I have heard such great things about Ima, and I wanted to support a Black-owned business - what better time to try? I meant to take photos of the food to attach to this review, but... it smelled so good, and we were done eating by the time I remembered. C'est la vie! We ordered two of the Yaki Udon bowls for an anniversary lunch: the Yaki Butter Udon and Curry Yaki Udon. Both dishes were truly phenomenal. From the smell to the presentation (even with takeout!) to the flavor, I was thoroughly impressed. The Yaki Butter bowl has a sesame-butter sauce and a good amount of mushrooms. That sauce is so savory and addictive. And the Curry bowl had so many vegetables - bean sprouts, cauliflower, celery, and that tiny corn that I love. I really appreciate the abundant vegetarian and vegan options that Ima has, as well as the pork-free broth. Everything on the menu looks amazing, and I can't wait to go back and try more. read more

Wowza! I think of myself as highly critical of Ramen and Udon, it's so easy to mess up. This place hits the nail on the head. Covid: online ordering, walk-in pick up, masks required and outdoor patio seating. I ordered online, I was hesitant because I have requests like No Egg. It's on the toast website and so easy. So many options for add ins too! I got butter udon with pork, like Mac and cheese, amazing sauce, full of flavor. Also got the Shoyu Ramen with chicken. Slightly disappointed that the chicken is sliced like lunch meat, I prefer roasted chicken thighs, which is what you see in Denver's Ramen scene fyi. But the broth had great flavor, you can tell they put lots of time and effort into making their broth and we appreciate and notice!!We will be back! read more

I've heard a lot of rumblings about this place, but have never had the time or energy to venture out and try it. It's out of the way for me, regardless of which location I choose. But, I had some time to kill today, so I went and checked it out. Walking in, the place is nicely decorated and is a fast casual dining establishment. I wasn't quite sure where the line started to order, but I found my way to the register as people flowed in. The place was quite busy, and there were only a few tables left. I studied the menu and finally wandered up to the counter. I have never been here before, so the guy at the register helped me navigate the menu. they have Ramen, which are thinner noodles and Udon, which are thicker, heartier noodles. I've had both, but chose ramen this time and went with the shoyu dish which came with chicken. I went and sat down with my number, and the food came out about 10 minutes later. I got a nice hearty serving, and loved the appearance of my dish. They have tons of chopsticks at the tables with soy sauce along with napkins. They also have a seperate drink station with a few other supplies there as well. Digging in, my soup was fabulous. Very hearty and full of flavor. The portion sizes are on the larger side, which I loved. I had some leftovers, and was provided a to go container to take home my leftovers for later. I really enjoyed my food here. While it's not the cheapest place in town, I love how it's set up. The menu is easy to understand and read, staff answered all my questions and were really helpful with guiding me on what to get. They also have some spicy dishes here as well, along with appetizers and booze. I will be returning in the future and loved the fact that this place is here now, so I don't have to schlep all the way downtown to try this place. If you have a chance, go check it out. read more

I had to get up myself and get water. The service was on a Sunday afternoon. Regardless you should always be aware of your surroundings and be attentive to do guests. If you aren't familiar with Japanese food and wanted to see how it looks, then this place is okay. The food isn't really authentic Japanese, although plating wasn't bad. Once you go in, they basically let you pick where to sit. You order by scanning the QR code available at each table, and pay for your food at the time of ordering. This is a place that is easily overlooked. It's in the Target parking lot, next to Jimmy John's. After shopping at Kohl's, we stopped by here on a whim and very happy with the experience. We received friendly service and the food was hot/fresh. The chicken wontons are small bites, a decent appetizer for one. I enjoyed the sauce, very tasting with a little zing. The Curry Yaki Udon was delicious. I added shrimp and it was a wow meal. Before the add-on it was $13...a bit pricey for lunchtime noodles. The meal was well-prepared and packed with incredible flavor. If you liver curry and ginger, this is a great dish! Another positive is that they offered a small selection of beers. My sister told me about this place. She said shes been to both the one here and detroit. Seating : its a smaller setting. I like how there are tables but also a counter. There is more seating during the summer because