Jozef even walked me through a couple of additional items that made a huge difference in the remodel including painting the cabinets instead of replacing (I don't know how they did it but they turned out perfectly), moving a cabinet for better sight lines, making a waterfall edge to update the counter, and putting a light in the newly installed stand up shower in the bathroom. All of the work is extremely high quality including some of the best tile work I have seen (and there was a lot of it). That was a punch in the gut after waiting for that extended time and paying extra for powder coating. He said that company only covers is the rail is loose.... I had a very bad experience using Jacob. My initial impression was that he was highly professional,…read moreand since he talked a big game I expected he would be very competent. His quotes were expensive but I've used a lot of contractors over the years in rehabbing my homes and serving on association boards, and know the value of paying extra for high quality help, so Jacob stood out. Unfortunately Jacob ended up having the terrible combination of being the most expensive while providing the worst quality work of anyone I've ever used. Jacob replaced a broken sump pump along with electrical changes to improve the setup. He was to provide me with a primary pump and a backup pump with "Battery back-up system w/ charging units to be installed for primary pump and secondary pump". Basically, the primary and secondary pump were supposed to both work with AC and DC power from a battery. The primary pump he installed only works on AC, so in a power outage it is worthless(exactly what I wanted to avoid). The backup is a much weaker pump and only works on DC. When I followed up with Jacob he insisted that the primary was just AC, but that it was also backed up, which makes no sense. I wasn't sure if he knew he was scamming me or just didn't know what he was talking about. After getting a chance to research the model he used, it is notorious for being cheap and unreliable. Worse, the electrical work was of embarrassing quality and I'll have to replace it before I could ever sell, and he actually charged me $300 extra due to some "surprise". There are multiple code violations and this job looks so terrible I've attached pictures of it. His reasoning is that I shouldn't care how it looks in my laundry room, and insisted it would pass inspection. Just as a finishing touch, he reused a 17 year old check valve instead of providing a new one, which saved himself ~$25 and threatens the integrity of the whole system. I had other contractors confirm my suspicions of his work and the pumps he used, as well as replace another sewage ejector pump at 1/3 the price of Andrew's quote for a separate project. Now I know I wasn't Jacob's favorite customer, as I was looking to use him for immediate help rebuilding our finished basement after a flood, and all of my other trusted contractors were busy and he was not. I went through different options with him to get the cost down, but at the end he was 50% more expensive than the next highest option, and his scope was much more limited (I was providing most of the materials myself). I had a bad feeling so I cancelled a few hours after telling him we were ready to go. He exploded with insults against me. I felt bad about what happened and know that business owners are competitive so I didn't hold it against him. I apologized and asked him if he would be willing to move forward with the sump pump work described above. This was my biggest mistake. He apologized back and agreed. Maybe his crap work was payback to me, but it is still his unprofessional work and exactly what you are paying to avoid when paying Jacob's prices. You can get quality work using licensed insured contractors that are much less expensive than Jacob. He has a few 5 star reviews out there, but he was so bad for me that I promised myself I would warn others as soon as I got a few moments to write a review.

Back in May/June 2025, I hired Handy Gentlemen for interior work on my house. It is now…read moremid-September. David, the owner, seems like a nice guy, and he did a good job replacing the tiles on my bathroom floor, and he (mostly his assistant) did a lot of painting, which on the whole looks good. But see below... The big issues were what I discovered after he was finished and had left: fresh paint stains in multiple areas, including the wood floor of my 19th century house and even furniture - which I cleaned up. Splattered paint near the ceiling of my kitchen which still, three months later, has not been patched, paint stains on my oriental rug, a major purchase 40 years ago, etc. David said he would pay for the rug damage, and I only asked for 50% of the very reasonable $175 cleaning cost. David told me to bill him via Zelle, something I said I'm not sure how to do. He already has my Zelle information, since that's how I paid him for the work. But after messaging him and emailing several times, he has not responded. And I still have paint streaks on the wall and an unpaid bill. So I can't recommend Handy Gentlemen. I think part of the problem is that David is under-manned and a bit overwhelmed, but not responding to my messages is unprofessional.

Originally I had planned to go through Home Depot for purchasing & installation but was having a bad experience and decided to cancel the HD installers and hire locally and I am so glad I did! David took the time and care to prepare my subfloors with new plywood and secure it to reduce a lot of those squeaks. He advised on what would look nice for new baseboards and the final floors look beautiful, a major improvement over the old carpet! Will likely hire David the Handy Gentleman for future projects.
