Not only did she change my booking and charge my card in full (including tip) for the wrong service hours before my appointment at the salon, she was also incredibly uncommunicative. I had to go out of town last minute and made multiple attempts to reach her--I called, DMed, and messaged her on StyleSeat to do my due diligence and reschedule or cancel. I was ignored on all platforms until hours later, when she finally responded with, "You have to cancel on StyleSeat, and I have to charge you a cancellation fee." Mind you, I couldn't cancel on StyleSeat because she had already charged my card in advance for a service I didn't book. I had to make my way after many years not coming here because I moved upstate, it was a must that I get my hair done with Darlene for my 40th bday, I love that I even share the same birthday as her APRIL 17TH. This was such an Amazing salon, i love the location and this place feels very cosy... They are very busy and im sure very well known in the neighborhood, so she must be doing something right...I was more than happy with my end result my hair was curled, shiny and trimmed. This is the former salon of the famed Ursula Stephens...hairdresser to the stars. The owner of this salon is very sweet and talented as well. There is a small make up bar where you can have your eyelashes and make up done. The wait can be a bit long, but you come out looking like a video vixen! The do basically every type of hair style you want, but they are not inexpensive. Hey, you get what you pay for!! I was hoping this would be a salon I could go to because I will say this, the location is not too far and she is actually good at doing hair. I got a silk press and it came out pretty good. I will never downgrade someone's talent especially if they are good (That's the +2 stars). Entering her establishment, its beautiful and organized. Her greeting not really, she looks at you like "what do you want" or "what are doing here"? (That's the -1 star). She did it another person that walked in later and then realized it was a client from the past that returned and her attitude abruptly changed. Now granted I have been rescheduling appointments because of work and the most recent was a virtual event for a passing of a friend's family that was being rescheduled (I have rescheduled 2 times). However, I am a woman that respects people's times and business therefore I have rescheduled those appointments IN ADVANCE! Never have I rescheduled within 24-48 hours. In fact, I rescheduled 4-6 days prior, yes I have proof. She did not have the respect or professionalism to send me the email IN ADVANCE which she sent at 3:09 PM for 10:00 AM appt the next day. Her "so-called" reasoning was that I disabled auto payments (which is not true as I have multiple emails from Styleseats after I scheduled my stating "You will pay and tip through your phone" and "Your card on file will be charged automatically after the appointment" and yes they were attached to her appointments. Also, she is not the only person I schedule appointments with on Styleseat and I always get charged after the appointment electronically. And this reasoning should be null and void as she took a cash payment from me of $40.00 after she clipped my ends. Her other reasoning was my booking history (which was only 2 times) therefore she "blocked" me from scheduling with her establishment in the future. I guess that made her feel high and mighty. (This is the -2 star). AND YES I HAVE EXPERIENCED BETTER! After speaking with two friends that actually have businesses and they both agree that she probably had a friend who wanted that appointment time so she voided my appointment and turned it on me as to why she could not accommodate. They have actually heard of other businesses doing this which is pathetic and immature. And I would not after experiencing just the receptionist or whoever answered the call. I called asking about a deva cut and only b/c a review on yelp mentioned getting one here. The person who answered didn't know what a deva cut was so I clarified that I did not want heat used and its a technique (Idk why I even kept talking after this point). She explained that they blow the hair out and cut it for naturals and that's the cut. OK fine. Then she caught an attitude for no reason and the conversation went like this: "I'm sorry but we don't DO that. That must be a branded thing. We do Idalia's technique. We blow the hair out and cut it and then the cut is there. You can go to whatever salon that is and THEY can do that for you". Maybe I am being sensitive but her complete tone of voice and disdain (as I perceived her demeanor) for me asking about a hair cutting technique that is well know with naturals just felt oddly defensive and rude. I just said never mind and hung up. Sorry for trying to support and trying out a salon with 3 stars and $$$ in my neighborhood...aka getting a salon closer to home. I don't let just anyone touch my hair. I have natural hair with every texture 3A to 4c in a (usually) beautiful mix of waves, coils & curls. Stretched it reaches BSL (bra strap level for those not versed in hair acronyms) After having my baby 6mths ago, I really neglected it.. ok it was a hot mess, dry, tangled...sigh. Let's