I'm insane. Picked up more fosters.
Angela J.

The Indy Humane Animal Welfare Center is a high-quality, low-cost spay and neuter clinic, that also offers low-cost vaccines, heartworm testing, fiv/felv testing, microchipping, deworming, flea treatment/prevention, and heartworm prevention. They also have a mobile vaccine clinic that visits various locations in central Indiana. What excites me most about Indy Humane Animal Welfare is that they offer a Community Cat Package and TNR (trap neuter return) assistance. They even offer free spay/neuters for community cats if you live within certain zip codes. My son and I foster neonatal kittens and volunteer at the Indy Humane adoption center. Typically we pick up our foster kittens at the Michigan Road location. But there was somewhat of an emergency and I was asked to pick up a box of orphaned kittens at this location. The building is very easy to find. You just can't miss the eye catching, amazing animal rescue motif graffiti. I think they were getting ready to close and there only seemed to be one person waiting in front. I was pretty focused on getting the kittens picked up, since we were unsure how long it was since they'd ate, and they didn't have any formula or neonatal feeding items on hand. So really all that I noticed was that it was nicely lit, clean, smelled nice and all the women I talked and worked with were very nice and friendly. I did also notice that the waiting area seemed really nice sized for a low cost clinic. I've sat thru crazy packed mornings at other low cost clinics for early morning spay/neuter drop offs. So a spacious waiting area is definitely a huge plus.

jack the cat

what happened to jack? brought my feral jack cat into get dental work I knew what was going on with him because he had the exact same things happening as my inside 13-year-old cat that I took to a different vet and had surgery and home doing great, did jack come home no, wish I never brought him there should of paid out of pocket for jack maybe he wouldn't have been sitting in the same nasty cold metal cage over 2 days later, and I know this because I never received any communication from Indy human so Wednesday I went to check and ask about JACK a worker there took me back to see jack and he was in a room with 3 other cats all in metal traps one cat was meowing so loud, but jack was back in the corner of this trap looked like the same newspaper I brought him in, no signs of food or water, was told that day he would be transported to a vet Thursday to have dental work done Friday, [[[ but I thought that was why I was taking JACK there was for dental not to be sitting in a cage for days waiting to go somewhere else ]]] ,so Friday comes and no communication I left my phone number with staff, about 6 in the evening, I message the person who thought she was helping JACK and she proceeded to tell me he passed away during anesthesia because of seizures, I call bullshit JACK had dental trouble I saw him all day long he didn't have seizures, sitting in that cold metal trap for days and alone, I'm sorry JACK wish I would of followed my instincts and took you home when I came to check on you Wednesday, my fiancée said he's a feral, my reply is he was my feral I loved him very much as I love and care for my 4 inside cats and remaining 6 ferals, feel like these so called LOW INCOME CLINICS are nothing but a big profit making company, people who use animals to profit off in life shame on you, WHAT TRULY WENT ON WITH JACK CAT

I was searching for the perfect dog and I came across Lucky Star Cavalier Rescue. They rescue…read moreCavalier King Charles puppies and dogs along with helping other breeds out of a horrible life after being born into puppy mills. I went on the site and saw pictures of the Cavaliers that were up for adoption. They were really so cute that I google this breed and fell in love with them. So I applied to foster a dog and about a week later they called and told me that they had just found out about this puppy mill in MO that had been shut down and they were driving there to pick up 20 dogs and puppies. So they needed fosters right away. I drove to Indiana and picked up the dog (puppy) that I was fostering. Her name was Fergie and she was 6 months old and in perfect health. Well, of course I knew I was going to fail at being a foster because the second I met Fergie...I knew she was mine. So about a week after I was fostering her I finally broke the news to Lucky Star that I was going to adopt Fergie. The whole process was very easy and what a great feeling to know she was rescued away from a bad life. They pay all the vet bills for being fixed, a complete check up, all their shots and teeth checked. They do ask for a donation when you adopt. But they do have alot of vet bills as some of the dogs that come out of puppy mills aren't always healthy because they were so abused. A small cost for saving the life of a beautiful, snuggable, kissable puppy. I want to rescue a bunch more, but I am at the limit of two dogs right now. Check them out at http://www.luckystarcavalierrescue.org/ and they will melt your heart too.

