The Pantry is secluded in suburbia parallel to the train tracks, in an old set of shops and has a strong 50s/60s retro vibe. With only a small array of tables inside and out, getting a table can be a bit of a stretch but taking the time to wait is rewarded once you get your hands on the menu. With full table service, staff are delightfully attentive and will make recommendations left, right and centre. They have a decent range of breakfast and light lunch options and for a non-egg eater, I am quite well catered for unlike other breakfast joints. On my latest visit I decided to have the salmon and horseradish cream bagel and all was delicious except for the rock hard bagel which needed to be sawed through in order to be cut up. Although not a plus to have such hard bread, it did add texture to the dish, which I suppose is a plus. I can't recommend this place for lunch more though, their menu is so varied and offers tasty tasty food. Everyone must eat their spiced chickpea burger. Absolute perfection. Prices are very reasonable and cheaper than quite a lot of other hipster hangouts, and I hope the owners don't clue in on this. The coffee was quite nice and the juice list is droolable but my short black was a touch too tart for my taste. I really enjoy my time here and am looking forward to tasting the rest of the menu.

The folk at The Pantry are the real meety (not meaty) greety friendly kind. They sing and dance around to all sorts of beats - disco was on the menu during my visit. They serve delish De Groot coffee, but it's never really been hot enough when I've visited. I've been able to drink it in about three gulps, which is less than satisfying on a wintry morning. My dining partner's poached eggs were perf but more toast was needed to soak up their sweet, yolky goodness. Other people around us had two full pieces of toast rather than the two little sticks that she got... Disappointing. On the plus side: they can substitute toast in any meal with Enzo's gluten free bread for just 50c! They also do all day breakfast. Also also, the selection of baked goods looked gorg - meringue and honeycomb pastries, muffins, brownies, lemon pistachio cake... My sweet tooth was so, so tempted. Maybe next time?!

Wow - unanimously five stars, doing well Pantry folk. What a great suburban caf. The ladies are right, a whole bunch of heart and soul with A+ for food, drink and coffee quality as well as service from real people with energy and personality. Apparently when they first opened the coffee was not up to scratch and some locals kindly requested they look into it. Like troopers, they did and now you have it! Some of the very best coffee around. I selected a Bloody Mary today and it was made with fresh tomato juice!! So different to the standard but definately a worthy adjustment. I loved it! None of that fake sweetness of the bottled kind, deliciously lemony with just the right amount of spice and a huge stick of cucumber. I almost felt saintly for putting it into my body.... could be dangerous.

Love, love, love the Pantry on Egmont! Their coffee is great and their food has so much flavour!! When I came here yesterday I ordered the hawthorn salad with haloumi added and it was probably one of the best salads I've ever eaten. It had plenty of greens mixed in with chick peas, red onion and carrot with a few slices of haloumi. The dressing was very flavoursome and the smear of the nut butter on the side complimented the haloumi well. My partner ordered the pumpkin and haloumi on south read and was equally impressed. The flavour combination was great and what really stood out to him was the spices used. The staff are very friendly but relaxed, making you feel at home in the cafe. The cafe is a bit small but the interior is very cosy. I love this place and will visiting here much more in the future!

It was a long time since I had last had a meal here but it was just as good as I recalled. The spring tart was flavoursome and perfectly balanced by the artichoke puree. The puree was delicious with a tang. My guests enjoyed their bruschetta on olive bread with ultra fresh ingredients and the tastiest pesto ever. My short black was perfect in terms of flavour, texture and heat. It was served in a hot cup which I think is essential. Looking forward to returning soon to try the breakfast menu again.

Update, perfection every time, any day of the week. Perfection! Normally late the Sunday breakfast/brunch period is a struggle at popular spots such as this. However, despite the place being busy there was plenty of seats (comfortable retro chairs not stools or benches) and the service was amazingly quick. They had plenty of staff and the chef who works in full view behind the counter is quick and got a complicated order correct. The waitress was totally switched on. Great coffee and fresh juice and a great menu. You name it, they have it and it was all perfect. From the house made baked beans to the fruit salad and wood oven toast, everything was great. They also had great brunch and breakfast specials like Italian eggs etc. It's a quiet tree lined street so sitting by the window or outside is lovely.

