Okay, this place lives up to the hype. I had been wanting to try ima for forever and we finally made it out to the Madison Heights location yesterday. It was a Friday night around 7pm and packed, and the friendly hostess told us it would be a half-hour wait for a table, so we decided to sit at their little bar area, near the entrance. I normally hate sitting by doors in the middle of winter in Michigan but it was actually fairly warm. (I will say that their tiny bar stools are not made for bigger backsides, though!) Our waiter was Mike W. and he was fantastic ... he asked if we had been to ima before and when we said no, he said, "Welcome to your new food addiction!" I had an idea what I wanted to order because I had asked some friends what their ima favorites were, but I still asked him what his recommendations were, and he chose a few menu items to highlight. I ended up getting the Yaki Udon (buttered noodles, no broth) and my boyfriend got the spicy pork udon. We both agreed that my dish was the better dish; I tried his and the pork was very smoky-tasting, which isn't really my preference, too. My dish came with buttered udon noodles, some sort of (nut?), seaweed, and I added ginger beef. I was surprised to see +$3 added for the beef, since I thought it was included, but now I'm thinking probably just sesame chicken or the smoked pork is included. Overall our bill was about $35 with tip, which for two people (two entrees, no drinks) is kinda pricey, but that is my only complaint about ima. Also, be advised that Friday through Sunday is table service (aka with waiters), but Monday through Thursday is counter service; thanks to Amanda P. for the tip on that. ima seems to do very well, too - when we left, the bar area was full and people were waiting for seats. I love going here! It is a solid restaurant that does all of the food on its menu relatively well which is a very difficult thing to do. I have tried a variety of items on the menu and one of my favorites it's the crispy karage chicken! It is perfectly fried and comes fresh every single time! I have tried both the ramen and the udon and no matter which option they are both amazing! Definitely has a great balance of flavors that are true to the dish and cuisine! Service is always amazing, especially with the new transition to using toast and going digital! Overall, I would recommend! Only downside is the don rice bowl dishes. I feel there is a lot of vinegar in the dishes and it feels very monotoned. They also have A LOT of rice in this dish. I wish perhaps less rice, another side added to the dish and more sauce. read more

It's so cold here really needed something hot! Saw this on Yelp so decided to try it and it did not disappoint! I started with a hot green tea (huge tea bag), and the dumplings (it was really delicious), I had the ramen Shoyu Ramen and I added pork belly (it comes with pork loin). first time here. was out in the area for the 168 market and wanted to grab a quick bite. this was a pretty good chain restaurant. all orders are done via your phone and very little staff interaction. the curry rice bowl with fried tofu was very tasty and a quite large proportion (leftovers!). the ramen dish was tasty and eaten all up. i recommend the fried tofu to add to your dish for sure. they also have a assortment of spirits to order with your meal. the atmosphere was nothing too spectacular but decent enough. read more

I came here with my family and really wanted to love it here, but just did not. The dumpling/ potstickers were 10 dollars and it was such a small portion, the same for the clams that were too salty. I read about this establishment in the local newspaper food section a few years ago and finally had an opportunity to eat here. With a simple yet diverse Asian fusion menu including rice bowl, pho, ramen and appetizers, there's much more I'd like to try next time around. The Golden Curry rice bowl was filled with fresh root vegetables, mushroom, bok choy, and pickled ginger in a very silky curry sauce. I added both roasted tofu and ginger beef to my entrée. I didn't need to add both proteins ( but they were excellent) as I wasn't able to finish this robust portion of Asian yumminess. I also tried the shrimp dumplings that were quite good. Seen an ad recently got the hot chicken karaage ramen and knew I had to come back. I don't know why I haven't been back the food was good when I was there last and the menu was much smaller. I feel silly for always being in the area and not looking up the menu again sooner! A little bit of everything to choose from, I love that I can easily opt for what ever noodle I'd like ramen or udon. The QR was new for me here as I remember I paper menu last time and a server? I do really like the QR code concept makes this easy and you can usually modifier easier too! The