Wouldn't you know just weeks after I bought new remotes (old ones died) for our Genie garage door opener, the motor decides to quit. This is our second time using K.G.; both times have been problem-free. Came Friday at the scheduled time to diagnose the motor, got the door to work once and then it refused to budge. Since the Genie was from 1992, and we've had to replace everything else associated with this house, not surprising. So we needed a new opener and he recommended Chamberlain, which is a good brand. Showed up on time today, got straight to work (no-nonsense and very efficient), no mess from any of the dismantling or re-wiring, and left old parts as asked so I could scrap them. read more

I contacted this company because of the good reviews. Josh got back to me right away, and we scheduled a free estimate for an electric gate install. He called the day of the mtg to cancel and reschedule - his previous appointment took longer than expected - etc. So we scheduled for the following day. On my way to the rescheduled meeting, I was running about 10 minutes late - due to traffic, so I called to let him know, and when he answered, it took him a moment to remember - and then he remembered that he forgot to call me to cancel ..... I was taken aback - but I understand how time can get away from you, and that things come up - and I needed a bid, so I rescheduled again, for the following morning - asking for a call before the appointment. I did not receive a call - my call went straight to voicemail - and I still have not received any kind of message. I would've much preferred him telling me he didn't have the time, rather than to waste mine. read more

The lock on the door we had installed a mere 10 months ago stopped working, so I called to ask Josh to come take a look at it, since the receipt I got said there was a 3-year warranty on parts. Well, turns out that Josh has moved to Arizona, sold the phone number of his business to another door company. The new door company has no intention of honoring any of Josh's previous work (understandable, I suppose), so now we have to call someone else to fix it. In other words, this door company has changed hands recently, so if you had work done in the past, be aware that the warranty might not be valid anymore. read more

We live in west Humboldt Park. Have now used KG Doors twice: First time, garage door (two-car) needed repair after sub-par neighborhood-guy-type 'fixed' it after the door fell off its tracks. Two guys showed up on time, fixed quickly, very reasonable price. And I think they adjusted the rollers and/or tracks, too. Second time (today), Josh came (snowstorm, still on time), fixed wiring leading to the sensor, which was burned due to a fire. Fixed quickly, again super-reasonable price. He took half the cost for as a deposit. Come Monday, he did not show up. I called several times, left multiple messages, and attempted to message him on yelp with no response. I called Josh (the owner) to replace a garage door opener for my business. Originally, the garage door could go up and a screened garage door could be lowered. If the garage door was down, a safety would prevent the screened door from being lowered. However, Josh incorrectly installed the opener, so now the safety does not work - one door lowers on top of the other, falls off the track, and jams. I have called Josh numerous times; each time he says he will correct the installation, but he never shows up. It seems that he doesn't know how to fix the problem. His neglect and lack of follow-through is extremely unprofessional. I would NEVER recommend this company. read more

Had a sliding gate (wood/metal combo) built by KG last August. Was really excited after I got it put up. I agree with everyone else that these guys are on time, and definitely quick at their work. However, not even a full year into it, and I have several deep rust spots all over the black paint and the gate has a funny lean developing to it. During building, I was on a budget so I couldn't jump to the cedar upgrade, and I regret that in hindsight. My treated boards are all warped and funky looking now. I'm going to end up having to remove all the boards and replace them as well as sand, prime, and repaint the rusty areas. Probably end up doing it myself because I want to make sure every nook and cranny is covered. Want to make sure it lasts because the gate wasn't cheap. Not sure if I was an anomaly with the experience...I really liked working with these guys. Just wished the outcome was better. read more

KG doors saved me $2500. They were honest, thorough, quick and affordable. I highly recommend them. Our gate was broken, as it always seems to be. Repeatedly fixing it was killing our condo budget. A big problem was the string of completely irresponsible and shady gate repair companies. Gate mechanisms aren't too complicated, but they're still complicated enough that the average guy doesn't know how to fix them, or if the repair person is being honest. The first THREE repair places we contacted all said the same thing: you need to replace the entire operating unit, it will cost $3000. I called a few other places, one of them was KG doors. Josh, the owner, was quick to come out and provide a free estimate. His diagnosis: a squirrel had gotten into the gate box and chewed through a small but vital wiring area. His estimate to replace the parts, get the gate running again, AND squirrel-proof the gate box? Under $500. If we would have paid the $3000 to one of the other repair companies who were too lazy or deceptive to find the real problem, we'd probably have the same problem again next year, since they would have blindly replaced the whole system and ignored the true cause: diabolical squirrels. This is exactly why I'm glad Yelp exists. The good guys like Josh are out there, treating customers fairly and I hope this helps him continue to build his reputation and business. read more
