We actually ended up staying in Praiano and including Amalfi Coast in r itinerary b/c I really wanted to eat at this restaurant built into a cave and sitting on the cliffs of the water. Well, it wasn't worth building a trip around it, but we did really love Amalfi Coast so in the end it worked out. As for this restaurant, I wouldn't go for dinner. Food just isn't very good. If ur in the area already (not spending crazy $ to take a water taxi or drive a distance), stop by for a cocktail. Having a drink here is worth it if you're nearby so would definitely recommend that. The bar is the only portion that's part of the cave and truly, many places along Praiano and neighboring areas r built into the cliff so it's not all that special. Unless you're arriving via water taxi, the walk to this place is a lot so wear shoes that u love to hike in-lol. We paid an additional 15Euro/pp to have VIP seating right along the water. Not worth it. U could easily sit on the patio and have equal views and experience. One of the nice things about Europe is often that they don't rush u as much as US restaurants. Not here. They were ready to grab r order immediately and when we asked to start with a drink and appetizer then order in a bit, they told us they had to put in r complete order at 1 time. Seems odd since they were able to add drinks as needed, but whatevs. The linguini with anchovy (it was more of an essence) was amazing! Would totally recommend it and we don't even like anchovies. However, everything else was meh to bad. The lamb ribs were a pile of fat and not good. The filet was really overcooked so rough to eat. The tagliatelle with ragu had almost no meat in it. Probably spent $100usd pp without alcohol and would definitely not recommend for dinner. *Tip - if you're walking back up that huge hill after drinks/dinner, stop off at the hotel just above Il Pirate and have a cocktail or dessert there. They have an elevator that will take u up to the top street that u can use if you're either a guest or dining there. I promise u it's worth the $ for the ride. read more

Il Pirata was a recommendation from a family member who visited Praiano, so we had to check it out when we stayed in Positano. Definitely recommend making a reservation in advance. It took a minute to find the restaurant because you have to walk down a lot of stairs to get to the bottom of the mountain (like most places along the Amalfi Coast). The food was AMAZING -- one of the best meals when we were in Italy! I had the pasta with anchovies at the recommendation of our server; I'm not an anchovies gal, but this was DELICIOUS. BEAUTIFUL dining location on the Amalfi Coast. Don't recommend uncomfortable heels as the whole area is known for walking ant it's a bit of a walk from the main road down onto the restaurant. Food was fresh. I recommend their mussel clam dish but not their fish dish. Their calamari also missed the mark for me. None the less, a beautiful memorable atmosphere and experience. I've been stalking this place for monthssss and hoping we would have time to go!! It is hands down, one of the coolest bars we have been to. It's inside the edge of the cliff directly on the water. When I first glanced at this restaurant I was thrilled to tried the food and dine in at such a spectacular looking place. The ambiance of this place was something I haven't experienced before, with the inside area being carved into the rock formation creating a luminous cavern. Unfortunately, the area inside was too small to host our party but we got a great view by the water. On arrival the server was extremely attentive and catered to our every needs. I placed an order of calamari and espresso martini to start with as our party arrived. The calamari at first glance looked delicious but after a couple bites it was just bland and tasted like grease to be honest. Nonetheless, I finished it and was excited for the drink and entree. The espresso martini was really the highlight of the night for me. It was the perfect blend of sweetness and coffee. This really took the show from everything else. The entree, unfortunately, was also unmemorable. I had ordered the spaghetti clams excited to taste what appeared to be a tasty dish only to be disappointed. The spaghetti was fine had great flavoring but nothing to rave about. It was just bland for my taste. I did end up trying some other dishes like the ir pirata soup, which was better but nothing to scream over. Overall the experience was lovely and worth trying this cavern by the sea but don't think I'll be stoping here if I were to be given another chance. read more

Why are we in a hurry?? Pricing for the portion size borders on absurd. $30 euros. for 10 noodles and monkfish? It's beyond NYC absurd. $20 euros appropriate. Loved Il Pirata! Came here twice in our time in Praiano. Such a beautiful location. Came for lunch one day and I had the seafood pasta, delicious! Also stopped in for drinks and we had some lovely spritzs and some snacks. I just sat for an hour and looked out into the water and watched the boats come and go. Their bar is in a cave, how cool!! Outside dining was nice and breezy. You can take a scenic walk after you leave around the cliffside. A few other restaurants nearby and a little cafe in the same area. So when we first came in, we asked to be seated next to the water and the guy in charge didn't let us, presumably because you need to either have a reservation or pay extra to be seated. The food was tasty but the portion size is way too small. For 30 euros you get a pasta that is half the size you get at other restaurants. For dessert we got a pear and ricotta cheesecake and the portion was also very small. In general everything was tasty and the wait staff very friendly but just the portions too small and the "boss" who seats everyone acted snobby. read more

