When we came in for our reservation, we were instaltly greeted by the owners, a cute husband and wife who have poured their heart and soul into this restaurant. From the moment we entered, we knew we were in for something special. We started with the Rustico Appetizer, which was a great mix of Tuscan classics. We had the famous John Travolta pasta which was absolute perfection. We also had the pear ravioli and gnocchi, which were excellent. Pretty much everything was excellent. Not going to lie I was a little bit concerned coming in here as I noticed that my family and I were only among Americans and no locals. Ordered spaghetti with seafood and pork cutlet among other dishes as well as florentine steak. Loved the pork cutlet the most! Florentine steak was a bit too large for us considering our other orders. I feel as though the flavor wasn't so evenly distributed because of how thick and dense it was. "The only other masterpiece we experienced that matches this dinner was Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel," said my 19-yr-old daughter to Claudio, the owner of this well-named Florentine restaurant. I frantically searched for a restaurant upon our arrival and we went before 8 to see if we could secure a table at this Michelin-starred restaurant. They sat us on the patio and we had no idea that this was only the first miracle of the evening. Claudio interpreted the menu for us and we gave him full reign on the first courses, only choosing 2 of our 3 pastas. He brought the vegetable antipasti plate, which was DIVINE and then hot starters, I can't even catalogue them all--one of each for us to share. He surprised my husband with John Travolta's pasta and brought us each a bite on our own plates and a knife for my husband "to defend his plate," which was fully called for! The dish was perfection! I can describe it like a heavenly vodka sauce, though Claudio holds tight the secret recipe. I had the pear ravioli (splendid!) and my daughter had the burrata ravioli with cherry tomatoes and basil. Just when you think you cannot eat another bite, they roll out the dessert tray and you hear yourself ordering desserts! There was not a thing we put in our mouths that was not the best thing we had eaten. We stumbled upon this small restaurant as we were walking back to our AirBNB. This is not only a restaurant, but a warm, friendly, gastronomical experience! The owners are on sight making sure everyone is happy and all questions are answered. The service was impeccable with kind and knowledgable waiters. I liked that when we asked for wine suggestions that they did not start with the most expensive wine. One other thing I liked was little "surprises" of small appetizer bites they brought out while awaiting our meal. The owners were kind and family oriented with great senses of humor. It was my husband's 70th birthday and they turned off all the lights and lit a candle on top of tiramisu and everyone in the restaurant sang to him. Honestly, this place is very overrated. The John Travolta pasta was WAY overpriced considering that it consisted of 3 noodles in some basic sauce. The food wasn't bad by any means and was certainly satisfying - I just expected more given that it has high ratings on here and people rave about it on TikTok. Short review: please give your hard earned money to ANY other restaurant in Florence, including McDonald's. In such an awesome city with incredible restaurants (and people), please do not fall for this trap like I did. I have never been taken so badly in my life. Long review: Before I get into it, I want to try to build some credibility with the people reading these reviews. I am very hesitant to write a bad review. My wife and I travel a lot and the number one thing a tour guide or a restaurant owner will tell you is that a single bad review can really hurt their business. A single bad review can negate hundreds of good reviews. I am also from NYC, so I am familiar with sky high prices. Said another way, if we have a bad experience or something was not worth the cost, we usually just shrug it off and move on. Hopefully that gives me some credibility and explains why I almost feel compelled to write this ridiculous review. Not sure where to start? Maybe at the 7 pieces of asparagus for 21.50 Euros...Or the 4 raviolis for 23.50 Euros...To be fair to the restaurant those raviolis also had a slice of pear next to it. Finally, the restaurants "speciality" and "most famous dish", the John Travolta pasta. A pasta that is so good, Johnny T had it one night and came back the next day and had it again! It was 6 pieces of rigatoni for 44 Euros...Of course he came back, he made eating two slices of pizza at once famous. He probably wanted to enjoy a double digit number of macaroni pieces before he agreed to let the pasta be named after him... You might be thinking, well maybe these were appetizers? These were main courses. And for the elegant service that this fine institution provides they charge a 6 Euros per person sit down fee and a 10% service fee. If you are going to mug a tourist, you might as well go for grand larceny... If you are still reading, do not worry, I am almost done. What makes this robbery worse is that the owner comes over to your table after each course and asks you how the food was with a BIG smile on his face. After the first course of watery asparagus, we said that it tasted great. After the second course of 2 ravioli each (4 in total), we said it was good but a little small. To which he responded, you should not have split the ravioli entree. He then insisted that the next time we come that we both order the each entree. Yes, you heard that right, the problem tonight was under ordering... Speaking of John Travolta and his movies, after the final course of 3 rigatoni each (6 in total), I harnessed the same level of calmness that Samuel L. Jackson uses in the final scene of Pulp Fiction when I said give me the check. I paid my 126.50 Euro bill in cash and walked home with my wife as we laughed out loud talking about that 45 minute heist. You read that correctly, we had a three course dinner in an Italian restaurant in 45 minutes. It could have been 35 minutes, but they take 10 minutes of your time to walk you through their menu. Why I felt compelled to write this review when I would normally walk out the door and laugh, is I have never experienced this level of egregiously bad behavior before. To charge people 67.5 Euros for 10 pieces of pasta, ask them how it was after with the big "I got you" smile on your face, and tell them that they should have ordered more food is criminal. And COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE, if there was a double digit number of pasta on our plates, I would not write this review. I would say the restaurant business is a tough one and they have to make money to stay open. But that was not the issue here. Last thing - I am not telling you not to go to this restaurant, I am simply just trying to warn you that this is a complete scam. And despite this incredibly over the top review, I am not really mad at the restaurant because there will