After getting several quotes and recommendations, I went with Michael Kelly, owner of Mr. Fence, to remove the 60 ft long wood fence used to separate 2 adjacent properties and replace it with a more economical chain link fence. I chose Michael because he was responsive and willing to readjust his work schedule to meet my short time frame. His pricing was also very fair and competitive for the scope of work. After the site visit and getting his formal quote, Michael and his crew was able to start work within 2 days on a Saturday. David did a great job in removing the wood fence, installing the new support posts in concrete, and cleaning up afterwards on the first day. Michael came 2-3 days later after the concrete had time to fully cure to install the chain link to the support posts and install a new gate. Throughout the process, Michael was open and accommodating to my thoughts and ideas to ensure the finished product met my expectations. He also helped me with some related minor "handyman" type repairs that was well beyond his scope of work which were much appreciated. Michael made sure the work was done right and to my satisfaction. I explained the job, sent photos, and spoke with Kandy. I was told Jerry would review everything and get back to me. What came back was not an estimate. It was a message saying that they "prefer not to work in certain areas in Chicago due to high crime" and that they had previously been assaulted in "bad neighborhoods." Excuse me? I've owned my home for more than 20 years. I work out of state, regularly have contractors perform work at the property, and have never had a contractor respond to me this way. There was no incident at my house, no specific safety issue raised about my property, and apparently no effort to learn anything about the location beyond whatever assumptions they had already made about the neighborhood. My house is also not in ill-repair. I did speak with Kandy on the phone, also. Of course a contractor can decline a job. What bothered me was the manner in which this company did it and the sweeping characterization of me and my neighborhood that accompanied the refusal. After speaking with Kandy and then receiving that message, I was left seriously questioning what assumptions were being made about the neighborhood and the people who live there, including whether race and neighborhood demographics factored into the decision. That is not how I expect a professional business to communicate with a prospective customer. I also did something I should have done beforehand: I went back and read more of their reviews elsewhere. The complaints I found about missed appointments, changing prices, reliability, and service certainly did not make me feel as though I had missed out on anything. Thankfully, I found someone else to do the work. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods. If your business serves Chicago, professionalism should extend to customers throughout Chicago--not just the neighborhoods you have decided are acceptable. I would not recommend Welds on Wheels based on my experience. One star because Yelp does not allow zero.
