Stayed in Index and popped into this shop because it was the only place open other than my hotel at 7.30pm. It's a general convenience store with some food and drink items, Tshirts, random supplies, etc. I was pleased by the small but good local craft beer offerings, and I was very surprised and excited about the kimchi--I bought a jar and it's delicious! The owners of the Gen Store have faithfully, honestly and with the utmost dedication served our community for decades and we LOVE them. We all put up with thousands of rude ass tourists demanding a bathroom (theres a public one across the street), thinking they gonna get big city products, speeding through our tiny town, and thinking they all that. So don't cry like a baby when when you get treated like you deserve. To our beloved guests. with patient, diverse and open minds, that show respect for a community they are exploring, I welcome you. The fresh kimchi, bbq , crazy bread, sandwiches and cookies they make from scratch on the weekends are bomb. The products they carry support this community, and visitors. I don't know why the people with the bad reviews had those bad experiences. Maybe it goes back to getting what you give. I just went to this store a couple of hours ago and I couldn't have had a better experience. I am staying at an Airbnb a few miles north of Index and needed to get supplies. I was worried that this was the only store close enough and was so poorly rated but decided to give it a try. I am glad I did! I found most of the items I needed and the gentleman at the counter was wonderful. When I first came in and said: "Hello!" He did give me a curious look as if he was trying to figure out if I was somebody to be worried about. After I gathered my items and came to the counter, he was warm and as I smiled and talked to him, I could tell he felt more comfortable. He smiled back and was kind telling me not to worry that be would give me bags because I didn't have my own. He bagged my purchase and when I was walking out carrying two bags, he ran from behind the counter to open the door for me. He smiled and told me to have a good day as I walked out. It is a small store but has a good selection of drinks, cereal and other grocery items. A small supply of first aid items and OTC meds, car care items, and food. I think that if you understand this is a small town and locals may not be used to seeing out of towners too often, you may understand that their initial reaction may not be the warmest. However, if you extend kindness, you give them the chance to do the same back. I will definitely be back to this little store to support the local small business and community. read more

I have been going to Index for almost 40 years. I never have failed to stop at the Index General Store. It has never been other than a very good experience. The people are consistently friendly and helpful. They have quite a variety of items in there in case you forgot a thing or two and you can always get something hot to eat or drink- very nice on a cold dank morning before your days activities such as hiking, climbing or rafting. And when you are done they are always there, friendly and with cold drinks. What more could one ask? read more

Traveling through Index and stopped at this general store planning to buy a drink and a snack. Went in and ask if I could use their bathroom and the man behind the counter was rude in how he answered "NO!" When asked if he knew of a public restroom he did slightly less rudely tell me there was one at the park. Interaction was much more brusque and off-putting than it needed to be. After walking across the street to the park and returning to my car less than 5 minutes later, I sat there for a few minutes waiting for a co-worker to meet me. When my co-worker went to use the bathroom at the park the man came out and started to yell at me. He asked me how much longer I would be parked there (keep in mind there were zero cars in the parking lot other than mine and my co-workers.) He was yelling that I can't park at his store, that's it is "in and out" parking. I politely told him that I would only be there for another 2 minutes while the co-worker used the bathroom. He stomped away and then turned to face my car with an aggressive stance and facial expression then went inside and glared at me until I left shortly thereafter. I imagine that it isn't fun to probably answer the same questions from people driving through Index and aren't local residents. But, come on, if he could be pleasant or, at the very least, neutral in his behavior he would probably do a more brisk business. Life is way too short to spend money at a store run by an aggressive, rude, and unpleasant person. I will never return. read more

My boyfriend and I needed to get away from the city so came for a 3 night stay just outside of town in an Airbnb (which is wonderful). Our second day it was raining so we decided to take a trip to the town general store to see if there were any board games or Index souvenirs we could take home. We browsed the store about 15 minutes looking at stuff when the lady came up to us from behind the counter and asked us to leave because we were "looking at everything"...umm, I may be mistaken but is that not what shopping is? Looking at things and deciding to buy it or not? Any-who, we were shocked...we're both in the corporate world and no we were not dressed in suits but as every day people on a leisure vacation getaway. Never in my life have I had someone treat me like that ...ever! So, to sum up this store: *they're selling Costco items that are not for resale *if you like being profiled and starred at this is the place for you *sorry for checking expiration dates before I buy things...half the crap in the store was expired. *don't waste your time- drive to Gold Bar and you'll be treated kindly and appreciated as a customer *looking at the reviews I believe the locals are the only ones giving a good review *my guess is the only reason this place is still open is it's also the towns mail boxes. Keep driving past this one...don't let some rude lady ruin your day like we did. Brusque service, average general store. I mostly come here for cold drinks. The chocolate chip cookies are really good, but the kimchi is too sweet for my taste. They resell Costco items, which doesn't violate any Costco rules (I've also seen this at many small convenience stores around the country). read more