they provide outside seating. Food : I went there to try the ramen, I wasn't a big fan. I felt like there wasn't that much flavor in it. And I got the spicy Ramen too. But I love their udon! I usually get the spicy pork udon. It was really flavorful and I usually get extra meat. The broth is really delicious!! So glad we stopped in here! There was a wait but they got us in within 15 minutes. The staff was very kind and helpful when picking what we wanted. I noticed a lot of the broths were chicken, vegetarian or seafood based which was unique for ramen. Normally you just see beef or pork. Our food came out very quickly and was delicious! We tried the shoyu ramen and the seafood kimchi ramen. It seemed super clean here as well! I'm not sure about the bathrooms as we didn't use them. I love Ima. I've been like idk maybe a dozen times?! They do be busy but there is always seating. I stick to roast chicken ramen. Mainly because it's so freaking good and why ruin a good thing. This was my first visit and I didn't know what to expect. Since I'm unfamiliar with the food here I asked a lot of questions. I decided to try the Salmon potato salad as an appetizer and a dry saki for my aperitif. I really liked it. Who knew that salmon and potato salad could be this good. My main course was the Tori udon with a Stillwater, saki style, saison. It was pretty good. The dish looked nice with the egg, the greens and the chicken all floating above the thick udon noodles. But after Covid I don't know if they changed chefs or not but the broth and noodles were significantly less savory and delicious as I remember it to be. They mixed up my order with someone at my table because we both ordered pork ramen but in different flavors.( there was only 2 of us and We didn't switch back because we already ate too much before we realized) even while eating my ramen I was unimpressed with the flavors and lack of depth. Just salty with no underlying profiles. Instant ramen has a better flavor profile than the one I was served. What really ticked me off was that somehow, they managed to burn my noodles?? That's in a broth?? The bottom of my small and overpacked bowl had burnt and crispy noodles which were all stuck together yet soggy noodles on the top. It ultimately made it impossible to eat half of it. I also ordered kimchi on the side which was a +$3.00 charge for the smallest sized sauce container? I was a little upset because the kimchi was clearly not stored properly. It was rotten and tasted off which really stuck out to my tastebuds and nose(I'm Asian and grew up eating kimchi, Its obvious when it's gone bad) not okay if I'm paying for and consuming it. Finally tried this Maddy Heights location for Ima. The potsticker/dumplings were kind of whatever. Didn't really taste like anything and didn't work for me. I didn't even notice this resturant, thou it's actually so close to where I live, until it was referred highly by a random friend. So I decided to finally give it a try. I ordered their classic miso ramen since I was not a big fan of ramen or udon and the first on the menu was supposed to be the best seller. After you ordered at the counter the food would be delivered to you by the number in your hand. The ramen was presented in a fancy shape as you could see from the pic I posted. This is important at least for me, since I believed food should be looking good to make eaters feel better. The broth was a bit salty but not unacceptable. The tofu tasted great and mushroom was a sparkle. The main and only flaw was the ramen itself, for a Chinese, it was basically instant noodle. Nothing handmade or fresh. But I guess it's ok, it's just different definition of ramen. The resturant was decorated in a very modern and bright way. Everything looks young and clean. The staff seemed friendly. So I finally find a decent source of Asian fusion cuisine - thanks to my kids - who have since latched onto this spot. Although it is on the main road and close to plenty of shopping, it can be sometimes easy to miss. Plenty of parking nearby, sandwiched as it is between Target and 168 - a popular Asian market. One orders at the counter, you get a very visible order number and the food is brought to you. I must say, they seem to have figured out which popular Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese items to carry, as they are easy to understand and order. Also fair amount of Vegetarian options, major ingredients are listed on all items. Self serve for drinks, napkins and cutlery. They do have alcohol on the premises and a nice to know tip - they have plenty of outdoor seating too! I tried the octopus appetizer, nice fresh taste to it,well balanced with the cucumbers. For my main I got the Tori Udon with chicken. Note - the bowls serving sizes are quite decent and will fill you up. Additional tip: they have fresh pepper flakes in a tiny bottle on each table and they are hot! I also requested some hot sauce on the side, which