keep it real. Anyway, I first met the ladies of Idalias during a street festival on Washington Avenue. One Sunday I woke up, went to my church Abundant Life with my family, looked in the bathroom mirror (at church) and was like "What the HELL?!" (Gods still working on me) I told my hubby for New Years, I was going to try the place I saw. For my entire life (minus a few tries in college) I've only allowed two people, my aunt and my sister to touch my hair. I didn't think I was quite ready to let strangers touch my hair. When I realized they moved, I thought, see sign from God. But it was only around the corner, the reflection I saw in their beautiful window said I better be ready. I walked in, and was welcomed by one of the owners I think...still putting who's who together. She was so gregarious, big smile, big personality. Two ladies proceeded to wash and give my hair a deep treatment. (Yes 2, don't judge me, I said it was bad) I started to relax. They were so friendly, laughing, cracking jokes, yet very professional. Ok this wasn't too bad. Then I met Jhavaunna. We discussed the different styling options, and after she assured me that I would not lose my curl pattern, I opted for a flatiron. BREATHE!!! I was so frigging nervous...who was I anyway? First I walk into a shop I don't know, with ladies I just met and now I'm letting this lady from California flat iron my hair? I was reassured when I saw every woman that left that shop looked FIERCE and had a smile on their faces. So I did it. Wait what??!! My hair was so soft, and so light, not greased down. She trimmed it, so it had movement, and it really looked good. I didn't recognize myself. I went again last week and got J (we are bff's now so I can call her that) to do an updo. That also came out nice. I love love that it's in Brooklyn, Love that its so close to my church, love that they're open on Sundays, love the great vibe, and love the gifted hands. Read the other reviews. This business quotes one price and then charges you another. Shame on them. Here's my experience: Was quoted $25 for manicure and pedicure services on a Friday. At the register, I was charged $37. I let them know that $25 was the price quoted and the women said it was for services on Sunday, Thursday, etc... (Not on Friday). I let them know that was never said. Why would they even tell me about prices for a different day? Never did I hear $37. I wrote an email to the staff yesterday and came in today after I read the other horrible reviews online. I spoke to the owner and she was not apologetic at all. Never did she say sorry for the confusion. She made excuses for her employees and accused me of misunderstanding. She argued back with me as if it didn't happen and that I was in the wrong. I brought up the other reviewers that had the same experience and again she was in complete denial. In the end, she refunded the $12 difference, but it wasn't pretty. This could have gone another way. She could have remained calm and apologized for the confusion. This is what customer service looks like. This is what it means to bring in new customers. i showed up to the salon with natural hair after hearing about the Pravana Smoothing treatment. The place is spotless and the owner, Idalias aka Darlene, greeted me right away. After a color and the Pravana Smoothing treatment, my natural 4C type hair was as smooth as silk! They turned my gray hairs into golden highlights. And let's not forget to mention the complimentary hand massage, that almost put me to sleep! Chanel, the owner is a force to be reckoned with. She did a great job at shaping my eyebrows! I have found an oasis in Brooklyn, and will be returning for a facial and a pedicure, which they offer as well. I found this salon when I bought 3 mani/pedis from Groupon. I have previously bought 2 similar deals w/other salons so I feel I can make a fair comparison (1 in Park Slope & 1 in Bensonhurst). Usually I have felt that salons are aggravated by the fact that customers came in w/a discounted price. They use assembly line service and can't wait to get you out the door. This is far from what I received from Idalias. The first time I went I was spoiled by the extra touches (hell even when she took her time to make sure all the old nail polish was off or when she took extra time to really scrub my feet). I really felt like my Groupon was a HUGE discount compared to what I got. The 2nd time I went was today. I was sad when the girl was helping someone else but that changed quickly. One of the owners helped and she was AMAZING and delightful!! How often do you walk into a place w/high expectations and have them surpassed?? Which brings me to this...! I wanted to confirm the address so I didn't miss it driving by and ALL of the reviews were negative. Have you people lost your mind? What salon were you at? I recently moved into the Crown Heights neighborhood and in my search to find a salon that does black hair, I wandered on Washington avenue and found Idalia's. When I went into the salon at 10am, the Saturday before Easter, I thought it would be a long shot to get my hair done, but Fantasia welcomed me with open arms. I was pleased that she detangled my hair during my shampoo/condition and she was always