This a fun cave bar tucked away in the cliffs of Praiano. It was definitely hard to find but worth it once you make the trip. There is an outdoor seating area with a view of the water but the indoor "cave" section was cooler to us. My husband and I were lucky enough to have a date night at Il Pirata. When you book online, they give you an option to book a special table right on the water for a small price. Don't hesitate, it's worth it. Because it's on the water, it's a longggg walk down (and back up lol) but it was absolutely worth it. We shared the raw seafood platter and the lobster pasta for 2 - it was more than enough food. The seafood was so noticeably fresh. Delicious food, cocktails, amazing service and a beautiful backdrop. The food was good, and the staff very nice, but what ruined the experience for me was that twice during our dinner, the music was turned up to full volume in celebration of someone having a birthday or some other occasion. Immaculate vibes all around Giorgia who handled the whatsapp reservations was so kind and prompt, quickly answering my questions about WiFi and Parking (there's a parking lot right at the end of the road that you drive to by the beach where they'll park it for you for 3.50 euros/hour!) and even helping me get a lounge reservation the day before. I went on Sunday and spent a wonderful day there at the beach club, enjoying the anchovy flatbread (one of my favorite dishes so far!) and some coffee and had a dinner reservation at 7 to enjoy the sunset. Between the beach club and dinner reservation I hung out at the bar deck area and got a whole bottle of wine to write my wedding vows for my wedding next week! It was absolutely perfect and they even provided a variety of snacks. I ended up sobbing writing them (I love this man so much!) but everyone around me was so sweet. That will be a core memory for me to look back on fondly for years to come. My waitress Giulia was super sweet and helped me decide which courses to get (the pasta with the yellow tomatoes was out of this world!) and even got the owner Rino to sign their cookbook as a wedding present for me and my fiancé. He left such a sweet message and took the time to come over and chat, and really made me feel like family! I enjoyed my experience so much I went back yesterday to get more work done at the beach club, and everyone greeted me so warmly. It feels as though I made old friends and extended family in my short visit. I can't wait to bring my future husband here in a few weeks after our wedding! Lunch review: I debated on 3 or 4 stars here and ultimately went 3 Bc while the view is incredible the service was irritable and the food was pretty good! My biggest problem was that our Server was incredible rude and grumpy - and after 3 weeks in Italy (and having worked in food service) I feel as though I can distinguish between cultural differences and just irritated personnel ... we had the latter. No matter - again the view was DIVINE. Make a reservation if you want to sit on the railing but regardless - the view is insane. We had: Hugo spritz (st Germaine, prosecco, lime) - awesome Amalfi spritz (limoncello, prosecco) - fantastic Mussels app - basic but delicious Seafood risotto - salty af, but good Tagliatelle w/amberjack - good, well flavored and filling. Another amazing restaurant in Praiano! Getting to IL Pirata is quite a trek, so make sure you wear your walking shoes. But at the end of your journey, the food is more than worth it! Our waiter brought over the fresh catch of the day to let us choose from and even let my partner hold the lobster for a photo. The calamari with mint was probably my most favorite part. The entire restaurant is built into the side of the cliff, so you get amazing views of the water. We even went on a rainy day but it was still lovely and photo worthy! read more

Wow! My favorite restaurant we went to during our 10-day stay in Italy. II Pirata was a short walk from our Villa and we heard it had some amazing views. It's a little hidden, but there are signs from the main street that direct you to the restaurant. After walking down a couple flights of stairs you will make it and the views are worth every step. We went around sunset time and the water along the coast was glowing. It was breathtaking! We started our night with a round of cocktails and I opted for the lemoncello martini. It was presented nicely and had a great flavor- not too tart. We also got the fried ravioli and ahi tuna, which were both delicious and fresh. My friend got a dirty martini and he claimed it was the BEST dirty he's ever had! He was obsessed. For my meal I got the seafood risotto, which was loaded with fish, crab, mussels and clams. The risotto was more rice that true risotto, but it was delicious - great flavor - super fresh! Now the highlight of the night was our dessert. We all got a round of white russians (recommended), and I kid you not it was the most delicious white russian I've ever had in my life! The cream was whipped and placed on top - perfect for sipping. The flavor was unreal! I talked about it all trip. Hands down you must end your meal with this cocktail!! I will definitely plan to go back on my next trip to the coast. It was simply amazing. Came in by boat, anchored in the water just below the restaurant, and walked up the bluffs to this charming, multi-tiered patio overlooking the ocean. 2 stars for the view and cave bar, and a half star for my daughters meal... my wife, daughter and I went out to this restaurant looking forward to a 4-5 star experience and food, but were left wanting better of both. We arrived and things started off well with a pre-dinner cocktail in the cave bar while we waited for our table. After getting to the table the experience started going downhill fast, with the app (squash blossoms) coming out with heavy breading which overwhelmed the rest of the dish. Then my wife and I order the fresh catch snapper for two. The way this dish was explained it was sure to be exactly what we wanted to finish off our trip to Italy! But, 15 minutes later we saw our beautiful presentation of a fish go racing by almost out of sight to our waiter, she spoon scooped two plates and I guess she assumed we both wanted the lemon butter sauce dumped on top of the small mound of fish she quickly separated on the serving plates. When she came to our table to drop off the 'Special Catch' of the day I thought to myself "I serve my cats better looking meals than this..."! We tried to order another entree since both of our entrees were awful only to find out the kitchen was closed with no warning. Very disappointed. The best experience on the Amalfi! From the initial warm greeting from our waiter piccoloto to all our delicious meals... even down to the dessert! I mean I am really at a loss for words! The seafood pasta was impeccable. Delightful and fresh as ever! As an American, of course I asked for fresh parmigiana and was kindly turned down by our waiter. "I do not recommend for you to use" Duly noted. I appreciated his boldness and passion at the same time! Post lunch... I decided to have the lemon sorbet! Mouth watering, delectable dessert that I will go back for before my leave in praiano! To think that it ended there, we were surprisingly greeted with an amazing band!! They served us a bottle of wine with parts of the cork floating in it. The server said they would bring a new bottle and never did. Prices are high which we don't mind if you get a good meal. Not the case here. Mediocre food and service with an attitude. Don't waste your money. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because it's a unique location on the water.
