I stay in Madison Heights for business sporadically. I am so pumped there's a ramen cafe here. It's not pretentious or exclusive. Prices are quite fair for what they offer. I have been here twice. Once a couple years ago and once again yesterday. Both times I left feeling the same about the restaurant. Good food. Way overpriced. For two bowls of noodles (no sides, no drinks), our bill landed over $50 (we did tip). And for $50 we weren't even seated at a table, we had to sit at a counter which generally is fine but no wait staff checked in on us and the chairs are extremely uncomfortable. Had to hunt people down for water multiple times. The hostess was nice but other than that service was lacking. We ordered from a QR code at our counter. The food itself was yummy. I had a spicy seafood kimchi udon and the husband had a spicy pork tonkatsu ramen (but actually subbed udon). Honestly the food presentation and taste was fine i just felt like with the amount of food they give its not worth the over $20 per bowl. I would expect that for airport prices but not at a noodle shop. Sometimes places will have a higher price point for food if the atmosphere is elevated or the vibes are meant to be appreciated. This didn't really honestly didn't seem like the case here at this restaurant. I think there are just as fine noodle restaurants in the area with more better seating, better service, and at a way cheaper price point. It's been a minute since I've been to Ima and back in the day (pre pandemic and not at this location), I only tried their udon and thought it was pretty good for the D! I was in the area and was craving noods so decided to stop in at Ima. It's in the 168 plaza. Appreciate that Ima is super solo dining friendly - bar tops as well as some "half picnic" tables where 2 can sit by side outside. Also, you can just order with Toast with the QR code which makes for a pretty seamless experience. While there was happy hour (daily M-F from 3-6pm, yep even on Labor Day!), I decided to show restraint and not over order for myself. So I ended up getting: * Pickle Plate - love me a good pickle plate. All was pretty good from the shiitake to the curried pickled cauli. * Spicy Tonkatsu: I added extra egg without realizing it came with a jammy egg already! Wasn't mad about it though. The broth is pretty thick and flavorful. I was worried that the ramen would be super soggy but it wasn't. It was a touch more cooked than I prefer (I like springy al denteness) but there wasn't an option to customize that. All in all, I still smashed the whole bowl and the entire pickle plate. A quieter location than downtown Ima so you don't have to wait. Taste the same as original locations. Love their broth and goes well with their noodles. They have so many varieties on their menu and all of them are good. Some are rich and some are lighter, especially the vegetables broth. They don't lack in flavor though. Get the extra soft eggs with your noodles, I think it make your meal more fulfilling My complain is their rice dish. it looks nice but there are not enough toppings like in their pictures. Came in for dinner and ordered the Tofu miso ramen and the karaage chicken bites. The karaage was great. Crunchy exterior, juicy interior. If you like spicy, the chili oil they have packs a bit of punch if you're not used to it. The house pickles and furikake was a nice touch on the side. The miso ramen was good. Took the menus back to the table and sat there for another 10 minutes before I went back up to the hostess and asked if anybody was going to give us table service. She said I needed to ask that when I arrived. Seriously? We ordered the spicy Tori ramen in the Tori udon. Both which came to the table and presentation was extraordinary. The server was okay she didn't really come by our table much we had to search for her for the check and just asked the hostess for a take away container. Regardless of the server. The rest of the staff was very prompt and friendly. The food is always good here or at any of the other locations. I like this one because they have allot of the original menu. I had the miso ramen with root veggies. It was flavorful and they pan friend the tofu which was great the egg was cooked well but was cold on the inside like it was in a fridge. My partner had the spicy pork udon with added chili shrimp and said it was amazing that's his favorite dish. The edamame had great seasoning but was lukewarm warm. Ima is just consistently sooo good. They have a ton of options on the menu from ramen to udon, pho, dumplings, rice bowls, karaage sandwiches, and more. I've only gotten ramen during my visits here, and even then, there's such a wide range of options and customizations that I never get bored of eating it. The Madison Heights location is conveniently located right off of John R, in the plaza with Target. There's plenty of parking, and also a nice outdoor patio area. When you walk in, there is a host waiting to seat you, and then you can either order on your phone or go up to the counter to place your order. It's a very easy dining experience. And, they also offer takeout! On my last visit, I tried the pork tonkotsu ramen, and it was delicious! The broth was rich and flavorful. Stopped here for dinner on a Friday evening with my boyfriend and brother. We all got pork tonkotsu (spicy and regular). I appreciate the nice cloudy broth and the amount of toppings that came on the ramen. My brother got extra pork belly, and I thought the price for how big of a piece he got was kind of a lot ($6). The pork belly was very tender and yummy though, the spicy version has a spicy sauce torched onto it. We also got an order of the Tokyo street fries which were SO SO GOOD. The Ima semi fast casual setup near Oakland Mall has been on my list for years to try. When we walked in, my sister and I waited at the door for a few minutes before someone arrived to tell us we could pick any table. The sign said to wait to be seated but given it was a week day afternoon, it wasn't very busy. Once seated, we weren't really given much instruction but figured out that to order we needed to scan the QR code on the table where you place your order to the kitchen and can pay all in one go. The process is simple enough but the experience is lack luster. We ordered the shiitake mushroom dumplings, chicken wontons and each tried a different type of ramen. Are there vegan options? Yes and with many ways to customize your order. However, I would love to see vegan ramen labeled that vegetable focused with the vegan miso broth so that I don't have to make multiple modifications just to get a variety of veg in my ramen, it's also more expensive to create your own because you have to remove things and then pay to add different ingredients while the other ramen flavors start with more variety and options. There is a distinctly labeled vegan Pho on the menu for those that prefer pho. The miso ramen is vegan when ordered without egg, which is what I had. The photos don't do it justice to show how huge the bowls are! You get a lot but unfortunately there was almost no flavor to anything. The miso broth was bland and there wasn't any flavor coming from any of the add-ins or vegetables. It also wasn't served very warm and given we sat just across from the kitchen and it wasn't a busy afternoon, I was surprised it would have cooled down already. Overall the experience wasn't what I was hoping for. You now get greeted, then sat down at a table. You order on your phone for your table. A little snafu with ordering adult libation- both choices I wanted were not available. They were taken off the bill. The appetizer of chicken wontons with a chili sauce are not pictured because they were eaten too quickly! The ramen was tasty. Hands down the best Ramen in Detroit! The John R location seems like an odd choice, in an aging parking lot of a suburban mini mall. Usually home of Chili's or an Applebee's. Once you get past the location, the space is cool and funky, the staff is super knowledgeable and attentive. The star of the show is the Ramen, rich, full of flavor, perfect portions, authentic. I've tried Ramen all over the country, New York, SF, Boston, etc.. this is top 5 for me, definitely the best in Detroit area. It's a fun place to experience good flavor and have a wonderful meal every time you visit. The service was very good, and it was quite fast, and even the waiter was attentive, and ensuring that we had all that we needed like the napkins forks and always our water was filled. It was a wonderful pleasant service. I only feel that the ambiance should have been a little well-kept compared to the other locations. I felt this location lacked in the cleanliness part of the ambience, especially the decor. Everything was a little outdated, but the flavor in the food forgives that. It was a hit! I had been here once before, but I thought I'd try taking the kids here because hot soup is just what the cold, winter weather called for. We started off with the Tokyo street fries. Everyone loved them. They were battered fries that provided the perfect crunch, with an umami drizzle and shredded seaweed on them. Next, our soups arrived. My spicy broth was delicious and full-bodied. My daughter loved her miso soup with added baby corn, and my son slurped up all of his chicken udon noodle soup (the most difficult of all of us to please)! He did not leave a single drop.
