Mary mentioned that she used to own a salon, and after this experience, I understand why she no longer does. The color is completely off, the highlights are uneven, and the overall result is just terrible. I have thin hair, and the haircut with multiple layers made everything worse-- and throughout the process I was literally being hit in the face with my own wet hair as she cut. It felt chaotic and unprofessional. The result was such a disaster that I had to go to another salon and pay a significant amount to fix it. The hairstylist there was shocked and kept repeating that some people simply should not be doing hair. I spent an entire week tying my hair up just to hide how bad it looked. To make matters worse, the payment experience was incredibly uncomfortable. I paid her immediately via Zelle and even tipped her in cash. Because the transfer wasn't instant (we have different banks), she became upset and made me stay while I called my bank to prove that I had paid. It was humiliating and unnecessary. Afterward, I sent her photos to show how disastrous the result was, and her only response was to tell me to book another appointment. There is no way I would trust her to fix this. I asked for a refund, which I now realize I likely won't receive after seeing other similar reviews. This was an extremely disappointing and stressful experience. I did not get a reply back. I believe I called two or three times and called other numbers that I found on her Instagram and Google. No one answered the phone. After I booked the appointment I noticed that it said any available staff, which was odd because the last time I booked the appointment it actually said Fatima and I believe it was a different site when I first booked. Anyway, I go to the salon and they say Fatima isn't there but someone else is going to do your hair. I'm like, okay, well, since you're doing my hair, this is how I want it. The girl isn't understanding, so she calls Fatima and puts her on the phone; so her and I are speaking. We are going back and forth about how I want my hair to look, and she is telling me the price. First, the special that I booked was $120, 6 stitch into a bun. I believe she was saying that because I wanted it straight down, she was adding $20 extra, which did not make sense. Then I was saying no, I don't want it going all the way down to my nape, I want 6 to 8 boxbraids in the back with the 6 stitch on top going down. She then proceeded to say it was $160. I'm like, okay. She thought I wanted something like fulani, but that wasn't what I was saying. The staff that was there ready to braid my hair didn't want to do my hair anymore because I originally wanted Fatima to do my hair and because of the back and fourth she didn't want to do it and I didn't like it. I said I understood that, but now i have to change my plans and figure it out. While still on the phone with Fatima, I asked when will she be available. She says you have to check the site. I'm like. wow, okay. She sent me the deposit back, and I left. I check the site once again, and it doesn't provide her name or anyone else's name; it says (Staff, worker or something, no one name. I SAY ALL this to say. The site needs to be changed. The phone numbers they need to be updated, and the customer service needs to be better. I advised that I had been planning to make this appointment for 6 weeks and that fell on deaf ears. When I questioned when she'd be opening her books for new clients, I was told there wasn't a date (that it would likely not be 'forever'). I say all this to say, as a black-owned hair/nail studio that not only I patronized but have had others close to me patronize/become repeat customers (in the heart of Fort Greene where gentrification has taken over), it's important to communicate accurately so that people aren't taken by surprise like this. In my gut, I felt like this appointment would never happen anyway because the artist only provides a phone number on her IG page and doesn't answer direct messages regarding her services. Always a red flag, in hindsight. My recommendation: if you're looking for convenience, don't bother trying to book for Phelisia's book. The attached photo is from her Instagram story on 6/26 that still doesn't advise that she's not taking new clients but when you call and ask - they explain that bookings are for existing clients only. I sincerely feel for those who waited like I did only to be denied an appointment. A friend of mine actually decided not to pursue these services as well because of this. Just BAD BUSINESS! I'm not sure about the work of the other artist (Veronica) but one might have better luck getting in with her. Anything else is a waste of precious time to be frank.

I've had decent experiences with them in general. My hair texture is easy to manage (3b-c). It's natural and while I have a lot, it doesn't require a lot to get straight. So a wash and set is all I need. The reason for this negative review is that I recently started taking my 6 year old daughter for blowouts. She has been about 3 times. Her hair texture is considerably more course than mine (4a). It is (or should I say 'was') thick and beautiful. Her Afro-puffs were perfect, enviable, huge round puffs of cotton. Not any more. During the last visit, both my daughter and I came for blowouts. The salon was nearly empty so we had different stylists. The stylist who tended to my daughter was feeling her hair and simultaneously asking "are you gonna be a good girl today?" Not sure what she was talking about I piped in, "she is always a good girl." The stylist said, "I just meant while I blow it, it gets hot." I said, "Again, she always is a good girl, she really enjoys getting her hair straightened so she is a good sport about the process." They went to the shampoo bowl. I was already past that point and getting rollers in my hair and about to go under the dryer. So I didn't observe my daughter's shampoo process. I regret that now. My daughter's hair turned out great. Straighter than ever. Definitely more straight than when I do it at home. I drummed it up to the professionals being professional. I didn't wash her hair for 2 weeks (judge me, it's a thing :)) and my daughter's hair never reverted. 6 year old girl, doing 6 year old play, sweat and all and there was barely any curly edges. Peculiar? Yes... but I didn't think too much about it. It wasn't until I washed her hair that I realized that something was really wrong. 3 shampoos. And her hair would not curl. Stringy, straight hairs all over her head. 6 years of loving up on each of her curls, I know exactly what her hair is like, and...like that... it was changed! I did a Deep conditioning treatment. And her hair still wouldn't curl the way it previously did. Soft, puffy, fluffy, hair gone. And her hair had this awful chemical smell to it. 3 shampoos and a deep conditioning treatment and this weird smell clung to her hair. I was convinced at that point that the salon did something irreversible to her hair. I went to the salon and explained my concerns to the same ladies in the shop I have always seen and talked to every time I have visited, but now they didn't understand my English. So they called a woman who supposedly owned the salon and spoke better English, who expectedly denied any wrongdoing. It's heartbreaking really. So beware. This business is up to funny business. I definitely will never return. I'll be using all the natural hair care tips I've gained over the years to try and repair the damage done to my daughter's continually breaking hair. Box braids were my signature and to for to a place that provided the hair was a plus! Old habits die hard so when I wanted to braid my hair for a long trip I went back to what I know. They are still at a decent price point that will get you hair, braids that last, don't fall out, and are super sweet.