respectful of "tenderheadedness". She sat me under the hood dryer and blow dried me and then pressed my hair flat to perfection and superbly bone straight like I like. A lot of heat, but I don't put much heat on my hair so I was ok with that. I would definitely go back here frequently if I made more money, but as a press and trim cost me $105, I definitely can't afford to go Idalia's often. I recently visited this salon and am about to schedule my next visit. I must say it was truly refreshing to find a stylist that still uses the marcel irons. Darlene was great! She took the time out to walk me through my style, to make sure the cut was everything I was looking for and more. I received prompt, professional attention and a slamming hair cut that has brought me compliment, after compliment for several weeks. The service Darlene supplied me with lasted for two weeks looking just as fresh as it did when I left the salon. Darlene recognized right away what my thick, coarse hair required and it wasn't flat irons. She used the appropriate amount of heat and oil and technique just right for my hair. These people were so rude! I stopped in to ask for assistance with a new lace front wig as I am just getting into wearing them to have more variety in my look. "Why do you want to wear wigs? Why don't you want to cut your hair? Where did you purchase your wig? Why did you shave the sides of your head? " Then the desk attendant went on to say they were "too booked" to custom fit the wig for me. It was a ghost town in there, just say you don't want my business. I went to Divine Connection Hair Spa, also black owned and operated, a block away on Washington ave. and they were VERY welcoming, answered all my questions, quoted the fee and said I didn't need an appt just come any time! I booked an appointment through style seat for a wash/curl. Prior to the appointment I had to wash my hair due to getting paint in it after moving. I walked in for my appointment and told the stylist Darlene I just wanted a style and cut and she told me she wouldn't touch my hair without first washing it. I explained to her I literally had it washed 24 hours before hand. I gave in since I was already despite me just washing it but she gave me attitude and canceled my appointment right there. Will never stop here again which is a shame because the hair styles looked really nice on StyleSeat but the attitude was unnecessary and unprofessional. I should of known there was going to be attitude when I tried to change my appointment and she told me she was booked up yet there were plenty of empty slots on styleseat. I called nearly every natural hair salon in Brooklyn on a Sunday trying to get a quick trim, and after countless turn downs, I typed in 'hair salon' into Yelp and this salon came up! I called at 3:30 and she told me that if I came in a half hour, she would be able to service me! I'm not quite sure what her name was, but after a quick talk we agreed to dry Deva Cut and I'm pretty happy with it so far, though a bit shorter than I was expecting! I'm only giving it 4 stars because after I went home to wash my hair, there was a huge part of my hair that hung lower than the rest and I had to cut it myself to make it even. The process took less than 15 minutes and only cost me $35! Incredible price for a cut this intricate! I have definitely found my new salon home. My only tip to those planning to visit is to bring cash. They take cards but you cannot tip on a card. If you're natural and on a budget needing a quick trim or cut, pay a visit here. I'm not quite sure of their pricing outside of cutting, but I presume it's reasonable. read more

Some people need to be taught lessons even in their old age.....and that lesson needs to be learned from the co-owner, Chanel. I came in with an appointment for my stylist Amber. I followed Amber from a previous salon because she is phenomenal; in fact all the stylists there are very nice and do amazing work. You would have to be pretty amazing for me to make a 2 hour trek from Mount Vernon to BK and Amber is. She's the best!!!! Today however, I had an absolutely horrible experience due to Chanel pushing someone who did not have an appointment onto my stylist and never gave me the courtesy to say that there would be a wait. If I were told this, maybe I would not have had to waste my entire day waiting but the courtesy of telling me would have softened he blow. I ended up waiting 2 1/2 hrs because the customer who was allowed to skip me had a more expensive treatment. I should have known not to stay- the three times that I have been to this salon have been very uncomfortable. This last time, after I entered the salon- Chanel decided to greet me after she saw me standing with my coat on for 5 minutes ONLY AFTER, greeting her customer who came after me. This lady was also the one who Chanel pushed on to my stylist ( the client just so happened to be white). Rarely have I ever been so pissed off from being so utterly disrespected and ignored. I got bad vibes from the lady from my very first visit and will never go there go again. I don't know if she mistook my kindness for weakness but there is one thing that I can tell you- this lady is evil, delusional, and I'm embarrassed