ramen was delicious, very bountiful portions everything piping hot and fresh. I did expect the chicken to be spicer but I'm also the same girl who thinks buldak ramen is a pre game sooo could be me. But regardless the flavor of everything was exploding with flavor. But why is the 3 bites of a side of kimchi $3? Also I love that they are serving beer but not having a cold mug and being handed a plastic cup with ice was a bit odd and the other beer that was "chilled" was still fairly warm for a beer. From the moment we walked in the door and were greeted by the young smiling hostess to the minute we left full and with leftovers - the experience was AMAZING. Just love a place were it seemed that everyone working came by to see how our experience was and if we need anything from more water to any possible service was an amazing experience. Yummy!!!! I had been to this restaurant a few years ago and had not been quick to return. Today my friend wanted to go eat there- I wasn't that excited about going, but I went anyways. I am sooo glad that I did!! This time the food was amazing. I asked the cashier what he would recommend and he recommended the Spicy Tori Ramen- it was soooo good. The broth was so much more flavorful- yet it wasn't real hot -just had a little kick to it. We've had Ima on our list for a while now and finally decided to meet friends here for lunch. We drove around the perimeter of the strip mall where GPS sent me and didn't find Ima. So we called them and learned that they share a stand alone building in the parking area closer to the street; then we located it and went in. We quickly learned how the process here works that is to step up to the counter to place your order, they give you a number to place on your table, then you sit down and they will bring your order out. So we made our selections, ordered, helped ourselves to water, and sat down at our table. Our friends ordered Tori Paitan Ramen with Pork and Curry Udon with Ginger Beef. My wife ordered Shoyu Ramen with Smoked Pork and I ordered Unagi-Don. Everything was about average, not bad but we've had better. My wife, who is from Japan, liked how the eggs in the Ramen were prepared but the broth was just OK and the noodle texture wasn't the best. My Unagi-Don was a good portion size and the flavor was actually pretty good. But the eel seemed overcooked and fell apart when I picked pieces up. Things were not really authentic but I don't think that was what they are going for. The staff were all friendly and helpful in explaining things to us and answering our questions. The place was clean and new. I did feel the pricing is a bit high compared to similar dishes at other restaurants we have tried. So!!! I guess they made an IMA here huh?? People say they have good Ramen here too... ok... now that I'm here, let's get to the reviewing. Smoked Salmon Potato Salad: This is a rather strong dish. The flaky perfectly executed salmon on top of a well balanced potato salad garnished with salmon egg. Tastes like a fiesta in my mouth. Definitely worth ordering. Sake Clams: Forget white wine, sake all the way baby!! The gingery buttery sake broth is just to die for. Plus the clams we perfect, no grit, expertly cleaned. My mouth definitely appreciates it. Unagidon: My friend ordered this dish. I had a taste of it and it's definitely hella weak. Veggies were hella bland and the unagi was lacking the smoke finish. This bowl is a bit of a let down. Tori Paitan Ramen: I added the pork to it and it was rather weak. The broth was weak, the pork loin was tough, the noodles were a bit on the soggy side. Oh, on a good note, the soft boiled egg was perfect. See,, if I was to just come here and chill and drink and order shareables. This joint would probably get a solid 5. But the main events were a bit lackluster. The Detroit location hits it out of the park. I'm afraid this one was created for the people who are still prejudiced to go into the city. 2 stars because the ramen at that buffet in the back of the mall area is better than the ones served here. Plus one star for the impeccable front of the line staff and the sake clams. 