Well this will be an easy short 'n' shiny review. Top notch, bonza, great!!! Seriously, I thought long and hard and came up with a couple of negatives. One and unavoidable, The Pantry is quite small and when crowded, like on our visit, it feels a little 'full'. And two and avoidable, whilst I like to see cakes out on display/on counters close to where customers hang around, having them right next to the cash register where people cough and touch is not appetising. I did (politely) bring this to their attention. This however was not enough to drag them down to 4 stars. Basically they seem to be doing everything right. The coffee was not particularly robust but had a great flavour and mouth feel. I could have had 3. The milkshake (comes in kids and adult sizes) was a hit as was the raspberry rosewater gelato lemonade (house specialty). And the poached egg breakfasts were cooked to perfection, every bite delicious. Decor is nice, a little old and a little new, interesting prints on walls, not overdone but clean and simple and kind of homely. Most importantly, the service was spot on - efficient, easy, helpful with a smile, and that went for all staff. Prices were reasonable too. In summary, they serve great food in a beautiful setting with a smile. You can't go wrong.
I do find it rather interesting how a friend of mine is trying to convince me that Adelaide has better coffee than Melbourne, particularly since he doesn't drink coffee, and hasn't been to Melbourne for a very, very long time. However, when you discover places like this you have to admit that there are definitely some aspects to life that reminds me of Melbourne. Yeah, this place is actually pretty cool, and they definitely make some really nice coffee as well. Honestly, I'm quite glad that I accidentally discovered this place. read more
I am definitely on a quest for finding Adelaide's best brew! My search lead me to this lovely neighbourhood café. Pantry on Egmont is everything that I want in a café. It is charming, friendly, simple, homely and has that vintage vibe to it. This is the type of café I imagine would have been around more in the 50s-60s around Adelaide. I think they died off a lot a long time ago, but there is a revolution of using old corner store space in Adelaide. I love it so much! The coffee here is definitely one of the best in Adelaide. So easy to drink, the flavour is full and nutty. No bitterness. Beautiful latte art and cups! And don't we all know that coffee is best matched with cake? Oh yes we do! I ordered the Orange Almond GF cake. It had some apricots on top of the cake that had been cooked down. Almost like a jam? So yummy! The cake was moist and not too sweet. I just wanted more! My best advice if you are going to visit this café, is to get there early! It is popular and busy. But for good reason. The brekkie menu looks awesome, I was in immediate regret in eating food at home first! Why, oh why!? I will return to sample the menu. read more
The Pantry on Egmont is one of those cool little hidden cafes tucked away in the trendy suburbs of Hawthorne. The streets are lined with gorgeous jacaranda trees currently in full bloom - it was gorgeous! This place attracts a cool cat crowd of young, hipster type and their respective four-legged friend is also welcome to sit outside. In my last visit, we secured a table outside and manage to skip the busy rush as we observed the steady stream of patrons either stop in for brunch or order coffee on the go. Service was attentive, friendly and prompt. They even noticed when we finished our coffee and offered us another - sure why not? I like the flexibility with the brunch menu, you get your egg and bread base but choose whatever sides take your fancy. I had my eggs scrambled with a side of haloumi and bacon. Just a few of my favourite food on a plate. Nothing beats walking away with a happy belly. read more
I've always loved this little bank of shops and it's great to see it finally thriving like this. The Pantry on Egmont is an absolutely gorgeous cafe, I love the retro decor, the art on the walls and the food is super yummy! They do all day breakfast -always a big plus- and have a great selection of sweet and savoury dishes. Lovely fresh juices - great for relaxing on a hot day. The staff are very friendly too and take good care of their customers. The only draw back I can see for the Pantry is that it is quite small venue and each time I've been there has been pretty crowded which can make it quite noisy too. If you're the sort of person who doesn't do well in crowded places then I would suggest taking one of the outside tables. read more

Delicious coffee! This place is one of my local joints where I know I can always get a fantastic coffee on those mornings where caffeine is not just needed...it is NECESSARY! The food is great here too. My partner does think the serving sizes are a little too big - but hey - that's good value for your dollar then. In saying that, prices are fairly reasonable across the menu. Last time I was there I had the breakfast leek omelette and it was very tasty, only thing was that they had a tonne of rocket on the top which I really didn't like. Overall this place is charming - retro feel with mismatched tables and all the artwork that is displayed is available to buy. It is a bit small so on busy days sometimes you have to wait for a table, but they provide seating out the front while you wait. P.S. Both the meat and the vego burger are delicious! read more