to call her a fellow black female. She preys on people who she thinks are weak. And Chanel, if you are reading this, please know that everything you said behind my back has been heard, but it's not me you should worry about because there is a God above that judges us not by what we say, but by what we do. I've wanted to leave a review for some time now but had second thoughts considering I frequent the neighborhood of the salon but, I'll get right to it! Here's the thing, I don't want to be overly detailed but I want you future clients to get my "drift" in a timely matter. I came in to tame my short cut and was immediately greeted by the owner. She always seems pleasant and maybe a little zany but it works for great engagement. I sat in the chair and received a consultation from the stylist Darlene who was a little brash in delivery. It would be my first professional haircut in over 6 years which I shared with my disinterested stylist and asked that she'd bare with my limited "hair-lingo". After being sent downstairs for a wash and dry by the very sweet shampoo girl, they literally left me downstairs for nearly an hour and a half (mind you my hair is slightly longer than Melinda Williams off soul food). The stylist didn't remember I was there until she went down to turn off the television. It was almost magical that the dryer stayed on that long lol. Instead of apologizing, her first response was "Why didn't you say anything?", despite my asking the owner if it were time to come out when she left the restroom. My stylist and I went back upstairs where she then mocked my limited "hair-lingo" as I desperately hoped she understood my request to taper the sides and layer my bangs. Before she started blowing out my hair, I'll admit I was nervous because I'm sensitive to heat. You'd know by the heavy black mark on my neck that I haven't had much luck with hair irons. Knowing this, I asked that she only used a flat iron... Lol, she told me my hair was too coarse (which I had NEVER heard in my life) and that I'd need a pressing comb (which I have NEVER used... In my life) but if I want to go out with my hair half done she would leave it. The truth of it is, my mother and aunt owned two great salons and I had been doing my own hair for years without harm or remarks and found it funny to hear her "consulting". Why get my hair done else where you ask? Because one owner (my aunt) passed on and the other (my mother) lived in another state which prompted my own recession savvy hair techniques. I let her go ahead with the hot comb and froze at the thought of being burned by the curling iron like a 12 year old girl in her mama's kitchen. While she cut and curled my hair, she asked about the products I used which were Cantu and Organix where she told me they were not good product I guess as her way of modest leeway into purchasing the products they sold? Either way, my hair was finished and looked great despite the layers I requested not being visible but, it honestly flowed nicely and felt healthy. The $85 charge almost broke my early twenty-something year old heart. All in all, if you hope to be treated aggressively and be challenged by your dresser but wish for great hair and high prices- this is the place for you. After all... beauty hurts, right? read more

The services have mostly always resulted in satisfaction, until recently. There is once again a new stylist. I made the appt., with the owner whom I've always attempted to go to-more times then not I have seen the owner, but again was rerouted to a new girl..when I inquired about her expertise in cutting to the "host/makeup artist/social butterfly/appt maker" she was insulted and felt that the question should not have been asked. Horrible story short I was completely COMPLETELY over charged, $130 for a WASH AND a demand for a tip?? I went to Idalia's faithfully for over a year. While they do garner great results, I have many issues with them. 1. It's expensive. I convinced myself that the money was worth the results, as I'm sure many of us have, but the following reasons are why I decided to move on. 2. Lack of price list. I don't know if this is still the case, but there was no price list for services. The price changed virtually EVERY SINGLE TIME I went in. Therefore, if they like you one day, the price is a little less, if the owner is in a bad mood, the price is a little more. They claimed there were discounts for certain things, but overall, it felt half-assed. Here you are, standing in this beautiful, professional salon, and you can't even look at a reference point for prices??! Yeah. You can bet your bottom dollar that if you go in after a long time, they will inflate the price as punishment for not being a regular. 3. The attitudes of the shampoo girls left much to be desired. 4. "No means no." They tried too hard to sell me the add-on services. When I say I want a wash, set and deep conditioning and I've already said no to eyelash extensions, and no to purchasing handbags, then give up already. Chanel (sp?) was a little pushy. 