3 star is fitting IMO. Urban Ramen is the weakest Ramen joint in Detroit... i'd rather eat the ramen there. We finally decided to give this place a try. It has an independent parking lot to the building, which makes it convenient. The atmosphere reminded us of an Asian Panera bread. Basically you go and grab the number, go order at the counter, and they bring the food out to you while looking for your number. There's very minimal interaction with the food staff, and you basically do everything on your own from getting water to ordering to basically bussing your stuff and packing a to go. They do have that required tipping mechanism built-in to the checkout, and stare at you until you tip them at least 20%. Not a fan of force tipping, especially since it's basically self service. I'd rather tip because I want to not because I made to especially when there's zero interaction with the food staff. The food was fine I had the spicy pork Ramen and the other person had the spicy pork udon. Neither one of those are all that special, we paid about $20 per person. It's something I probably could've thrown together with a few grocery items from the local Asian store. Not something I'll come back for, since it was not very extraordinary. We've been to Ima twice in the last year. Great food! I'm not sure when they changed their service but previously was a traditional sit down restaurant, now it's almost fast casual. Oh my gosh. Best ramen I've had so far in metro Detroit! I know there's been a debate on which place is better, IMA or urban. This place is hands down way better than urban for me. I know some people may disagree. I have never been to the original location in Detroit. This place is so convenient for me and many others. The ambiance is cool. The staff is cool. Their dishes are cool. For what I know so far, I only like their noodles soups so far. Except the pho. I never tried it here and probably never will haha. I love the ramen! It's nice flavor and noodles are cooked nicely. And it's reasonable price! They obviously have pork loin instead of chashu but I can't complain and they do chicken bone broth instead or pork bone. I also love the sesame grinder and togarashi you can add that's on the tables you sit at. You must get the yuzu punch! My favorite. It's a must get every time I come. I tried a hand full of their appetizers. I mainly would recommend the sake clams if you're a fan of ginger and citrusy sour taste and the smoked salmon potato salad. What I don't like about this place is that it's a lot of stool style seating for those that have less than 2 people or less and it's not comfortable for me. Especially this season! I have a lot of layers! The unagi don was a thumbs down for me. I just like tomo a lot better for it. The yakiudon was blehhh. Unless you get a really fragrant protein with it, the buttered noodles flavor is so weird. It smells like popcorn. And tastes like unsalted butter. Their food is fantastic. I've tried their spicy pork udon, chicken pho, and chicken bites, and they were all delicious. They also have an interesting selection of sakes if you feel like trying something a bit different. Also, their COVID setup is great -- plexiglass separating the cash register from customers, clear markers to keep social distance while in line, and the staff all wears masks. Only reason I don't give them 5 stars is they're a bit pricey compared to some of the other ramen/pho/udon places around, and they nickel-and-dime on things like hot sauce for your pho (which is usually available without question at most Vietnamese restaurants). For example, substituted pork for the chicken in the Pho. It was a smoked pork, so quite a difference from a traditional pho ingredient. Very good, but, I am more of a traditionalist when it comes to pho. Also, all add ons, like peppers, pepper oil, basil, etc were already in the pho, so no self expression in creating your pho. I bet, if you asked for it on the side, they would do it. Hubby had a ramen bowl, with extra ramen ($2 upcharge). It was a beautiful dish, and he loved it. A staff member suggested he add the house chili oil, since he likes it hot! Boy, that was HOT! But, remained flavorful, and he loved it. We also tried the pickle plate, and the spicy tuna and taro. This is just as delicious as all the other ima locations, which I've been going to for a long time now, but somehow had managed to miss stopping at this one. It's great!! I didn't try the Kara-age bites or anything that seems maybe specific to this location, because I'm kind of predictable at this point. I almost always either get an eel bowl or forest udon with the protein subbed for pork, haha. As usual the portions were generous enough to make me feel full but not too much to eat, and everything was well seasoned. The outdoor LED menu was interesting looking. I didn't check that out too much but I loved the layout of this location - very midcentury and cool. I would love to actually eat in for dinner when it's not covid times. You order at a window, and bring back a number to a table, (if you can find an open one) and your meal is brought to you when it is ready. We ordered the forest mushroom Udon and the Miso ramen. You can add many items to your meal like sesame chicken or smoked wild mushrooms, so be sure to check the list for something that may intrigue you. The bowls of steamy broth were chock full of noodles and nori and tofu. What a great meal on a cold winter day. For under 15$ per person we were well fed and brought leftovers home.
