So, Mothers Milk has amazing reviews and for good reason! Just off Unley Road Mother's Milk is buzzing every morning full of customers dosing up on caffeine and getting down on a damn good brekkie. The staff here graciously glide through customers ensuring that everyone's needs are met. This is all done with a smile and passion for their profession. One thing I really love in a business is when you see the staff enjoying themselves. It is kind of infectious! You just want to be around them more and support such a positive environment and business. It is all about starting your day in the right way! Décor is simple and funky with cool wooden rustic looking tables. The menu is also simple, which shows that they are confident in what they deliver. With my love of bagels, I did not have to second-guess what I wanted for brekkie. It is served with herbed cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers, watercress and pickled onions. Woo! However, after ordering it seems I had to get there earlier. They had run out of bagels! But, the staff where kind enough to offer a sourdough as a sub. Great! And also, I should mention that I am not fussed if a restaurant runs out of something. It just means their food is fresh and popular! Ok, so my brekkie was amazing. Lots of flavour in the cream cheese and pickled onions. Bread and salmon was super fresh and the watercress just tied everything off. Perfect! Could not fault it and would be just as amazing in bagel form. The coffee here is ace as well, great flavour and a strong brew! Good pick me up for the rest of my day. A Mother's Milk serves and eclectic range of coffee and a top notch breakfast menu, enough to make anyone happy. I'm a fan of the percolated coffee and the sardines on toast (they don't call it sardines on toast, something like grilled sardines on freshly charred sourdough, drizzled with freshly pressed olive oil, but guys, its sardines on toast) followed up by their delicious banana smoothie. Service here is first rate, my barista/waiter was very friendly and talked me through their coffee beans and where they source their food stuffs after I asked and was very attentive. I've read in a few reviews that people were affronted by the service here but I believe I was blessed by eating here early on a Thursday morning when there weren't too many others in store. I found the coffee to be nice and smooth, but will admit that this occurred because I asked my barista what would suit my tastes and opted out of my regular long black for his suggestion. On trying my staple cup later on in the meal I decided that the roast was not for me and not to my tastes so was very glad I asked for advice. This place nearly lost a star because of the name. 'A Mother's Milk?' I thought. 'A coffee bar?!' I also thought. Breast milk, I thought. I immediately imagined a room out of the back of this place with a hundred women hooked up to breast pumps, feeding the masses what they needed. I don't think it helped that there was a lady breast feeding outside when I thought it. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Apart from my disturbing visual (which I must add may only be exclusive to me until I described it to you), this place is a funky urban coffee shop on Unley street with friendly service and affordable good tasting coffee. The interior is very 'Melbourne'. Very urban. The tables outside are made from old wooden crates with a chalkboard service. There was table service and it was quick and friendly and the coffee was great. For only $3.30 per coffee - it is one of the cheaper coffee places around. They do light meals as well. Ok I have returned and I have changed my tune. After going on a weekday to this place I was pleasantly surprised to get to know the waiters a bit better, spend a bit more time browsing the menu and also enjoy another "to perfection" coffee. We were lucky enough to have to be an appointment quite early on a Sunday allowing us to for once head to A Mothers Milk without driving past and seeing a line up so bailing. I love table service and was pleasantly surprised it was table service, coffee was pleasantly nice could have been warmer but I dealt with it. Quickly glanced at the menu and ordered the baked eggs and the bf ordered the French toast with raspberry compote and white chocolate mascarpone. Service for food was speedy and my baked eggs looked pretty tiny but due to the rich flavour of the sauce it didn't need to be any bigger. My only gripe was the two tiny pieces of bread needed more. Bf's French toast was out of this world and we will go back again just for that. We dined and dashed, it doesn't seem like the place you can sit and chill and take your time. Sweet decor but even when it wasn't busy it seems to have an aura of busy-ness. We were in an out in just over half an hour. Efficient, tasty. read more

Mothers milk is not just another hipster cafe! Many times I've been to cafes that have the same feel and their food always presents well, but once you take a mouthful it is actually quite bland. Not Mother's milk though!! I ordered a pumpkin salad here and upon first look it had no dressing, but it turned out just the pumpkin was lathered in a flavoursome oily dressing that worked so well when you had a mouthful of pumpkin with the plain leafy greens. My partner ordered smashed avocado on toast, which he claimed was very good. What made it exceptional was that instead of just having pine nuts or so on top, it topped with dukka which gave it so much more life. I guess the only negative I have about this place is that the seats are a bit weird (theyre like little step ladders, so it makes it a bit awkward to sit down) but the staff were nice and the place had nice vibes in general. read more