Who knew this little beauty was tucked away, behind a main road and train line in the suburbs of little old Adelaide? Well... I did! And so should you! This gem does Adelaide proud, serving the finest food (all day breakfast for those late to the table) and the freshest combinations of juices. Also, honorable mention to the bright personalities of the waiting staff and quite frankly, the alternative interior. The Egmont experience started by being greeted and seated by a beaming and interesting individual who offered me menus and table water without skipping a beat (table water is lightly flavoured with tropical fruits). Asking if I want something while waiting for my friend is a big plus in my books as I am terribly impatient at times. Pushing forward, I ordered the Duck and Blood Orange salad whilst my dining partner ordered a gourmet lentil salad, both opting for a concoction of juices to sip on while we waited. The juice mixtures were obscure, fresh, tantalising and perfection. Each meal was picturesque in its own right. The Duck was cooked perfectly, leaving the meat moist and tender, whilst the salad was fresh, lively and delicious! The lentil salad that I candidly tasted off of my friends crockery was nothing short of fantastic (and coming from a lover of meats, this is a compliment!). Waiting staff were constantly filling our water glasses continuously without question as we seemed to be drinking like camels. Finishing up on our meals we were offered coffee, and being both coffee connoisseurs we were impressed with the presentation, flavours and consistency (which many people forget about when making coffee). All in all, I like to pride myself on knowing the best places to eat and drink around Adelaide and this is one of them. read more

After a trek across Southern Adelaide to find something delicious and quirky, my friend and I ended up at The Pantry. From the moment we walked up the footpath we were welcomed by the awesome staff who were friendly and eager to help. We were lucky to find the cafe almost empty on our visit, but I've heard it's generally pretty packed. I can understand why - table service at a cafe blew us away! Coffees were great - could have been a touch hotter, but that's really my only complaint of the whole experience. The kitchen was closed by the time we arrived, but I was still able to order from the cake selection. Do yourself a favour and make sure you try the apricot and almond cake, which is potentially the best piece of cake I've ever eaten. You won't regret it! The winning moment was when the barista approached us to tell us she was about to turn off the machine, and enquired whether we'd like another coffee. I'm sure she was keen to go home at the end of a long day, but the offer was very appreciated. It also served as a nice gentle reminder that they were shutting soon, rather than the "turn off all the music and complain loudly behind the counter" technique that I've witnessed elsewhere. The Pantry on Egmont is seriously good. Seriously, seriously good. So good that I'm investigating real estate in Hawthorn to make sure this can become a more regular occurrence... read more
Breakfast being the most important meal of the day, seems to be one that lots of places either overcomplicate or simply mess up. Think tiny servings, cold eggs..... The Pantry seems to get it spot on every time. The servings are large but not outrageous and full of good quality delicious produce. Russel's big breakfast is the fail safe option but if you are looking for something different try the breakfast tacos! I will note that you simply can't leave without a cake.. if you are too full ask for a cake takeaway because they are too good to leave without! Its very busy on weekends but somehow the staff always manage to find you a table, and they have blankets out the front if you need to wait on a chilly winter morning! This is probably my favourite breakfast place in Adelaide! read more

Edit: this is a vastly superior cafe. Second time round - the coffee is still amazing, the food is still stupidly good (like 'why isn't every meal I eat, this meal' good) the service is always awesome. Even the music is on point. I think they've renovated or had a reshuffle as this time round there was more room for general chilling. It's definitely worth the drive oh my god it's worth it read more

No matter how busy the staff always do their best to get you a table or at least a coffee while you wait. I have always been greeted with a smile, no matter how busy and hectic. When you do get a table, you get menus and water straight up! WOW! Coffee and meals come out fast, but at no point have I ever felt rushed. Breakfast is so delicious, the burgers look incredible too. Even though there may be a small wait sometimes, don't be deterred it is worth it!! read more

I love this place. And I love its location. Its such a fun, quirky, cosy atmosphere. I like that its small and intimate. Its awful trying to get in and out when you have to shimmy your curvaceous self between closely packed lovely people, but, then you only go in or go out when you need to... right...? So its worth it. Or, you pounce a quick escape when people move up to the counter to place their order. The collection of op-shop-or-grandma's-home inspired tables and chairs are just perfect for adding colour and variety. The bar seats at the window not only offer you a view of the world, but you can spy on those sitting outside and discuss what they are eating or what you think they are talking about. Favourite! The fun atmosphere comes with the mix of people chattering, the kitchen cooking, the staff taking orders... its wonderful. Chaos in beauty. And wonderful. If you haven't been, you should definitely get yourself there. And early. Or if not early, then you can wait for when a space opens up. Its totally worth it! read more

Delicious, fresh, well prepared food matched with friendly and efficient service gives The Pantry 5 stars from me! I love going to The Pantry. The decor and aromas create an atmosphere that is the perfect cafe vibe. Although a small, I've never had to wait too long for a table. The pantry caters to everyone with an extensive brekky menu, yummy burgers and shoestring fries, soup, delicious flavoursome salads and more. The Hawthorn Salad with Haloumi! Portions are generous and the menu is thoughtfully constructed. So good! Also great coffee, and a range of smoothies and juices. With so many boutique quirky cafés popping up around adelaide the staff at The Pantry are polite and attentive, ensuring you're looked after and never kept waiting. For the unley area this is the cafe to go to! You are probably looking at a group of 6 max if you'd like to go with friends. Walkers with dogs are also welcome out the front and frequent the cafe. read more

