started it in 1995. The staff were so great when I brought my cat in for a UTI. They were all so sweet and welcoming. Our cat is super friendly and loved all the attention from everyone. We were the last appointment of the day and walked straight into the room and waited no time to see the Dr. will definitely be bringing our dog here as well. read more

Very thankful we used Yelp to find our vet. We are lucky to have gotten in with The Paw Patch Place. Our 8 week old Pug Puppy couldn't have had a more calm and easy first trip to the vet. So to start: - Parking is available onsite, although limited. - There is an area out front where your pet can go relieve itself if need be (poop bags included) - There is a treat snack box outside as well - The lobby/front desk also has a treat cannister - Easy check in process, very kind and welcoming front desk staff - Clean, bright, welcoming interior - Put into a room that had a baby scale for our small pug - the exam table had a blanket on it and treats again! The vet went through all the "having a first puppy" steps with us which was really helpful and had a neat little toy to use with cheeze wiz for when he got a shot. Overall, couldn't have asked for a more seamless first visit to the vet. Hopefully this means his experiences here forward will be just as easy, but this vet being a Fear Free establishment makes me think we will have nothing but memorable appointments in the future. read more

These guys are great! Ever since moving into Indianapolis I have taken my dogs here. Now, with the addition of Joey, I wouldn't go anywhere else! Everyone is so friendly, the doctors are knowledgeable, and my dogs genuinely love coming in! Sometimes I wish the owners will get as many treats as the animals, LOL! I've had an amazing experience taking my cat and dog to the Paw Patch Place. They take great care of the animals well-being and are very caring of any stress or anxiety. My dog was very nervous for a blood draw, so they gave my an anti-anxiety medicine and had me come back another day free of charge and had me enter the room with him (previously it was only curbside for covid-19 precautions). This is the most thoughtful vet clinic I have ever been to. They do everything they can to help your pet including properly explaining what's going and being very honest about how much it will cost you before you agree to treatment. They know a vet visit can be stressful and they go above and beyond in creating a stress free environment. They make the exam rooms as comfortable as possible and they're all trained on how to properly handle your pet in a fear free manner. This place is amazing! My dog has horrible vet anxiety and they go above and beyond to make sure he's comfortable. You can go in just for introductions and treats a few times if you want to. They have soft music, calming pheromones and essential oils, they cater to their patient's ever need. Best vet visit he's ever had and that makes it stress free for me too. Here's the thing that keeps me off of 5 stars...I have no idea what my Vet's name is. I'm not even sure we see the same person every time, which I find a little bothersome...maybe it's my fault, but shouldn't they be leaving a good enough impression on me to make me know? We get tremendous help every time we are there. The ladies behind the desk know my dog when he comes in and never have to ask who we are, which totally impresses me. They always accomodate us with our silly first time parent questions and when we freak out for no reason they give us a reassuring smile and send us on our way. They keep us up to date when our pup needs something and they really have a way with making him feel calm at the vet. The only other thing I have an issue with is that they always want to fix my dog, but he doesn't need fixed. It's too expensive for one, and he is never out roaming the streets creating illegitimate puppies.So whats the big deal? read more

I second a previous review in which states, these vets are pushing the anti-anxiety drugs. My work requires me to travel and therefor my dog is no stranger to new vets or places to be boarded. The staff here came across as abrasive and rude upon arrival in addition to having the audacity to insinuate abuse with one of my dogs because she commonly submits to new people. The attitude of staff continued down the path of condescension by reiterating that they were "medical professionals" that know what's best for my animals, yet contrasting the abundance of other licensed veterinarians my pets have seen that pretty unanimously thought of my dogs as sweet, docile beings. In summation, I would strongly recommend against taking your pets to this location for the "medical professionals" are more like pill-pushing vets with a superiority complex. My review is short, sweet, and to the point because my appointment was, well, short sweet and to the point, which is a good thing. I was hesitant to purchase a Groupon for a veterinary visit, but I did so because I'm a cheapskate and it was too good of an offer to pass up. It was super easy to make the appointment. I was able to get in fairly quickly. Upon arrival, my little darling kitten, Olivia, was not in the best of moods, but the staff was friendly and the check-in process was easy despite Olivia's incessant whining. We were taken in the check-up room, which was clean and inviting. I love the wall art. I just had to give these ladies 5 stars because Olivia, who hates to be held, would not be still when she had to get her temperature taken. Fortunately, Olivia gave us exactly 5 seconds to get it done. A short while later, the vet came in. Super nice lady who answered all of my first-time cat owner questions. Unfortunately, Olivia had to receive her vaccinations. My kitten let everyone know that she was not happy about getting shots. The vet and the vet assistant had to take her into another room to give her vaccinations and clip her nails. I don't know how they did it, but they took care of her as quickly as possible. I had a happy cat once again. The welcome packet was also a nice touch. All in all, I had a great first visit. Olivia and I would return again to take care of all her needs. Hopefully next time, she will be a little nicer to the wonderful staff! read more