I really struggle with how to review this place. My mother taught me that when facing a dilemma write down a list of "pros" and "cons" to help. Well it doesn't help in this case because they are fairly evenly balanced. Let's start with the coffee. It is roasted by The Coffee Barun. They offer several single origins, and get very snooty if you dare order the wrong origin for the wrong coffee type. A breakfast guest of mine was told rather condescendingly that the origin she chose was not suitable for milk coffee. Several times. Now my friend is a person who knows a thing or two about coffee and she stood her ground, but they were not gracious in their acquiescence. The coffee was well made and the origins that they selected were top shelf ones so the coffee was largely guaranteed to be good. The service was in a nutshell terrible. We waited for ages before they brought menus to the table, then ages to have our order taken, and then it was impossible to attract them for a second cup (which I eventually gave up on). They brought a bottle of water absently mindedly to the table during proceedings but no glasses and we has to wait to get those too. There was a lot of staff, and a lot of colour and movement, but not a lot of actual service. Perhaps they were not having a good day, I will have to go again before settling on my thoughts here. Then there is the food. Superb! What a creative menu, someone has put real thought into this to move beyond the standards and take some chances with interesting food. When it arrived, it could not be faulted, and for this they got three stars and not two. But the seating is not right. Stools with no backs, pulled up to little tables like the ones your parents made you sit at when they had dinner parties, it is obvious that you are not invited to linger. I really don't have a problem with this if it were just coffee and the odd friand - but here is the real disconnect - the food is so good that this is precisely what you would like to do. They need to sort this out. So back to the dilemma, how do you rate a place that has great coffee and excellent food, but lacks in service and amenity? Well you take the average and give it three. When I started working in Unley, I asked my twitter friends where the best coffee was in the area and got a resounding answer of A Mothers Milk. While the name is still growing on me (I always get raised eyebrows when I tell people) I am definitely a fan. The service from the boys is great, in 3 visits they'd remembered how I like my coffee and for me, the coffee is worth being slightly pricey as I know it's always going to be good. I've only been during the week so can't comment on the weekend crowds. The 2 breakfasts I've had have been equally yummy! Serg explained to me that he cooks food that he likes to eat at home. So the avocado smashed on sour dough toast was perfect, and the baked eggs (their specialty) was to die for and my staple. I am taking and sending all my friends to this little spot, but get in early to secure a table and be prepared for the hippest of hip crowds with plenty of iPads in sight. read more

One does not simply go to A Mothers Milk and not have one of the best café experiences ever, the staff were so friendly and my friend and I were seated within 30 seconds of walking in the door. The meal was beautiful, I cant remember the name of what I had but I don't think I have ever eaten that well before, the little extras really make you smile like the picture of the dog that was put on my hot chocolate as well as the old style bottles the water was in. if you read other reviews for A Mothers Milk you will most defiantly read the word 'Hipster' and it is true as true can be, trendy, cool and a fantastic place to be, If you don't want to go by now allow me to just finish by saying you wont regret going...even if its only to look at the attractive staff :P Well done, Ill be back soon read more

Finally! After months of driving past, seeing other people's reviews & even trying to go once when it turned out to be closed, I FINALLY got a chance to visit A Mother's Milk. I met a friend for lunch & we got a table without any problems, despite a steady stream of patrons. Within 2 minutes of sitting down, a staff member came over to get our drink orders - I always appreciate speedy service on weekdays as I'm usually on my lunch break. WIthin 5 minutes our drinks were brought over (an iced coffee & a banana smoothie, YUM) & our food orders taken. I ordered the smoked chicken sandwhich on sourdough & my friend ordered the pulled pork sandwhich with jalapeno mayo. While we waited for our meals to arrive, it gave me a chance to have a look around. The decor has a bit of a rustic/ eclectic feel to it. I'm trying really hard not to say 'hipster' cause I think that word has been a bit over-used in relation to this place & I'm not overly convinced that's quite the case. There is some cool artwork on the walls, a big blackboard detailing the coffee (which I don't drink by the way, so can't comment on) & the counter has some desserts such as friands & tarts on it. The meals were delicious, no complaints whatsoever. Upon going up to pay, another staff member did a fantastic job of explaining the desserts to me & trying to convince to me buy one. I found A Mother's Milk to be everything a good cafe should be - welcoming with delicious food & good, speedy service. I'll be back (perhaps for breakfast!). read more

