Tomato and Eggs, with an additional potato hash side
Josh A.

Public has a great industrial design, that's part industrial and part modern chic. I was here on Easter Saturday for brunch and it was surprisingly quiet. This helped add to my view that Adelaide was a very quiet and relaxed city, however it also made Public feel like it was all show and no substance... Then my coffee arrived, it was the best coffee I've had in a long while! And I even ordered soy! The macchiato I ordered I have now been craving for two days, it truly was a highlight. The food was also tasty, but took forever to come out! I mean there was maybe 15 people at the venue and my order took approx. 40min after ordering. This really hampered the whole experience. Decor can be great, coffee can be amazing, but you make an already hungry person wait that long for their tomato and eggs with a potato hash side and you loose some serious points. All in all, everything was tasty and well cooked, but the wait time really killed the experience.

Great place for a Friday night drinks, came as a group booking and had nibbles, were assigned the writers corner which is fantastic for a group of 25. Food was fusion n tendency to Japanese flavour, pity the wasabi bit has no 'kick'. Cocktail on offer were good n like both the berry n elderflower. Will come back here for lunch one day as I was told that the burger is amazing

Cool decor, very clean & trendy open space. Friendly and quick take away service although they don't attach a name to the orders and only shout out what the order is eg "skim latte" which can be a little confusing if you have the same order as someone else and you aren't sure who ordered first. Good pit stop on your way to work or for a coffee catch up with a friend. Medium sized booths are available so it could be suitable for a more private business chat too. Coffee was good although my "double shot" espresso seemed a little on the short side and was served in a "small" take-away cup rather than a small espresso specific take-away cup which normally holds the crema perfectly & keeps it warm (less top surface area.) But that's really only important to a big coffee snob!

Triple cooked, chunky cut, with mayo... yum.

What a welcoming, bustling space this bar was on a miserable winter's day. We were lucky enough to grab the last three seats at the end of a communal table. Rule number one: book ahead, especially if you'd like one of the groovy looking booths. Others at our shared table were digging into a rustic looking soup which had already sold out by the time we ordered at about 12.45. Rule number two - be early! We decided to go with a mix of naughty and nice - some triple cooked chips to share and some more healthy salads. The salads were amazing... tasty, zingy, and filling. Unfortunately I got so excited by the look of the pumpkin and lentil salad I neglected to read the rest of the ingredients - there were little bits of pink pig in the bowl I got, which made it no go for this vego. Rule number three - vegos should pay close attention to the ingredient list! (I thought it was a shame they didn't offer a no-pig version of this one, my carnivorous friend raved about how good it tasted) The waiting staff were really good about doing a swap, and I ended up with another Asian inspired salad which included roast peanuts - not something I've ever tried before, but it worked really well. The chips were a work of art (I took a photo!) - seriously chunky with a nice dollop of mayo. The wine list is probably a bit on the pricey side - they'd sold out of the only $8 option, so I went for a nice drop of Wirra Wirra red for $10. I'm not sure what the price per serve was with the food, but three of us were full and happy for $20 each (including wine). Too full, unfortunately, to sample the handmade desserts which looked very promising. I liked the flexibility of the menu and the option of having some smaller plates to share. I got the sense that all of the staff actually really cared about their customers and they were all super attentive and friendly, especially given it was a busy Friday lunchtime. One waiter stopped to chat when he noticed we were eyeballing a burger he'd delivered - we were trying to identify one of the sides - it looked like fried zucchini, it was in fact fried pickles. Whatever it was it looked good! - all the presentation was top notch. The decor is perhaps a little bit on the too-cool-for-school side of things, but it is like the super popular kid who you can't actually hate coz they are so damn nice to everyone! I'm already planning my return visit. 'Nuf said.