Charming venue for breakfast with very friendly service. Everything was fresh and tasty without being over the top. Gets a bit jammed and crowded inside at times but that speaks for the popularity of the place. A few more breakfast menu choices would make it unbeatable. read more
The food was really good and the service was friendly, which is impressive considering the pressure they seemed to be under. It's not that they were understaffed so much as there's no way to employ any more staff because there physically isn't any more space in which to put them. As it is, the tables and chairs are so close together that I'm not really sure how the wait staff manage to get orders to tables without resorting to tossing dishes like frisbees. So it's a bit crowded in here. Also, at peak times there will be a lineup. I thought the food was a little more expensive than I would have expected. Something that might cost $14 elsewhere will cost $18 here. But again, it was really good. I had a sandwich from the specials menu and the rest of our group all had various kinds of breakfast and everyone thought their food was delicious. read more
Firstly the coffee lived up to the high expectations all the yelp reviews instilled. Absolutely delicious, we were lucky to get one of the two outdoor tables and were treated to a serve of the veggie burger and banana bread. The burger was pretty different and was nice and firm even though veggie patties usually end up a sloppy mess so great taste and texture for that! The banana bread came in a large serve too and was super filling. Its a bit hard to find but worth the hunt! read more

The Pantry is not something you would randomly drive past and decide to try. It is quite hidden away, but it is not far from the city and definitely worth a try. For me to say that is was amazing, means that it must have been absolutely brilliant. My first time here I arrived ridiculously hungover, at 8am after 2 hours sleep. So you can imagine I wasn't the happiest or hungriest person alive. However, the staff were extremely nice, chatting away to me and making me laugh. The coffee was brilliant, I downed two in approximately 5 minutes. Both these factors lessoning my hangover and increasing my mood. I chose the cooked vegetarian breakfast. The best cooked breakfast I have ever eaten. It wasn't just a normal cooked breakfast, which made it better. The baked beans were home made and have a slightly smoky flavour. Instead of a hashbrown there was a strange potato pikelet thing, that tasted heavenly. There wasn't too much bread either, but it wasn't a bad thing as there was extra of the other ingredients, like avocado. I have an obsession with avocado so if someone decides to fill the majority of my plate with it I will fall in love with them, hence the perfect completion to the perfect cooked breakfast. Another cute touch to the café is the decorating. It is very retro. Vintage seats, tables, sugar containers and other decorations. This may just feed my hipster-ness but I absolutely loved it! There was also some beautiful art pieces on the wall. read more

A friend's recent Facebook post on cafes received an incredible amount of comments. It seems she opened a can of worms by posing the question "aren't there any Adelaide cafes with soul anymore?" Dozens of responses flooded in. Some I agreed with, many I'd never heard of. One post caught my attention. The next morning my curiosity got the better of me and I made my way to The Pantry in Lower Mitcham. Driving along a suburban street along the railway line, I wasn't sure I was in the right area or that I going to stop. If only I could find the blessed place. The many cars out the front suggested I was in the right space. This. was. it. A cafe with SOUL! It's a small shop front with a handful of tables lovely collected from the homes of sweet, little nannas from the 60s and large paintings form local artists adorn the walls. The service is what impressed me the most. These days in the fast-pace, high-turnover environments, very few cafe staff walk out from behind the counter to greet customers. I was warmly welcomed and offered a table and within minutes, I fell in love with the place. Many around me were enjoying delicious looking brunch items and it was comforting watching the chef just in view behind the counter, flipping bacon and poaching eggs. My simple coffee order was made quickly and happily and the staff were happy to chat about what they offered. Later in the week I was back. I was greeted with "a soy latte for our new customer of whom we do not know her name?" I swooned. They'd remembered. For soy drinkers, they use Bonsoy (the best and most expensive). They've been there for about a year and given it's success, are looking at expanding into the neighbouring shop. I am yet to book, but they do monthly degustation dinners on Saturday nights and the menus look incredible! I'm hoping to go early 2012 and will post again after that. There are some really great photos on the website and information about the dinners. read more