I called a few days ago just to ask what type of food items they sold because I'm pregnant and the nearest store to our cabin was like 30 minutes away. A woman on the phone yelled at me that they didn't sell food...? I even verified with her that I had called the correct place. I checked the pictures of their shop and they very clearly sell food. Not sure what her problem was but looks like from the reviews, they're terrible at customer service and the only people giving them good reviews are locals who get their mail from their store. My wife and I stopped in to check out the quaint little town of Index, take some photos of the scenery and visit and shop at the stores. I parked alongside the general store and went across the street to get an espresso. Then my wife and I walked to the bridge over the River to take some photographs. I then returned to my car and where I planned to go into the general store and was greeted by a man who first yelled at my wife and then at me saying that we could not park there. I said where can we park and he pointed across the street and over to the park where there was no parking available. I had planned to do some shopping in the General store but I will never shop there, I feel we were treated very rudely. By the way, there was only one other car parked by the General store. Btw, Plenty of other parking spaces were available at the store. read more

I spend a lot of recreational time around Index, so I've been in this shop many times now, and I can safely say the lady that runs this shop is the rudest shopkeeper ever! One of the few times the shopkeeper acknowledged me with words instead of a seething glare was maybe the 2nd or 3rd time I came here, when she asked me to buy something or leave. Her eyes shoot invisible daggers at my face! I don't even know this lady; I'm just here for Gatorade! I keep coming back because I seriously want to do my part to support the little town of Index, and I don't expect good service or try to talk to her. No big deal. However, last weekend, after another death-stare purchase of Gatorade, I wanted to throw away some used napkins that were in my car. After walking around the front and side of the store, I didn't see a trash can, so I put the trash in a bucket-o-sand near the door. (Though surely a place for cigarettes, this sand bucket had other trash in it so I figured it was the de-facto trash can.) As I got in my car to leave, the lady came outside and yelled at me "This is not a trash can! Take your trash to a trash can!" I didn't know what to say, but definitely didn't want to cause a scene, so I went and got my used napkins and asked where the trash can was. Her answer: 'It's in the park.' I think she doesn't want me to shop at her store. So...instead of this aggro grumpy general store, I go to Outdoor Adventures in Index which across the street from the city park in Index. It is run by friendly people and they have food but it is not a grocery/convenience store and a lot of local knowledge and historical artifacts. A few miles up Hwy 2, Baring has an awesome general store with friendly people, a full restaurant and convenience items. read more

I live on the outskirts of Index and I go to this store a few times a week to get my mail and shop. It is a good place to go if you run out of something if you don't want to drive to Gold Bar or further. The lady shop keeper who I am friends with has to put up with a lot of crap from outsiders coming into our town. You have all the rafters coming in and the sports enthusiasts and everyone else. I have never had a problem with the owners.. they are decent to me and friendly. Without this store, we would all have to drive into town. Having the post office there is good too. The only complaint I have is they don't have a big enough supply of different food items. Other than that, I am happy with the store. read more

this store carries some canned goods, some eggs, alcohol, all marked up $1 to $2.00 over the next nearest store , (8 miles south). The owners are very discourteous, Very rude and un-pleasent, I will not do any further transactions with theses people, It is ok if you need beer or a candy bar. hope fully new ownership will happen soon. this place is a disgrace to an otherwise pleasant little town, read more

I don't know how things were before but I just moved to town two weeks ago and have been to this store three times so far. Each time the owners have been incredibly gracious to me. This morning I had three heavy bags and the wife even went out of her way to open the door for me. Will continue to shop here and the owners seem lovely. read more

I would have to agree with the last reviewer about the death stare the lady shopkeeper gives. I walked into the store and she just stared at me until I felt too uncomfortable to stay but she told me to leave anyway because I was drinking coffee and she didn't want it to spill everywhere. As the only general store here (and the only place locals can get their mail), I guess she can treat everybody like garbage and still get away with it. The gentlemen that works there (who I presume is her husband) seems a lot nicer and I have not had issues with him. The other thing is, they constantly watch Korean TV and they blare it where everybody can hear it in the store. What is that? I figure the shop is basically geared towards their comfort and not the comfort of the customers. I don't know if they've had issues with drunk or rude customers in the past and now they've defaulted to assuming everybody is drunk and rude and treating them as such but it's just not a pleasant way to run a shop. I will never spend another penny in the shop if I can help it (and they probably don't care anyway). I'll buy bulk elsewhere and bring it to Index before I go back here. read more

Years ago this store was owned by folks who sold baked goods made in the store, frosh veggies and other groceries, and other things that locals might want in a hurry, but not enough to drive down to Start-Up or Gold Bar. Than they sold it, and the new owners turned it into essentially, an over-priced beer and cigarette store. read more

My family has patronized this establishment for 18 years and it is our local 7-11. This small store basically has everything you need and their selection of Korean food is especially attractive. The Korean beef BBQ is amazingly delicious and I highly recommend it. read more