always be places like this wherever you go in the world. I am mad at the hundreds of positive reviews across the various platforms (Yelp, Google, Tripadvisor, etc.) from fellow tourists. I could understand going to the place, getting ripped off, and laughing it off as a tourist trap, BUT to give the place a 4 or 5 star review after they just took you for 6.75 per piece of pasta (67.5 divided by 10 pieces of pasta), charged you a sit down fee of 6 Euros per person and a 10% service fee on top is astonishing. This place also appears to have won an award from TripAdvisor in 2023... I am going to be posting this review on every single platform there is. P.S. the restaurant owner will most likely text you about making a reservation. The chicken and veal cutlet might have been the driest meats I've ever had...there's not enough sauces in Italy to make it taste good. They were both 1000% frozen and microwaved. My husband and I had a fabulous lunch here one cold January day in Florence. Il Profeta is an elegant restaurant with homemade Tuscan specialties and charming pale yellow decor. We first came here 5 years ago at the recommendation of The Westin Florence where we were staying on our honeymoon and we never forgot it. To begin lunch, I had ravioli stuffed with fresh mozzarella and basil in a light tomato broth. My husband had gnocchi with a creamy pecorino sauce that was stupendously good. Afterwards, I had lemon scallopine and he had porcini scallopine, both of which were flavorful and delicious. The waiter, Napi, was gracious, attentive and spoke good English. He explained the menu very well and offered us complimentary bruschetta with homemade olive oil at the beginning as well as an amazing tiramisu at the end. Last of all, I can assure you that they DO TAKE CREDIT CARDS despite comments from prior reviewers. We paid for our meal with our Chase Visa credit card with no issues at all. A short walk from our hotel, this was a surprise from our tour director. We came as a group and I thought the special attention was just for us, but was pleasantly surprised to see the owner approaching most, if not all, tables with a similar detailed description of the menu highlights. With such an expansive menu, it's always nice to have a selection of chef specials. I did start with a regular suggested item: Calamaretti su insulate di carciofi croccant. This was simple amazing. The calamari was very tender, simply flavored with olive oil; I just had to slowly savor every bite. And the presentation was beautiful. I then went one of the highlights of the menu: Al Gratinato del Granduca. I rarely am wowed by presentation alone, but having the pasta served this way was incredible. It seems the fish may be a bit of a secret but I will say it was a delicious departure from most of the al dente pastas served with a paucity of sauce. This was swimming in a delicious truffle sauce that I could not stop eating... fara las scarpetta... their delicious bread was perfect for getting the last bits of the sauce. If you are like me and like the crispy cheese at the edges of your dish, don't forget to nibble on the bowl . For dessert, I opted for the apple tart. It swan in a sweet custard sauce... and finding more inside the apple was a pleasant surprise. I doubt there is much of anything here that wouldn't be delectable. After a long day touring to Cinque Terrence and the back to Florence, we were passing this establishment on our way to our hotel. Looking charming we decided to stop for dinner. Ever hear the expression, "Can't tell a book by its cover?" So applicable here. First, after five days in Florence, first time with a per person cover charge, which we did not catch until getting our bill. Then both couples asked to split the plate, yet only one received it. Then one diner ordered a Cappocino, and again the billed showed two! Finally when the bill was presented, it had on it in printing, "Make Us Happy, Pay With Cash!" We're on vacation, not carrying cash! Further more we asked for two bills, each couple, which all other establishments were more than happy to accommodate their patrons. Not here, server said, one bill, we need to figure the split. Then when the additional cappucino was pointed out, he took the bill and each credit card, back into the restaurant. Then out came a female (looked like the owner) with a definite chip on her shoulder, with two separate checks, not accurate to the orders of each, firmly planted the cards and bills and said, "Here you can pay now!" Then to ice the evening, she walked away, and behind her back to me, gave the universal, middle finger salute! Talk about ugly Americans, hell no!! This was a truly pissed off Italian restaurant owner, who felt slandered by questions from a party of four. So this restaurant was recommended to me by a friend from Los Angeles, and he loved it so much he went 3 nights in a row while visiting Florence! Needless to say the bar had been set high, but I was still so excited to try it. Upon entering, the owner himself greeted us and sat us on the patio by our request. Let me tell you if you enjoy food and people that love food as much as you do, Claudio the the owner is the most exceptional host you can find. Family owned since 1979 I believe he said, and everything made in house. He really makes you feel at home in his restaurant. We started with the garlic bread bruschetta, and then Claudio brought a small sampler of cheeses and pâté for us to taste on the house. Next we shared a purple potato gnocchi with pumpkin sauce that paired so wonderfully. After that was of course the "John Travolta Special" which had the most flavorful and unique sauce. One more treat from Claudio before we were done was the pear ravioli, paired with an almost bitter cheese to offset the sweetness of the pear, awesome! From stay to finish I knew this was going to be a meal to remember. We are not only about good food, but exquisite service to go with it, and that was what we experienced throughout the whole meal. *I suggest emailing him through his restaurant website to make a reservation, and explain to him your desire to try his food. That's what we did to make sure we were able to have a table reserved before arriving to town. This way he remembered our email upon arriving and we started the night with a connection already! Il Profeta is located in Florence about a 10-12 minute walk from the Santa Maria Novella train station. From the Port of Livorno where our cruise ship docked it was about 1 hour 10 minutes bus drive out to Firenze. (Bus ride can be 30 euros pp) The special pasta they serve here is the "John Travolta" Pasta which my cousins recommended to me. They claim it to be the best pasta they've ever had. At a pretty penny for pasta (33 euro) I was apprehensive about ordering it, but I'll admit it was excellent and something very special to this restaurant! The portion is a small portion (caveat) but the way John Travolta apparently ate it was by finishing the extra pasta sauce with bread, which fills you up. For dessert, the Profiteroles were delicious with the homemade hot chocolate poured over! read more