Cats Haven

Most of us are familiar with our local county animal shelters, but I had never heard of Cats Haven…read moreuntil volunteering with a group of friends. Cats Haven is Indianapolis' oldest no-kill, free-roaming cat sanctuary. It cares especially for elderly cats or those with special needs (missing limbs/eyes, genetic disorders, etc). I would estimate in this three-story house they have at least 100 cats. {Did my fact checking - on its website, it says 300 cats are in its "network" - meaning living in the shelter or in a foster home or feral cat colony in the community). They do adopt some cats out who are well enough to be adopted out, but for most of the felines, this is the place they will live out their days in comfort, basking in the sunlight or by the fireplace. For awhile, it kept its location a secret in an effort to prevent midnight drop-offs of unwanted cats {they do not take cats from the public}. Now it seems the address is more public, largely because it is in greater need of donations. Its most recent fundraiser was the Purr-Fect Cup Cat Cafe. It looks like it is hoping to introduce more of the community to its work in the coming year. Cats Haven has an open-door policy, and anyone can drop in during business hours. Fair warning: the place VERY much smells like cats {what do you expect - there are cats everywhere} but I am impressed with the quality of the facility and how dedicated its staff is. I hope Cats Haven will see continued success!

When i first arrived here at cats haven for the open house, I was impressed with the number of cats roaming around the yard and house. These cats are all older and some were injured or crippled. They all seem so friendly and appear to be well taken care of. A caged area out back let's the indoor cats get outside through a clever ramp system. Without this shelter, many of the cats would be euthanized because of their disabilities. It seems like an awfully big responsibility to care for some of these cute little critters, but I understand the passion that makes it all work. This place works mainly from donations and if your a cat lover like me, you need to get in here and see the great things going on and give them a hand.

Communication went from poor to me receiving insults on the comments page of their face book…read morebecause I gave them a bad review. They tried to bully me. Several ganged up and had their husbands chew me out as well. There is no phone #. Nobody to talk to in person. Maybe if there had been a real person to talk to instead of just on the computer, it could have been more personalized. They also lost my application. We waited for them after a few days and lost another dog in the process because we were waiting on them. Then when they found it said my husband and I would not be a good match for a corgi because he needed a furry friend. He would have been an only dog. Word of warning their requirements are tight and not flexible when placing pets. I get that, but they never really tried to explain why we were denied. We were upset. Like a lot of organizations like this they tried to defend themselves by saying I was just bitter and should just move on which we will, but. In view of all the nasty comments and loosing another dog in the process we thought that other people out there should be fore warned. It would have been more professional if they had just apologized instead of bad mouthing me on the computer. They have some cute pets, but some of the volunteers are treacherous. They should treat potential pet adopters with more respect if they expect donations which is the only way they survive. No donations from us because of their bad behavior. We also feel because we are an older (WHITE) couple it could have been age discrimination. Otherwise, they would have thought twice about what they said to me on face book. Evidently the founder and leader of this place thought it was okay. WORD OF WARNING: IF YOU GET DENIED, THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO WORK WITH YOU OR BE FLEXIBLE. GO ELSEWHERE FOR A FAIR APPLICATION PROCESS. THEY WILL GET NO DONATIONS FROM US!

I get that the owner must prefer animals-- but since animals aren't going to walk in on their own, human skills are also needed. Those are not skills this owner possesses. Her organizational skills are lacking also. When I spoke to her assistant to schedule the first time, I asked for a fax number to send the boys vaccinations, and after taking the time to do that, this woman had no idea how to access her faxes for some reason, and I had to bother my vet's office again. I took my two teacup Pomeranians here ONE time. One of my poms had a pretty, full coat when he went in, and when he came out, half of it was gone. I specifically asked that he not be trimmed too much. My husband thought we should give the groomer another chance. When I came for a second time, and asked her not to cut it short like last time, she argued with me, swearing she didn't cut it short. Now maybe she defines "short" as shaved to the skin or something, but his hair was so much shorter, that we had to put him in a harness one size smaller. Never had that with another groomer. Not only that, but however she cut his hair, it is not growing back. She basically wrecked his coat, and is trying to blame the dog, saying he has "coat funk" (which our vet says is made up groomer jargon). Rather than blaming the dog, all this woman needed to do was to listen to me when I told her not to cut too much of my dog's hair off. Instead, she had to be right, and had to have the last word. She refused to listen, was rude, and kept repeatedly using this term "coat funk." The final straw was when she said "I didn't give your dog coat funk." No lady, you gave him the crappiest hack job of a hair cut he's ever had, and wrecked his coat. You did that. Not the dog. And I will let everyone know that this is the last place to take a dog you care about. If your dog has any kind of double coat, I advise you to go elsewhere. If you have any special instructions you want implemented, go elsewhere. If you want to be listened to, go elsewhere. You and your dog deserve better.
