Truth--I live right above the shop but could only look in longingly until they recently extended their hours. Now I usually pop in on Friday after work for "Sips & Stems" to talk to Carol about her beautiful flowers and enjoy a glass of wine. They have stems to buy, bouquets, potted plants, the works. I've seen some arrangements they've put together for events and weddings (presumably) and they are to die for. My experience with Ilex has been primarily my wedding which he did 2 months ago. Without much direction from me he came up with beautiful arrangements and bouquets. The colors were right on and he captured the bold/sculptural elements that I desired. I know the proprietor from a lot of the event planning work he has done at the building I work in and I felt 100% confident in his abilities the whole time. After our initial meeting and the price came out a bit higher than we had discussed Andrew carefully reworked what we needed to accommodate the budget. From our first meeting, when we had no idea what we wanted, to our last final detail meeting, Andrew's knowledge and creativity worked it's magic. If I could give 10 stars to this Boston gem I would. Andrew and his team did an amazing job at my daughter's recent wedding at The State Room. The chuppah was so magnificent--orbs filled with orchids draped down the back--that the staff declared it the most beautiful they had seen. The photographer wanted to enter a picture of it into a wedding contest. The table flowers were vibrant, lush, perfect. Everyone commented on them and the ones I brought home lasted for over 2 weeks. Andrew was a dream to work with, despite the frequent changing of minds. He was kind and patient and had wonderful ideas. At the end of the evening, when we were wondering how to get the extras back to the hotel, Andrew saved the day by offering to bring them in his van at 1:30 a.m.! Ilex handled the flowers for my father's funeral. I work in the Back Bay and have had numerous occasions to walk by their South End storefront and admire their floral artistry. As a greenhouse builder and lover of flowers, Dad had a gift for making wonderful floral arrangements, and it was very important to us that his flowers were beautiful and different.... not the typical mums and glads funeral dreck. Why only 4? Because I have nothing to compare it to. Friendly service, good taste, and what I felt to be reasonable prices. Here's what happened: As soon as I entered I was greeted by a friendly man sitting at the table. I told him I'd like something "... bright and happy that says hello without being overbearing." after just a couple moments of trial and error he chose three great flowers for me... A pretty little shop full of pretty little delightful flora! The rows of flowers look like you're in an adult candy shop with a variety that is truly exceptional. Andrea S. and I (see her review) pop in for "Sips and Stems" on Fridays and buy the bouquet they are selling especially for the party. Carol, one of the shop owners, is incredibly friendly and knows her stuff! I've also bought a cute little plant in a great pot there and it only ran me $12! Great design, awesome staff. Wish I could blow money on flowers all the time! read more

Truly unique... great service and a great presentation. We got my mom flowers here for Thanksgiving, and they were seasonally appropriate and creatively arranged. I would highly recommend them, especially if you don't want the "same old, same old" from one of the chains. read more

I have used Ilex several times and cannot begin to articulate on how wonderful the service is and how amazing the flowers are. I recently had planters done for my house and they were amazing. Within an hour of placing them in the front of the house the neighbors were coming over to inquire where they came from because they were so striking. Ilex flowers has their own unique style- Very Modern and almost Zen like. I love it! I was given flowers from Ilex and they were beautiful and lasted longer than most! They bouquet came in a nice white vase and I loved how the arrangement came with white roses that were open and also with a bunch of flowers that were not open but opened later for a stunning arrangement that lasted days! read more

Andrew is a pleasure to work with! I have had several occasions when I have needed elaborate and unique floral arrangements- and he has been completely willing to work with me to come up with great concepts. The flowers he delivered always exceed my expectations- beautiful, fresh, exotic. Andrew is also very savvy about letting me email photos of flowers or other arrangements as inspiration, as well as allowing me to provide the vases/containers I wish to use. Totally agree with the prior reviews -- Andrew and Carol are amazing -- 10 star work. They designed the most beautiful purple and ivory wedding flowers for our party -- a mix of the best of the season and artistic buds. Initially we planned to have my (now) wife's sister and MOH, who is also a florist, do our wedding flowers, but when that became too hectic for her with all her other wedding responsibilities, we hired Ilex only a month out from the event (though please don't do this to them unless you must!) We had one extremely productive meeting, called/emailed back and forth to finalize the plan and then what was delivered to us wedding day was SO BEYOND even our expectations. My mom is now hard at work on a bouquet keepsake, so I'll have the flowers in some form forever. I've been a bridesmaid in a handful of weddings, and these were the only flowers bridesmaids made a priority to take home. And my wife's florist sister -- was beyond impressed. Planning a wedding can be so overwhelming -- trust me, hire Carol and Andrew and you'll have no worries at all. All the staff is very knowledgeable, courteous and they always go above and beyond when it comes to making sure you're getting what you expect.
