Terrible service in omitting the included gratuity for a party of 5 and then ignoring my refund…read morerequest. I called Itto's 7 times and emailed them once to no reply. Below is my request. The purpose of this email is to request a partial refund of $40 for my friend and I each on our visit on May 23rd, 2026. The main reason for this request is that we did not know about the included gratuity in our bill. It was hard to notice this and consequently, after splitting the bill, my friend and I tipped an additional $40 each. First of all, imposing a mandatory gratuity is not industry standard. Just to make sure it's not me and it's you, I called six other restaurants nearby Itto's Tapas: Due Cucina, KinD, Pegasus, Lady Jaye, and Matador in West Seattle. None of them add a mandatory gratuity regardless of party size. However, when I called Shadowland they informed me they do add a gratuity for parties with 6 guests or more. We had only 5 guests and our receipt includes a line item for "large party." Five guests is not a large party and only requires one server. This demonstrates Itto is the only restaurant imposing a mandatory gratuity for groups of 5 in the area. We did not see this line item at the time and did not expect to have to audit the receipt for a practice that is not industry standard nor were we a large party. Furthermore Itto's own website describes itself as "softly lit" making it hard to see the receipt. Also, we generously ordered many items from your menu making it even harder to see the "large party" scam line on a receipt with so many words on it. Finally, we were socializing and listening to each other's stories and not reviewing the bill with a fine tooth comb. Next, your server lacked the proper manners to inform us of the included gratuity nor did she thank us for the 20% we already paid for. She was not a mute and capable of using her voice to inform me that Itto does not accept the Discover credit card I originally tried to pay with and that Itto only accepts Visa and Mastercard. Therefore it's reasonable to conclude she was purposely omitting to tell us that the gratuity was already paid for when she returned with the second receipt. Next, we thanked our server several times when she took our order, brought our food and drinks, and when she refilled our water. It would behoove your staff to be as thankful as the guests they are serving. Saying "thank you for the 20% tip you already paid me" would be the right and polite thing to do. It's shameful and poor manners to omit gratitude for a gratuity paid. Minimum wage in Seattle is $21.30 and our included gratuity was $60.30, almost triple that. That is more than enough for a job that does not require an advanced degree and the student loans that come along with one. Instead, our opportunistic server with poor manners collected an additional $80 for a total gratuity of $140.30 for about one hour of work. Given a subtotal of $301.50, that amounts to 47%. Do you ever tip that much when you go out to eat? No, that is an absurd amount. The service did not amount to that. I've been to a restaurant where the silverware is changed and the servers scoop the crumbs from the white linen tablecloth before every course. We did not get this kind of 5 star service at all. Instead we were taken advantage of. Please return the $40 to my card and to the card that my friend used to pay the bill at your restaurant on Saturday night. I was pleased to find that the food is still good, and they are working with what feel like more filling portions nowadays. We were particularly hungry and so went for two small dishes, one large dish, and one noodle/rice dish. We ended up actually leaving the restaurant stuffed with a small amount of leftovers, which is almost unheard of for two people with major appetites. My husband is vegetarian, so we ordered off their second menu, which seems to be a collection of all vegetarian-able and also gluten free dishes on the menu. I simultaneously like that they had a separate menu (making us not have to comb through the regular menu to figure out what we could eat, and dislike that it's combined with the gluten free menu (it's a totally separate diet? confusing to randomly have gluten free but meat containing items sprinkled in?). We had the strange flavor cauliflower and eggplant, the chickpea curd (the fried version), the mapo tofu, and the yibin noodles. Each of us had a cocktail, the sour not sorry for me, and their version of a hot toddy for him. The favorite was definitely the chickpea curd, which I recall liking a lot at our previous visit. It's still a lovely bowl of textural goodness, combining the crisp outside with the silky inside, a lovely flavor of chickpea, the crunch of the peanuts, and the spicy tangy sauce. I could eat multiple bowls of that stuff and nothing else, frankly. The strange flavor cauliflower and eggplant was also excellent. I am not sure what the "strange flavor" was, because it didn't taste strange at all, just perfectly balanced and refreshing, again with a wide variety of textures (crunchy cauli, tender eggplant) to tickle the palate. The mapo tofu was fine but is far from the best version of this classic dish. The sauce was a bit one note for me, and lacked the textural variety that most of the other dishes had, and without the usual thickness of a mapo tofu sauce it just ended up feeling like nicely flavored tofu in a lackluster broth. It came with a heaping bowl of delicious white rice, which you definitely need. The yibin noodles were quite good, super savory and very satisfying. I liked the version we had where the pork is replaced with mushrooms, which adds a nice chewiness and savory note to the dish. Cocktails are really good, and I actually want to try some of their NA drinks the next time I visit. Service is great, fast and attentive. One last thing I noticed is that the dining area becomes very oil-smoky througout the course of the evening. It's an effect of having an open kitchen without a powerful enough extractor--the cooking fumes from the woks just spread through the air and does honestly put a bit of a damper on the experience. If you have sensitive airways you might want to visit at an off hour to avoid that, and you will definitely need to wash all your clothes and your hair after leaving if you come during peak hours. Between the two of us, having the above dishes and two cocktails, our meal cost $150 after tax and tip. Not too bad for a nice meal, and while it may not be in the budget for a weekly date night, I can definitely see this making its way back into our regular rotation.
