Coffee is one of many panda weaknesses. How convenient that some of my friends are right in the middle of taking that dreaded bar exam in the particular state they chose. It was my own bar exam experience from earlier this year that turned me into a caffeinated panda in the first place. I walked in around 11:30 on a Monday, and I probably saw two or three customers the entire time. Not gonna complain, since that means room to sit and faster service at the counter. IKE Box now offers several selections of Sisters Coffee, and being a big fan of dark roasts, I got a 12 oz. cup of the Black Butte Gold ($1.50). Just as advertised, it had a pleasing, rich, full-bodied feel. Excellently prepared. But wait! They had these s'mores treats in rice krispies form -- but using what I believe was Golden Grahams cereal instead (or a generic brand, not sure). Mini chocolate chips are scattered throughout this one, while partially melted marshmallows (some melted all the way, others still intact) held everything together. Although it would have been better fresh (it had been sitting in the display case for some time, I'd guess), it cured my sweet tooth just fine. And there's nothing wrong with intact room temperature chocolate chips. Unless you want to see a messy panda. A cheerful, positive person ran the register. Always nice to see that. My rating stays the same for now. read more

This place gets 5 stars for interior decor and ambiance. Quite roomy. A great mixture of chairs/tables and couches. The coffee bar looks good, as does their food selection (the typical things you'd find in a coffeehouse display case: scones, cookies, muffins, etc.) Why only 4 stars? One, there is a 75 cent coffee refill. I could possibly get on board with this, but not when the coffee has been sitting out for so long and is almost at room temperature. However, these things happen, and a customer must be understanding of reality and physics, but the business should also take care to ensure they are serving hot and fresh coffee. They either need controls or procedures instituted. The other downer to the refill price is that there was then a line of several people. I do not want to have to queue up again just to deliver my 75 cents. They need a more convenient way of collecting this charge. Forgive my complaining, but one other thing that seems to be out of place here: the coffee service itself is awkwardly scattered: you dispense your coffee at one table, then you need to go to another stand for both creme and sugar, but its where everyone is throwing out their trash. Its nasty to see everyone's trash passing by while you're trying to prepare your coffee. This really is an unacceptable setup for such a great place with tons of room. Owner or manager: it may have been like this for a long time, but it sucks. Please seek to change it. Its very awkward. Its worse than awkward. You can do much better with a little thought. Looking around, all the patrons seem happy and satisfied. (Yes, they were able to somehow summon the inner strength to overcome the awkward coffee service. LOL God, I'm a complainer! Sorry everybody. I just like to see every business realize its full potential. Yes, I care too much! Is that a crime??? LOL) I will be back. (Not that they really want me. I've been taking up a table for well over an hour waiting for my GF to finish an activity inside one of the rooms here. Sorry, Ike's. I will be a better customer next time.) Forgot to mention all the staff seem great. It feels like the morale is high, and that's always a good sign things will go well for you as a customer. read more

Located in what seems to be an old reclaimed house, the IKE Box has been around for a long time, and for good reason. Well, good reasons: - The staff is very friendly, and is always willing to help when you don't know what to order. They're more like bartenders than baristas, meaning they know a lot about the coffee they're making, and are willing to work off the script and make something that sounds good. It usually is. - Their coffee is great. However, I have a pretty low bar when is comes to the taste of coffee. It's similar to Starbucks, which is a definite compliment. - The food is pretty good. I recommend trying either one of their quiches for breakfast or a burrito for lunch. Both are light yet filling. - The space. If you're looking for a place to plop down and do some work, skip the small crowded Starbucks. This place has two conference rooms that you can reserve, and multiple side rooms with couches where you can work in peace. Besides that, the space is HUGE. You'll have no problem finding a comfy place to sit for awhile and do your thing. All in all, I love this place, and am glad that it's become a Salem institution. read more

Salem's coffee is good, but not great. At the time of me writing this there is one other joint with a better promise of coffee (Clockworks) but their training leaves much to be desired and sadly the shop does not live up to the much appreciated and glorified name of Stumptown. So, the Ike Box is it. This place serves Alann Brothers Coffee, which though good is very common in the Mid-Valley and therein it finds mediocrity. However the Ike box rises above the other shops in the area with its good training and with it's fantastic locally made organic ingredients. The Ike Box also has tried hard to maintain an old-style look, maintaining older furniture to fit with the age and history of the building as well as the painting, look, and feel of the place. Walking into the Ike Box would be the same 50 years ago as it is today. Add all this to the fact that the Ike Box is ran by a non-profit organization supporting local low-SES high schoolers, and I think we come to a great Cafe in downtown Salem. read more

The coffee is watery, expensive, and frankly, tastes like shit. Inconsistent service (often awful, sometimes good) and long wait times. I know they do good in the community, but who cares? I came for a good, quick cup of coffee; I didn't come to feel warm and fuzzy inside. read more

