I don't really get the hype about this place. The food is expensive and just ok. We got two Yaki Udon bowls, curry and teriyaki. Added fried tofu to both, menu indicated $2 extra but I was charged $3 for each. Bowls were piping hot and good size but the overall flavor was ok. The curry had exactly the same flavor as canned curry paste I buy in the nearby Asian store, the teriyaki was too salty and just too intense with ginger and sweetness, especially with the amount in the bowl. It was a lot of sauce, almost like a teriyaki soup. I'm a saucy person and I love a lot of sauce on my food but this was too much. Staff was friendly but considering we were there for the first time they could provide a little explanation on where to get water and what to do with empty bowls. Hello Ima, my old friend, it's been too long!! It's been at least a 1/2 year since I've been and every time I come back it does not disappoint!!! My first ever Ima experience was the Corktown location and I was not impressed. Then I tried the Madison Heights location and FELL. IN. LOVE. They've upgraded to being able to order at your table from your phone. You can have an open tab or close it out all from your phone, which is nice. No worries, they still have the traditional way of ordering too. ^_^ Today I got my Ima staple, the Spicy Tori Ramen. I always sub for pork belly. If you eat pork, this flavor hack is A MUST! I also tried two new things with absolutely NO REGRETS! I tried the sake steamed clams. They did not disappoint!!! Very yummy, light and flavorful. Almost resembling a lemon chicken rice soup with the basily, lemony flavor. (There's no basil though). This could've been a meal all on its own! It has the option to come with noodles or rice. I got the clams only and it was still very fulfilling with PLENTY OF CLAMS! The next thing it tried was the berries and cream. Again, light, flavorful and supper yummy!! Easy on even the fullest of bellies. I was curious about the tofu custard. But darn it, that shape shifting tofu hit the spot with its vanilla bean goodness, berry juice, the light sweet crunch of the Frosted Flakes ( malt crisp) with the mint on top! Whew!! This little dessert made me feel better about skipping out on Krispy Kreme afterwards. My only complaint would be a little more berries and definitely more mint! I want it in EVERY BITE! All in all. Genuinely one of my favorite places to get ramen. It's consistently good and I've never had a bad meal or menu item here. You order at the counter and if you're dining in then they give you a number and they bring the food to your table. So many menu options to choose from but my favorite is the shoyu ramen with sesame chicken. Literally so tasty. On this trip, we tried the smoked salmon potato salad shared plate and it was SO good. Definitely would recommend and it's not really like anything I've ever had before. The workers are always super nice and they have a good amount of seating at both regular tables and bar tops. The service was outstanding and it was a clean restaurant but unfortunately they didn't meet the mark on their dishes. I had spicy BokChoy and there was a strong lemon flavor not a fan. The Mushroom gyoza dumplings were ok appearance wasn't the best but decent, but the Spicy Miso ramen wasn't as flavorful as I would've expected. The Vegetarian udon noodles was delicious. The last thing that I didn't care for was that you had to pay for your meal and a mandatory tip was added prior to your experience, to me that was kinda of tacky and I think you are forcing your customers hands , when it's not really necessary, hence the poor dishes. This is my 1st time coming to this location . I went to the one down by Wayne state a while ago. My food was so good both times. This restaurant is not full service like the one in Detroit where you waited on at Hyatt table. Here you place your order at the counter and they bring your food out to your table. I ordered the shrimp and onion dumplings which were just as good the 1st time I got them. I tried a savory noodle dish which was so good! I was happy to have noodles that didn't have a sweet sauce on it. I don't know the name of the dish because the waitress suggested it to me and I didn't ask for the name. I think it's the yank butter udon. I also had a cup of lemonade which was good but I don't even remember the name of it. It is the yellow one that was flavored with some of fruit. Anyway, I want to go back to try other menu items and next time I will write down the names so I can make better suggestions. read more

The rice bowl is actually pretty darn good. We had a teriyaki salmon rice bowl and a pork belly rice bowl. Between the two, the pork belly was on point with the salmon right next to the point. Once we mixed the various ingredients, we were both impressed. The combinations of tasty sweet, pickled, spicy, and others just were a very good food experience. I didn't feel bad about paying the prices. What I didn't care about was the QR code to order. We walked in to see a curtain where it used to be the spot to order at the counter. We were told about the QR but still requested a menu, although using the code to see menu pictures. There were not any issues with ordering in person, though. The interior looked pretty classy before the little table QR codes were placed at all the sitting areas. Maybe this is the new generational thing, but paper notices taped on the wall are not my thing. read more

Came here after craving some noodle soups and did not disappoint. I know they have other branches throughout Detroit (I have been meaning to check out the Izakaya in Corktown) that have come highly recommended. The ordering process is fully mobile, where you scan the QR code, pick your dish, and pay all through the website. It is a bit unusual because you can put down the gratuity even before any foods comes out, or if you forget to close your tab you will automatically get charged 18% tip. There are waiters/waitresses that come bring the food and fill up the drink, but for the most part there isn't too much interaction with them. The menu has different types of noodle soups or stir fry noodles to choose from. I ended up getting the tori udon, which was a nice savory broth with soft chicken slices and bok choy. It was pretty satisfying in terms of the flavor and how full I was after. Next time I would be interested in checking out the ramen and the stir fry udons. I will say that the prices for some of the noodle dishes are a bit more than other places I've seen for comparable portions (they charge up to $22 for a bowl of ramen), but I'll have to see if the flavor is worth it. read more