5. The wait WITH AN APPOINTMENT was entirely too long. I don't have all day. I went to this salon on July 13, 2013 and August 16,2013. I initially came because the other salon I planned on going to was closed (when it said it would be open) and I was in dire need of getting my hair done. On my first trip I got a full relaxer, rinse, and hair cut. On my second trip, i got a wash w/ edge up and style. Overall: I enjoyed my experiences at the salon. Darlene and staff take their time to get to know you and make you feel comfortable. She's also great at styling--especially if you want a short cut. You will leave the salon feeling great! She also gives tips on how to manage your hair and how to get it to be healthy. I got several compliments on my hair, especially on the rinse (which Chanel helped with). Considerations: It's definitely not inexpensive, which is why I can only go for major services. Additionally, be sure to go as early in the day as possible. They get a lot of clients and depending on what you plan on getting, you might be there for a while. Also, Darlene is the main stylist for short cuts; if there is a long queue, that may add to your wait time. She's been in the business since 1996 and definitely knows her stuff. I visited Idalia's after purchasing a Groupon for a regular manicure/pedicure. I walked in and was greeted warmly by Chanel (sp?), the owner, who seems to be delightful through and through. My mani/pedi experience was great!!! Honestly, the time and care taken, as well as the products used were awesome!!! It was more like a spa manicure and spa pedicure than a regular mani/pedi. I clearly don't know personally what every other reviewer's experience was, but I read the yelp reviews before going to Idalia's and was skeptical, especially based on the fact that I was using a Groupon. I was a little bit leery getting this groupon after reading some of the reviews. However, I had a fabulous experience. Thank you, Chantal!!! I do not understand why some people would give bad reviews when it is uncalled for. Even though I was half an hour early, Chantal, the owner, greeted me warmly and started preparing the water for me and asked what temperature I like. The groupon did not say that it was a spa mani-pedi, but that is what I got. She did not care that I was using a groupon and took her time, more specifically, she took 3 hours and did a thorough job. I had a lot of calluses so she used callus remover and had to scrub a lot without hurting me. Afterwards, she gave me a good massage so that the scrub made a thick lather. After rinsing off the scrub, she gave me another good massage with lotion. She used a base coat, 2 nail color coats, and a top coat. All this took was 1 1/2 hr. This same procedure was used for my hands. All the while, we chit chatted and got to know each other. Chantal kept me laughing, so that I was thoroughly entertained and couldn't believe that it had been 3 hours. so i went there yesterday for the first time and i just want to say wow wow wow !!! ... i literally left glowing from ear to ear .... initially i went in only for a nail appointment and left with a cut, perm and deep conditioning too ...I loved the ladies there especially Chanel and my hairstylist (i cant remember her name at the moment) ...the manager didn't say much but was still respectable (just extremely quiet and introverted must admit the price was way more than i was planning but my hair was pretty much dead from coloring and going to other cheap salons that ruined my hair. so by that point i was desperate... my hair LITERALLY is unrecognizable it looks so great, my hairstylist was AMAZING and Chanel left my nails looking healthy and gleaming!!!! if you go def meet Chanel her style, presence, and personality is so great! The owner/ manager seems very nice; however, I don't see the point of making an appointment here if its not honored. Maybe it was the day or I can't really say what it is... The website doesn't speak much about their nail services and I wish it listed times. Overall, my manicure and pedicure was so-so. They do not use new nail files and scrubbers on you so beware. My manicurist was over an hr late and I was trying hard to like this place but after telling her several times to fix my nails of spots missed or the polish not even on your nail, I gave up. I recently had a weave install done here after finding about the shop through a beauty blog. 2 weeks prior I stopped by and had a consultation done with the owner, Darlene. She was very helpful and let me know that I needed to take out my braids immediately and do a deep treatment before getting the weave (My Senegelese twists were a little over due to be removed). We made an appointment for 3 weeks later. Over that weekend I took them out and applied the Aphogee conditioner as Darlene recommended and wore my natural hair in 2 strand twists to give it a break. My appointment was last Friday and went seamlessly. The shampoo girl was very friendly and did a good job of washing and conditioning my 3c/mostly 4a hair. My stylist was Vonna who quickly blow dried, sectioned, and braided my hair. You can tell she has great experience with both natural hair and weaves which for me is a rare find. She got my "leave out" super straight without too many passes of the flat iron. The install looked amazing when she was done! I made sure to make a follow up appointment with her. Overall my experience was