I've worked here, volunteered with them and been involved with their program Ike Quest. Great staff, fantastic management, wonderful and beautiful space, good food and excellent coffee, with an amazing cause. Coffee for a cause is my favorite kind. Having seen first hand through my own life the positive impact they have on youth, I love going here. I know from working here that Ike Box works hard to put customers first and meet their needs. I got the Yelp deal ($5 for $10) and had no problem redeeming it. Ordered a piece of Greek quiche with sourdough toast, and a specialty drink. My companion ordered a blended java chip and a piece of coffee cake. The barista was cheerful and friendly in taking our order and bringing it to our table. The quiche was warm and cheesy, with a pleasantly soft crust. I gather they get it from Allann Brothers. My drink was the "cinnamon bun", a white mocha with cinnamon and caramel. It really smells like a cinnamon bun! was very delicious, but a tad too sweet. My previous experiences have been similar- really good coffee drinks, extra sweetness. Ike Box is a great coffee spot. I've been in a couple of times and really enjoy the laid back kind of feel. A perfect place for an afternoon with a laptop or a good book. Probably not the best place for a business get together, but a great spot for groups to meet at. They have a lot of space and you wont feel crunched with a group of 12. The coffee is the serious highlight of Ike Box. They put on all ages shows sometimes too. They used to be the only all ages place in town aside from house parties but now there are a handful, which is great since I truly mean sometimes. If you come for a rollicking night life I would point you elsewhere. If you do happen to stop in on a night with live music, you are in for a family friendly show. Nothing hardcore, or harsh, and (sadly) no hip hop or rap (we still need a good venue for this in town). They get seriously packed like a preteen's dream night out, which can make you feel your age if your age is above 18. I can only speak for the nights I've gone, but a better bet might be any night they Don't have live music. All in all, I come for the coffee but stay for the couches. read more

Their fridge machine thing blows out hot air which made waiting in line kind of uncomfortable, but the wait wasn't too long. They have a few tables outside which was nice to enjoy our coffee. I've been coming to the Ike Box for business and pleasure for some time but have only bought hard boiled eggs as they didn't carry unsweetened milk alternative or heavy whipping cream for my no sugar lifestyle. Now they do! I got coffee with heavy whipping cream. They brew 3 different coffee varieties, all made from Sisters Roasters, a local to Oregon coffee roaster. They're all fairly good. On their menu they've added a low carb breakfast option. I'm delighted by this! This consists of an egg patty with or without bacon, cheddar cheese, and a sausage patty. Tastes amazing and reasonably priced as well. They have breakfast sandwiches for those who eat bread and a selection of baked goods such as scones, bagels, and bread pockets with meat inside. The staff is friendly and service always excellent. Lots of seating however always busy so you may have to wait for a table. Parking is precarious as they're located downtown and you'll have to pay to park. Meter maids are hot n heavy so don't risk it unless you can afford the ticket. Besides all this, the Ike Box supports a youth program for local youth providing job education and positive resources. This place is an all around good business for Salem and I highly recommend a visit :) read more

Learned that the apple cider is actualy made with real Apple cider juice and the options; spiced is with cinnamon and caramel is with a shot of caramel. One of my favorite study spots. They have wonderful chai (they sell My Chai and another type of chai that is also good). Their other teas are good too! The food is pretty basic, but it's good on-the-go food and you get better variety than some of the other local coffee shops. They have nice sized tables, lots of available tables, and lots of good nooks and crannies that you can pick a seat. There is almost always a table with an outlet accessible if you have your computer with you. It's a great place to go by yourself or if you are in a group. read more

BIG MISTAKE to chose this venue to reconnect with family after many months apart! They drove up from the south valley to be here, and I was embarrassed I had suggested Ike Box to meet and have lunch!! The "hot" food was barely warm, the toast was burnt, dry, and the heel of the loaf! I am feeding it to the birds. The other couple chose panini, and the server didn't bring out the chips, didn't seem to know panini came with chips, had to go back inside to get them. Our guests said the panini didn't taste good, either. Presentation was awful, (to-go boxes, sandwich bags, no tray, no panache, kind of tossed on the table---awful!) the server had no personality, no social graces, couldn't wait to dump off the food and race back inside. Food staff need to bathe and dramatically improve grooming. Not sure they should be preparing something people eat. Ugh!!! The total for our meals was $38.50, and might have been worth $5-6 total (mostly for drinks). With restaurants crying for customers, this place really needs to up their game! I say, don't waste your time. Find a place that has good food, treats you well, staff that is clean, well presented, and knows what they're doing! This place does not!!! I have to be frank- I am not a huge fan of the chai tea at the Ike box. The main reason being that it is way too sweet. Other than that, I love their collection of pastries and bagels. The area is spacious and has several conference-style rooms in the back area. I am not sure if this place has AC during the summer. The couple of times that I went, only a couple of fans were on. That being said, I wouldn't recommend this place during those 100 degree dog days. But since it's Salem, this is not a problem for most of the year. read more