The Madison Heights location is one of the quick service locations. Their menu is more limited than the Detroit location, so you may want to check their menu ahead. Order at the corner and they give you a table number to bring it out to you. They have a counter with self serve water and soda, as well as utensils. I think the Madison Heights location decor is pretty basic, the other two have a better atmosphere. They do have a patio here, though is overlooks a parking lot. The food seems consistent with the other other locations. It also came out fairly quickly. We split the pickled veggies (this is one of my favorite things they do, the veg changes though so you won't always get the same thing) and the shrimp and scallion dumplings. The dumplings had a nice sear and were flavorful. We each got a different type of udon dish, both were large, we were not able to finish. Again, great flavor, though I do think the prices, while not ridiculous, are a bit on the high side considering it is not table service. Many of the noodle dishes do not come with a protein, it has to be ordered as an add on. The pork belly is really good, and while it's pork belly, it's not super fatty. Great Ramen! Crazy prices. As a former LA resident, Ramen is one of my specialities. The ramen at Ima is as good as the stuff you can get on the west coast and even Japan, but the prices are just crazy. A good bowl of Ramen should not be 20 bucks. That said, you definitely are getting some amazing quality and really good food here. The place is clean, modern and trendy and gives off an LA type vibe. Went with the Tonkatsu Ramen and was very pleased with the flavour of the broth, quality of the noodles and the taste of the meat. This particular IMA is a hit or miss and most of the time, it's a miss. I went here a a week ago and I ordered the vegan pho. The bok choy was ice cold upon my mouth and the broth was very lukewarm, but very flavorful. The reason why I mentioned flavorful is when I told them how cold my food was, they served me a hot bowl with no flavor. I did not eat it but just had the broth. The servers are always kind, but it was the food runner who was attending me at the time. It's like you get poor quality an hour and a half before the store closes. I will not be returning. Wasn't expecting much of their ramen but was a lot better than I expected. Their pork broth had a great flavor and their smoked pepper paste/sauce was a great combo with the creamy pork broth. Pork belly was also on par with other legit ramen joints. I would only get their pork broth though since most of their other ramens come standard with chicken broth and since it's just plain old chicken broth, makes the whole dish taste a lot more plain even with all the chili oil and peppers it just wasn't satisfying. read more

Hadnt been here for about a year but it was a late Sunday night and just wanted a snack. I don't think they had wine/beer before but they do now. There's also a hostess to seat you, inside or out and a QR code menu or just give to the wait staff. We had the karaage chicken, spicy tuna dip(no more salmon & potato salad) and a pickle plate with Mexican coke,rice and their hibiscus lemonade. It really does bum me out to leave this review. I ate here the other day and got the spicy tonkotsu like normal. When it came out, my egg was Overdone. The pork was super chewy, and when I let the server know, he noted that it looked underdone. He was extremely nice and brought me back. A soft, boiled egg and 2 more pieces of pork belly, but they still were not the amazing Melt in your mouth texture as they have been in the past. The broth felt thin, the noodles a bit over done and it was all heat and no flavor. As my main entree I ordered the Tori udon, ginger chicken, soft egg and ginger oil. The chicken was flat and seemed processed. The noodles were decent, but the broth was mediocre and I prefer traditional ramen and udon dishes. Strongly recommend the pork belly when selecting protein! So flavorful and melt-in-your-mouth tender, it was the shining star in this bowl of already spectacular ramen. There's a generous amount of noodles in a rich and tasty broth (I went with the tori paitan ramen). The egg was soft boiled perfectly, but I did wish it had more flavor (like the marinated eggs I've had in many other shops). While the meal was quite filling, it didn't leave me bloated or sluggish. I was really disappointed the last 2 times i came here which sucks because my first review of this place was 5 stars over 3 years ago. They are just not the same. I ordered the spicy tori ramen with chicken and shared the chicken wontons and veggie plate. The "chicken" literally tastes like slices from the deli at Kroger. Just awful and unappetizing. I couldnt finish eating it. There was also an excessive amount of seaweed in my bowl which is very off putting to me. The chicken wontons are bland and the sauce they serve it with doesnt mesh well. Just love a place were it seemed that everyone working came by to see how our experience was and if we need anything from more water to any possible service was an amazing experience. I guess I did not notice it before while shopping at 168, but I noticed it this time and decided to visit a week later and try their food. We ordered a nice variety. We had chicken ramen, beef pho, the chicken sandwich, and curry udon. All of the food had a nice fresh taste. I liked all of the vegetables added to the noodles. I am the one who ordered the curry udon, and I added shrimp and chicken. Both meats had a nice taste, but I really enjoyed the cauliflower the most. The udon was supposed to be a stir fry, but it was very soupy and required a spoon. Not sure if that is typical. They have a nice variety of fun drinks, but you can also get them at the market across the parking lot. The portions were okay, I did have leftovers of the udon, but finished them later in the night. The ramen, pho, and chicken were finished at the restaurant and I think the family was still a bit hungry. The prices were also a bit high. But as stated, I did enjoy the quality of the ingredients and the adorable, quaint atmosphere. I liked that they had leftover containers out for customers to take. I would like to return and have more, although I do not think everyone in the family wants to return. If you want some noodles right now, go there and be happy. Interesting atmosphere in a positive way - quirky like. Feels like home in an alt friendly sort of way. They paly really surprising music. Every time, I hear something that I maybe never really expected to ever hear again. But there it was. But none of that really matters. Its the noodles. I have had most of the menu. It has all been good. Ima has satisfied that noodle craving in high style. Just go. Next time that craving hits you, Ima is where you want to go. I love going here! It is a solid restaurant that does all of the food on its menu relatively well which is a very difficult thing to do. I have tried a variety of items on the menu and one of my favorites it's the crispy karage chicken! It is perfectly fried and comes fresh every single time! I have tried both the ramen and the udon and no matter which option they are both amazing! Definitely has a great balance of flavors that are true to the dish and cuisine!