Located adjacent to the Belair train line in leafy suburban Hawthorn, sits this quaint little café big on flavor, service and style. The blue and white tiles on the front facade tells me it was once a local butcher shop which has been reincarnated into a café reminiscent of the 1950's reflected clearly in its decor and styling. Upon entering I was transported into my grandparents' dining room with its eclectic retro mix of tables and vinyl chairs, plastic kitchen canisters, teapots, retro books and magazines lining the lower shelves under the front counter, right down to the old brown four legged telly taking pride of place in the centre. And short of seeing the staff wearing frilly aprons and beehive hairdo's, although I don't think the all male staff there on the day would go that far for authenticity, it'd be the real deal. Beaming myself back into the here and now, I notice there is a huge life like painting hanging on the wall of a really handsome guy sitting on a sunlit beach, his gaze a million miles away...much like mine at the moment. Anyway, moving right along as the waiter is waiting for my order, I decided on the Bespoke Breakfast ($9.90) with the Tasmanian Salmon extra ($4.50) at 1.00pm (who says you can't eat breakfast in the afternoon??) and it was...mmm yumm. (Yes breakfast, who would've guessed!). And to wash it all down with was 'THE BEST LATTE' I've tasted in my life! True! It has obviously been produced by the awesome looking coffee machine sitting on the front counter and I reckon the barista had something to do with it too. I bet their tea packs a punch also, judging by the array of tins adorning the shelves like tin soldiers, the choice is yours. Oh and they also have takeaway, how's that for service! The menu is varied and the prices are modest, the food is fresh, wholesome and generous and presented mouth watering tasty. The staff are friendly which made me feel comfortable and welcome. After experiencing this café on a gorgeous sunny Spring afternoon in the middle of the week, I'm convinced every neighborhood should have a Pantry, it's sure to brighten your day all year round. What can I say...except in the words of Liz Lemon from 30 Rock "I want to go to there"...again! read more
Based on the previous review, we decided to try out this place for breakfast. Nice little shop, very busy, but we didn't have to wait for too long. Staff were very friendly. Very good first impression. They don't have a huge menu, but everything sounded so good. We had one from the special and a smashed avocado. Service was pretty fast and the food looked amazing and the taste was just as good as it looks, or even better. I really enjoyed it. However, the reason for a 3 star is: they had one piece of toast cut into half. I had mashed avocado, two eggs, a few slices of haloumi to eat with my toast. I am never a bread fan, it was the very first time I actually required extra slice. And it was the very first time, I got charged 4 dollars for a slice of bread. I could get a loaf of sourdough at farmers market near by. Honestly, there was enough bread in both of our dishes to begin with. Overall, I did enjoy my breakfast, a bit off putting when received the bill. I might return sometime, but won't get extra slice of bread next time. read more

This would have to be my favourite cafe in Adelaide. Tucked away in the burbs, next to a train line, the atmosphere is fantastic! And the food and coffee are ALWAYS amazing. Had a fantastic brunch, the cafe was bursting with people so we waited on the foot path with a blanket and a coffee until a table was ready but this was all part of charm. I really recommend a visit here. I walked 2.9KMs to get to here.. and it was definitely worth it! it's a small coffee shop with a touch of trendy without being Uber Hipster (I cant stand hipster), the service is very good, warm and friendly. I doNt drink coffee so check another review for caffeine fix quality... however, iM a tea drinker and the english breakfast pot was loose leaf = GOOD , (pot for 2 could be bigger though) out of habit, I ordered the Big Breakfast, and this breakfast is the best iVe cHowed down on in ages! top quality! poached eggs, bacon, sausage done perfect! side of beans is an added bonus. The best of all!!.... the bread! Im sick of places trying to be so groovy, so healthy, so hipster that all they serve is SOURDOUGH. Sourdough is crap to eat with eggs and bacon, it's hard edges make cutting with a butter knife a chore, and it's too crunchy when toasted-yuk!! piss off sourdough!! this place has it's Bread game on lock! it's not plain bread and I doNt think it's sourdough, it was brilliant! 5stars! iL be eating Here FOR SURE! read more

Don't try their smoothie, it's worthless. I've ordered a mango smoothie and it just tasted like milk with a little bit of yoghurt mixed up. Fresh juices were fine their foods were good. One of their today's special, pumpkin sauce glazed chicken with salads were so nice. read more

A light lunch was in order and this place did not disappoint. Their menu was varied and a great looking specials board. I decided to go with French Toast with blueberries with bacon on the side. I realise this does not do it justice as there was so many extra treats in store with cream and dips. The staff were really friendly, lots of art on the wall and just one of those comfortable cafes you could just stay there all day.. look forward to returning.. read more

Beautiful little slice of quality, service, rustic food! Went for brekkie, and some in our group were gluten free... No issues!! To quote one of the GF people in our group: "best breakfast I've ever had!" (Mushroom Raghu with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce). Definitely returning! read more