As everyone has said - coffee is amazing! The Bircher muesli is fresh and light, perfect for a warm day. My friend had the BLT with an egg. it was a twist on the standard BLT. It had rocket, so no soggy lettuce from the hot bacon and egg. Aoli instead of mayo and it looked amazing. She cleaned the plate so must have been good. Hint - always busy. Getting that out of the way, I came here while on Unley Road, and found the place packed on a Monday morning!!! I was lucky enough to find a seat, and was surprised to learn it was table service! Because it was busy, it was difficult to get to the counter to view their sweet selections - maybe a more visible glass display cabinet would be better? Coffee was delicious (BONSOY!), and so was my lemon tart. Staff were friendly too. I don't think table service works in a busy cafe like this though, as they nearly undercharged me, forgetting that I had the tart - how do they keep track of everyone in such a confined space? read more

Cool, groovey spot on unley road displaying all the hipster decor and rusty feels! :) happy with the set up and cool little back and outside seating areas. Services was quite good, friendly enough and helpful. Coffee was lovely and a nice bean variety. Also had a cold drip and was delicious. Food wasn't mind blowing for the price. But was standard taste. The menu I feel needed a few simpler breakfast dishes and there needed to be a bit more variety and choice. All and all happy and can say I've been there now :) :) read more

Great coffee and food here. Sunday morning breakfast and it was a full house. I had the fancy baked beans with chorizo and sour dough. The waiter recommended to add fetta to my baked beans but then they forgot to serve it - although I didn't realise until half way through my meal. When the waiter returned later he asked us how it was and he realised he forgot the fetta. He apologised and we had a laugh. The beans were good, but I was looking forward to that added fetta! Mothers milk used to be one of my favourite cafes in adelaide. But it's changed hands to the same people from Cafe Piatto. If we wanted Cafe Piatto food we would go to Cafe Piatto. or McDonald's. The 3 cheese toasted sandwich tasted like it had 3 plastic cheeses and Masterfood mustard. $17 is a lot of money to pay for a McMuffin. Also the long black was burnt. Another one of my favourites. Lovely staff, music and decor. The coffee is a bit too much on the caramel side for me but they change their roasts often. I just really wish they'd update their menu as I think I've had everything on it now. Food is great but avoid the blueberry bagel which was blandly sweet and pasty with no depth of flavour. This little slice of hipster heaven is a relatively new addition to the Unley Road precinct, and a welcome addition at that. Stopping in for breakfast last Saturday with The Girls, I immediately loved the street art on the walls and the super trendy but casual and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were all phenomenally attractive and supremely cool, but blessedly were lovely and attitude free. In my day-to-day life I generally pride myself on being quick on my feet with making decisions, but when it comes to choosing food from a menu - I get some kind of decision paralysis. This was certainly the case here with a delicious looking breakfast menu - sourdough toast with Adelaide hills goats cheese and fig jam, rustic BLT with roasted tomatoes, smoked salmon, fresh smoothies... You can see why I just couldn't edit my options! That said, my open grilled chicken sourdough sandwich with avocado, honey mustard aioli and rocket was a choice well made, and the meals of my lady companions were consumed with both vigor and zest. Quick tip: if you're heading in on a Saturday AM, your visit probably won't be quick - it was quite slow going between the ordering and the food arriving, but it was also super super busy - a testament to the popularity of this joint, methinks. read more

Shocker of a name, it makes you think of mothers suckling people who walk through the door. Great coffee. The staff are vibrant and knowledgeable and they are quick to recommend and see that everything is up to scratch. The food looked amazing and there were a lot of staff buzzing around, which added to the vibe. I was glad I wasn't wearing a suit, though, I might not have been let in! While the coffee here is good, the service is lacking (despite their efforts to be overly friendly upon you entering the premises). The wait for food is too long and not worth it. Food is average to below average and a little over priced. It always seems to be full (of the kind of people who want to be seen in a trendy place) inside is very noisy. The place just has this vibe about it I don't like. I will give 2 stars for the coffee (make sure that is to go) but if you want to enjoy a meal in an inviting environment, head to Rosey's just down the road ;) read more
