The girl who was at the checkout wasn't doing anything, and seemed like she was just being lazy. She has short brown hair, and is a short girl. We made eye contact many times. Personally, sushi will always be my favorite food!! On my first date here, I wasn't able to walk in because I was so unaware of the shop being opened. The chefs are on point and produce amazing food. I would normally give a 5 star, but one waitress needs to get out of the business. She walks around and acts like you as a customer are a inconvenience. I've been here multiple times and the same waitress that behaves completely inappropriately by drinking Red Bulls in the back table and joking and laughing, while completely ignoring customers during the busiest time. Pisses off customers and throws work on the hardest working waitresses. Yes, I watch. The reason for this post is due to the most recent experience, where she didn't turn in our sushi order because she said she thought we were stilling waiting. First off, it was freaking 45 mins after we thought the order was placed and so I would think as a waitress WOULD CHECK WITH THE FREAKING CUSTOMER if they thought they were waiting to add to the order. Here we thought it was turned in cause there was definitely no interaction and wasn't informed until we approached her. After it was expedited she arrives throwing a entitled teenage attitude and says "Do you want these or not?" While another waitress is trying to mitigate the problem. The attitude is unreal and honestly I don't know if I will be back until she is gone. I shouldn't pay to get teenage attitude, especially when it's their screw up. read more

Sushi was pretty good. The chef even made a spicy chefs choice roll upon request and the hubby loved it. The sushi chefs know what they are doing. Lived here for about a year and have been wanting to try this restaurant for awhile now. Finally got to try it today. You walk in, they say sit where you want. So far, so good. The room is very open and roomy inside. The hostess/waitresses are very friendly. The area where they make the sushi is visible and you can sit nearby if you want to watch them make the sushi. There are tv's and plenty of tables to sit at. For a Thursday night, it was pretty busy. Hot tea is served for $1.00. Plenty of sushi selections. The vegetable sushi is mind blowingly amazing! ...I know, maybe boring for some, ery open and roomy inside if you are a daredevil and eat fish (I'm just not a fish eater). I ordered the Ichiban Ramen. It was soooo good on a chilly night. The broth was packed with flavor. The egg was a nice touch...kinda like the cherry on an ice cream sundae. I requested no pork which they delivered. Kids ordered the Teppan chicken (lunch portion) ---kids can order it at dinner, guess it's like the kids menu? T Overall, I am extremely satisfied and definetly will be back. In fact, it may be my new go to spot in Tehachapi. The prics are not extremely high. I thought it was quite reasonable. read more

We had never been to ichiban before, but read the reviews and thought we would try it. It's open seating when you go in and the chefs are putting sushi and rolls together right in front of you. The person who seated us was very patient and kind and explained how everything worked in the restaurant when he found out we were newbies. Overall, we loved it! The food was fresh and came up quick and the teppanyaki and fried rice were very flavorful. The service was excellent and we were constantly checked on to see if we needed anything else. 5 STARS FOR THE SUSHI. ;-) 3 STARS FOR THE BENTO BOX DINNER. ;-( I enjoy sushi and after reading the other reviews ordered the Jessica roll to see what the fuss was about. The Jessica roll was fantastic. Avocado, salmon, and crunchy shrimp presented beautifully and tasted great, beautifully presented and fresh. The downside was the dinner. Fairly tasteless on way-oversized, really big plates. The HUGE plates are rather silly and took up a lot of the table space. The size of the plate did not make up for a lackluster presentation and a rather dull meal. The chicken looked like it could have been microwaved with a dull and sad sauce thrown on top, and the tempura was very oily and lacked taste. I commented to the waitress about the sushi vs. the dinner. She agreed that the sushi is outstanding while the dinners were okay (this is coming from my waitress). So for this place stick with the sushi as this is prepared by a trained sushi chef and order the Jessica roll. I wish I would have just had an all sushi and sashimi dinner. Stay away from the chicken bento dinner or try something else. Maybe the chef for these items is allergic to taste. read more

There are only two other options in Tehachapi for sushi & to be honest I'm not in love with any of them. Ichiban wins 3 stars from me because of their "spicy baked lobster" dish & their aggressively average California rolls. The "lobster dish is super rich and absolutely delicious, for when you're feeling like eating a bunch of calories. A little on the small side though..... I have tried several other rolls and they are definitely edible. I have also tried their "lunch combo" a + b thing with teriyaki chicken and it was a poor sized serving on a GIANT PLATE. Their teriyaki chicken is super disgusting & the sauce tased like straight molasses. Moral of story, stick to the rolls & tempura and you will have about as enjoyable meal as you possibly can in Tehachapi. Probably avoid their miso soup too, kind of tastes like dirty dish water. :/ read more

Ichiban was the first restaurant my husband and I visited after moving here the day we got married. Their sushi was our wedding night meal, and boy was it delicious! We have been here several times since and have never been disappointed! The staff have been kind and patient each time, and my husband and I love the sushi! My boyfriend took me here a couple months ago and I really enjoyed it, food was delicious and more than we can eat. We decided to go back yesterday, we got the same things as last time. We waited 40minutes for our food to come, but when we got home my entire order wasn't there. So my boyfriend called and asked if he could go get it, they said we will make it when you get here. I had already been eating my side oder and decided to wait to eat my entree until later. My entree comes with rice and veggies and two sides. I open my box, I have a handful of chicken, a single piece of broccoli, and two thin slices of a carrot. My boyfriends salad was a handful of iceberg lettuce that was just pulled off the head of the lettuce. They did give me a grip of rice to match with my few pieces of teriyaki chicken. A great example of a restaurant buried in a shopping mall, but the food is fantastic and surprisingly good. We had an eclectic assortment of sushi, miso, tempura etc. the waitstaff was spot on. Ichiban is one of those restaurants that you grow fond of like a fisherman and his favourite wharf. I've been coming to this sushi joint for over a year, and it is by far the most legit sushi you can get in Tehachapi. On an aside, why are there 4 sushi places in this village? Midori ain't got nothin on this place. The prices are affordable, the fish is fresh, and the staff is friendly. My go-to order are the simple rolls spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon. I don't like rolls with sauces because now you're just trying to hard to like sushi. Order the classics, and you will be rewarded with immortality. read more

This has rapidly become our favorite sushi spot. We have not experienced an issues with food quality or service. Don't love something about a particular roll? Let them know. Unlike other places I've been who act like you're destroying a secret Japanese family recipe, they just handle it. Prices are comparable to other sushi joints. The hot menu could really use some work - minus the fried rice which is stellar. Now with that said, the only negative is the restaurant itself. Put some money into the establishment. Restroom doors that don't lock or even close without help, a restroom in need of all basic repairs is not really acceptable. The booths aren't too bad, but don't look much further. All the chairs are old and broken down, the floors are rough. Just put some of my relatively large checks (which are nothing compared to tables being plied with alcohol) back into your restaurant. However, none of that stops us from being frequent customers. We come for the amazing rolls not the decor. read more

Went here on a Sunday because Kasagiri was closed. Very meh. Service was good but it took a while for the server to take my order (sushi chef called her over...). I got the Maui and Sunset rolls which were just okay. The Maui was the better of the two, but it was a weird combination to have cold crab mix (think Cali roll stuffing) with warm seared fish on the outside. The light citrus soy with sweet, thin sliced onion on top was really good though. However, the sunset was not good. While the fish was good, the oddly radioactive orange spicy glaze destroyed the taste. Next time I'll just eat somewhere else and go on a night when Kasagiri is open, or head to Lancaster and eat at Big Tuna. :) read more
