It is so refreshing to spend time at a coffee house that is incredibly passionate about its coffee but isn't so engrossed in its beans that it doesn't share its love with anyone else. Every person who walks into First Pour is treated like a true coffee aficionado who may want to learn more about their coffee blend, coffee art, cupping, roasting or are just interested in catching up in a warm, welcoming venue with friends. Not only do staff welcome you but they will tell you about what they are serving you and if you have more questions they take the time to answer them. First Pour has franchises across Australia and supplies over 50 other stores with Veneziano blend coffee in Adelaide. And don't worry, I initially squirmed at the word franchise too, but this place proves you can be bigger than one store but still have a unique, non-mass produced offering to the public. First Pour does barista basic and masterclass courses and a little bird has told us a very secret coffee cupping room under the cafe will be opening up soon too for any members of public to learn more about what coffee cupping is! Oh and even if you have had 5 coffees that day you can always go here for one of their exotic teas from the SA's of the world like South Aus, South America and South Africa. I know anytime I'm in the area First Pour will always be the "first choice" for me.

I was only there for few minutes as I was on my way to meet a friend, but I found the service to be prompt and very friendly, it was easy to have a casual chat with everyone there (including the workmen - although I suspect they're not permanent fixtures). The to chocolate was delicious and was just what I needed on that cold afternoon.

There are new bean blends and origins on the menu each week, it sells quirky macarons (think hot cross buns and ANZAC Day specials) and it rocks the warehouse chique atmosphere to a tee. There is a huge BUT though. While the service is quick, it has no personality or concern for the fact that you are more than a soy latte or a pour over or a piccolatte drinker. I think they can sense my anti-hipster and as a result avoid making eye contact or engaging in a smile and a conversation. There lacks a vibe, a mabo, a feel to this place that comes with a buzzing staff who make an effort to know your name, have a chat with you while waiting for coffee and greet you with a smile. But if you're happy enough to join the line of suits waiting for their cuppa joe and ingrained on who just posted a new pic of their cat on Instagram (guilty) then this is the place for you.

After some busy time spent shopping, and my last snack all but forgotten, I line up again, this time for one of their open grilled focaccias. I decide to try something a little different and go for the pumpkin one, with caramelised onions, rocket, roasted pumpkin, fetta and pine nuts, lightly toasted to further bring out the flavours. YUM. We placed our order without a fuss and paid quite promptly, there weren't any delays waiting for a EFTPOS machine to be available to process the payment and the staff gave us our drinks on the spot so we didn't have to wait which was good because we were hungry and thin helped to tide us over until the food got to us. The food didn't take long to come either, after ordering and taking a seat out food was with us in probably a little over five minutes my roll was fresh and tasty and the open focaccia was served warm after being heated in a toaster oven, both meals were quite good and the quick service for a busy little cafe was a welcome change. Only thing holding me back from giving five stars is that there were several vacant tables with dirty dishes on them that weren't being cleared away, we had to move a coffee cup to another free table to clean ours up, as we were close to finishing up our meal other tables started to be cleared away.

With my love of bagels, I did not have to second-guess what I wanted for brekkie. It is served with herbed cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers, watercress and pickled onions. Woo! However, after ordering it seems I had to get there earlier. They had run out of bagels! But, the staff where kind enough to offer a sourdough as a sub. Great!