great! The only con is like several of the other reviewers mentioned, the prices are not cheap. I ended up getting a trim (which was MUCH needed) and deep conditioner (also MUCH needed) which tacked on additional costs to the total. I spent a little more than I anticipated, but I needed these services as I have not been giving my hair the TLC it needed. I went to Idalias two weeks ago for a short cut. This had been my first time to the Salon since it moved from its original location on Washington Ave. Jhavaunna cut my hair and I LOVE it. She was extremely warm and although I was a bit embarrassed by the original condition of my hair, she made me feel very comfortable transforming my hair into this GORGEOUS short pixie style. I got a cut, color, and style for a very reasonable price. Note: The place is extremely clean and cute :) The owner is really funny, she makes funny comments but If you don't have tough skin, it may throw you off. Both Jhavuanna and the owner greeted me and made me feel very welcomed, I am NO longer going to my old stylist/salon. I have officially found a stylist that's perfect for me and I will definitely recommend IDALIAS to anyone that wants a BEAUTIFUL cut! :) read more

Let me tell you... Darlene's hands are blessed by God himself. I went in this past friday, I called as soon as they opened and they were able to take me the same day. Very professional, warm hearted atmosphere, the staff is full of beautiful talented and friendly women. I don't see myself ever going to another salon again. Well, Lets start off by saying I went in on a sunday and was just inquiring about prices about a hair cut, the prices i was told were from 40-50$.. Then I agreed to do it. Then after tlking with the owner who was "pretty friendly " introduced me to my stylist who asked me what i wanted and then all of the sudden he suggested I get a perm "which I didn't need and a color. Mind you I just wanted a cutt. So overall, I like the regular blk color and I did like my cutt... simple but, overall even which i wanted my hair to be. Then I got my CHECK!!! 35-cutt 35-perm and the craziest part was 80-PERM!!!!!!!! what???? totaling 150!!!!!!! plus a 10 tip.... I used my card so I was also hit with a 7.50 tax....Grand total of 167.50.... Not going to a salon til my bday which is in a mth time.. The jury is still out on weather I should go back or NOT!!!!!!! I have read the reviews on this website and can't say I'm surprised. People want the impossible and they want it yesterday. If you walk into a salon and expect it to change your reality, you're setting yourself up for failure. If you walked in with broken, damaged hair that is a situation you created. Your stylist is there to help bring health back to your hair, so when you walk out with your spirits lifted, that is a successful experience. Idalia's ALWAYS sends me home with a smile on my face. I have never had a bad experience in this salon, and I have been a client since 1995 when they were located on Flatbush Avenue. It's simple ladies; if you'd spend $300 dollars on a pair of shoes why wouldn't you spend a fraction of that on your hair? I don't care what you are wearing and who designed it, if your hair looks crazy then YOU look crazy. Someone called this salon the former salon of Ursula Stephens, stylist to the stars. While it is true that she was a stylist there, Idalia's is much more than a launch pad for someone that caters to celebrities. It's where you go when you want hair care that complements as well as brings out your best. I live over 90 minutes from Idalia's now and that doesn't stop me from going. I've been to Idalia's regularly for the past eight years. They use great products and Darlene (owner) cares about the health of her clients' hair, not just making it look good. Darlene is also a great stylist. She does great short cuts as well as longer styles. read more

I have to admit I was very nervous going to Idalias due to all of the negative reviews i found here and other places online. However, I was determined to try it out and get a haircut and so I made an appointment, bundled up, and headed their way. I entered the salon and wasn't really impressed--it felt like a cold, grey warehouse. I was greeted by a woman who gave me the 15 minute consultation--she immediately wanted to perform addition services beside the cut I wanted. I politely declined and was led downstairs to have my hair washed. After that I was put under a dryer for 20 minutes and then directed to go upstairs for my cut. The girl who cut my hair (Monica) was excellent, and if I was writing this review on her alone I'd give her 5 stars. She gave me a cute cut and we chatted throughout. I had been expecting to pay around $50 for the cut, but since I also had a wash and set it came to $75. Not my original plan but not a huge jump. it was nice to have a break from my normal salon but I'm not sure if I'll be back. read more

EXPENSIVE but worth every penny! I have natural curly hair and the untangled it and got it bone straight! Darlene is amazing! AND I love that you don't have to wait! They focus just on you and none of that switching and waiting in a chair as they do someone else's hair. Amazing work, that's why I only go there. read more