The menu is large and interesting enough with not too many "generic" options except the ones you want such as Chocolate Fondu for 2 or 4. I had a Banana, Peanut Butter, Cookies, Vanilla Custard, Creamy concoction in a jar which was topped with icecream very very delish and beautifully presented. My companions had waffles, ice-cream and a yummy chocolate and berry mousse/pudding. All were very pleased with their orders and there was a lot of "would you mind if I had a fork full?" going on. Coffee and desserts came out all together and our table was cleared in an appropriate amount of time after we had finished our plates. Being a group of 6 is probably a little too large for the small outdoor space on the sidewalk with round tables and various chair heights, but we made it work. The only down side to this spot is that the coffee is "good" not "awesome"

Luckily, a table had just left, with a quick clean of the table - we were seated. Decor - Candles! I love candlelit places at night, the chairs were also quite comfy, some places which have the same modern/sleek vibe to it like this place, have uncomfortable plastic or metal chairs, but we were seated in comfortable cushy bliss for your butt! We ordered - I had the Cherry Ripe Waffle and one of their 'house specialities' the St Louis Hot Chocolate' Waffles: I have to admit I was disappointed in the waffle, this is what pushed it down to 3 stars rather than 4. The waffle was warm, but it tasted like it had been reheated, or simply defrosted and stuck in a microwave. It wasn't crunchy or fresh, the texture was chewy and dry. I chose this dish because it mentioned white chocolate and almonds, it was presented on the plate, but the white chocolate tasted like melted white chocolate buttons from the local supermarket, too sugary and it hard almost hardened when I tried to scoop it up to put on my waffle. The 'French Vanilla Ice Cream' tasted distinctively like Bulla Vanilla ice cream. The cherries, and cherry glaze were delicious though. The Hot chocolate: Average more or less, it was a good hot chocolate, but I've had better in most other places, for a house special, again I was hoping for a bit more, but I might be a little harsh here, as my friend said he absolutely loved it. I'd order it again if I came here, and that is usually a good sign. They had free water available for patrons, in the water was such things as citrus; oranges, lemons, lychee, and strawberry, I thought that was a little fancy. It was a nice touch to the place. If I came here again, I'd avoid the waffles completely, as they were sub-par. But the venue is a nice place, with a positive atmosphere. Why no white hot chocolate? This makes me sad.

When that has happened I do try other types of coffee from his available collection, but mostly it's the Mexican Organic I go for. Ross and his team have a very good range and even though it is an expensive item, some things in life just have to be right before I can deal with them. I do not like the effects of instant coffee on my system, I almost always end up with a stomach gripe if I drink instant coffee, and you simply don't want to know about that. So I usually drink plunger coffee, it is one of my special things in life I suppose. As far as The Coffee Bean Shop goes they stock a range of implements to create coffee in - mostly the little Italian stove-top espresso jugs, but I tend not to favour them because they are made from aluminium and I understand that too much aluminium heated and exposed to something you then drink can cause some brain function problems over time - just something I read that has stuck. That's why I plunge, but you know, the occasional aluminium jug espresso coffee is no big deal. They do the grinding for you if you need it done, and they use a range of coffee packets that are a nice plane brown bag, so its a pretty sustainable system. Their selection of products includes some pre-ground coffee beans in little plastic pails with a lid, a variety of fragrant and tasty teas, blends of the tea, and the coffee and tea making equipment I mentioned above plus other stuff and some specialty sweets that you'd have with a beverage, or give as a gift - try a chocolate coated coffee bean - wow!

I am happy to see that this stall got updated as it is often one of the first stall you see when entering the Markets from the carpark escalators. The staff at this stall are always very friendly and happy to have a chat about the different varieties of coffee and what they taste like. You will find some amazing beans from all over the world. In particular my partner and I are quite fond of the Organic Mexican beans. Full flavour while being quite creamy and nutty. If you have a tighter budget, why not try their house blends. They are not too bad, the espresso blend is probably the best they offer in that range. If you need ground beans, they will grind them to the style that suits your brew equipment. We prefer to grind them at home to ensure that the coffee is fresh. If you are searching for a gift for a coffee lover, look no further! Purchase them an Aeropress which are sold here. They are a single cup air pressure plunger. They make the perfect brew away from home. My partner loves his and uses it at work every day!
