The work included removing the old flue tiles and throat damper, installing a UL-listed stainless steel liner with a lifetime warranty, insulating the flue, parging the smoke chamber, and installing a new top tile and top-closing damper system. Everything was clearly explained as they worked, which I really appreciated. The total cost was $5,400, which felt very fair for the amount of work, quality, and peace of mind we received. I had not looked into chimney repair before, but a bird entering your house like it's Santa will make you consider installing a chimney cap. Joe explained chimney caps to me like I was five years old, in the most respectful way. He explained how the chimney would need two caps because usually the furnace vents through the chimney. He explained how to check for myself in the basement. He was right. He also explained the chimney crown and that it needed to be replaced. I wondered how he could know that since no one climbed to the chimney during the estimate. I asked for pictures before the work started. The crown had cracks but served the house well for 80 years. He was right again. His team showed up, explained the scope of work, gently moved our plants out of the way, and got to work. We also had several bricks that needed to be replaced. That required the team to remove the broken brick, spread mortar, and install new bricks. They match the house well. I napped in front of the fireplace while they worked. I could only hear light tapping from the brick removal process. They sent photos while the work was in progress. Great photos that I will share with you below. They had a young man and his partner came out and they went in the basement and to the roof and told me all the work I needed done. They had to add a new and wide liner, fix the deteriorating staccato, ensured that there was no chance of carbon monoxide and of course the cap. It was well worth the investment. The first appointment I had there was a scheduling mishap so the woman that took my call offered to deploy an emergency weekend team but I opted to reschedule for the next week. After servicing it, they failed to put the logs back correctly and left the flue closed. Within hours, soot blew throughout our entire house. Black soot covered walls, ceilings, upholstery, linens, and furniture in nearly every room. The damage was catastrophic. We had to go through our homeowners insurance because the cleanup costs exceeded $60,000. The restoration required professional soot remediation, sealing and repainting walls, cleaning all upholstery and fabrics, and extensive cleaning throughout the entire home. What made this even worse was the company's response afterward. They would not provide the business owner's information or their business insurance information, and they took absolutely no responsibility for the damage caused by their work. We were left to handle the nightmare ourselves.