is a mix of habaneros and 'ghost' pepper paste. Tons of smokiness to it! My party companions ordered Kimchi Rice, Pork Udon and Ramen bowls. Everyone was satisfied with the taste, quality and quantity. The broths are decent. What can I add now that Ima has been named restaurant of the year? I was a bit surprised that a non-table service restaurant could win the award, but the food definitely is top quality. Let me start with some non-food things. You place your order with a cashier (she is very knowledgeable about the food) and then find a table. Ima is busy and that means competition for a table. There are some high tops, counter seating around the windows and kitchen and some regular tables. This is not a place to linger when 20 people are waiting in line to order. I would also suggest reading these reviews and studying the menu before ordering. You will get impatient people behind you in line if the first time you have looked at the menu is when you order. Third, ramen is highly customizable. You can add extra eggs, protein, veggies, noodles etc. to what is offered. That's why it is good to look at the menu. I highly recommend trying the "snack and share" terms since they are wildly good. We had the pickle plate and smoked salmon potato salad which were amazing. By the way, ask for a fork for the potato salad. I'm good with chopsticks but you want to get every part of the dish at once. Yes, you will not finish your bowl of ramen, but they have take home containers. If you have not lost interest in this review already, the ramen is awesome. I had the spicy tori ramen. Incredibly rich and flavorful broth, the chicken was wonderful and every bite was spot on. I would add the smoked pork loin to the chicken. The Spicy pork udon and tori paitan ramen were said to be excellent as well. Plan your visit and you will not be disappointed. After waiting about 30 minutes for our table we were seated and promptly given menus. We then went up to the counter to order. My son has a sesame allergy and I discussed this with the gentleman taking my order. He spoke to the chef/cook in the back and they said they can make the Tori Paitan Ramen without sesame. They seemed confident in this and I didn't question them any further. He also typed sesame allergy in our order. I paid for our meal and sat down with the family. We were given our appetizers after about 10 minutes and after another 10-12 minutes 4/5 main courses arrived. After about 15-20 minutes we were asked how our meal was and I inquired about my son's dish. Soon after we were informed that they would not prepare it as they weren't sure it would be sesame free. Which begs the question - why take our order in the first place, confirm with the chef that they can make it without the tofu and sesame oil and then tell us more than 40 minutes later that they weren't preparing it. And if someone didn't come by to ask how our meal was, how long would we have to wait before being told that his meal wasn't being prepared. If you're craving ramen and have any real dietary needs Ima is not your place. I'd recommend Shun Ramen and Sushi further down the street. The seating area isn't big but they are very helpful/friendly and the food is absolutely fantastic. Other options include Shiromaru or Sapporo Sushi in Troy - both have great food for a fair price and won't waste your time or money. I am confident that these 3 can take care of you if you have any peanut, tree nut, fish/shellfish or sesame allergy. read more

There has to be some ground rules with this ima. First, it's not the one that won the award, that's the one in Detroit. It hasn't been open that long and there are surely some kinks to work out. Also, ramen hasn't been a major thing in the area for that long so one good spot is probably getting a little too much love and that might be what's going on here. This shop is a tad more casual as you order in line and wait. The ingredients don't feel as fresh and as other reviewers have said, the noodles aren't as good. The tacos are somewhat weird, but probably more impressive than the Yaki Udon I had. It was good, but it felt kind of... fake. I enjoyed it, but wanted a little more. Everything seemed to be lacking a certain freshness and my tastebuds weren't blown off. These are good noodles, but I'm not entirely sold on this new location yet. I AM ADDICTED! I really don't know how else to say it because, literally -- I'm obsessed. Whenever my boyfriend asks me where I wanna go out to eat, this place is always one of my top choices! The flavor in their food is just UNBEATABLE! I have always said this and I'll say it again -- whenever you go to a noodle place, the flavor is all in the broth. That will make or break your ramen or udon dish and they hit it in the nail, every time. One of the workers there spoke to my niece and told her that they let their broth boil for hours on end to get that delicious flavor, and as a noodle connoisseur, I can taste it!!!
