My daughter's favorite South Bay Italian restaurant is J.Trani in San Pedro and they are closed on Tuesdays and while I also love J.Trani, I am very glad we ended up at Bettolino Kitchen that night. I'd been twice before and remember it being good despite the experience we witnessed our first night when a blind date went very, very poorly before they even ordered dinner. The couple sits down and she didn't like his demeanor at all. He seemed cocky and smug right away. We could tell it wasn't going to work at all. She says, "Well, you're not my type". At one point, he threatens not to pay but ends up paying. She continues, "Do you want me to lie to you?...You're free to leave" as she was intent on finishing her drink. She does and says, "I'm just going to leave now." And while I digressed, I am sorry they didn't have an opportunity to eat some of Bettolino Kitchen's fantastic food. The wife (who rightly declares in my below video that she was celebrating her "Birth Day", too) ordered the Pretty in Pink cocktail ($16) - Cazcanes Tequila, Cherry Blossom Syrup, Orange Liqueur, Fresh Citrus - and very much enjoyed it. I ordered the Fig Loves Bourbon ($16) with Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon, Fig Puree, Balsamic and Orange Bitters because it just sounded too good and unusual to resist. And it was fantastic. Having just been in Hollywood where drinks were obscenely meteoric at $21 apiece, I really appreciate the more terrestrial prices. Yummy bread is complimentary which is nice because I hate having to pay for a basket of bread. We ordered the Brussels & Balsamic ($15) to start and if you told me back in the '80s, they'd have brussel sprouts on restaurants' menus in the 2010s and 2020s and be charging $15 for 'em, I would have thought you crazy! I'm really just kidding. This dish was insanely good AND it has pancetta and quality ingredients...the rosemary croutons added a nice crunchy texture in the mix. I highly recommend you order these tiny bald-headed old man tight-leafed bundles of tasty joy. 3 out of our group of 5 ordered the Bolognese ($26) and loved it. The Del Mare ($36) pasta called out to me and holy smokes, this could be one of my favorite pasta dishes ever. Linguini with halibut, lobster, shrimp, scallops, capers, green Italian olives and cherry tomatoes in a spicy tomato sauce. I would order this dish over and over and over again. The seafood and pasta is perfectly cooked and pure brilliance with the bright freshness of the cherry tomatoes, capers and green olives just putting the whole thing to bed beautifully. Our server Rich was great, too. We brought a bottle of wine but it had turned. Thankfully, we weren't charged for it and just ordered a couple glasses of delicious Italian red instead. My daughter also wanted "Nothing Bundt Cakes'" mini-bundtlets for dessert and again, thankfully, there was no lame "cake cutting fee" we've been charged in the past elsewhere. We had plenty so this proud Pop witnessed his daughter give 4 of them to the kids at the next booth over. Ambience is lovely and bright with comfy booths and a cute little bar inside although if I'm remembering correctly, I may prefer the moody black interior they used to have. Bettolino KItchen has a great Happy Hour every single day from 2:30pm-5:30pm ($3 off starters, wines by the glass, beer and specialty cocktails), daily lunch specials from 11am-4pm as well as 50% of bottles of wines and Zero Corkage on Thursdays. Everyone likes nice gestures and discounts and so does TIKI DAVE. They also offer a weekend brunch and bikinis, I mean, bellinis and a "Date NIght Monday" where you get an appetizer, two entrees and a mini dessert for $70. As you can see, these guys deserve a thorough and fantastic review for what they're doing. TIKI DAVE can't wait to go back. I'm guessing since they're coming to a permanent closure, it only makes sense that the quality of the experience (food and service) had began to going down. We were seated immediately, so we were off to a good start. It took a bit of time for Daniel (yep! We got the same server from the last time) to come around and get our orders. It wasn't too bad since the wait gave us the opp to decide on apps and mains, so we got to put all our orders in at once. CALAMARI: Battered thin and crispy. Dash of lemon juice made it better. Quality? Yes. Quantity? Not so much. I thought it was pricey for the amount we got. PEPPERCORN POLPETTINE: Meatballs in cream sauce. Even with the whole peppercorns, the sauce was good. The Caesar had a touch of spiciness and was dressed with toasted bread crumbs, a nice touch. I had the bolognese. It was tender and meaty and the pasta had the right amount of bite.