We have been going to the Paw Patch Place for a couple of years. We recently had to take our dog in for some health concerns. They did a good job of giving us options, being thorough in their exam and considerate on the cost. Dr. Dowden has a wonderful bed side manner, which is really important to me. It's not easy when your animal is sick. They were on time with the appointment and we were able to leave within about 30 minutes. I appreciate their promptness as well. read more

Our beutiful 14 year old Labrador died yesterday. We have been customers of the paw patch with our two other labs for years We took our old boy to Lake Michigan this last weekend never thinking he would not come home. His back legs finally gave out on our last day there. He refused food and water and his breathing was terrible. We found ourselves driving home with a dying friend. A very stressful situation for any pet lover So we called the paw patch and they said they could not put him to sleep that day because they had people coming in with very sick pets. Well I think my dog was extremely sick. They said we could bring him home and back the next day. He would never have survived that night We had to take him to Noah animal hospital where they recommended. They could barely find his heartbeat I am sad that this practice could have not found one soul to stay and help our dog go to sleep A sad and despicable state of affairs With a new dog one day. This is probably the worst vet. Do not take your dog here. We have a 30 pound mini golden doodle who they treat like a vicious 200 pound beast. She is nervous and scared of the vet, so of course they resort right to giving her trazadone as well as already pumping in some sort of anti-anxiety meds through air fresheners. They always want her muzzled even though she has never bit, lunged, or done anything of that manner. She just hides behind one of her owners. This is probably because they show the dogs no affection. They don't try to pet the dog or get on her level or talk to her or anything. The latest, they wanted to completely sedate her just to give her the rabies and bordetella shots. I had to take my 2 year old son to 2 vet appointments for our puppy and the vet was extremely rude to my son at both appointments. We will not be returning and I would not recommend this place to anyone with small children. We had been going to this location for 4 years for our cat and had a great experience however the moment our son had to come with us to an appointment it was a VERY different experience. I understand it's not ideal to bring a 2 year old, however anyone who is a parent understands you don't always have a choice. read more

Have to say I am disappointed in this vet. I work for a local hospice and took possession of 2 little dogs after the patient passed. The dogs had tags from the Paw Patch. Our patient had been very ill for years and not been able care for her pets as they should have been. Unfortunately, our services weren't initiated until the day before the patient passed...anyway...I called Paw Patch and asked if they'd be willing to get their shots up to date and give them an exam. Our non-profit Foundation offered to give a tax receipt for a donation in kind so the vet could use the service as a tax write off, but the owner refused to help...I will not be recommending this vet to anyone I know. read more

Nice vets & vet assistants who are patient, take the time to answer any questions I have, & really seem to enjoy their job. Last time I was in they had free dog treats. I know Indy loves its dogs, but what about us cat people? Why no treats for the kitties that come to the vet? We are very over-protective pet parents and they take awesome care of our mini aussie mix! He had some concerning issues when he was a puppy and they took care of him so well and really put our mind at ease. They are not alarmists, but take concerns very seriously. The short of it, knowledgeable staff, friendly, fast, and decently priced. My pit/dalmatian mix is deaf, fearful of strangers, and a 55lb ball of energy. She always has to wear a muzzle when visiting the vet and usually has a few vet techs holding her in place while the doctor takes temps., blood samples, and gives shots. My pup has terrible fall allergies that get worse every year, which is usually something that can be treated at home with human allergy meds. I came to the Paw Patch for the first time for advice on her allergies this year, which seemed to come a little early. They explained how the allergies/fleas are affected by the dry summer we had and gave me tons of options for treatment, understanding I was on a budget and also looking for the fastest relief for my pup. They let ME calm my pup down when she was getting stressed, and they just understood that not every dog has an easy going temperament. It put me, as an owner, at ease. I'm recommending this place to every pet owner/lover I know in the SoBro area. read more

I want to echo someone else's point that staff at the Paw Patch Place understand that not all doggies and kitties are perfect angels. I have a 13-year-old dog that is kind of a grump-a-saurus when she has to meet new people in new places. It makes her nervous so she barks and sometimes growls. I like to say she is a "slow warm." But when she does warm up to someone, she will be very docile and sweet for them. The staff picked up on this without me having to explain or make excuses. They accept my grumpy old lady dog as she is and help calm her every time we come in. I also appreciate being able to hold and calm her myself without having to give her over to a tech who muzzles her. They have never muzzled my dog at the Paw Patch Place and for that I am very thankful. read more

We have been going to Dr. Dowden for over 12 years. Our pets have always been rescues and Dr. Dowden has worked with us through their health issues and the appropriate treatment. She has referred us on to specialists when needed. She and her staff always follow up to see how they are doing. We've known Dr. Penny Dowden for over 20 years as she cared for two dogs over the years. She and the staff at The Paw Patch Place are kind, efficient and knowledgeable and provide excellent care. Recently, we had to put our 15 year old dachshund to sleep. To say that the staff was compassionate is an understatement. They cared for us as much as our dog.
